72nd of Spring,519AV

It was starting to feel like too long since Kamilla had really had any time to herself and the mage had noticed her frustration growing day by day. Since leaving Sahova, her practice and studies of her magic had seen a significant decrease in frequency and improvement, something that she was not at all pleased about. The mage recalled her time in Sahova, surrounded by magic day in and out, her excitement almost never fading. It had been too long and Kamilla was sure that her skills had suffered for it. Sure she’d been forced to use it in dire situations, but that was far from studying and trying to improve her craft. It was time for a self imposed intervention.

While telling herself that she’d make time to practice her magic was simple enough, there was still the actual chore of deciding which and what aspect of it to try and improve. Luckily, ideas were not in short supply. Even though it had been quite some time since she’d sat herself down with the intention of growing her magical knowledge and skill, Kamilla had still been picking up ideas and tricks she wanted to try whenever they presented themselves. After all, her mind was always searching for new things to try out, even when she didn’t have time to do so.

Taking a seat in the shade of one of the many trees of the peculiar location that was Swing Beach, Kamilla fastened the end of the leather leash she’d been holding to a nearby swing, Yen watching her from the other end, almost as if to ask if she was being serious. ”Don’t give me that Yen, the last time you ran off you nearly got us both lost in the jungle.” The yowling meowed lazily in response, averting her gaze with what Kamilla considered a hint of sass before curling up into a ball and closing her eyes.

A chime passed by with Kamilla simply staring at her beautiful grey companion while it napped, whether it was the Felius inside her or simply her own emotions, the sight of the sleeping feline filled her with a calm and pleasant feeling. It had been years since she’d bought the yowling in Riverfall and despite Yen’s rebellious habits, Kamilla had never once really regretted her purchase. However, she did feel bad that she couldn’t allow the cat to spread her wings, but better safe than sorry, at least that’s what Kamilla kept telling herself.

Satisfied with Yen’s choice of activity as well as how secure the tail end of the leather leash was, Kamilla reached into her bag to retrieve a few of her own supplies for the day. Some ink, a quill, her grimoire and several loose blank sheets of paper were placed on the sand in front of her, stacked one on top of the other in case of wind. She’d decided to make her return to the art of glyphing, something she’d truly not practiced in quite some time, unlike Reimancy which she’d found several uses for in recent weeks.

A gentle breeze danced around her, stray locks of dark hair doing the same as Kamilla enjoyed the feeling of the air as it caressed her exposed skin. Since arriving in Syka, her style of dress had slightly changed due to the heat. While she had never been one to hide beneath layers of clothing, most of her wardrobe being thin and revealing, she had learned that her penchant for black clothing would not work well in Syka, the settlement was just far too sunny for that. Instead she’d taken to wearing the other colours contained in her wardrobe, currently a dark purple shirt skirt with a longer tail and a matching scarf wrapped tightly around her bust we’re all that accompanied her unavoidable thug high leather boots. Excluding the footwear, the rest of her attire left plenty of skin exposed and made living in Syka’s extreme heat that much more bearable.

”Well, let’s get started... but where do I even begin...” she mused to herself, Yen’s ears peeking up at the sound of her master’s voice before flattening once again.

Unable to decide, Kamilla felt herself deflate, literally sighing heavily as her enthusiasm faded away due to lack of inspiration. It was odd, the way magic excited her, but to the mage there was nothing more interesting. Learning about magic and learning of new ways to use it was to her what she assumed a regular person would feel if they discovered they could fly and then discovered they could breathe water too. It was an exhilarating and intimate experience every time she felt herself progress, learning new and fantastic skills. It was empowering, and she clung to that feeling so tightly. After losing her family, it was the only consistent thing she had.

Another sigh as she broke out of her thoughts, checking on the napping Yennefer for a moment before plucking her ‘grimoire’ from the sand.

The thick leather bound book had been one of the first possessions gained in her ‘new’ life in Zeltiva, after fleeing Sunberth, and over the years she’d filled it with several things, magical and not. Nonchalantly flipping through the pages, lacking any inspiration or ideas, Kamilla found herself pausing for a brief moment as she reached a very old sketch of Faolan the kelvic wolf, one of the only people she’d ever considered a friend. Of course, she hadn’t seen him in years and being an entire region and sea away from Zeltiva it was unlikely she ever would again.

Not wanting to dwell on thoughts of the past for too long, Kamilla resumes her unenthusiastic turning of the pages, glancing over each one briefly before turning to the next. This time she passed by some animation notes, which were familiar as she’d read through and used them only days before when creating her cart golem. Unfortunately, they were of no use to her at the moment so she continued on before suddenly pausing on one page.

Brown eyes widened slightly, a glint if excitement in them as Kamilla stared down at the odd collection of drawn symbols. It was a sample on glyphing, her first attempt at combining a focus, barrier, switch and trigger into something greater than the sum of its parts. A sigil.

If she recalled correctly, she had drawn the sigil one night in her room at the Kulkulkan Inn in Riverfall and had intended on trying to use it to store a reimantic spell, but had been interrupted moments before by Chrysanthemum the bard. Kamilla recalled how smitten the bard seemed to be with her, and every other woman he met, though she had found him quite amusing.

Shrugging the memories off, Kamilla perked up, reaching for a blank page before grabbing the quill and ink. It was settled. She would have her first try at creating and using a functional sigil. It may have something she’d never tried before, but the way forward was somewhat clear in her mind’s eye. Her enthusiasm had returned.

Using the original sigil as a template for reference, Kamilla began with the glyph she was most familiar with, the focus glyph. Long curved swooping lines were drawn without lifting her quill until the end point met with where she’d started, two circles were added, drawn as nearly as she could manage and the glyph was complete. Leaning back a bit, Kamilla’s dark brown eyes scanned the page in admiration of the focus glyph she’d just drawn, it appeared to be a six petaled flower made of curved lines with an outer and inner circle. It had taken a bit longer than usual but she was happy with its appearance.

Casting a glance in Yen’s direction while she dipped the quill into the ink once more, Kamilla saw that the winged feline hadn’t moved a muscle since the last time she’d checked, lips turned upwards at the ends at the sight of the reliably lazy yowlwing. If there was one thing she could always count on, it was Yennefer’s ability to get comfortable and take a nap anywhere without fail. She’d once seen the cat take a nap on a bowl of fruits, prickly pineapples included, she’d been equal parts baffled and amused.

Satisfied with Yen’s inaction, Kamilla returned to the task at hand, this time getting to work on the barrier glyphs, which would easily the most time consuming aspect of creating the sigil. It was repetitive. A series of horizontally closed off ‘x’ shapes were drawn side by side, back to back, slowly bending and turning until she’d drawn enough to entirely encircle the focus glyph, therefore creating the barrier which would hold the magic in.

The barrier had taken Kamilla far longer to draw than the familiar focus glyph, but now that it was complete, there was only one part of the simple sigil missing... the trigger. Humming in thought for only a few ticks, Kamilla quickly decided on a suitable trigger, eyeing her sleeping feline as she did, before putting quill to paper once more,

’Lower the barrier when the keyword ‘Yennefer’ is spoken.’

It was painfully simple, but it didn’t matter, it was her first time testing a sigil after all, therefore she saw no need in being overly complicated.

Sitting back, Kamilla could only smile down at her work with a hint of pride in her expression, while it was nearly identical to the template, the new sigil was certainly a lot neater in her opinion. Now that it had been drawn, Kamilla was ready to actually test her sigil’s ability to contain and release magic.

Ready to put her sigil to the test, Kamilla placed the page neatly on the sand, face up with a stone for a paperweight, and about five meters away from where Yennefer was peacefully napping in the shade of a palm tree. For her own safety, the mage took several steps backwards as well, not wanting to get caught in the crossfire, despite doubting that anything dangerous could happen considering the element she had decided to use for the experiment. Air.

It made sense to use her least dangerous element as the first tester for her attempt at storing magic, hopefully the worst that could happen would be a burst of air, though in her opinion the worst thing that could happen would be failure. Regardless, she was ready to begin, a deep breath and a happy hum would fill her lungs with res which she then exhaled with ease. In front of her, a small cloud of glistening lavender res hovered, patiently awaiting her will.

Kamilla eyed the cloud curiously for a good few ticks before deciding on how to use it, storing a simple gust seemed like a waste of an opportunity, or rather a boring use of an opportunity to do something with some flair, so she chose something else and the res followed her will and began to spin. The cloud began slow but quickly sped up, forming a tiny glistening purple twister approximately the size of a watermelon.

The speed at which her res now responded was remarkable, especially when she compared it with how sluggish it had been when she'd first been initiated. It was a pleasing thought, to think that she'd improved in such leaps and bounds over the years, her reimancy going from a tool she could use to a simple extension of herself and her will.

Still mesmerised by the minituature lavender twister of res, Kamilla began to move the spell further away from her and slowly downward toward the page,  maintaining its spinning motion, until it was hovering only a few inches above the page and glyph at which point it began to attract the air around it with impressive force. Sand was whipped up along with the growing winds but before her spell could cause too much of an effect on the surrounding area, she forced it downward  and into the page, transmuting the res into air right before it made contact, the glyphs glowing as the magic made wind completely disappeared within it, the surrounding area quickly quieting down as if there had never been a miniature twister in the first place, the only evidence of its existence being the spiral like patterns left in the sand around the page.

Once the sand had settled and she'd given the sigil several ticks of cautious space, satisfied that it was safe to approach the seemingly harmless page Kamilla took a few steps forward, stopping just short of the page and kneeling down to observe it, maintaining a few steps of distance. From there the page looked absolutely unremarkable, a piece of pager covered in odd symbols.  Glyphing was a very subtle form of world magic, unassuming, which made it all the more impressive... and useful.

A small smile sat comfortably upon Kamilla's red painted lips, she'd succeeded in storing the spell, or at least it seemed so at the moment. Next, she needed to test the switch, to release the spell, but first she needed to give herself a bit more distance again. This time, double the distance seemed like a good choice, with the res having been transmuted before entry.

Hearing a loud rustling coming from the treeline Kamilla turned to find its source finding nothing before a more alarming thought concern crossed her mind. Spinning in the other direction, Kamilla turned her gaze toward Yennefer, having already experienced the plight of the yowlwing's response to activity in the jungle. To her great dismay, she was just in time to catch the foolish feline's tail disappearing into the bushes.

"Not again... Yennefer!"

The moment she'd called out her pet's name, Kamilla's eyes widened in shock, head whipping around just in time to see the glyphs on the page glowing before she was blown off of her feet and into the dirt a short distance away, eyes shut and hands rising to protect her face as she landed with a loud gasp of air. "Shyke! Shyke!... Shyke!" The first two attempts at the profanity had come out as little more than breathless coughs,  the third carried with it the needed volume and intensity to convey her frustration.

She knew reimancy and therefore knew what had happened, the moment she'd spoken the trigger word the sigil had released her spell and the spinning air had rapidly expanded, blasting her off of her feet, even now the twisting air currents blew beach sand in all directions  as it slowly dissipated, but she didn't have time for that. Somehow, Yennefer had pulled herself free of her leash at the worst possible moment and she needed to go after her... again!

Annoyed, frustrated and clearly disheveled, Kamilla darted after her pet cat and into the jungle for the second time that season. She thought back to the first time the feline had chased after something forcing Kamilla to follow in pursuit, thankfully, she'd managed to find Yen safe, but then they'd gotten lost and bumped into the savage, Quzon, who had extorted her into hunting a trio of nandhai  in exchange for leading her back to Syka. Although she'd learned a bit about reimancy tactics in a more combat orientated manner, the entire ordeal had been unpleasant and left somewhat of a bitter taste in her mouth.

"Yen! Get back here this instant!" She called out angrily, already several steps into the unbearably humid undergrowth of the jungle, thick foliage surrounding her in shade of the canopy. She had no idea which direction the cat had gone this time and already she could feel panic rising within her, she couldn't lose Yennefer,  the stupid petching feline was her only family... along with Roo. Hands rose to her head in frustration as Kamilla twisted from side to side in search of any sign of the yowlwing but finding none, so instead she decided to continue on in the direction she'd been heading, aiming to trample through a large bush with large pointy red tipped leaves.

"Woah! Hold it right there! Not another step!"

Kamilla had barely taken two steps toward the bush when she'd heard the voice call out to her, strong and deep,  clearly belonging to a man. The threatening connotation to the words roused the cautious instincts of someone raised in Sunberth and Kamilla spun around to face the source of the voice,  hands held at her sides in a clawed form as lavender res had already begun to form over the tips of her nails.

She looked wild.

Her skin, hair and clothes were covered in  sand from the blast of wind, hair blown into a disheveled state and eyes with a mixture of panic, frustration and concern all visible within them.

Her gaze met with the topless form of the man that had spoken, bright red hair covered his face and chin, while tattoos covered the bare skin of his torso. He wore a leather harness around his shoulders and at his back Kamilla could see the hilt of an unseen weapon.

"What do you want! I don't have time for this, so back away or you WILL regret it."

Immediately the man had raised both hands defensively, clearly attempting to calm her down, but Kamilla was in no mood to be approached or talked to or attacked or anything else, she needed to find Yen and if this man didn't turn and leave that instant, she was going to fill him with a few warning shards of stone,  the res on her finger tips already growing pointer, giving her the illusion of having cat like claws.

"Woah... Just hold on, I'm only trying to help. You were about to step through a very unpleasant bush, those pointy leaves would leave you in pain for hours... I'm a tracker, let me help you find your weird cat."

Hearing the man's words, Kamilla's gaze darted toward the spike tipped leaves of the bush only steps away from her, figuring that the man may have helped her indeed, but that didn't make his appearance in the middle of the jungle any less suspicious, or threatening. She was well aware of what men were capable of, it was a cautionary tale told by every older woman in Sunberth. "How do you know about my cat!? Are you following me?"

The man's hands rose slightly higher into the air after having just lowered ever so slightly, "Woah! Yes I was..." Hearing the confession, Kamilla's res coated hands immediately pointed in the man's director, urging him to quickly finish his sentence. "... I was walking on the beach and saw you get knocked off your feet by that magic page before running off into the jungle after your cat! I'm a member of the rangers, my specialty us tracking, I'm just trying to help!" While his voice remained stern for the most part, Kamilla could hear a hint of panic in the way he rushed his words. Good. It meant he at least felt somewhat threatened by her.

Feeling safer in the knowledge that the man was being cautious around her, having clearly realised that she was indeed dangerous, Kamilla took a deep breath in an attempt to calm down... at least a little. Her posture relaxed somewhat, but she maintained the small res formations on each finger tip, brown eyes trained on the man as well as the distance between him and herself. She reminded herself that he'd said he wanted to help and claimed to be a ranger and a tracker. If this was true then she did, indeed, need his help.

Another deep breath. "Okay, you want to help, fine. Let's go then. Which way?" Hands went to her hips as Kamilla waited on the man's response, she was clearly anxious and inpatient, the thought of something attacking Yennefer remained in the forefront of her mind and she dreaded the thought more than anything else she could imagine at that moment. She sincerely hoped this man was the capable tracker he claimed to be.

"Okay okay. Just put those claws away there tigress..." Brown eyes narrowed threateningly at the man's response,  she was in no mood for jokes. "I'm just trying to lighten the mood. Okay... uhm... this way." With that and a short look around, the man pulled an oversized machete from its place on his back and easily swung it at a few low hanging branches, severing them and creating a pathway. "Well? Come on."

Kamilla remained one more tick, arms crossing over her chest suspiciously as she watched the man's large form, contemplating whether to trust him or not, before finally giving in and following. She kept her res on hand though, literally. "How do you know she went this way?" She made no attempt to hide the agitation and distrust in her voice, she couldn't understand how anyone could follow a creature as small as Yennefer through the thick foliage of the jungle.

"You really are a feisty one aren't you tigress... and beautiful too..." The moment the comment had left his mouth, the man's blue eyes caught the warning glare Kamilla had shot at him. "... I, uh, the brush was disturbed over here, clear sign that something passed through it... and I'm just saying... You are... beautiful." She sighed, not interested in the man's compliments at all. "Name's Chi, Ken Chi by the way... and don't worry, we'll find your cat miss?" "Kamilla... and that cat has a name,  Yennefer."

"Kamilla the beautiful feisty tigress. Got it.

If she hadn't been so concerned with finding Yen, Kamilla would surely have rolled her eyes at the man's attempt at flattery, still following close behind as he swung his massive machete around to create a path for them to travel though.

Having calmed down slightly, Kamilla took the time to investigate the flirtatious tracker. Besides his bright red hair, the first thing she noticed about him was the he was a giant of a man, standing at least two heads taller than herself and covered in thick muscle from his bare chest to his loin cloth and boots. This was the second time she'd run into a hulking man in the jungle while chasing after Yen. She hoped it wouldn't become a common occurrence.

"So... you know magic..."

While it seemed like the man, Ken, was just attempting to make conversation,  Kamilla instinctively tensed up, not enjoying her secret being revealed, even after so many years and so far from Sunberth, she still felt her magic was something she needed to hide. With a quick glance and a charming smile aimed back towards her, Ken seemed to notice her apprehension.

"Don't look so startled, it's not a big deal, you're not the only mage in Syka... but if you're that uncomfortable with it then you can trust me to keep my mouth shut."

Another annoyingly charming smile was directed towards her, to which Kamilla did not respond.

"Okay... silence is good. I'll just do all the talking."

The last bit was muttered under his breath, but certainly not quiet enough that Kamilla hadn't heard it. Not that it matteted,  she didn't want to talk, just find Yennefer.

The 'silence' lasted a glorious ten chimes, though it wasn't actually silence at all so much as Ken speaking and pointing out signs of Yen's trail that Kamilla did not see or understand. The only silence was her own, she'd spent the time simply nodding at him in confirmation as her panic cooled from a rapid boil of anxiety to calm steam. They'd ventured a bit too far into the jungle for her liking and Kamilla was beginning to wonder if this man was just leading her on a wind goose chase. Finally, she spoke...

"Do you actually know what you're doing here... I've been following you and watching you chop through the jungle with that oversized cooking knife for the past ten chimes and I still haven't seen any actual signs of my damned yowlwing."

Once again, Kamilla made no attempt to conceal her frustration, but Ken seemed unaffected by it, only sighing heavily as he came to a sudden halt an turned to face her.

"Listen tigress. You're worried about your cat, I get that. But we're on her trail and we'll only catch up to her once she stops moving. There's nothing we can do about that."

The man's calm and stern response left Kamilla without a retort of her own, surprised by how reassuring his words had been. "Okay... " She did not know what else to say, nor was she willing to thank him for his assistance just yet, not until they found Yen. Without any further conversation, Ken offered her a nod and turned to continue his tracking.

"So, you must be that beautiful new seamstress everyone's talking about... though I'll admit you're far more stunning than I'd imagined. No one mentioned how feisty you were though..."

This time Kamilla did roll her eyes, he was lying of course, she knew Syka was a small settlement and that news traveled fast, but she doubted that her appearance was such a prominent topic of discussion amongst its residents. "Is this what you do with every woman you come across? Rush to the rescue and bombard them with compliments?" Unfortunately, Kamilla had to admit that he was handsome, annoyingly so, but she certainly wouldn't say it out loud.

Turning to offer her another one of his damned charming smiles, Ken offered her a few words in response before continuing on. "Only the beautiful ones..."

That earned him another eye roll as well as a small smile, which she was glad that he wouldn't see since he had his back turned to her.

"So, tigress... Where are you fro-" Stopping suddenly mid sentence and lifting his hand to signal for Kamilla to do the same, she could tell that something was up. "What is it? Is it Yen?"

As if summoned by her name, Kamilla heard the soft rustling of leaves and turned to see her beloved gray winged cat chasing some form of lizard in a circle nearby. A large smile crossed her face as relief washed over her, Kamilla taking a step towards her cat but quickly being cut off by Ken's very muscular arm.

Puzzled, the mage turned her brown gaze towards the man's face, brows knitted together in confusion, to which he responded with one whispered word, his voice marching his current, very serious, expression.

"Dhani..."

Dhani? The word meant nothing to her,  but she could tell by Ken's demeanor that it was no joking matter. Every part of the man's calm easygoing personality had been replaced with a tense seriousness that urged Kamilla to believe that she too should be worried, though it was not easy to be concerned when one had no idea what to be convened about. "Dhani? What is that?" She was now whispering as well, to which Ken responded with a look of disbelief. Apparently, it was something she should have known about, judging by his reaction.

"Dhani... giant snake people?  Carnivorous, venomous, viscous..."

Was he being serious? While what he was saying sounded terrifying, there was no such monstrosity in sight. "Okay, but I think I would have noticed signs of a giant snake if there was one nearby... it's not exactly easy to miss." Everywhere she looked, Kamilla could only see trees and bushes, surely Ken was overreacting.

This time the man did not speak, instead pointing towards the clearing where Yennefer was still chasing after the scuttling lizard before grabbing the hilt of his massive machete with both hands as if ready to fight for his life.

Following his direction, Kamilla's eyes widened and her breath hitched as she saw what Ken was talking about. The ground of the clearing surrounding Yen wasn't naturally devoid of plant life, it was worn by something large, odd dragging grooves formed a ring in the circle with several offshoots heading in different directions, one of which lead to a nearby burrow like hole in the ground, easily big enough for a person to squeeze through,  meaning that whatever used it was terrifyingly large.

Her heart felt as if it were sinking more and more with each tick of realisation... They were on the doorstep of a Dhani nest and Kamilla was terrified. The only silver lining for the moment was that there was none in sight. They just needed to grab Yennefer and go. As soon as possible!

As if their predicament wasn't bad enough already, Kamilla noticed that something was off with Ken, his seriousness didn't seem to be that of worry. No, she could see it in his eyes. Hatred and anger boiled behind the bright blue orbs. Petch. Of course she'd be stuck with the one man who actually wanted to fight a giant snake.

Wanting no part of whatever grudge Ken seemed to have against giant snakes, Kamilla decided she'd at least try and persuade him to do the logical thing... that being for them to grab Yen and then get the Hai out of that horrid jungle before whatever lived in that nest showed itself. She prayed that he would see reason.

"Ken... I'm going to grab Yen, then let's just get out of here... Please!." She was doing her best to control the nerves in her voice, but to no avail, though it did seem that she'd gotten through to him. Ken's intense gaze seem to soften slightly in realisation, Kamilla assumed that the man realised that if they were to stay around any longer than necessary, he would be endangering not only his life,  but hers as well. With visible reluctance and a tightening grip on his machete, to the point where his knuckles had turned white, he nodded in her direction.

Relieved that the handsome brute had some intelligence, Kamilla turned on her heel, moving towards Yennefer who had finally caught the tiny lizard which was now squirming desperately in her mouth,  but her advance was halted by a loud serious of creaking branches and rustling from behind, causing Kamilla to stop dead in her tracks and swallow hard. She had never been a religious person, but in that moment she prayed to whichever gods were listening that she'd turn around and be pleasantly surprised to see nothing. Unfortunately, her prayer went unanswered.

Turning around cautiously, in tandem with Ken, Kamilla's heart dropped, eyes bulged and a visible tremble ran though her entire body as her gaze met with what was without a doubt a Dhani... a giant snake, it's head lowering slowly towards them from the thick branches of the trees above.

In that moment, faced with such a terrifying creature, Kamilla was sure that her heart had stopped. The monstrosity seemed to stare the two of them down for a moment before rearing it's head, but before she or it could do anything,  Kamilla heard Ken shout in anger, instantly drawing the creature's attention as he lunged towards it with his oversized machete.

Absolutely petrified but spurred on by her fear nonetheless, Kamilla forced her legs into action, spinning around on her heel and sprinting to grab Yennefer, bending just in time to avoid the large tail of the overgrown serpent, noticing a giant growth on the tip of its tail which splintered part of a large tree trunk nearby. "Shyke! Kamilla shouted form her spot, prone on the ground, protecting Yennefer.

Knowing she couldn't just stay there while Ken fought for both their lives, Kamilla forced herself to her feet once more, Yennefer seemingly petrified within her grasp, as if she wasn't the reason they were all in the mess in the first place. Back on her feet, Kamilla spun about to find thr giant serpent and Ken's location, quickly finding both nearby, just in time to see the monster fling it's bulbous tail at the tracker, who blocked it by using both hands to hold his giant up as if it were a shield.

Kamilla winced at the tremendous force delivered by the snake's tail with each blow as it swung again and again,  each hit sending the stoic Ken a few meters backwards despite having dug his feet deep into the ground and yet the man remained steadfast. With each blow warded off, Kamilla could almost feel the strain his bulging muscles must have been taking and yet he remained on his feet. He was remarkable, though it certainly wasn't the time for compliments and awe.
