It was very rare to be able to see what Kynier saw then. The look of amazement on Farris’ face when the shield was cast. The man was so intrigued that he reinitiated his auristics. Without the use of his own Kynier could see the glimmer of djed in the man’s eyes as he looked at the shield. It caused Kynier to smirk. Nodding to the rhetorical question. Though when Farris admitted to only know three disciplines Kynier felt disappointment. They were three of the arts that he already knew which made it worse. It wasn’t complete discouragement. Kynier was stretched thin in his studies, trying to not let any of them exceed the other too quickly. So it was quite possible that the other mage had a more extensive understanding of his chosen disciplines.

No one was approaching or to be seen. Kynier didn’t yet feel any further need to conceal their conversation they was Farris did. He understood what the man meant though. If shielding wasn’t in his repertoire Kynier would’ve faced the exact same issue. Fire was not something you wanted to practice in a confined space of your home. But then he mentioned a place. The Midnight Gem. Kynier hadn’t heard of it and wondered what sort of place it was. That was a question to be asked later though. For now he needed to express the more delicate ones while the shield still operated.

“I also know Reimancy and Voiding. There are others that I’m aware of that I’d like to learn as some point. My teacher wasn’t a family member nor was he part of any affiliation. He didn’t completely agree with my coming to Sunberth and wanted to teach me more. But there’s a time for study and a time to act.” Kynier scratched his chin thoughtfully as he watched the other mage. “I would be curious to know what you have learned in your studies Farris. A knowledge exchange could prove mutually beneficial.”

It felt like a risk. Allowing someone the opportunity to get close enough to develop a connection. Farris took risks. Practicing in Execution Square of all places. Coming out of his solidarity was bound to be rough. Yet the man didn’t seem to understand yet the brutality of the city. Kynier acknowledged that this would be more of a project for him and a learning experience for Farris. Still, thinking that there was someone else available to provide second opinions without the long lectures Doler tended to do have. The only thing Kynier could be excited about in truth was the possibility that the other mage had focused on a different element than he had.

“You say you work at the Fence? I’ve heard of the place but haven’t ever been there. That would make for an excellent rendezvous for discussions about further plans.”

Magic was Farris' passion in life. Never had he found anything else that challenged him so thoroughly. Nor had he found anything else that promised him possibilities so limitless. While Farris was naive in some aspects of his life there was a very thorough understanding of the need for power and the resources that could be accumulated with it. The Reimancer did not hunt after gold, nor did he branch out for an abundance of practical, mundane knowledge. Rather, he'd indulged himself thoroughly in the pursuit of the arcane and the intellectual, perhaps forgetting to learn key pieces of information that might preserve his existence. Naivete was not something he expected himself capable of, however, it was meted into his mind over and over that he continued to underestimate Sunberth. The city was clearly rife with people hunting for his kind, and even without it, violence was a massive problem in the city that was left unresolved by design. Rather than continue to muse about the nature of the city, he let his thoughts rest upon the matter at hand. After all, the barrier Kynier raised only lasted for so long.

"You have access to a wide variety of arcane knowledge, though. That's quite interesting! Four disciplines, by my count? More you haven't mentioned? I'm curious to see how much you know of each one."

Farris hoped to let on that his knowledge of at least one of his chosen disciplines was somewhat extensive. By no means was he a powerful Reimancer, but he felt quite comfortable with the elements he could manipulate to the point that he'd begun practice in the combination of elements. Lightning was a fickle mistress but a pursuit that he found himself utterly fascinated with. However, it also posed a danger in that it was difficult to hide one's practice at his point in his study. The Midnight Gem solved some, but not all of his problems and he was quite content with his arrangement with Kelski. Risks were taken and they seemed to pay off their dividends, but such risks were rendered quite unnecessary after and he was glad for the respite. Discovery was the last thing he was after.

"I'm inclined to agree. From past experience, learning is best done when ideas are able to be exchanged and a conversation can be held about findings. It's been difficult since coming to Sunberth. I've kept a catalog of my understanding inscribed in Nader-Canoch since coming to the city. It's been very useful, but even those inscriptions are merely thoughts, observations. It's difficult attempting to re-create a science without other minds to share such observations with."

This was a risk. It could end very badly if the both of them weren't careful and yet, it was a necessity. Without seeking out assistance, it was immensely complicated attempting to sort through the framework of the mind and create an understanding. So, Farris found the risk worth taking. He'd extend an arm to this compatriot, this fellow mage, and tread the path towards earning his trust. It was obvious that the other man held intelligence and knew the city better than he did. The worst that could happen was already a very real fear of his. The best case scenario, however, was limitless in benefit to the both of them. Farris was pulled from his thoughts when the suggestion Kynier posed crossed his mind. He shrugged his shoulders noncommittally before he responded.

"It's possible, but Zeke often drops in and out, then disappears for days. I never know when he's going to show up and I'd much rather not have him be aware of our talents. He deals with a great number of people and could make my life very difficult. You're right in that I've been far too lax. I've been lucky and it's not smart for me to continue to press that luck."

Surely, there wasn't very much time until the barrier around them fell, but Farris would take the time to ask one final question.

"Which elements have you taken with Reimancy?"

Truth be told, his talents weren’t nearly what they should be had he been a fully dedicated mage. Coming to Sunberth was part of a long term objective he hoped to accomplish. Or at least enact or start. His knowledge of voiding had come almost to a complete standstill. The last time he attempted it in study he overgave and had an almost fatal accident. Shielding and reimancy were advancing at about the same pace. Glyphing had come along well, and auristics had somehow turned into his expertise which he didn’t anticipate. All that could be attributed to his environment. In any other city he’d have probably advanced to a respectable level of talent these last few years. As it was, other mages were probably more capable than he was.

Rethinking Farris’ three disciplines, Kynier was sure that he could receive a lot of insight from his peer. And he could offer the man more schools to study in exchange. “Five disciplines. Auristics, Glyphing, Reimancy, Shielding, and Voiding. I’ve been distracted by my other efforts in this city for some time and have over looked my training.”

Farris elaborated on the reliability of his employer’s schedule. Kynier wasn’t really purposing that there was where they should practice. Only that it would be a good place for quick exchanges for planning their actions. In his chest at home Kynier still had a few items he needed to pawn off. He didn’t want to accidentally try to sell a Sun Birth longsword with the insignia to a store that had affiliation to them. Gradually reducing that number with an occasional visit to the Fence didn’t seem like a bad idea. But it seemed to make Farris nervous so he allowed it to pass.

With a glance Kynier could tell the shield was nearly ready to fall, bringing their privacy to an end. Farris took advantage with a question. The inquiry itself told him a lot. Farris was a Reimancer. While Kynier was technically an Aurist he didn’t really identify himself based off any single form of practice. He wanted to be balanced, versatile. Not dependent on any one thing, which is part of what’s helped him survive so long here while being in the midst of the city’s daily routine. Farris was not similar in that regard from the little that Kynier knew about him.

“Fire is the only one I have taken thus far. Not surprising. But it is very practical for beginning mages. The next element I would choose would be air. It is more subtle than the others I would imagine. More discreet. That would be very useful in this place.” Kynier’s eyes wavered to the shield. The faint distortion in the air ceased as the djed spent the last of its reserve. Kynier felt the air grow still in the shield’s wake. Trying to act as though nothing unusual had just transpired, Kynier took his Mighty quill and flipped the spent scroll over.

In the silence he scratched at the parchment forming another rune. Pond, often translated as balance. Kynier liked how the rune circled on itself granting the impression of endless continuity. He supposed that in a way it was his mantra. Any time he began to really exceed at one thing his other talents would undergo a surge to close the gap. It also felt appropriate for the two mages sitting in silence. Their characteristics would benefit from the other. Farris needed more versatility. More tools at his disposal. Kynier needed to apply more dedication to his arcane advancement. Both were too much of one and not enough of the other. Left to their own devices both mages would eventually fail in one regard or another.

“If meeting at your place of employment is less than ideal, we should consider something else then. I do feel that collaboration would be mutually beneficial.” He said with a quieter tone. An idea that he had earlier in the season refreshed itself in his mind. Purchasing property and converting a space for secret arcane practice. Kynier couldn’t afford that on his own for some time, but if Farris were capable of sharing the burden of investment… a proposal for a later time. This was their first meeting and to propose such an idea so soon seemed foolhardy.

Farris was never afforded the opportunity to further his repertoire. Magic was something he was taught to have an appreciation for as a boy, but it wasn't until he'd already become a man that his father began to educate him properly. The city of Ravok was secretive with its extensive pool of mages, keeping them on tabs or under the arm of the Black Sun. It was a miracle that the Sagallius devotee survived as long as he had in the city at all, but it clearly wasn't to last. In the two years since the man's death Farris attempted to keep his study, but grief postponed such pursuits until he felt properly focused. It was, ironically, his arrival in Sunberth that encouraged him to proceed.

The city's reputation kept the young man as a recluse, opting solitude over the chance that his secrets might be discovered. Quietly, he furthered his knowledge but the constraints fell upon him and caused him to again reach into the world. It was fortunate that he had, however, seeing that individuals like Kynier existed within the city and could offer insights and power that the bearded mage sorely craved. To him, the study and cultivation of his talents were like a drug, a festering obsession welling deep in the mind and craving satisfaction. It was when Kynier admitted his negligible talents with Reimancy that Farris held a sensation of superiority. While Farris might not know about the city or be as extensive, it seemed that the privilege of specialisation was on his side. Contrary to Kynier's philosophy of diversification, Farris was of the opinion that furthering a single or select few talents was far more rewarding. It seemed that the pair of them were as far apart as mages could be and the differences in opinion in one might serve to better the other.

Satisfied with the notion of sharing knowledge with such an individual, Farris was left at odds with what he had said. It seemed that he was cautious at times when it was unnecessary and ventured into risk at inopportune moments. Fear gripped at the mage and yet eagerness tempered it in turn, creating an internal conflict that came to his attention as he furthered his discussion with Kynier. Both he and the Kelvic had taught him different sides of himself and he was glad for their association. As Kynier spoke, Farris listened without interrupting. It just so happened that the mage wished for his second element to be the one he possessed. A coincidence that Farris believed was the doing of Sagallius' manipulations. It wasn't often that the mage thought of his faith and the God to whom he pledged his allegiance, but it was incorrect to not see the meddling when it was placed directly in front of him.

Farris's eyes glinted with the shiver of djed as he allowed it to coalesce within the orbs. He let in a breath as Kynier spoke, eager to see the djed within the shield and watch what transpired when it died. He did not focus on Kynier or the glyph he created, but rather, observed. The wall of djed rose high around them, but holes were present within it as it shriveled and withered. When the time was completed, it fell into non-existence and he further considered Kynier's proposal. Zeke was an unpredictable individual as it stood, but Farris was an able employee, capable of handling the going abouts of the Fence without his involvement. Perhaps the older man was content to let Farris squeeze the mizas out of his patronage rather than do it himself. He reflected on the past few weeks within the Fence and considered Kynier's proposal with a clear lens of thought.

"I wasn't of the mind that we'd linger there either. I was more concerned about Zeke's patronage arriving at an untimely moment. However, there's an easy way around that as well. Hold on..." Farris reached into his rucksack to retrieve his journal. Insights and doubts alike were poured onto the surface, inscribed in Nader-canoch so that only studied mages might understand what was written. He plucked his pen from the binding, reaching towards Kynier's inkwell and coating the tip until it was black. Unlike the rest of the inscriptions within, Farris wrote this one in Common, flipping the book over for Kynier to read when it was complete.

I'll be more than happy to guide you in Reimancy. I took fire as my first element, as well. Further study granted me access to air. But, more importantly, the further use of Reimancy grants a practitioner the capability to produce 'para-elements'. Lightning is the combination of Fire and Air.

He provided Kynier with the insight, curious to know if the other gentleman was privy to the intricacies of the disciplines he knew. "Come in the mornings when you can. Often enough I'm cleaning within the Fence and there's little to nothing else to do until the afternoon once the magpies come in with their take of the day." It wasn't a secret that the Fence procured stolen merchandise. After all, with a name like that... discretion was rather difficult. "We can use it as a base of operations at the very least, but when it comes to something practical we need to inquire about options." After all, Farris wasn't going to offer the Midnight Gem, his only sanctuary for such practices, to someone else. Kelski was gracious enough to tolerate him, and he wasn't going to spoil the opportunity.

Farris, of course, also craved an opportunity to be able to carve a home within Sunberth that wasn't contingent on the gracious disposition of others. He appreciated it from the Kelvic, but there were limitations to the place and some number of people that made the place their home.

It sounded as though The Fence received a consistent flow of customers. It wasn’t really that surprising. There was a significant amount of theft occurring on a regular basis within the city. If the store lived up to its namesake then it would be quite ideal for many a Sunberthian. Farris took the liberty of Kynier’s ink. Farris was a person that carried around a journal around all the time. So for him to so hastily utilize someone else’s supply to write down a thought, it must have been critical. Kynier discovered why when the mage turned the contents of the page over for Kynier to read. “Hmm.” That he didn’t expect. While his instructor alluded to para-elements Kynier still wasn’t at a level to engage in the exercise of them. But now knowing the secret to conjuring lightning reinvigorated his desire to expand his reimancy.

It was difficult for Kynier to say who was learning more from this encounter. Farris was revealing a lot of himself. His capabilities, his expertise, and even his place of employment. While Kynier had made more demonstrations with personal and world magic. Farris was proving to be extremely eager to create an arrangement. From the way the man spoke Kynier suspected it was more for the opportunity for more knowledge. While for him it was about having a second opinion in matters he had to deal with on his own. Farris was driven and educated. While Kynier tried to notice things others wouldn’t he wasn’t perfect.

After listening to Farris’ proposal Kynier nodded in agreement. At the very least they now had an established form of communication. There was nothing he could offer Farris in that regard. Doler’s whims were unpredictable and drove him all over Sunberth. That left the responsibility of correspondence in his hands. As a person with introverted tendencies that was going to be challenging. Though finding “reasons” to visit the Fence would be easy enough.

Dipping his magic quill in the ink Kynier began writing something down as well. He wrote it along the bottom of the parchment. When he was done he turned it around and slid it across the table for Farris. I would welcome that. In immediate exchange I can offer the basics to Glyphing. It requires less subtly to practice and can be done in the open. It also compliments all other disciplines.

“That sounds like a plan,” Kynier said looking over Farris’ shoulder. He thought he saw someone walk by but wasn’t sure. Slowly he reached over and took back the parchment, folding it over several times until it was an eight of its normal size. Kynier then pulled the book on Arumenic closer and pretended to read its contents. The sound of soft footsteps echoed between the shelves and across the dusty spines. “There are somethings I could do to get rid of. Perhaps I’ll come by the shop and see if I can get a good price for them. It may be a couple of days before I can though.”

The Reimancer was satisfied with Kynier's response. With their privacy gone and much accomplished in the time they had to speak freely, there was little reason to linger. Farris learned less of Kynier than he liked, but he was by no means pressed to learn. The other mage sated his curiosity with a demonstration of not one, but two magicks the Reimancer was as of yet unfamiliar with. There was much to consider, and certainly, a measure of caution was needed. But, Farris was never very good at tempering his aspirations. Greedily the mage sought after knowledge despite full awareness of the possible consequences. Magic was, after all, not something that should be thrown about casually or without purpose. A smile cast upon his features as he reviews the words again. Glyphing wasn't something he'd ever heard of before meeting Kynier. It seemed a way to bolster and capture other magicks, a concept that struck the mage as utterly fascinating.

A magic that can be practiced in the open? What a paradox in this city. I'm curious to see what else Kynier might know... he thought to himself. Farris was quite impressed with Kynier, yet on another side he was disappointed. The Glypher showed a talent for understanding djed. The fact that he knew so many different magicks was intriguing in its own right. But, he was scattered and unfocused in his study. From what the other mage told him, he knew all the disciplines that Farris himself did, but without the discipline to expand his knowledge in it. It made the Reimancer wonder more about the man. What did he prioritize over the reinforcement of knowledge? What did Kynier do for a living? Such questions weren't asked because they weren't pertinent to the situation, though as Farris stood to leave, he was curious.

"A good idea. We buy everything, you know," he said with a laugh, shrugging his shoulders somewhat. The Reimancer raised his hand to his chin, absently stroking his beard as he considered Kynier for a moment. "Take your time, bring as much as you'd like. I'll see if I can give you a better deal than most."

The Reimancer took some time to hear it, but there were footsteps in the stacks behind him. His gray eyes narrowed as he raised his rucksack from the floor. Slinging it over his shoulder, he kept his senses open, pulling at the very core of his being. Djed flooded into his eyes, his gaze flickering with the light of djed. There was an aura flickering behind the stacks, a presence that might not have stood out so much if other people were present. It seemed that the figure was studying the shelves and possibly attempting to pry into a completed conversation. Farris did not act out or draw attention to himself as he followed the movements of that aura. When the figure didn't reveal itself, he shrugged his shoulders. He allowed the Sight to flicker from his gaze as he began to walk away. "Have a pleasant day, Kynier," he'd call out to the man. Farris wasn't certain whether to call him ally or associate, but for now, he was more than a stranger.

The Reimancer followed his original path to the entrance to the library, looking back on occasion to make sure whatever was lingering behind that shelf didn't follow him. There was nothing for the Reimancer that pressed for Farris' time that day and his pace, logically, was slower as a result.
