5th of Fall, 518 A.V.
Kynier made his way to the desk in the studio and sat down with a pleased groan. It was good to finally be off his feet after an entire day of chasing around couriers again. While he did not know if Doler employed other spies that Kynier just happened to miss running into, he did think that he had proven his abilities to be beyond that of following the parcel deliverers. And while sometimes he was appreciative of getting an easier task, they tended to be rather dull. Though the more interesting tasks tended to have more life risking endeavors, he was at least able to learn something about the dynamic of those in the city. No matter how small it was. Kynier rubbed his brow with a sigh.
He knew he should do something to improve his skills since he was home sooner than expected. All of his physical skills were out of the question. For he was too tired to do any running, strength training, endurance building, or acrobatic improvements. Kynier bent over in his chair to pull out one of his journals he had started. His selection was blind because he could not make a conscious decision about which magic discipline he would want to expand on. There was the project in the basement that he could continue, but the progress was slow and today he did not feel in the mood to work on it. If he pulled out his Observations of the Elements, then he would work on the project.
That wasn’t the journal that he had blindly pulled from the drawer. In his hand was From the Other Side. A blank journal that he had for when he got back around to practicing his Voiding. Kynier shrugged and supposed that now was as good of a time as any to get back to it. The Mighty Quill was taken out of the hidden pocket that it usually dwelled in within his dark green vest. Then he rummaged through the next drawer for some ink. Once he popped the top off the vial he paused to look at his magic quill. Then he looked at it more intently and realized something. While he knew it was magical, he never had learned the fullest extent of its powers.
Rotating the quill around so that he could see the small glyph that was etched towards the quill’s tip, Kynier reconsidered his objective for the night. In the last year, his use of Auristics had improved by a lot. It was less draining and conveyed more information. While he had only attempted to discover the secrets of a few magic items, only one had been successful. Kynier held the quill up before him with both hands grasping an end. With a breath he brought forth his Djed to empower his Sight. The Mighty Quill’s aura cackled with energy and did not simply emanate from the item. It swirled consistently like the Mighty Quill was the center of a vortex.
As Kynier applied his focus on the item, he felt an energy crawl over his skin just like the last time he had perceived it with Auristics. More in his mind than in his ears he heard the whistling of strong winds. The small glyph at the Mighty Quill’s tip acquired a golden glow as he focused more on its energy. Understanding was revealed to him. That the quill was capable of writing on anything. Even unnatural mediums like rocks, wood, and bones. All it needed was something to write with, be it ink or blood.
And there was more. Kynier began to feel the presence of a storm within himself. The rumbling of thunder in his chest, a crack of lightning to make his heart jump, and the bitter cold of a rainstorm. Through it he saw an enlarged image of the glyph on the quill’s tip. It was not made of gold, ink, or even blood, but of a current of lightning that was cackling endlessly in his Sight. The storm made rune grew in size and encompassed his body, filling him with a sense of protection. And he understood. Kynier closed his eyes and ceased the flow of Djed to also close his sight. The rumble left his chest and the bitter cold left his skin. Kynier opened his eyes and stared at the Mighty Quill in a new light.
“Thank you, Akajia, for bestowing to me this gift. One that I was unable to fully appreciate before.”
