Birds of a Feather (Sophia)

20th of Summer, 518 AV

Nieve lay sprawled in the sand by the ocean, soaking up the early morning sunshine; it was the perfect time to do so, before it got too hot and the sand became blistering, though she was adjusting to that. She stretched out her paws and wings, a small purr leaving her as she settled back down.

Suddenly, a sound caught her ear. The flapping wings of a bird circling overhead caught Nieve's attention, and her ears flicked, angling upwards. The sound drew closer, and the quiet thump of the creature landing on the sand sounded not too far from her.

Nieve opened one slitted eye lazily, peering at a small grey and white bird less than a dozen feet away from her, hopping along in the sand. What a silly bird, Nieve thought with amusement as it looked her way. Well, she supposed there was no point in passing up a free meal.

Rolling slowly back onto her stomach, both her eyes open now, Nieve peered at the small bird, who seemed not to notice her movements. She settled her paws beneath her, crouching low in the sand as the bird hopped slightly closer.

She waited, tensed, for a long moment, and then sprang forward with a yowl. The bird chirped in surprise, wings flapping, and took off in a flurry of feathers before Evie could pounce on it. A low meow of frustration left Nieve, and she leaped up onto her back paws, batting at the air, but the bird was too high.

Nieve meowed loudly as the bird circled above, almost taunting her, not seeming to realize she had wings of her own. Unfurling them, Nieve pounced into the air, and the bird suddenly zipped off.

Now in it more for the fun than the possibility of a meal, Nieve flapped her wings hard and flew after it. She didn't usually bother hunting birds in the air; it was a lot of effort, usually for very little pay-off, and they maneuvered much better than she did.

The bird suddenly dipped low, and dove towards the ground. Nieve followed suit; the bird pulled up, but she allowed herself to hit the sand with all four paws, for the bird was aiming for a person.

Nieve sat in the sand, tipping her head as she stared up at a blonde woman a few feet from her, whose shoulder now held the tiny grey and white bird. She meowed, folding her wings in along her flank, green eyes darting back and forth between the bird and the woman.

A moment later, in a swirl of lights, Evie stood on the sand on two feet, brown skin bare and her curls windswept. "Is that your bird?" She asked, motioning towards it with her chin, forgoing introductions for the moment.

She felt a bit bad knowing that she'd almost eaten somebody's pet, if that was indeed the case. There was another woman on the island with birds, a big blue parrot in particular, but Nieve had seen them together when they first met, so she knew not to hunt the parrot. It was a bit big for her, anyway, and she didn't particularly fancy getting near its beak.

Dragging her attention back to the current situation, Evie realized she'd never met the woman before, or even seen her in passing. "Are you new to Syka?" The question prompted her to recall her manners, and she flashed a grin. "I'm Nieve. Who're you?"

Sophia had spent the morning experimenting with a slightly different way to eat the oranges that grew on a couple of the trees near her tent. Up until now she had just eaten them as they came, picked straight from the branch, peeled and into her mouth. Oranges were, she thought, her absolute favourite fruit although papaya was currently a close second.

She had made another small fire early in the morning, having awoken with the sunrise. Despite it being the middle of the summer season, there was a slight chill to the air this early in the day. She had coaxed her fire from the previous evening back to life by adding fresh tinder, and then gently blowing on the sparks from her flint and steel till the flames took up again. She had then scoured her beach for two fairly large rocks that could allow her to rest a cooking dish over the top of the flames.

She had acquired a little rosemary from the communal kitchens and had sprinkled this over six halves of the freshly peeled oranges she had gathered upon waking. These then went into the dish, and she sat back in the sand, resting on her elbows as she waited for them to heat up.

Sophia scanned the sky for her Tavan. Pearl had been either restless or hungry this morning, as almost as soon as the Svefra was awake the bird had flown off into the golden-hued skies. The sun had since risen and now a sheet of beautiful clear blue stretched overhead. There were a few birds circling fairly high up, but all much too large to be the diminutive form of Pearl.

She sat up and prodded at the oranges to see if they had finished. Not quite to her satisfaction, Sophia stood and stretched out her limbs. A brightly coloured parrot caught her eye and she turned to watch it. Distracted as she was, Sophia didn't register the return of Pearl until the seabirds wings were practicality batting her hair.

She looked round just as Pearl settled onto her shoulder. It was a little odd, as the prion usually preferred to hop around her feet and generally be in the way. A much larger form dropped into her eye-line and as she took in four limbs, two wings and a small feline face, Sophia understood why the bird was acting how she was.

Sophia had seen many yowlings during her time in Riverfall, and this one was no different. It was a very pretty tortoiseshell with large green eyes. Sophia tilted her head, pondering for a moment why someone would bring such an animal here.

She blinked as lights popped into existence around the little feline and immediately understood. Sophia of course knew about Kelvic - enough of them lived among the Svefra at any one time for her to have even been friends with a few. The woman had beautiful curled hair and eyes that hinted at her other self. She nodded.
"Ah, yes. This is Pearl. Was she bothering you?" The seabird seemed to have a knack for always being in the way. Sophia was absolutely sure the cheeky little prion did it on purpose.

Sophia beamed as the girl introduced herself, not at all perturbed by her fellows state of undress. "I am indeed! I only got here on the 12th. I'm Sophia." There was a pause in which she remembered breakfast.
"Oh, I was just making something to eat, do you like oranges?" Sophia gestured to the cooking dish behind her.

She shooed Pearl off her shoulder, the little bird flapping down into the sand to run around the feet of the two girls. Sophia settled herself in the sand, motioning for the other to join her. "If you want feel free to grab a top or something from my tent." She would then offer up some of the orange halves to Nieve. "How long have you been here?"

Nieve grinned at the woman, relieved that she wasn't being chastised. "Not at all. If anything I think I was probably bothering her...so, sorry about that." Her green gaze flickered over to where the bird still rested on the blonde woman's shoulder; Pearl would have been a tasty snack, but she would have felt awful, so she was glad the bird had gotten away.

The woman introduced herself, Sophia, and confirmed Nieve's suspicions that she was new to the settlement. She hadn't even been there ten days yet! "Isn't it lovely here?" The Kelvic asked with a smile, glad to see that more and more people were coming to Syka.

She may have still been relatively new to the settlement, but it already felt like home. Watching it grow and expand made Nieve unbelievably happy, especially when the new residents were interesting or kind. Sophia was at least the latter, as she smiled and offered Nieve one of her shirts, and the Kelvic was determined to figure out if she was the former as well.

"That's alright," Nieve declined her offer of the shirt. "I prefer to not wear anything, especially in the heat. Unless you're uncomfortable." Sophia hadn't batted an eye at her naked form, but Nieve knew that didn't necessarily mean she wanted the Kelvic to continue to hang around without any clothes on. "I know you humans can sometimes be a bit...stuffy, when it comes to nudity." Was that the right word? Regardless, she didn't mean it as an insult, simply a fact she had become familiar with throughout the course of her life.

If Sophia expressed discomfort, she would duck into the woman's tent she had been given permission, and throw on the first shirt she could find. Otherwise, she would continue to talk with the woman in her bare skin.

The offer of food, however, sounded delightful. "If you don't mind, I'd love that. Oranges are great, though I think mangoes are my favourite." She glanced to the fire where the oranges were, scenting the air curiously.

"Do you cook much? I'd never have thought of cooking fruit before coming here, but Stu does it down at the Tidepool Bar, and it's always so delicious." It smelled as if Sophia had put some kind of spice on the oranges as well, and it was making Nieve's stomach rumble.

Nieve gladly joined Sophia, dropping down into a cross-legged position near her in the sand. With a smile and a thanks, she plucked one of the orange halves, then regretted it immediately. The fruit was still hot, burning the tips of her fingers. Nieve made a face, letting out a tiny 'hah' sound as she blew on the orange, moving it from hand to hand until it cooled down enough for her to pop a slice in her mouth.

The fruit was still hot, though her game of hot potato had allowed it to cool so that it wasn't uncomfortable; the sweet but tangy juice was accompanied by a fragrant spice Nieve didn't know the name of, but the combination was delicious.

"I've been in Syka for a few seasons now," She answered Sophia's question after swallowing the bite of orange. "I arrived in the winter, and it's been my home ever since. I can't imagine ever living anywhere else again," She admitted. "What city did you come from?"

Nieve popped another piece of orange into her mouth, pausing to add, "This is really good, by the way, thank you. What spice did you use?"

Sophia laughed. "Oh I am sure she probably deserved it, if there was an award for being in the way all the time she would win it!" Her laugh turned into a bright smile and she gazed out to the ocean for a brief moment. "It is." It was clear to see the dark-haired young woman's excitement for the settlement and it was infectious. "I can't wait to fully explore what's here. It seems like the perfect place for the sort if life I want."

As the pair moved over to the fire she grinned again and gave Nieve a light one-shouldered shrug. "Oh it doesn't bother me at all. I'm half Svefra." If she hadn't noticed before, the Kelvic might now see just how bright a blue Sophia's eyes were. They crinkled around the edges from the smile that still stretched over her mouth. "It's normal for us, I just like to wear something bright because it makes me happy." The knee-length lemon yellow top she had chosen today was no exception. "You're right though, people generally don't know what to make of it."

After she was settled before the fire, she nudged the dish off the core of the heat in the hope it would start to cool. She glanced over at the other woman as she sat down next to her. "Oh I haven't been there yet. Is that the place out over the water? It's looks fantastic. I don't really cook, I had family members who were great at it so they always did it. I am trying to learn though!" Nieve was clearly hungry and before Sophia could warn her, the Kelvic had scooped a piece of orange from the hot dish. She watched for a moment, concern in her eyes but a small smile twitching at the corner of her mouth.

She nodded at the woman's response. "Oh you must have been here before a few of us then? What do you do for work?" Sophia was curious to know what other sort of jobs were about here. She imagined that they might all have to be fairly specialised. Confident that the oranges had cooled a little now, she plucked one from the dish and bought it to her mouth. It was as delicious as she had hoped.

"Mm." She licked some juice from her lower lip. "I came over from Riverfall, but I was only there for a short while. I lived on a ship my whole life." She flicked her eyes back over to the ocean. "That's why I like it here... I have all the plants and unknown things waiting to be discovered, but I can also live by the sea so that way I don't miss my family too much. I know they're out there on the waves." She smiled wistfully for a moment before taking another bite of the fruit. "Oh, I used rosemary. It's growing up in the kitchens." She peered at the Kelvic woman again. "Where did you come over from?"

Another smile, Sophia liked Nieve. "Thank you! You said you prefer mango?" There was a small pause while she thought. "Would you like to help me find one? I've never tried it before. Maybe we could try and cook it? Or you can show me the Tidepool bar if you want something more substantial to eat?" Whatever Nieve chose to do, Sophia would gather up the remaining slices of orange and offer half of them to the Kelvic before following her wherever she chose to go.

I hope there's enough here for you! I've never done a proper social thread before. Tried to move them along a bit, feel free to send them off wherever you like! (:
