“Bree? You ready?” Taz called as she walked down the deck steps and onto the sand. The Ixam and herself had decided today was the day they were going to go foraging for much needed supplies for the Inn. Bree needed to get out and Taz needed to do something different than clean Inn rooms, change bed sheets and do laundry. She loved to cook, but the young Innkeeper loved being out and about just as much and she’d done little of it lately.

The Jungle Ixam was indeed ready and waited somewhat impatiently by her cart and the harness Taz had waiting for her. The Innkeeper hurried as much as she could, but still took the time to carefully hitch up Bree, making sure the tack was comfortable and secure. It was then she indeed added the baskets, in their empty state, to the back of the cart. Then she climbed on the cart and leaned back. “Go easy on me.” She advised the Ixam, knowing the lizard probably wouldn’t.

“Remind me again why I have to haul this cart?” Bree grumbled.

“Because we have a ton of stuff. Buckets for raking clams, bushel baskets for the fruit I plan on picking. We need to go all over, Bree. And I can’t carry all this stuff myself in a backpack nor can you in saddlebags.” She added to the Ixam, grinning good naturedly. She didn’t want the Ixam’s crabby mood to affect hers. Taz was excited to get out, go foraging, and bring some things back to the Inn.

The lizard set out, directed by Tazrae’s gentle instructions. The Innkeeper did not make the Ixam wear a bit or bridle like she’d been found with. Instead, she trusted them to have an open dialog and get their goods moved to and from when they needed too. Bree, knowing what Tazrae wanted to do, set off at a trot and headed out. Truth be told Taz loved riding in the cart. Bree had a unique sideways gait that bumped the cart along smoothly and when they were on the cobbles and out of the tangles of the jungle, the Ixam would run openly and take Tazrae’s breath away. Usually both would be laughing by the time they arrived at their destination.

Taz clutched the seat, laughing lightly, as Bree slowly got into the spirit of things and took them both speeding by Mathias’ bungalow, past the turnoff to the Community Pool, and then on by the Mercantile. Taz waved to Juli who was out on the raised deck as they passed, laughter escaping her as Bree sped up. “Slow down!” She called, half protesting… “We’re coming up on the Commons and there’s bound to be people there.” Tazrae warned, even as the Ixam took a sharp turn to the right and headed past some of the major features of the Commons to hit a smaller cobbled path that did force her to slow.

Before Taz knew it, the Ixam was pulling to a stop in the midst of the Banana Grove, where Taz lithely hopped down. Many of the trees were laden with fruit. Taz took out her bowie knife and headed into the trees while Bree waited, resting on her haunches and washing her face. Bananas had the silliest names. Randal had taught her about them when she’d first arrived. The group of bananas all ended at one place, and that grouping was called a hand. Individual bananas were called fingers. Multiple hands that grow in a cluster are called a stalk which could contain two to thirty hands. Taz made a careful choice, cutting down one stalk that had multiple hands on it of various shades of ripeness. About half were still green, several were perfectly ready to eat, and a couple of the hands looked past their prime. Taz didn’t mind. The brown ones she cooked with, often baking into bread, muffins, and scones.

The stalk was heavy and she heaved it over her shoulder, bowing under its weight. Carefully she walked heavy-footed back to the cart and left the stalk tucked in its cargo area. “Great… that’s one thing off our list.” She added, climbing back onto the cart and assisting Bree in turning around before they headed back down the overgrown trail to the Commons. They passed through The Commons, and turned south on the trail, headed for several places along the way. The trail was bumpy and Taz grumbled a time or two as they came to a halt near a mango tree they liked that was just off the trail.

The Innkeeper left Bree tied in her traces and grabbed a bushel basket to go slip into the jungle and walk the few feet to where the mangos grew. She quickly set the basket down and began picking rapidly, taking a full bushel though she knew she’d pass them out on her way back down through town. When her basket was full, Taz heaved it up, balanced it on her hip, and carried it to Bree’s cart. She slipped it in the back and climbed back into the seat. They were off again.

The afternoon went like that… stopping here and there for noted things in the jungle. Taz collected wild kiwi, several pineapples, and then stopped to gather a few fallen coconuts that didn’t look like rot had set in. There had been a storm the night before, so it was far easier foraging than it usually was since Taz had no clue as to how to actually climb a coconut palm and no desire to deal with the still green nut if she did cut one fresh from the tree. Coconuts were far better freshly fallen or captured freshly floating in the ocean if the palms were growing in mangroves.

From those stops, the pair worked their way east. Taz harvested yucca roots, stopped to peel bark from a cinnamon tree, plucked vanilla beans, and stopped at a massive ancient grape vine to pick grapes that had gone wild. She stopped along the way to gather taro, various citruses, and finally ended up at a small stand of green plantains, where she harvested another stalk for cooking. Plantains had replaced potatoes in a lot of ways in her diet. She made them just like she would potatoes, and thought nothing of it now, so far from where they grew potatoes in containers in their courtyard gardens.

Taz smiled at the bounty in Bree’s cart before she paused. “We’re almost to treasure point. Do you want to head over, beachcomb a bit, bathe in the sea, and then head back to begin to put up all this food?” She asked Bree. The Ixam had been working just as hard as Tazrae had, growing more and more careful in her maneuvering the cart the more loaded down it got.

Bree turned her head back and grinned at Tazrae. “I’d absolutely LOVE to play in the waves. And at this time of day, part of Treasure point is in the shade.” She said thoughtfully, then grinned with a reptilian smile. And with that, Bree knew where to go. Tazrae stopped her along the way though, gathering figs and papaya, then stopping at a stand of sugarcane that stretched up one side of Treasure point to harvest enough to dry and grind into sugar. Once she had her bundle in, Taz turned Bree onto the beach and then unharnessed her from the cart after finding some good shade to park the vehicle in.

The beach was a mess. There was debris and litter everywhere, mostly seaweeds and tossed up driftwood, but once Taz started walking, she noticed other things. There were broken crates here and there, the contents scattered across the sand. Fine porcelain dishes, most smashed, seemed to have come from the crates. Was it a shipwreck or some of the flotsam the storm the night before had churned up? Taz wasn’t certain. The pottery pieces intermingled with the porcelain would make interesting mosaics to some artist. Taz would have to let people know it was here. She herself didn’t have the patience to pick it all up, but the potter in town, Nesra, might because the glaze looked unique enough, she might want to see if she could replicate it.

Taz stopped to watch Bree play in the waves. After just a moment’s hesitation, the Sykan stripped off her clothing and joined the Ixam in the frothy water. The tide had turned and was coming in, which Tazrae felt was one of the best times to swim. She lost herself in the turquoise waters, wading in waist deep and then floating on her back letting Syna tickle her belly. The beach was relaxing, soothing even, especially with the Ixam frolicking in the waves which was both a blessing and a curse. The thrashing could invite sharks, but the lizard was also good at seeing them as well… so it was an added layer of protection.

Tazrae swam a while, gently paddling around the uncertain waters of the point, before she noticed something high up on the beach. It was tucked against the stone cliff that made up the base of Treasure Point. There was a path on the other side up to the point, but from the beach it was completely inaccessible. Taz swam for shore, curious, and eventually left the water to walk up the beach towards the cliff, willing to investigate. Bree trailed behind her, tail lashing back and forth and tongue flicking in and out, gathering information on what was settled up near the cliffs.

“It’s a crate.” The Ixam said helpfully causing Taz to laugh.

“Of course it is. I can see that from here. What’s in it though, I wonder?” Taz asked, knowing it was rare that an intact crate was found, let alone one as big as this one was. It was as big as she was tall, far wider, and thick. It looked like four people could easily fit inside of it. There was strange writing on its exterior, burned into the wood of the crate. There was a slew of barnacles growing off one corner, as if it had been buried in the sand except for that one corner sticking out. Taz approached it, then circled it, marveling at what it was. She put her hands on it and rocked it. It was heavy, but not immobile.

Bree rose up on her hind legs and used her forelegs to grab at it and rock it as well. “It would fit on the cart, though it would try and tip it terribly. But I bet I could handle it as long as it wasn’t heavier than me and put me up in the air.” She mused, glancing at Tazrae.

“Should we take it back to the Inn and open it?” Taz asked, curious.

Bree nodded. “Sure. Even if there’s nothing in it of value, the crate itself would make a grand shed of sorts.” She added, knowing Tazrae had been complaining about them needing a shed to house the paddleboards and paddles now that Randal had them made for her.

“That’s brilliant, Bree.” Taz said, reaching up and stroking the Ixam’s neck with affection. The lizard trilled and they turned, heading back up the beach to re-hitch Bree to the cart and drag it down here to load the crate on its back cargo area. Taz hitched Bree up quickly but carefully, and the two managed to make it back down to the beach. The Innkeeper had to move all the produce and foraged items out of the cargo area of the cart and piled them high up on the seat and under it, leaving her literally nowhere to sit. She didn’t mind. The walk back to the Protea would be long, but it would be worth it just to acquire the huge crate.

Backing the cart up to the crate, the Innkeeper managed to tip the crate over and spilled it into the cargo area of the cart. It was heavy and the wheels groaned, so Taz was worried she might destroy the cart. However, what was more concerning was that Bree was being lifted up, almost forcefully by the counterbalance action of the heavy crate being in the back of the cart causing the shafts to try and tip-up, trying to loft the Ixam upwards in the air.

Taz quickly wrapped the rope around the thing, securing it to the back of the cart – as much as would fit – and climbed on top of Bree to add weight to the Ixam, while placing her feet on either side of the shafts helping to hold it down. The Ixam tucked in and without complaint dragged the wheeled cart through the sand, back up on the path leading to Treasure Point, and eventually back onto the cobbled pathway.

“Is it too heavy?” Taz asked, her voice laced with concern. Bree shook her head.

“No, you climbing aboard and adding weight to me helped. Its easy to haul, just awkward with it trying to tip me skyward.” She said, thinning her scaled lips and flicking her tongue out in irritation. The pair made their slow way home, moving around to the front of the Inn where it faced the beach to offload the crate. It slid easily from its precarious perch on the cart once the ropes were released.

Then Tazrae took precious time to unload the foraged goods from the cart before she released Bree, rubbed her down with oil, and walked the cart back to where she stored it next to the Reptile Garden. Then she headed off to find Duncan and bring the blind mage back to identify the object she’d just brought home.

When Taz returned with the mage, he stood gazing at it with unseeing eyes for a long while, then turned to look at her. “I’m afraid you’ve found a crate.” He said gently, teasingly, as he lifted his hand up and scratched at his neck as if it were sore. “I think you’ll need to open it to make a proper identification.” He added.

Taz laughed, went to fetch her crowbar, as Bree studied the newcomer.

“Do you have to tease her so much?” The Ixam said gently, yawning after being overworked hauling the thing back from Treasure Point. She studied the blind mage, knowing he meant no harm.

“She’s too serious sometimes.” He said, walking to the crate and running his fingers over the wood, looking at it with his hands when his eyes could not give him any additional information. “It has one potent magical aura though… whatever is inside does something and does something well.” He added, curious as Taz returned and began prying off the front cover of the crate. It didn’t have a traditional nailed on top, but one side was obviously the ‘open me here’ direction. Once she’d wedged the crow bar into the crack and had started heaving, Duncan joined in helping her out. Together the pair ran the crow bar up and down the length of the sides and across the top until the boards covering the front of it fell away. A half-rotted straw spilled out, wet and stinking with a smell that wasn’t at all pleasant.

When the plant material that had obviously once been tried padding was removed, a large metal box far bigger than Tazrae was revealed. It looked like a far larger version of her Icebbox. “Is that an Icebox?” She asked, reaching for the latch and heaving its ‘door’ open.

Cool air wafted out of the thing, even as Duncan’s milky blue eyes steadied on the object as his Auristics flared. “It’s an Icebox indeed…. Somehow spelled to keep things cold, even frozen, if the owner wants.” He added, reaching out and running his hands over the thing, curious. “I’ve read about them pre-Valterrian. Everyone used to have them everywhere, with no need for ice to be crafted every few days to power them. See the complex runes on the inside? The glyphs? Its glyphing at its finest. I don’t know how it works, but its going to be very interesting seeing. And its working after all these years too. That’s amazing. You might as well haul it inside, Tazrae, and use it. “A real pre-Valterrian icebox instead of simply just a box holding ice to chill your food as the ice slowly melts. Incredible. I bet half the settlement will be here to see it by morning.” He cautioned, laughing, when Taz gave him a bit of a shove and together they began to move it awkwardly up onto the deck and into the gathering area. Taz paused there so she and Duncan could unload and remove the old ice box, decidedly donating it to the Communal Kitchen since they didn’t have one yet.

“I’d better start baking then… they’ll want fed when they come by and marvel at the miracle.” She said, her voice laced with good humor. Duncan was right. Word would spread and the Inn would be inundated with the curious.

“I’ll help.” The mage offered, knowing that word would spread quickly even if he stayed here. There were probably a dozen people if not more that witnessed Tazrae hauling a huge crate home from a foraging event. If nothing else, they’d be there to inquire what she was going to do with it, betting several of them had ideas already what a crate that size would be good for.

“Thanks.” She said, and began to gather ingredients.
