(The Basilika) Raeyn is a man of unpopular opinions

The Diamond of Kalea is located on Kalea's extreme west coast and called as such because its completely made of a crystalline substance called Skyglass. Home of the Alvina of the Stars, cultural mecca of knowledge seekers, and rife with Ethaefal, this remote city shimmers with its own unique light.

A thousand voices, each with something to say

Coming to class only to find that the plan has changed was certainly not a great start to the morning. Especially seeing as no prior warning nor explanation was given to the handful of mages who had congregated at the foot of the Twilight Tower, each as dumbfounded as the other. Among those very students was Raeyn. With the massive door slammed shut and chains locked, and Orath nowhere in sight he had little choice but to be on his way home, disappointed and furious. he wasn't paying tuition fees to stand around and waste his time when the secrets of the universe were at his very fingertips. A mental note was made in his mind to have it out with the Etheafal behind closed doors. This was unacceptable.

In spite of the odd feeling in the pit of his stomach as of late, Raeyn wasn't one to slack on his studies. he was a man of ambition. A solitary scholar who found the greatest of companionship between the pages of a thick tome and inside the alchemy lags at the Twilight Tower. Even his very own home wasn't home enough compared to the mystical places he had the privilege of calling classrooms. Alone with his craft he was at his happiest, most content, addicted. Ripped from it he was in withdrawal.

But as he turned on his heal to stride to the library, his last place of refuge from the mundanity of Lhavit life, a curious crowd peaked his interest. Of course there was always a crowd at the Basilika. The strange, skyglass construction, perched at the back of the library seemed to boast larger numbers of visitors each season but never had he ever seen it so full that crowds were gathering outside.

Surreal, like the spectators of a sports ground they were. Crowds of patrons clustered in groups, delighting in more or less pleasant conversation but it seemed words were on everybody's lips. Each of them had something to say. Some people wore robes or the latest fashions of Lhavitian summer whilst others were common folk draped in cheap jewellery in a desperate bid to look on trend. Either way the randomness of garb made the nature of this commotion utmost difficult to suss out.

Curious Raeyn pushed his way though the crowds with more than one "Excuse me" deeper into the gut of the Basilika where all this commotion originated from. There crowds seemed to thin out. Though the murmurs of chatter was still a cacophony, most spoke in hushed voices and looked towards the centre just as curiously as Raeyn did where the main, most distinguished voices boomed with opinion.

It was like duel of speech. Once he reached the inner most circle, Raeyn saw a handful of women and gentlemen yelling at each other in passionate discussion. It was this that most came for. A debate like any other more heated and eloquent than Raeyn had ever come to see in his 27 years on the mortal plane. Perhaps there was some celebrity to the figures, at least among the mages. One of them, an elderly grey wizard clad in navy robes, Raeyn recognised from lectures though his name the Inarta had never quite managed to commit to memory.

had this debate anything to do with why the Twilight Towed stood empty and closed in spite of scheduled seminars? Had something more sinister gone on in the city that he had yet to find out about? Those questions plagues Raeyn like locusts and so the young mage decided to stay and listen in a little. He had little interest in joining the debate until of course the statement had reached his ears.

"There is simply no way to keep our students safe if the very thing we teach them is more dangerous than they could ever know. Of course we can give them warnings and lessons from history but young people will never listen to their elders when the manipulation of djed is at their fingertips." A plump, potato-like woman in skirts reminiscent far more of Alvadas fashion than the more flowing and elegant fashions of Lhavit, was speaking with such emotion that one would immediately think she was speaking of her own children. Gesticulating overly with her hands, every word out of her mouth was drenched with motherlyness - the kind that disgusted Raeyn for whom magic was a cold hard fact. "Young people live to push boundaries for they have yet to be taught the hardships of life. The true hardships. And that is why if we ever consider keeping our gates open to the public and our resources available to the students, we should at least raise the age of acceptance."

"Marilla is right." nodded an impressively short man beside her. "Some of us have been enticed onto this path far younger than we could comprehend it's risks. You can see it in the scars on the hands of reimancers."

"With any knowledge come great risks! But the greatest risks lay in not knowing!" somebody from the crowd yelled so loud that in spite of them standing a good 2-3 hundred meters away, Raeyn felt like their voice was in his very ears.

A thousand voices, each with something to say

Postby Raeyn on June 27th, 2018, 3:21 pm

Raeyn didn't quite like the tone of this debate. So many speakers seemed far too passionate for a man who liked to keep anything to do with magic sanitised and straightforward. As an alchemist he was aware of the risks involved with the magic or even those involved with the usage of items created by it but that was about as far as his emotional understanding of alchemical drawbacks ended. he was far more concerned with what a life the magical art can give him rather than what life it can take away.

Saying that Raeyn did have a very specific set of values when it came to topics concerning scholarly pursuits. Knowledge was as sacred to him as the reverence of Lhavit's gods. To pursue knowledge was to relinquish one's own life for a greater cause and the abandonment of such cause was cowardice. And that was precisely what he thought of the woman speaker and her short friend beside her - they were cowards ready to impose their cowardice on a whole new generations. Not a moment of Raeyn's thought was spent on the pity of them. Not a string of his heart was pulled by their very passion. He saw them as nothing but mages unworthy of their respective arts, no matter what mastery of such they might have achieved.

"Dangerous knowledge should be kept under lock and key as to not endanger the lives of everyday people who have no wish to waste their time with such things." another man spoke.

"Yes! Under lock and key!" someone else yelled in affirmation.

The Twilight Tower professor in navy was the one to raise his voice in turn and Raeyn, in turn, watched. There was a certain authority in his tiered voice. Years of experience behind his eyes. "Keeping our respective magics under lock and key will accomplish nothing but force our kind into obscurity and lead to the destruction of thousands of lives of work. Is that what you're proposing?"

"If that's what's necessary to keep our city safe..." replied another voice from the crowd.

The professor shook his head in disappointment. He couldn't' quite believe he was hearing such nonsense from the mages in his very own city. After all the liberal tuition of magic was what made Lhavit so very special in his eyes and now it seems some of it's very children were trying to take that special quality away. "I disagree with you most solemnly."

"Let us not forget of the Valterian..."

In a split second the whole crowd fell silent. Even the red faced and frazzled speakers shut their mouths for a moment as nothing more than a handful of stray whispers echoed though the Basilika. The catastrophe that threatened to destroy the land of Mizahar had not been forgotten even after centuries.

Though the mists of shocked gasps Raeyn heard his own voice speak. "But that was then and this is now..."

He wasn't quite sure what came over him. As a man who so often voided social situations this would normally have been the last thing he'd do but it seemed the verbal aggression of the situation reeled him in. He was opinionated. He knew it, Mara knew it and now the whole of Lhavit was about to know it too.

A thousand voices, each with something to say

Postby Raeyn on June 27th, 2018, 3:28 pm

Raeyn felt a thousand stares cover him like a sheet of ice. Some disgusted and disturbed whilst others hopeful, passionate and agreeing. It was an odd crowd. No way to feel out the direction with which the opinions moved as so many different ones intersected in a great big muddle of voices. As many different opinions as people were there. Some fearful, for distrusting, some prejudiced. But for everyone who detested mages there was a mage who loved what they did. And for every mage who chose to utilise their very special gift for the welfare and wellbeing of the city, there as one who, much like Raeyn, learned and studied for reasons of greed and callousness.

"So what you mean to say, dear boy," the Alvadas woman said with a shaky tone. "is that history never repeats itself?"

'Not at all." replied Raeyn calmly, not raising his voice for a second for he saw no need to. He cared little for her opinion of him or anyone else's for that measure.

"Then surely you must agree that the instruction of the magical arts should be far more restricted than it is."

"It's restricted enough. In most cities throughout Mizahar, for the open practice of the magical arts, one risks their life." yelled another woman standing only metres away from Raeyn. Quite a beauty with the same hunger in her eyes that Raeyn had. The alchemist nodded to her with a smile of affirmation, eager to relinquish his position as the speaker in a crowd of silence, especially since the Alvadas woman he deemed to be far from an intellectual equal.

Once against the crowd erupted in passionate debate. Voices shouted over one another. Opinions were flung like knives into the hearts and minds of their opponents. Bias became shields for patrons to defend their belief systems. In the cacophony and the electricity of the air surrounding the Basilika, a group of students pulled Raeyn aside to join their discussion. Each one of their faces was more or less familiar - mostly less.

A thousand voices, each with something to say

"What started all this?" Raeyn asked, a little baffled but very much willing to be filled in on all the little details of the part of the morning at the Basilika which he missed.

A lanky fellow replied with the kind of tone in his voice and look in his eyes to suggest that he was well and truly over it. He looked to be about Raeyn's age. Just as hungry for knowledge and power as anyone and just as convinced of one's own potential. "All lessons were cancelled. No one really knows why but I overheard some guys from the Dusk Tower talk about dangerous pockets of wild djed in the city. How much truth is there, I wouldn't know. But the next thing we know that woman and her hand puppet over there" he pointed to the Alvadas woman who once again was preaching some nonsense at the students, professors and visitors alike. "She starts yelling. Thinks suddenly magic is too dangerous. I mean honestly... You're in Lhavit, stupid crone. Who does she think she is telling us what to do?"

"And what do you do?" Raeyn asked, taking in all the information.

"I'm Atharis. I'm a 2nd level hypnotism student at the Twilight Tower."

Politely, the Inarta alchemist yielded his own name before returning to the topic at hand. It took him a moment to really take it all in. Perhaps the Basilika was a place for all opinions to be heard but it seemed there were some universal truths he simply took for granted. It wasn't often he engaged in debates and disagreements with opposing view for seldom did he take the time to listen to them. Regardless to say Raeyn's opinion on the matter was made before the emotional speeches reached his ears.

"Last time I checked," he said with just a tinge of anger in his voice. "what risks I am willing and not willing to take was completely down to me. Oh have I woken up in some parallel dimension where free will is no longer a thing?"

Around him the students all nodded in agreement. It was interesting to see a group of people who hardly noticed each other's presence beforehand all bind together beneath the banner of a mutually deeply held opinion. Albeit perhaps they jumped the gun a little. After all this was just a debate but it seemed the students acted a little like their very personal liberties were hanging by a thread.

"It's a low blow of them to use an event of the past against us. None of us had anything to do with the matter. None of us were even born." grumbled another girl who had introduced herself as Marina.

"We can't hide from the past, only build on it." replies Atheris in turn only to be cut of by Raeyn's flippant voice.

"Who cares about the past? It's in the past for a reason. I'm tiered of all this nonsense. Comparing us to the Valterian is stupid." he crossed his hands at his chest and his brow furrowed. "I can hardly believe anyone in their right mind would even make such a comparison"

Other than greed there was really little reason for Raeyn to hold his fiercely liberal beliefs. He provided no arguments nor explanations of his position. In his mind everything was really quite self explanatory. But it was the confidence with which he spoke rather than well reasoned responses that were far more likely to cause others to agree with him. A leader, he was hardly, perhaps a tyrant.

The bickering went on for many hours. A time during which Raeyn had met fare more people than he was every expecting to, or willing to meet. As they came and went, some having introduced themselves, others hardly, so many opinions were exchanged. Some even though him closed minded or an asshole - which he was. Every time somebody would attempt to challenge him over any intricate detail of the conversation Raeyn simply doubled down on his position which was simple and lacked details really;

Protecting people from danger by means of legislation or any other, was an assault on their civil liberty. If magic truly is a path of self destruction than it is up to the mages to decide for themselves. No one else should be entitled to that decision.
