32nd of Summer 518 8th Bell

It was unfortunate that the Riverside district was on the complete opposite side of the city from where Kynier lived. It was the most peaceful one that he’d experienced among the districts he was actually welcome to enter. Whether it was due to being the domain of the Night Eyes or not was hard to say. Mainly because it didn’t seem like anyone was really sure. Though the uncertainty did manage to keep members of the Sun Birth and Daggerhand at bay. The few of them that did venture inside never seemed to bother anyone either.

Kynier was going down the main road looking for the large stone building. That was allegedly enough of a description to be able to find The Fence where Farris worked. The shop in question was supposed to be attached at the end of the complex. For over a bell Kynier wandered before he eventually found it. It was a very large stone building that had been divided into sub complexes. Kynier had brought with him four of the daggers he had acquired over the last season from… other people. Apart from those he had his standard equipment with him. Also in his possession was a sheet of parchment with writing on both sides he had brought for Farris.

With a stifled yawn he pushed his way through the door. In order to get to the shop so early Kynier had left his home before dawn. Calling it a shop was probably a stretch. As soon as he walked in the door he stopped in disbelief. The room wasn’t large nor was it… furnished. A single large, rectangular desk rested near the far end of the room. Behind the desk was a doorway to another room. That was all there was to the place. No one was sitting behind the desk either. Cautiously Kynier stepped inside. He looked to both of the corners he couldn’t see when he first walked in. There was nothing and no one.

“What sort of shop doesn’t have an inventory on display?” he asked no one in particular. The room was dimly lit as Syna had no direct path into the building at this bell to bath the place with her light. A few shadows were idly resting. Kynier spoke out softly in their language, Makath. “Hello there. What is your name?” A single shadow drifted from its place towards him.

“Nightstalker. I’m Povair. Why are you here?” it hissed softly.

“To make acquaintance with the one known as Farris.” Povair hissed in what seemed to be displeasure at that. “He could prove valuable in use if not knowledge.”

“He’s rigid,” the shadow said while returning to the place it was before. Kynier took its description of the other mage into account. It was not long ago they met for the first time. Both of them had been pleased by the ideal of shared knowledge. Yet his goddess, the Night Mistress, may not appreciate such a collaboration. No. It could be a tool. Kynier could learn the secrets Farris knew, or be present when the mage learned them. As She had her children everywhere to see things for Her, Kynier was trying to make the same sort of network himself. Until recently it had been restricted to beggars and urchins. Farris was in a valuable location. With the right approach, the Reimancer could be convinced of keeping an eye out for him. But Farris was intelligent. To avoid those difficult questions Kynier would need to take a long subtle approach.

Stepping up to the desk he stood there and looked through the doorway into the back. Kynier could see and hear no one back there. “Farris,” he called, “you back there?”

[The Fence] Making an Exchange

There was always a great deal of moving and shifting to do in the mornings at the Fence. Farris already spent the past bell rearranging shelves in the back of the store in order to conduct an inventory. A piece of parchment bore a list of precious metals and gemstones, arranged in boxes and stowed away in a large chest for safekeeping. The mage found the sorting to be a somewhat relaxing event. His thoughts drifted throughout, from the encounter he'd had with Kelski some moons ago, to his meeting with Kynier just days before. The thoughts helped distract him from the fatigue that set in his bones, as well.

Farris struggled to rise in the early bells and found it awkward to dress and arrive at the Fence in time for work. His step was slower and his breath hitched. However, his gray eyes were alert as he sifted through a mess of unsorted silver cutlery. First, like utensils were sorted away before further splitting by size. Then, he grouped them into sets and placed them neatly into their own box before setting that aside as well. The efforts persisted for well over twenty chimes before he heard the sounds of shuffling past the back door. Strange words in a somewhat familiar voice were spoken. Farris dismissed the words as the ramblings of a madman for the time he used to complete his task.

The room where Kynier was had little in it save for the desk. Certainly, Zeke nor Farris could be bothered to put anything on display. After all, the Fence was neither charitable nor pristine in its practices. As such, its wares would not be divulged in the event that their original owner might seek to claim them anew. It wasn't until the madman's voice called out once again, seeking him by name that he realized that it was Kynier.

Oops, he thought to himself, chuckling at the idea of the other mage being confused for a loon. He drew forth to his full stature and reached towards the highest shelf. Mizas were under lock and key, with Farris bearing a keyring in the waking hours only to surrender it to Zeke when he left for the day. He filled his till with sufficient funds for a moderate transaction, recalling that Kynier mentioned visiting the place to offload some acquisitions.

"Oh, yes. I'll be right there," he answered, securing the lock before opening the door to the front of the store. He locked the door behind him before he placed the till behind him and underneath the desk. With his station in order, he shifted his gaze to Kynier and looked over the mage with an air of scrutiny. He'd only heard Kynier's voice before and was unsure of why he'd spoken out with no one in his vicinity. His gray eyes studied Kynier for a moment, a curiosity alight in his expression. His lips curved into a smile as he asked, "Did someone just leave? I could've sworn I heard you speak before calling out to me." When the Glypher answered, Farris shifted his position to lean forward against the desk. Immediately, however, he drew back upon notice of the gear that Kynier carried with him.

Clearly, Kynier was in another world. He carried the tools of one whose life was spent in the field. He wondered for a moment what the mage in front of him did for a living. Perhaps he might discover the answer. Not pressed for time by any means, he stepped back from the table so that Kynier might use it however he chose. The mage considered sitting down on the stool visible behind the till before he looked beneath the desk to find the other. Often enough, customers were rather anxious or fidgeting throughout their visit. Kynier was clearly much different from the magpies he scammed on a regular basis.

"Would you like a seat?" he asked. Without waiting for an answer, he raised the spare stool and placed it on the other side for Kynier to use if he so chose. Satisfied with his hospitality, the Reimancer took his seat, fingers laced together and wrists flat on the desk as he asked, "So... what have we here? Business? Conversation? A bit of both?" The mage was curious to see what Kynier might offer. Their previous encounter proved to be very intriguing.

When Farris walked through the doorway Kynier immediately sized him up. The man’s eyes were alert yet the rest of his body did not seem so energized. The man’s posture looked more forced today than it had the last time Kynier had seen him and his movements were a bit slower. Many times he had experienced that exact state of being. Farris had been practicing his disciplines, and thoroughly from the look of it. Farris gave the nearly empty room a quick look around before asking his question. Though he was fatigued the Reimancer’s real strengths had not been dulled.

“No one left. Sometimes it helps to hear my thoughts aloud,” he lied. “I’d wager you know how that is.” It was then that the other mage looked him over. Kynier supposed it was the sight of the weapons at his hip and the street conditioned clothing that gave Farris the expression he had. One of mild surprise and curiosity. In a way he had given the man fair warning with the advice on getting a weapon to defend himself.

When the stool was brought over from the other side of the desk Kynier accepted it. Sitting a little awkwardly, for he never enjoyed sitting on a stool, he noted Farris’ business posture. Though the reimancer questioned what they would be doing today. Kynier smiled a little. He reached into his bag and took out the four spare daggers he had brought with him. They had been cleaned but were clearly well used. Small knicks on the blades could be seen as well as some fading in the cloth wrapped around the hilts. Kynier set them on the table for Farris’ inspection. They had no special qualities or any significant designs to give them character. They were four simple daggers that he had taken off of those that had wished him harm.

“I find myself in possession of too many daggers. There simply isn’t enough room on my belt for all of them.” Kynier reached into his pocket next and pulled out the sheet of parchment that had been folded to a sixteenth of its size. “So business,” he spoke with a lower tone, “to disguise the conversation.” At that he slid the folded parchment across the table to Farris. “As someone who reads Nader-canoch you may find this more interesting than I did. This has the illustrations to the root glyphs that I can recollect. The glyphs are a variant of the ancient tongue. By each of them I wrote the most common translations of the particular runes.” Kynier set an elbow down on the table and rested his on the tip of his thumb.

In his mind there was a tally going on between him and Farris. The clerk had given him a tip that would be useful at a later time in his skillset. Kynier just gave Farris a solid foundation to a very useful world magic. Kynier took out a vial of ink and uncorked it before retrieving his lightning colored blue-white writing utensil, The Mighty Quill.

Wetting the tip with ink Kynier started drawing a rune on the palm of his left hand. Whenever Farris unfolded the parchment to examine the root glyphs he would later recollect that Kynier was drawing Ruwe. In general it meant “under” or “beneath”. The last time Kynier attempted this the results were less than desirable. It wasn’t going to become a full sigil, just a focus. “The runes can give focus, alter the purpose, or amplify djed.” Ruwe had a three dimensional aspect to its design that was uncommon among the root glyphs. Kynier first showed the end result to Farris before bringing his left hand close to his core.

Eyes closed, Kynier stilled his thoughts and banished all distractions. From the calmness of his mind he could feel the presence of his djed lying dormant within, ready to be used. Drawing it out Kynier opened his eyes just a sliver and focused on Ruwe and the space above it. Mentally he guided his power through the glyph which began to shift. The pattern swirled on itself like a piece of ancient mechanics that Kynier had once seen. After a half chime a small ripple in the air formed. Space ripped open to create a portal to the void half the size of his palm.

“My favorite aspect, is that it helps to delay the onset of overgiving for more daring spells.” Kynier only maintained the portal for five ticks before releasing the flow of djed. After another chime the gateway collapsed on itself leaving no trace. The ink on his palm had been consumed by the spell, leaving a few smudges behind.

[The Fence] Making an Exchange

It wasn't an introverted personality that kept Farris out of the public. Rather, he found himself an oddity in the city of Sunberth. Magic aside, it was the nature of scholarship that separated Farris from his fellows. It formed a barrier that was impenetrable, the need for secrecy only making the isolation more prevalent. Most of his time was spent in private, or at the Fence like he was doing now. The idea of being out in the world eluded Farris, who considered himself rather aloof by nature. When circumstance or work required him to engage with others, however, his presence of mind was in the moment with no desire to free himself from such company. Farris' demeanor was at ease, in his natural environment as Kynier passed him the blades for inspection. He pulled each from their sheaths in turn, inspecting the blade. Upon each of them were nicks and scratches. Edgewear was present on the blades and their pommels showed signs of scuff marks.

I wonder how many times these were passed from gangster to gangster before finally getting sold off...

Farris made his assumptions and left them at that. Always so curious, Farris had a tendency to employ the use of Auristics in his job quite often. However, ever since he'd last parted ways with Kynier he'd noticed a strange offset of fatigue. He knew the source. Overgiving was harsh on the body, but the fear of it couldn't hope to stop the mage's indulgence into magic. No, he dug deeper with each time it transpired, forever seeking to improve upon his efforts of before. It was an addiction, one he couldn't bring himself to stop. He nearly reached into the depths of his djed and called upon magic again, but he decided against it. Rather than do that, he set the daggers aside as he considered his offer to Kynier. While the other mage was a sort of ally to him, it wouldn't do to simply give an offer that was too high. He considered his price before he said,

"I can give you seven and a half silver per blade," he offered as a front. He listened to the mage as he lowered his tone and nodded readily. Kynier slid a sheet of paper across the table. He offered him a sheet of paper filled with sigils and runes that he recognized well. The mage learned the language of Nader-canoch in Ravok, often reading the texts at night that his father offered him. Like Farris, the older mage wrote his findings in the ancient tongue and the idea was one that stuck with Farris through the years. He read each rune and kept the parchment flat on the table. The mage knew Nader-canoch as the language of mages and knew that practitioners often communicated with one another in the language to avoid being understood by the public. Now, Kynier told him that Nader-canoch was also used to inscribe glyphs that could store and amplify djed.

Kynier told him of this in their previous encounter and even painted glyphs in front of him, but connecting it to the ancient tongue as he did now made much more sense. Farris watched as Kynier next drew a familiar rune on his palm. He could read it upon his flesh and it seemed to have no connection to what was transpiring. What happened next, however, the mage could relate to far more. Thirty ticks passed in silence as Kynier ripped through dimensions and produced a portal that he maintained for only a few moments. The ink that Kynier drew upon his flesh faded once consumed and the Reimancer wondered what might have transpired.

I should have observed his palm with Auristics. I don't want to keep feeling this sensation and yet... the discipline makes the world easier to understand. It's interesting to confirm Kynier's knowledge of Voiding, I suppose.

Farris shifted his movements and sought after the pen in his own bag. He used the inkwell on his side of the table. He dabbed the tip of his pen into it before painting letters on the palm of his hand in turn. The Reimancer wrote the word 'Dala' upon the flesh of his right palm. There was no sign of magic upon his palm, but he was patient to discover what might transpire. He lowered his left hand to the table before looking curiously to Kynier. His fellow mage kept his eyes trained on the rune as he manipulated his magick and so Farris sought the same.

The Reimancer willed djed to flush from the depths of his soul. It rose forth and traveled through his arm. Farris continued to watch the rune inscribed upon his palm. Res flooded from the letters, taking the ink with it and dissipating the Glyph. The task of producing Res was easy for the Reimancer, and he was far more curious to test the merits of Glyphing with his actions.

"I noticed a slight difference in pace. So the aid that Glyphing provides is a means of smoothing out the process of other magicks? How do you store spells into paper? You did that last time."

It was possible to see it through the eyes, the way that Farris’ mind was sorting through what he had just witness. The Reimancer’s thoughts were establishing connections. Kynier could tell through the glimmer in his eyes. It was quickly followed with a furrow of frustration. To what Kynier had no idea. Then he had taken out his own quill and ink. Kynier watched as Dala was formed on the palm of the other’s hand. In the silence he waited to see what Farris was doing. Before he was of a mind to ask he saw the res form in the hand and absorb the ink.

Kynier listened to Farris’ questions. They were good questions. While Farris asked them he withdrew a sheet of parchment from his pack. Dipping his magic quill back in the ink Kynier then set it to parchment and began to draw the answer to Farris’ question. “You must create what is referred to as a sigil in order to store djed into an item. It need not be paper, paper is just the most practical and inexpensive.” Kynier was drawing something he hadn’t attempted before. He could’ve done something that he’d done dozens of times, like drawing Dala to augment a Shield. Instead, he chose to attempt to demonstrate to Farris a greater complexity to Glyphing that Kynier was only just beginning to expand on.

The magic quill worked its way around the parchment to form Sutla. But it wasn’t a complete rendition of the rune, and Farris would notice that as Kynier came close to the end. But Kynier spoke as his quill formed the partial rune. “The first stage is referred to as the Focus. It is where you channel the djed after all three stages of the sigil have been formed. It can be used to augment as well as ‘smooth out’. In the more advanced stages it is said to be able to combine multiple disciplines in a single spell. The runes themselves provide a flow for the power. If not carefully or correctly drawn, the djed goes off track. Which can lead to the scroll erupting. In the early stages, that is something you should expect often. So don’t store your scrolls next to any flammable materials.”

He paused to look at Farris. “That’s too low of an offer,” he said in regards to the daggers. “If you were to offer a gold mizza and a half I would be much more agreeable.” Kynier then pointed at the table space in front of Farris with his quill, and spoke with a lowered voice, “Start simple. Either a small fire or a small void. Use whichever rune you feel is most appropriate to your choice.” At that Kynier returned to his scroll in the making. For a moment he just stared at it while forming a mental image. With a general idea in mind he began to integrate Yaq into his work.

The eyes were certainly portals to the soul. Whether they showed the light of one manipulating djed or they showed the puzzlement that slowly categorized itself into learning. Kynier answered his question by showing him what he wanted to know. As he listened, he took special note of the terminology given to him. A sigil, it seemed, was what he's inscribed before as the word Dala. The sigil served little purpose, however, without something to assign it to. Next, Kynier brought up the word 'focus' and his explanation of the concept seemed adequate enough. The Reimancer was well-learned in the passage of djed and manipulating personal djed. It stood to reason in the mage's mind that manipulating djed in other ways was not only possible but rather simple to do. He listened intently to Kynier continue to elaborate and was intrigued to watch when he formed the sigil on a sheet of paper. Kynier used Farris' own assessment to further emphasize his example, teaching Farris the idea that djed could be augmented as well as manipulated. It seemed that Glyphing was an incredibly versatile discipline of magic, able to affect others and transcend their limitations without contributing anything to the study of the arcane itself.

Glyphing assists the endeavors of other magicks, a practice meant to assist and bolster.

The warning his fellow mage gave off brought a measure of laughter to the Reimancer, but he quickly cut it off. It was clear that Kynier wasn't joking and his words of caution ought to be taken seriously. He nodded once before raising his quill to a piece of parchment on his side of the desk. Kynier's pace in carving his runes was clearly faster than his own, and he attributed it to time spent. He drew the sigil as a single word, Ala.

"In the ancient tongue 'skies' or 'heavens'," he mentioned in passing. The word etched onto the surface and Farris sought to emulate what Kynier was doing. Imitation, after all, was the most effective means of learning new concepts in magic. At least, in his own experience. The mage sought to embolden the rune to act as his focus as he listened to Kynier's further explanation. The other mage was giving Farris a great deal of insight and he was glad to categorize it for later use. Clearly, what he was doing was a more advanced means of Glyphing, one that surely the Reimancer would learn in time.

"Too low? You're breaking my balls, Kynier. I can't give you one and a half. That's just way too high! Give me a break, huh? I'll be generous and give you a full gold per, just to make you happy," he'd say to the other mage. The Reimancer's quill continued to work on the sigil. He was done after ten more ticks, writing down 'Ala' several times on the sheet of paper to practice the intent of suffusing a word on paper with the capacity to store and manipulate djed.

"I'll keep that in mind. No flammable materials... Perhaps it's best for me to invoke the use of air, instead? Or, as you said, a small rift to the Other Side. What are the other two steps you mentioned? You've taught me about the focus," he reminded the other man.

He glanced at Farris’ progress at making his focus. The Reimancer was inscribing Ala onto his scroll in the making. Kynier arched an eyebrow when Farris muttered the definition to himself. What was the man intending to do? With a mental shrug Kynier went back to forming Yaq. He would pause giving his own work critical overviews. Rather than spend the time to complete it then look for mistakes, Kynier was keeping a watchful eye out as he worked. It would be his first time combining two runes into one for a greater manipulation of his own abilities. As he had expected, Farris completed his focus first. Then the man started making more duplicates of his focus. At first it was strange, then Kynier realized the man was only practicing the motions.

As Kynier neared the end of his focus, Farris the clerk spoke. Kynier didn’t have to look at the man’s expression to laugh at what he said. To hear such vulgar speech from someone who spoke so eloquently, it was unexpected and hilarious. Kynier attempted to contain his laughter but it burst forth from his tight lips with some spittle. Then he just let it happen as he leaned back and laughed. It only lasted for a chime before the muscles of his face began to tire. When it was over he let out a deep sigh of relief. “A gold per dagger sounds fine to me.” He shook his head with a smile and finished his focus.

It was then that Farris asked about what came next as well as what would work better. Kynier better clarify his earlier warning. “It doesn’t matter so much what the element is, or even the discipline you select, the eruption comes from djed with an incomplete or blocked flow. That being said, the use of air or a small gateway would be better for your first attempt. As for the next step,” Kynier reached across and took the parchment that Farris was glyphing on. The man had several versions of Ala to work with. Kynier drew a basic glyphing ribbon around one of the runes. It was an introductive Barrier that his own instructor had taught him. Simple in design that could be quickly made. Kynier was surprised by how quickly he had formed it himself. After only about twenty ticks he spun the parchment back around to return to Farris.

“The second of three steps to creating a sigil. A Barrier. The barrier serves to keep the spell contained within the scroll until its power is released.” He tapped the barrier he had quickly drawn for Farris, “this is very basic and will serve to contain small or simple spells. When you feel so bold, you will want to design your own Barrier for containing spells with larger amounts of djed. Because it is possible to put too much power in a scroll. Study the design and practice it.”

The tip of his quill pressed against the parchment as he began creating the Barrier of his own design. It was a continuous series of Randjaq linked together to form a chain around his focus. Kynier thought it was very fitting at the time of its inception, since Randjaq meant “chain” or “imprison”. He worked on trying to be more efficient in his drawing of the Barrier. While it was quite effective it tended to be time consuming. He hoped that the repetitive motion would become more intuitive with practice.

There are different faces to wear in different places.

Aster taught Farris these words long ago, but it was at the Fence that Farris truly wore a different expression. Each customer that entered required a different treatment in order to be swayed to his point of view. Barter wasn't the deepest form of conversation, but it was one that required insight into how best to communicate, particularly when coin was involved. The more coin Farris earned for Zeke the better things went for him, and the Fence proprietor was an individual that Farris very much wanted to be on the good side of. As he heard Kynier erupt into laughter at his words, he was astonished. Sure, what Farris said might have been amusing... but it wasn't really that funny, was it? He said it to customers on occasion, when they were of the mind to argue about offers he put on the table. Diffusing tension by nipping it in the bud was a basic practice for traders, one he was keen to pick up and perfect in his time in Sunberth.

Places like the Gem, the Fence, the Library... Each of them require a different Farris to utilize them to their maximum effectiveness, he mused as he waited for Kynier to compose himself. Once the mage did and accepted Farris' second offer, the Reimancer nodded and moved to produce the coin mentioned. He placed four gold mizas on the table for Kynier to take while he collected the four blades that he'd paid for. He placed them beneath the desk and above the till as he asked, "If you have anything else to look through, boss, I'm glad to help you out. Otherwise, you best get steppin'," he'd say to Kynier. His expression was somewhat neutral as he completed his iterations of the focus Ala, but it was aflame with interest as he looked over the table to see Kynier's work. In the center.

Kynier's words were met with a nod. It was intriguing to note that the discipline imbibed by the Focus had little to do with the eruption of the rune. Cautioned to avoid flammable materials, he'd drawn a connection that they might. However, he also had reason to believe that this was Kynier's first attempt at explaining magic to someone. Farris, too, seldom shared his knowledge with others, and his struggles with educating Kelski were an ever-present reminder to the difficulty of understanding such concepts immediately. It seemed that world magicks needed a more patient approach to them and Farris let a breath escape his lungs. He raised his journal to the desk and opened it as he spoke again.

"Or, if you have purchases you want to make? Information you're interested in sellin'? Zeke likes to know what's going on," he advised Kynier once the mage offered him an opportunity to speak. The Reimancer raised his pen to parchment and began to inscribe the sigil of the focus he truly wished to use. As he created the sigil, his gaze did not waver from parchment. Adamant in getting his efforts right, he kept his wrist to the table with his right hand, his left continuing its passage along parchment. Overgiving made itself an enemy to the Reimancer this Summer, but he was adamant in his convictions to rise above it. When the sigil was complete, he read it aloud, satisfied with his decision for the Focus.

"Irst, the 'veil'," he began. Following his inscription of veil, he took note of the word that Kynier used to loop around his focus. "Randaq is often used literally in texts I've seen. Perhaps... 'Daeq'. A barrier, after all, is made to define the boundaries a subject can cross,'" he said. Rather than loop the sigil over and over, Farris inscribed it just once. The word was followed by lines that formed a circle around the shape in full. Kynier left the impression that runes were formed to the practitioner's taste, and he did not trust his abilities with a quill to the extent to inscribe the word so many times in a chain.

The mage wondered if this was a completed scroll at this point, but allowed Kynier to explain the concepts at his pace.

[The Fence] Making an Exchange

Once they had come to an agreement Farris procured the amount of mizzas they spoke of. Graciously, Kynier accepted the coins and added them to his own collection in his pocket. The reimancer’s vernacular was quite peculiar to hear from his lips. It sounded so crude and commonplace compared to what the man was. In conjunction with what had been the source of Kynier’s merriment, he understood that it was just another part of the ruse. Kynier was fortunate that his employment only required interactions with people that he could plan for. Farris was required to be out in the open and engage in conversation with whoever it was that came through the door. Farris was speaking from a script that he had to learn for the sake of his own well-being.

The Mighty Quill scratched away at the parchment, leaving a trail of ink behind that gradually circled back on itself. When Farris uttered the next line of the script Kynier paused but didn’t look up. He couldn’t judge if Farris was asking seriously about whether Kynier had information for sale. Slowly he looked up to look in the other mage’s gray eyes. The man was serious. Kynier sat up a bit straighter as he considered the man’s words. This was an opportunity to learn one of the more clandestine functions of the city. To plant a seed in Farris that could prove useful to him in the future. “At this time I don’t have an interest in purchasing goods. Partially because I don’t know what is available.”

As for the second half of Farris’ offer, Kynier remained silent and returned to finish his Randjaq. Information was valuable and the city was saturated in it. The challenge was finding the secrets in the melting pot. Often Kynier did just as this store owner, Zeke, would do. Pay out scraps for information that he deemed valuable. The difference was that Kynier was a Nightstalker. He was not an information broker who was always ready to sell knowledge to others. Secrets were to be kept. And when the need arose they were to be used, not sold. Kynier had been recently enlightened about that. It made him question the professional relationship he had with his employer. Doler paid him to go out, gather information, and come back to report. He wondered if Akajia took offense to his means of living. The gnosis between his shoulder blades had remained, and shadows like Povair continued to speak to him. So the goddess at the very least was content about it.

To his surprise, the reimancer began to draw a different focus. Kynier watched as the beginnings of Irst were laid to paper. What did the man intend to do? That was the beauty of glyphing. It was able to be very specific yet so vague at the same time. Bourin would sometimes form a sigil and infuse it with magic, then leave it for Kynier to inspect but forbade the use of auristics. As a boy he would spend bells contemplating the possible uses of the sigil, and Bourin would expect an answer on his return. Kynier did not intend to do that to Farris. At least, not yet. The gray eyed mage had a strong understanding of Nader-canoch that surpassed his own. While Farris created a fresh sigil from scratch, Kynier was able to finish his Barrier.

The chain of chains connected with itself with a final stroke of his quill. The circle was an impressive sight in his opinion as it rested around the most complex rune he had ever attempted. It may have been a bit foolish to attempt this outside the confines of his home, but it was too late to stop now. For a chime Kynier examined the strokes he had made on the parchment, looking for any imperfections. When he was satisfied he set it back down and proceeded to draw a custom rune in the upper corner of the scroll. It bore no strong resemblance to any word in the ancient tongue. It was a phrase designation for activation when the time was right.

When the Trigger was complete a moment later Kynier set down his quill. His eyes scanned the new drawing that Farris had made. Irst rested inside of Daeq. Kynier tapped a finger on his upper lip for a moment as he thought it over. When he was done, he shared his thoughts. “Your Barrier,” he said tapping Daeq, “may be too gentle and allow the spell to slip free. I do not know this to be a certainty as I have never tried it, nor have heard of it being used in this way. I’m not going to discourage it until we see how well it fairs.” Then he tapped the third piece of his own sigil and tilted the parchment for Farris to see.

“The third and final piece of a sigil is the Trigger. The Trigger establishes the condition that will activate the stored power. Most commonly it is a word or phrase that you will associate to the activation. Obviously you don’t want it to be anything someone is likely to say in casual conversation, lest your pants light on fire. The formation of the Trigger is completely customizable.” Kynier laid the parchment back down on the table and set both his hands on either side of Sultayaq. Kynier took a deep breath and closed his eyes until they were small slits.

“The next phase,” he said very softly, “is to imbue it.” Kynier took several relaxing breaths as he reached a state of tranquility. At that point he conjured the emanations of his soul core with his will. Djed answered his summons and slowly climbed its way to his hands. Violently he could’ve summoned it, but found it less straining to let it out like a yawn. Slow and naturally rather than try and force it. Mentally he wove a spell for voiding and set his power to it. Visibly his hands pressed down on the parchment as Kynier directed the power to be absorbed into the ink. Djed did not take the form of res but transferred itself from one host to the next. Sultayaq began to shift as the lines folded over themselves. Like a hypnotist’s illusion the flat drawing took a three dimensional quality on the parchment as lines remained unbroken and shifted under the influence of his soul. A bead of sweat ran from his temple and down his jaw line as djed filled his body with warmth on a warm day. Kynier had designed his barrier specifically for the dangers of this discipline and was testing the limits. After a chime and a half from when he started, the Randaq Barrier pulsed red. At the sight of it Kynier immediately stopped and stood up from his seat, leaving a hand still in contact with the scroll.

The barrier’s pulsation was short lived and settled back to appear as normal writing. Sultayaq continued to move which gave Kynier alarm. His hand pinched the corner of the parchment in preparation to fling it away from the table should it happen to him yet again. Kynier felt drenched with sweat though he didn’t realize it was blood running down his jaw and not sweat. Holding his breath he swallowed a coppery taste in his mouth. Twenty ticks later the focus began to slow and settled itself on the parchment. When it came to a complete stop Kynier exhaled heavily in relief.

At the end of his exhale he choked and coughed. A liquid mass clung to the back of his throat and refused to be dislodged. Kynier turned away and walked to the center of the room and coughed on the back of his hand. Hacking harder to clear his throat. At last, what had plagued him shot forth from his mouth to cover the back of his hand. A large glob of blood. Kynier swallowed hard and breathed harder. His other hand brushed the trail of blood coming down his jaw to smear on his fingers. Micro fissures. Kynier had overgiven and still the barrier held. Bloodstained teeth formed a smile as he chuckled in self-accomplishment. At the end of the chuckle he gave another hard cough to clear more blood from his throat.

Kynier turned and looked at Farris as he wiped the blood from his lips. “My scroll is complete.” He stepped over and retook his seat. “To imbue the scroll with power you must form the spell but not yet bring it to complete fruition. Hold it at that cusp and will it to the Focus. Should your Barrier pulse brighter than mine had it will indicate failure to contain the spell, unless you cease fueling djed immediately.” Kynier rolled up his scroll and held it at his side. Should Farris’ scroll misfire or self-activate, he didn’t want it to cause his to go off and kill them both.
