An Evenin' at the Library

Postby Paaie on June 4th, 2018, 2:09 pm

6 Summer 518
18-and-a-half Bells, shortly after Dusk Rest

" This is a library, not a pamper house," a seeker scowled. He was a tall middle-aged man of slender build with a crooked hook nose, offset by captivating blue eyes and dark wavy hair, wearing a white tunic and sandals, and who was clearly losing patience with Paaie. To be fair the kelvic had spent a better part of a bell creating a hushed fuss, stretched out across a table thoroughly enjoying the attention she was receiving from some of the Towers' mage student as they stroked her thick black-spotted fur. The students, startled by the seeker's outburst hastily left the bold kelvic to return to their studies though.

The feline yowled disappointingly and stretched her long limbs out as the seeker sighed with relief. Paaie shot the seeker a perturbed look before prancing off the table to meander into the shelves. "Please no nudity." The seeker begged. Paaie promptly ignored him for within a few chimes the kelvic was wrapped in light and where there had stood a serval cat was now a naked young woman with dusky skin and a frizzy mane of dark tight curls. "Leth give us patience..." Muttered the seeker as he made his way to an office, hoping to retrieve a robe to lend the young kelvic. He just knew there would be complaints, sooner or later.

The kelvic was already padding up and down the narrow aisles made by the shelves in her bare feet, perusing the spines of the books settled in neat and tidy rows. It was a maze! A splendid maze Paaie could happily get lost in. Whenever her gaze caught on a book that was particularly well-read she would reach out and touch its spine with a brush of her fingertips, where she would stand in a daze for a few chimes as memories, not her own, flickered behind her dark eyes. Though the kelvic looked like she was daydreaming, those with observation skills might notice the lykata marking glowing softly on the back of her left hand.

As she immersed herself deeply into the djed lingering on the books, the kelvic's vision was filled with images drifting by in a haze. Smells and noises bustled in her mind as she caught faded glimpses of those who had come to read this book. In one glimpse Paaie saw the young, handsome face of a Shinya acolyte, dedicated and passionate, It made her smile. Quickly he was gone from the vision, though. Flickering past her gaze she saw different hands turn the pages and felt pangs of confusion, hunger, thirst, boredom, excitement fluttering through her, more and more rapidly. Slightly overwhelmed, the kelvic lifted her hand from the book, breathing as heavily as if she had just sprinted a stretch.

The library was full of wondrous artifacts and books but the building itself was a beauty to look at. Up above the kelvic and all the patrons rose magnificent skyglass pillars and arches. The ceiling was so high that the warmth of the candlelights did not reach it, though the skyglass seemed to glitter with a light all of its own. Large, shapely windows let Leth's silvery light filter in, melting into the orange glow of the firelight to create a magical hue.
The skyglass reflected light softly, so that the whole building seemed to be thrumming with inspiration. It was a work of art in of itself. Paaie liked it in the library, though she was mischievous with the seekers, she liked the rich history that hummed in the atmosphere. The feline caught herself admiring the library for a few chimes and shook her head to rustle herself.
I'm here to look for Eyris...
                Paaie had to remind herself.

An evenin' at the Library

It wasn't unheard of for Raeyn to venture to the Tenten peak for among books was his true home. It was where he felt at his happiest, surrounded by the knowledge he hungered for. And perhaps it was an impossibility for one man to read every tome hidden in the Bharani Library, but he seemed determined to spend the rest of his life trying.

Every aspect of this temple to knowledge seemed conducive to the art of learning. From the skyglass arches to the darkest, dustiest nooks and crannies where hidden treasures lay, the library shaped every stage of his life till now and it never ceased to inspire him.

For an alchemist such as himself the scarcity of djed wire was always a burden. It was expensive, vendors were few and far between and the ability to perfect his craft in the safety of the Twilight Tower under Orath's supervision was frustrating for Raeyn was a man of ambition. His purpose was that of self betterment and thus he set aside the day to seek out and uncover any information he could find on magical glyphing.

Finding the books was quite the feat, he was soon to find. Most of his morning was spent roaming the vast network of bookshelves and indeed he did find a tome or two that contained the knowledge he yearned for, but at a level far too high to be comprehensible by an amateur such as himself. Disappointment after disappointment carried him though till the afternoon when one of the seekers finally pointed him towards a book much more befitting his lack of understanding of the discipline.

"An introduction to magical scrolls"

Raeyn seated himself at the nearest desk and dove nose deep into the heavy, leather bound book. "..can be drawn in any way, be it with ink, blood..." he read in a whisper so low that one would have to stand very close to him. Sometimes no sound would escape as his lips simply traced the text. This helped him focus on the words. It helped him to absorb the knowledge as he learned about the different methods of drawing runes and what kinds of materials they could be drawn on; which he soon learned to be pretty much all materials possible and impossible. This boded well for him and his love of alchemy.

But how did these glyphs work? Scanning the next few pages he soon learned the answer. "...the Djed contained in the mystical shapes..." he read on as bells passed. The further into the book he delved the more the library started disappearing around him. The noises of the seekers and patrons, going about their business, seemed inaudible to his ears. He was so very much curious as he read about the purposes of runes ranging from stabilising wild magic to simple tasks as magic storage. And with every fact and theory he read about he instinctively linked it to Alchemy in his mind, trying to figure out how that could aid his practice.

He thought of how combining and splitting the effects of magic could be used on font and filter rings. How channelling magic glyphs could be painted on his hands or aid in the creation of D-wire. Although the exact process of it's creation he could not find in this book no matter how much he looked for it. There were some examples of images of different glyphs as drawn by different mages poking between chapters that he truly tried to commit to memory. Albeit every time he turned the page he did struggle to remember them. There was so much to learn and so much that overwhelmed him about the magical discipline.

Reading between rests carried him on till dusk. By that time Raeyn had managed to read quite a hefty chunk of the massive tome. And so very much inspired by the new knowledge he was that he'd even forgotten to eat until a rumble in his stomach and an ordeal in the distance snapped him out of his deep concentration.

With fatigued eyes he absentmindedly looked towards the noises behind him and almost instantly regretted doing so for out of the corner of his eye the Inarta caught a glimpse of a naked woman conversing with a clearly bothered seeker. He somehow managed to miss the circle of students that have been fussing her prior and thus did not catch onto her Kelvic nature straight away. Blushing Raeyn turned back to his book, embarrassed for her as she seemed far from it.

A few chimes have passed and the break in concentration seemed to have ruined the flow of his reading. With quite the effort and determination he managed to trail his eyes across the very last paragraphs in the tome until there were no more. It was time to place it back on the shelves but to his horror, the strange woman stood just inches from the book's rightful place.

In his head Raeyn counted all the possible outcomes of the situation. He could wait until she, in her seemingly dazed state moved on or he could get up and risk a very much unwelcome conversation. The rumble in his stomach prompted him to do the latter. And so the Inarta in his beautiful, clean clothing and hair as red as flames got up and made a straight line for the book shelves where SHE had stood. Had had almost done it. He had almost accomplished his goal of being the most invisible flamboyantly dressed man in Mizahar until the unthinkable happened. A book title caught his eye that he could not pass up.

"Alchemical glyphs."

Raeyn hesitated. Either way at this point he had spent more than a split of a second by the bookshelf and the prospect of a conversation was a very real threat looming on the horizon. And so if he was going to risk it he might as well make it work his while. Long marble fingers snatched the tome on the shelf and he splayed it open in his hands as he turned his back to the bookshelf and leaned against it. Come what may. This evening Raeyn was living on the wild side - relatively speaking.

An Evenin' at the Library

It was just as her visions were ebbing that the kelvic heard the rustle of robes and the perceptible clip of well-shoed feet against the glass flooring behind her. Turning her head ever so slightly, the kelvic peered just passed her fluffy curls to catch a glimpse. A rather elegantly dressed man was striding determinedly towards the bookshelf next to hers.

Paaie's dark gaze swept from his shock of braided red hair to his fair, angular face and down his luxurious, fur-trimmed cloak, right down to his shoes. He looked stern, she thought, mistaking his embarrassment at her nudity for an elitist attitude of some thread. The kelvic's wide nose wrinkled lightly. Who's this peacock think he is? The kelvic was about to toss her mane over her shoulder and saunter off to lick her wounded pride, when the man let out a murmur. "Alchemical glyphs."

His voice hummed with such excitement it gave her pause. The feline sideeyed the alchemist subtly as he reached for a particularly serious looking book. As he became absorbed in the pages of the book, curiosity seeped into the kelvic. What was so interesting?—besides her! (Of course, she was still riding on the endorphins that were inflating her ego from all the attention she had received from the students before.)

The feline went back to looking at her shelf, pretending to ignore the alchemist in the same manner he seemed to be ignoring her. As she did, she scooted towards him a side-step. She stole a cautionary glance at him. Then scooted towards him a little more so that she was standing just two feet away. As if she possessed her cat ears in this form—it was hard to shirk the habits of one form while in the other—the kelvic cocked her head in his direction as if she might hear his very thoughts.

As she did, caught a tangible sense of his scent and was so startled by the musky hue of undeniable D O G that she hesitated. Well that explained his aloofness, she decided. Dog handlers didn't know good company if it bit their behind. Paaie finally scooted lose enough so she could peer over his hand, which was holding the book, at the writing inked across the pages. Her dark gaze flickered over the picture of an odd symbol. When the alchemist went to turn the page the kelvic reached out and rested her hand gently over his to turn the page back—she wasn't done looking yet.

Paaie absorbed the picture, pupils dilating in the dim of the candlelight, puzzling over what mysterious interests this stranger pursued. "What is-" Her shiber-tinged accent began to ask a question but, just then, the seeker who was chastising her before hurried up and interjected with an embarrassed apology. "I apologise, sir, this young lady is new in Lhavit—quite foreign—and does not seem to understand the rules we keep for all." He shot the kelvic a stern look and held a robe up in his hands meaningfully.

The kelvic sighed and pouted but she did take the robe and donned it. It was a bit too long for her in the arm but she didn't seem to mind as she rolled them up a bit to fit. Satisfied his nuisance visitor was now modestly dressed the seeker pointed across the library to some aisles where there were no other patrons. "Maybe I can help you find something you like over there." The older man hinted. Paaie just pouted at him. The seeker shrugged exasperatedly; calling defeat, he left them be. After he was gone, the kelvic went back to peering over the alchemist's hands to see the book he was looking at. "What is this? I think I see before." She lifted her dark gaze to Raeyn's and there was a wholesome and honest curiosity dancing among her freckles.

An Evenin' at the Library

Raeyn's brow furrowed as he tried to make sense of the words on the paper. But there was not enough willpower left within him to shut out the presence of the girl. From the corner of his eye he saw her inch closer and closer. And the closer she got the more he wished he'd just drop the book and flee the library in some grotesque manner of a silent comedy sketch one might see at a theatre. Her touch made his blood run cold without a flinch. If his sister had been there, the teasing and jeering that would follow would certainly drive Raeyn to an early grave, so perhaps yet another time of many he counted his many many blessings. How was it that he, the refined and reclusive man that h was, managed to get himself into so many of these ordeals? The city was as mad as it was beautiful.

It was the seeker who came to his rescue, clothing the girl and apologising for her intrusion profusely. He must have somehow sensed Raeyn's discomfort for he ever attempted to coax the girl to another part of the library but to no avail. Silently the Inarta stared at the pages of his book in desperation for his eyes to avoid the scene but his ears could not do so quite so easily.

He had almost closed the book, deeming there to be no knowledge in it that he at his level of expertise could comprehend, hidden within. But then her words reached his ears.

With questions he needed answers to at the top of his tongue, Raeyn finally faced her, oh so very glad that she was finally clothed. Something only a handful of men would feel for she was really quite good looking in spite of the freckles. Even the unobservant man that he was could not say otherwise.

"Are you an avid reader of magical texts? How curious." he spoke, a soft smile appearing on his face. It was no easy feat to capture Raeyn's attention but she had managed it in less than a whole heartbeat with one simple sentence. "I... can't say I have my self. But I would be indebted to you if you could tell me a little about it. I'm... doing some research for an assignment you see. " he lied. " But where are my manners. Welcome to Lhavit, though I fear you must hear those words wherever you go. My name is Raeyn. A pleasure to make your acquaintance m'lady."

The white crescent mark beneath his eye glowed in the refracted sunset light inside the library, as he regarded her with inquisitiveness. There was a softness about him though the manner with which he spoke was rather formal. His hand reached out for hers and brought it to her lips so that he could kiss her knuckles in a greeting only befitting a true lady for if he wanted knowledge from her, he doubted he was going to get it without pleasantries in return.
