40th of Spring, 519AV

A loud sigh of relief filled the air of the Syka Commons as Kamilla watched her most recent customer walk away with his newly repaired clothing, leaving her free to do her own thing, finally. She felt that she’d done enough work for the day, deciding that she was done and retrieving a blank page from her bag along with one of her charcoal sticks, ready to start drawing something she’d been imagining for the past few days.

Having had enough of lugging her sewing kit and heavy unwieldy bolts of material from place to place for work reasons, Kamilla had been slowly formulating a solution to her problem and was finally ready to start making it a reality. The plan in mind would require many steps, the first being to draw out her idea.

She’d start with a few straight lines, eventually forming a box, simple enough, even for someone with her drawing skills. The box in question would serve as the ‘container’ portion of her creation, a cart that would make moving her supplies along Syka’s cobbled road a lot easier. Next, four wheels, drawn side by side to illustrate the amount needed, though she wasn’t entirely sure whether she wanted three or four. Three would be cheaper, but four would be more stable, she assumed. With that, she’d already made her decision. Four wheels it was.

Completely focused on her drawing, Kamilla was dead to the world around her, the other inhabitants of the commons going completely unnoticed by the female mage as they laughed and ate, enjoying the tropical paradise that was Syka. It was only a bell or two past noon, the sun still bright in the sky, providing Syka with its unbearable heat, but even that was placed at the back of the mage’s mind in favor of her current quest.

While drawing the box and wheels of the cart had been no effort at all, the next part would take a bit more than a few flicks of the wrist to illustrate. Kamilla had spent an entire day pondering exactly how her creation would be able to turn in either direction. Regular carts, wagons and wheelbarrows were either pushed or pulled in a direction by an external force, while her creation would be entirely moved by itself, which posed an obvious problem. Fortunately, the mage had eventually arrived at a solution, one that had been buried in her memories of her past in Zeltiva.

Recalling her short stint as an apprentice at the toy factory, Bohrnn and Goldwoerth’s, Kamilla was happy to finally have use for the knowledge she’d acquired there. She’d learned about several simple mechanisms used in gadgeteering and the one she currently had in mind was the ‘wheel and axle’. Although Bohrnn and Goldwoerth’s specialised I’m creating children’s toys, the principles were put to use in all manner of contraptions.

Honestly, Kamilla had been creating the cart in her mind since the day she’d had to lug her bolt of fabric to one of the bungalows to make the botanist, Uta, a dress. The bolts were large and heavy, awkward to move, especially while her leg was still healing from the baboon attack and it had only taken one chime for her to decide that she needed to do something about it.

Sitting back in her seat for a moment and searching the horizon, as if it would hold the answers she was looking for, Kamilla did her best to dive back into her memories of Zeltiva in an attempt to remember the exact turning mechanism used by the Borhnn and Goldwoerth toys. If she recalled correctly, the toy carts had a very simple design, though drawing it accurately would be more difficult.

Shifting forwards in her seat, Kamilla began drawing what would be the underside of her cart, drawing a plank that would run along the length of the cart, with another plank at the front end, creating a ‘T’ shape. The wheels would be located on either end of the second plank which would be attached to the longer one in such a way that it allowed the horizontal plank to turn and swivel. Kamilla specifically remembered seeing this mechanism used on a small children’s wagon.

If she was being entirely honest, her idea wasn’t the most original one the mage had ever had, not by a long shot. In fact, she very clearly recalled the animated wagons that transported supplies from the docks to the research facilities on Sahova. She supposed her little cart would be an inferior rendition of those, but it didn’t really bother her. The only goal was to save herself the trouble of lugging her work supplies around, though she was aware that she’d only be able to make use of it along the cobbled path.

Thinking back on Sahova and it’s golems, the wagons were probably the least impressive of the several types she’d seen during her time there. She’d seen little golems that guided mages around the citadel, larger ones that answered queries and several more that she’d, sadly, never had the chance of investigating.

Pulling herself out of her memories, Kamilla gave the drawing a quick look over. It was plain and unimpressive, but it was also good enough to paint a picture of what she wanted and would hopefully make it easier to explain what she wanted to the carpenter while making her request.

Satisfied with her attempt at a blueprint, Kamilla packed her sewing kit into her bag before rolling up the page she’d just drawn her idea on and getting to her feet. A stinging pain shot through her thigh, a few tiny specks of crimson appearing on the bandage. Great. The wound had been healing quite well, but she had a tendency to forget she wasn’t in perfect health from time time. This time, she must have gotten up too fast and opened the wound.

A sigh escaped the mage’s lips as she wearily watched the blood stains grow, sighing a second time when it seemed they wouldn’t grow any larger than a finger nail. ”Excellent. I’m going to have to head to The Panacea later to get it checked on and changed. I need to start being more careful.” She was clearly more annoyed with herself for creating the inconvenience than she was concerned or in pain.

Sliding the rolled up page into her bag alongside the rest of her possessions, Kamilla headed down the stairs and away from the, mostly empty, commons and towards the communal kitchen. She needed to find out who she could commission to create her cart and where to find him... or her. There was no doubt that Syka had a woodworker, all its buildings were comprised of the substance after all. She wondered if she would just be directed back to the founder Randal, he’d built the beautiful bungalows after all, it was possible he was the person she was looking for.

The walk from the commons to the communal kitchen was short but still unpleasant, the uneven terrain of the sand making movement difficult for Kamilla, who was now being extra careful not to worsen the wound.

She knew she’d find someone there when she was met with the wafting scent of meat on a fire, arriving to see that she was correct, a familiar woman busy in the kitchen. She’d seen the woman before, on the day she’d arrived in Syka. Hello...” Kamilla’s voice pulled the woman’s attention from the chopping board, a friendly smile turning to one of slight concern as the woman observed the fading bruises and bandage with flecks of red.

”Oh dear, are you okay?... Kamilla right? Can I help you with something?”

The woman, Nesra’s, concern caught Kamilla by surprise, after all the two of them had only met once and quite briefly too, yet here the potter was acting as if they were close friends. It was beginning to seem like a running theme in Syka, the population seeking closely knit, which was very unusual to someone who had only lived in large cities.

”Don’t worry Nesra, I’m just fine, thank you.” Kamilla began, not enjoying being doted on for what were clearly reminders of her weaknesses. Arms crossed over her chest as the mage leaned into her hip, opening her mouth to ask the woman for the location of any woodworkers in Syka, but quickly getting cut off by the smaller woman.

”Oh, thank goodness. Mind if I ask what happened?”

Yes, yes I do mind.

A weak smile appeared on the mage’s face, using her novice acting skills to try and hide her disdain at having to answer a question she’d been asked a dozen times. ”Not at all... I ran into a troupe Wanolo Baboons is all.” She finished of with a nonchalant shrug, wanting to diminish the topic at hand, in favor of her own goals.

”Oh dear, I knew they were troublesome little creatures, but I’ve never heard of anything like this happening.”

Kamilla shrugged again, ”I guess I just got unlucky... Anyway, I wanted to ask if you know where I can go to get something made out of wood?” Her patience worn thin, Kamilla did not want to give the woman any openings to further indulge her curiosity about the baboon incident, getting straight to the point.

”O-Oh, yes of course dear. Just head on up that way until you reach a clearing. When you see the sawmill you’ve reached your spot. Lars is usually outside, either working or tending to his Ashta.”

Not wanting to delay her quest for the cart any longer with pointless chit chat, Kamilla simply nodded and smiled gratefully, already turning in the direction she’d been pointed in. ”Thank you Nesra. Enjoy your day.” Kamilla could just tell that the potter had more questions to ask her, but just didn’t care to stick around and answer them.

Heading in as straight a line as possible, in the direction she’d been pointed, Kamilla realised that she may have been a bit too eager to leave. She’d gotten the main information needed, but hadn’t given herself enough time to ask the smaller questions that floated around her mind, her curiosity about them growing slowly but surely.

”What is an Ashta?” The question was of course, rhetorical, but that didn’t mean Kamilla didn’t want an answer. She’d never heard the word before, so naturally, she was curious. She also wondered what this woodworker, Lars, was like. Syka was such a small settlement, yet Kamilla couldn’t help but feel that she hadn’t met even half of its inhabitants.

Making her way across the sand with an injured leg was fast becoming an annoyance to the mage who, under normal circumstances, would stick to the cobbled road, except she didn’t feel like taking the longer routes today. Unfortunately, it was that particular decision, paired with her eagerness to get her job done without taking a break in between, that was putting more strain than was necessary on the mage’s injury.

After walking for several more steps, Kamilla felt another sharp stinging pain shoot through her leg, this time looking down to see that the spots of blood seeping through her bandage were beginning to grow again. A loud sigh. ”Just great.” The words were uttered in frustration as the mage looked around for the nearest place to rest, the telltale sound of a nearby waterfall reminding her that the Syka communal pools were nearby. She would head there for the time being and give her leg a rest.

Making her way there as slowly and as gently as was humanly possible, Kamilla finally sat down on one of the dry stone slabs beside the smaller pool, a loud huff escaping her lips. It was honestly terrible, being injured, not being able to do the things she needed to do without her leg being an obstacle. Regardless, she was grateful to see that while the blood stains of the bandage had grown a bit, it seemed that would be as big as they would get, at least for the time being.

Taking a load off of her leg only made the difference in sensation between the injured and uninjured limb that much more obvious. No longer standing on them, Kamilla could feel the ache and cramps, it seemed that longer distances were absolutely out of the question until she’d fully recovered. She remembered the healer Jansen saying something about it, but had foolishly assumed it more of a suggestion then strict instruction.

Although it was not ideal to be forced to take a break, there really was no alternative. Risking prolonged injury was far lower on her list of priorities than being a few chimes later than she’d like to creating something she had no urgency for. A sigh escaped the mage’s lips she settled into her short rest, eyes examining the communal pools more closely now that she had nothing else to do.

She’d been to the pools once before, stumbled upon them fresh off the boat and in search of one of the founders. Back then she hadn’t given them much thought or attention, but now that she looked at them, they were quite interesting. In fact, it took Kamilla only one proper glance to realise that they could only have been made by one thing, Reimancy. The discovery increased her interest in the location tenfold as she looked over it with eyes full of wonder.

Over her years as a reimancer, Kamilla had seen several structures created by the magic, geomancy in particular. On Sahova she’d seen buildings, sculptures and weapons made with the element, the latter being one of her own uses as well, but somehow the pools were different. The stone was smooth, beautiful, she could tell that whoever had created it had put a lot of attention and effort into his or her work.

Looking over the location itself with a new respect for her own element, Kamilla couldn’t help but feel as if she was not doing herself and Reimancy justice by using it in the simple and uncreative ways she did. ”What a beautiful magical expression...” The words seemed to fall from her lips without thought as Kamilla tried to imagine exactly how the mage who’d created the pools had done it. She felt somewhat humbled, a small smile playing at her features.

Eyes lingering on the smooth reflective surface of the wetter stone, while enjoying the soothing noise of the waterfall, Kamilla’s eyes widened as she was given an idea, palm already turning upwards as she reached within, prodding and pulling at the well of energy that lingered just beneath the surface and willing it to begin pouring out in small amounts.

A faint smile appeared on the mage’s face as she watched the glistening lavender fluid drift upward from her palm, flecks gathering together to form a small stone sized ball.

While her cart idea had yet to take physical form, beyond a rough drawing, Kamilla had already been certain of all its components, except for one. She had the blueprint, she knew where she’d get it built and she was confident in her own ability to animate the finished product. The only thing that had been missing was the reflective surface with which her creation would perceive the world, but seeing the pools created by Reimancy had given her the idea of creating her own.

As the last of the flecks of glistening lavender res merged with the small stone sized ball, Kamilla was reminded of how much she’d grown as a reimancer since her initiation almost a decade ago. She remembered that when she’d been starting out, producing res was akin to getting water from a rock, it involved a lot of banging against an imaginary barrier in order to create a crack to pull the energy from. A small laugh escaped the mage, she’d been such a fool back then

A few years later, Kamilla had grown somewhat and accessing her magic had become less of a hassle. Instead of forcing an effect through sheer effort, she’d begun to accept that the energy, djed, was a force within her that simply needed coaxing in order to do her will. Looking back from where she was now, even that had been a foolish assumption.

Now, nearly a decade later, Kamilla’s philosophy of djed, Reimancy and magic in general had completely shifted. She no longer saw it as a force to be used as she wished, instead she recognised the energy as a natural part of herself, one she was lucky enough to be familiar with. Instead of using magic to create a change in the world that she wanted, she was using a part of herself, no different to walking or running yet unique as it was only hers.

With these thoughts and her own growth in mind, Kamilla began to focus on the small ball of res willing it’s form to smoothen out, shaping it into more of an oblong shape than regular sphere and then she transmuted it. The newly created earth clattering against the reimantic stone floor of the community pools.

Reaching down to retrieve the stone and bringing it closer to eyes for inspection, Kamilla noticed that while she’d been successful in create the smooth shape, the stone itself was dull and lacked a reflection of any sort, appearing as regular greyish rock. A sigh. It seemed that there was a lot more to geomancy than shape, the type of stone being her new focus.

New goal in sight, Kamilla reached within herself once again, taking a deep breath and this time gathering her djed in her lungs before exhaling a thick cloud of glistening lavender res. The ease with the magical substance was produced, once again served as a testament to how much she’d progressed since her initiation. The corners of her mouth turned slightly upward as she watched the beautiful substance twist and gather, conforming to her will.

Once again the glistening res gathered into the size of a small stone, smoothing into the desired shape even quicker than her first attempt and soon enough it was ready to be transmuted. ”Okay...” She began, now contemplating how to create the desired effect.

Brown eyes glanced over the community pools in search of inspiration, finally settling on the smooth reflective darkened stone that gave the location its appeal. She would attempt to recreate that particular stone, eyes closing to focus on visualising the desired effect. Dark, brown, smooth and solid with a glossy finish. That was the image the mage held in her mind before transmuting the red into what would hopefully be a stone resembling that around her.

clack

Reaching down to find abs retrieve the newly transmuted stone, Kamilla was surprised to see a hand, notably larger than her own, already lifting the stone between its fingers, her own eyes moving upward in search of the stealthy person’s face.

”Trying to recreate my work? How flattering.”

Normally, Kamilla’s reaction to being caught doing magic would be to panic, which she did for a brief moment, until the stranger’s words registered within her mind, gaze finally reaching the man’s face. As expected, the man’s appearance was unfamiliar, but quite handsome, tanned skin everywhere she looked and bright sea blue eyes that seemed to look right through her.

Still recovering from the shock of being pounded upon by the man’s presence, Kamilla let out a sigh, calming herself before finally responding. ”So, you’re responsible for the creation of these pools? They’re quite impressive.” Although slightly shaken, her voice maintained its confident tone.

”Indeed I did, thank you for the compliment... it took me quite some time to decide on which kind of stone to use... but this particular stone sounded the most comfortable here... It seems...”

Choosing to ignore his comment about the stone sounding comfortable, whatever that meant, Kamilla watched as the man lifted her own attempt at recreating the stone to his ear, fingers sliding over and around the newly transmuted earth. A brow furrowed in confusion but she managed to stop herself from speaking.

”... that you’ve done a good job with your attempt, your stone is similar enough but it lacks spirit. You were too focused on its appearance and not enough on its substance.”

As he spoke, the man handed the stone over to the confused Kamilla to inspect for herself, albeit skeptical now that the strange reimancer had critiqued it. ”What do you mean?” To her the stone looked almost identical to that which surrounded them. She simply couldn’t understand what the man was trying to say.

”May I?” The man began, Kamilla noticing how he never really looked at her, but only in her direction... His hand reaching out to receiving her stone once again. ”See, isn’t just some dead chunk of earth, uniform throughout, each type is different, having its own impurities and flaws, much like us... this is what gives it its personality... it’s spirit.”

His words weren’t making much sense to her, even after his explanation. He wanted her to make the stone flawed? How? And why? It still served the desired purpose on the outside.

Choosing not to speak her opinions out loud, Kamilla watched as the man held her stone between his left thumb and index finger, opening his right hand to reveal an almost identical stone that had seemingly come from nowhere before holding it in an identical fashion, though she assumed he’d created it on the spot.

The pads on the man’s thumbs began to glow a pale blue, resembling the waters that surrounded Syka, clearly coated in a small amount of res, which he then brushed across the stones in either hand, half their surfaces dissolving into droplets of water before he offered both stones for her to inspect.

Going on the speed at which he produced his res alone, Kamilla could already tell that the handsome stranger was a talented reimancer.

Taking both stones from the man, her own in her right hand while his rested in her left, Kamilla curiously investigated them for difference, their internal make up now visible after being dissected in half. Although she’d only been attempting to make stone with a fairly reflective surface, the man’s words had drawn her curiosity and interest.

Holding both stones up to her face, the difference was instantly visible. In comparison to the stone, her stone, in her right hand, the one in her left was made up of many layers, rings of lightening colors visible on the inside, while her own was a dull uniform dark brown that not only looked, but felt unnatural too.

”While your control over your res is impressive, you fail to see your elements for what they are beyond their appearance.”

Although she didn’t fully understand what the man was saying, Kamilla could certainly see what he was trying to hint at, the evidence clear as day as she held it between her hands. ”Could you teach me?” She asked, voice filled with hope and eyes with wonder at the potential of a whole new realm of knowledge hidden within the reimantic knowledge she already owned.

The handsome man simply smiled in response, his piercing blue eyes continuing to look past her. ”It is not something I can teach... you have to learn to perceive the elements with more than just your eyes, for they are more than just shape and size.”

Disappointed by his answer, Kamilla could already tell by the man’s posture that he was preparing to leave. ”Wait, at least tell me your name? Mine is Kamilla... Kamilla Circe Gordon.” She was uncertain as to why she offered her full name, despite stating it proudly as if it were a badge of honor, perhaps it was? As a skilled mage, Kamilla already knew that she respected the stranger more than most people she’d met for similar amounts of times, perhaps that was why she felt he deserved her full name.

”It was a pleasure to meet you Kamilla Circe Gordon... I am Duncan Citrine of the Maelstrom pod. Goodluck.”

With that the man turned around and began making his way away from Kamilla, her brown eyes watching after him until he disappeared from sight. It was only then, that he’d said goodbye after never once looking her directly in the eye that Kamilla realised something about the handsome reimancer. ”He’s blind.” The words were muttered underneath her breath, but they did not change anything. He’d given her a lot to think about and there was no doubt in her mind that his words would follow her around for a few days. She needed to improve.

Now left alone with her thoughts and plenty to think about, Kamilla found herself staring at the two dissected stones for what could easily have been a chime or two. The blind man, Duncan, was of course correct, there was a difference, but didn’t quite understand the use of it. He’d said to try and look beyond their appearance, how could she possibly do that?

Sighing, Kamilla held each stone beside one of her ears and closed her eyes, taking a loud breath as she attempted to calm her mind, only to listen. She remained that way for at least a chime before giving up and opening her eyes. ”Nothing...” Was it possible that she’d been missing an entire aspect of Reimancy all these years? The thought alone both upset and confounded her. If Duncan’s advice was anything to go by, the answer was a resounding yes.

Remembering that sitting at the pools was only meant to be a short respite and not her plan for the day, Kamilla was reminded of her actual goal. ”The cart... right.” For now she’d have to settle for the ‘spiritless’ stone, as Duncan had called it, placing both the dissected stones into her satchel to ruminate on at a later date.

Taking another breath of preparation, Kamilla cupped both hands and placed them together, each fingertip meeting with its respective twin. Once again she reached within herself and breathed out a steady stream of glistening lavender res which poured straight into the opening in her cupped hands, created by moving her thumbs out of the way.

Once she’d produced a satisfying amount, Kamilla once again willed her res to take the practiced shape before willing it to transmute, keeping Duncan’s stone in mind instead of her own this time.

She felt the cool weight of the stone between her palms and opened her eyes to investigate, finding the expected reflective glossy dark stone. Whether she’d succeeded in giving it ‘spirit’ would have to wait as she intended to use that particular stone for the cart.

Bagging the newly created stone, Kamilla got to her feet, relieved to feel that the ache in her thigh had mostly subsided. Hopefully the sawmill wouldn’t be so far that she’d need to take another break before she reached it. Ready to leave, the mage cast one last glance towards the community pools, leaving with a newly realised respect for the location and its creator.

Returning to her objective for the day, Kamilla quickly found herself uncomfortable with her surroundings, venturing through the jungle that she’d sworn to never dive back into, though she’d known it would be unavoidable as long as she lived in Syka. Of course, it helped that there was a somewhat well trodden path, but having trees on either side of her came with the unavoidable concern of being ambushed by another troupe of monkeys.

Thankfully, the walk didn’t drag on for too long before the jungle path finally opened up into a large clearly and sat in the middle, near a reasonably sized river, was the Syka sawmill. In the distance, she could see a few large and unfamiliar creatures that she could only assume to be the ‘Ashta’ that Nesra had mentioned.

It took her only a moment to spot a man near the sawmill, the only humanoid visible in the vicinity, and begin heading toward him, assuming and hoping that it was the man she was looking for.

About halfway through her walk toward the sawmill, the man seemed to spot her and began walking toward her as well, the two meeting inform of the lone bungalow in the clearing. The short distance had given her time to take in as much of the man’s appearance as possible. His skin was darker than her own and his gaze felt intense, even from a distance, his features both handsome and unique at the same time.
