Arriving in Syka: Meeting the Founders

Syka Spring 13, 522AV

The sun was nearing high noon when Evalynn emerged from beneath the bowels of the boat. It kissed her skin with a warm touch, causing her to close her eyes and take it in. The one refreshing thing she had experienced on this vessel since they set sail. Otherwise, she was down underneath, sick to her stomach and having a hard time keeping her balance. But it was all worth the 30 gold she spent to get here.

"Lookin' better missy, glad ta see yer walkin' now."

A crewmate greeted her with a smile as he walked by, hauling along some thick ropes for later.

"We be nearin' land soon, best get yerself ready ta dock."

At that, Evalynn perked up and scurried to the nearest edge of the boat. She hadn't realized they were already so close to the land. From this distance, she could see the sandy beach and lush greenery in the back. It fit the bill of a jungle oasis and this made Evalynn all the more anxious with anticipation.

'This is exciting, a new beginning in a new place! And one where everything is just starting to grow!'

Her thoughts of future plans rushed through her head like a wave rolling over the coastal sands. She would sink her toes into the sands of the beach as she laid back under the sun and basked in the heat. Or maybe she would timidly explore the edges of the city, careful not to go into the jungle for she was not experienced enough. Her mind shifted to her hand crafting herself a home, sculpting it into what she was visualizing and bringing it to life like a potter would a slab of clay. Evalynn was so in her head, that she don't notice as the ship had already docked and began to settle in.

"Oh! Drat, I forgot to get my things!"

And by things, Evalynn mainly meant her small pack of common items and her father's dagger. It wasn't a lot, and by no means was any of it worth any value, but it was everything that she owned. After a few minutes, she followed the crowd from the docks and was hit with instant humidity. Her body began to perspirate rapidly and she had to take a few swipes at her forehead to keep the sweat from her eyes.

'From the blessings above, why is it so hot and humid!' She thought, pulling away the clothes that cling to her body. She felt as if she had been dipped in honey and thrown to the arctic. 'I need to get out of these clothes, even though they are the lightest clothes I could get l.'

Her thoughts once again had her lost before she was called out to by a man's voice. Startled a bit, she turned some to find a tall man, standing alone and gesturing for her to come over. He was older, looking to be late 50's to early 60's judging by his white hair. However, that wasn't the only thing to him, the rest of his body would probably put him in his 40's. He wore a white collared, button up and some shorts with bare feet mingling with the sand. He seemed so welcoming that she walked over as if she knew him and gave a polite hello.

"Well, hello. You look to be another new face coming to Syka. Let me welcome you, my name is Mathias, a founder of this city. It also seems you also met another founder, Captain James, upon the ship?"

Mathias guides Evalynn along the Swing Beach, allowing her to take in the sight with awe. He then began to speak again.

"If not, you will have another chance today to meet with him. But for now, you will be meeting with me and Randal."

Arriving in Syka: Meeting the Founders

Postby Evalynn Frostfawn on April 4th, 2022, 2:25 am

Evalynn was guided into the commons of the city. It wasn't as buzzing with life like a regular big city, but it still seemed really active. She took note of what she saw here while Mathias gave a quick rundown of the area. The founder explained that this was the main meeting area for their small city. He gestures to where the Storm Shelter was, the Banana Grove, gesturing to the roads that lead to the left and right of them and what would be found there. Every word he spoke, she took in with anticipation and a smile.

"Now, right here is Randal's place. He is in charge of the construction of the city, and can get pretty busy, but let's see if he is here today."

Mathias gave a smile and guided them up to Randal's door. He gave a knock and paused, listening closely to see if the building founder was inside. After a few minutes, he knocked once more and waited again. After this, Mathias turned to Evalynn and shook his head.

"It looks as though he is out right now. So, for now, you and I will have a meeting and then I'll send you out to find the others. Why don't we head to the Shrine, it's a most relaxing place to have a pleasant conversation."

Mathias smiled warmly and gestured forward, walking away from Randal's door. The two walked in silence for a while, allowing Evalynn a chance to take in the area more. The stories she had heard of Syka while she was trying to get here didn't exactly paint a proper picture in her head. She expected to see a large city, nestled deep into the jungle and surrounded by dangers. Instead, this was a small settlement situated on the edge of the jungle. It was slightly overgrown, with evidence that pathways were being made to different areas. The feeling was not some bustling city, but a place that felt relaxing but dangerous. Not to mention the overwhelming heat and humidity that no one decided to bring up while she was traveling. The settlement's basic attire was all about light clothes,if any, while you were in the city.

"Ah, here we are. This is the Shrine of Kihala, the Goddess of Life. It marks where she had first appeared at our city. Come, let's have a seat."

Evalynn watched Mathias sit before she soon followed suit, setting her pack down and settling in. Once settled, Mathias now asked her a series of questions to which she would answer, some of them were easy while some seemed a bit more difficult to find an answer for. Either way, she felt like she was doing okay since he didn't outright tell her to leave.

Arriving in Syka: Meeting the Founders

Postby Evalynn Frostfawn on April 6th, 2022, 10:16 pm

The conversation seems to last for hours, but it was a pleasant couple of hours. Evalynn learned a lot about Syka, and Mathias was able to fully understand what Evalynn had planned. She was here to grow through physical labor and experience, and her contribution to the community was to assist in any small task she could get. Though Mathias had a bit of doubt to her answer, he didn't seem the find it too bothersome. Instead, he sent her on a 'quest' to hunt down the other two founders and have a nice conversation with them. Once she was able to meet and greet them, then she would be able to come back to Mathias and talk about her stay in Syka.

"I will definitely hunt down the other founders. My stay in Syka is important to me, and I wish to grow with this community."

Evalynn beamed a smile as she picked up her pack and slung it on her back. With a small wave to Mathias, Evalynn turned on her heel and made her way back to the Commons. Mathias gave her a small hint on where each founder, and while he gave an exact location for Randal, she knew where the docks were instead. Walking her way past the swings, Evalynn paused a bit to remove her shoes and bury her toes into the sand. The soft feeling of the white sand brushing against her bare feet made shivers run up her body. It was a feeling she had never felt before, and one she immediately got hooked on.

A few minutes past and Evalynn had found her way wondering the docks in search for Captain James. It was apparent that he was here as the ship she had came in on was still docked, she just had to locate him. It seemed each person she would ask would end up pointing her in a different direction, sending her in circles over and over again. At one point, she got so frustrated she started cursing under her breath when once again she was told to head back aboard the ship and into the cargo area.

'Stupid directions, why can't anyone just tell me where the captain is. If they don't know, they should just say that!'

She trudged her way back up to the ship before she stopped. Could her eyes be deceiving her? Was the captain not on the ship, but instead walking down the beach towards the commons?! Evalynn took no chances and immediately game chase, running down the ramp and onto the docks to catch up to the man who looked just like the captain. Her chase was clumsy, bumping into people and hurriedly apologizing as she ran. Some people yelled at her to stop and apologize properly, but she just said sorry more as stopping meant she could lose sight of James.

"Captain! Captain James, wait! I need to discuss some things with you!"

James immediately stopped and turned a bit, raising a brow at a quickly approaching and winded Evalynn. What a spectacle she made just to get his attention, and an interesting second encounter. Evalynn huffed out a greeting before inhaling deeply and trying to compose herself in this heat. It wasn't easy, as her lungs was not use to humidity, but instead the bitter cold of the artic.

"Thank you for stopping, my name is Evalynn and I was tasked with meeting with you by Mathias. Is there anywhere you would like to talk?"

Arriving in Syka: Meeting the Founders

Postby Evalynn Frostfawn on April 11th, 2022, 8:07 pm

After explaining the situation to James about what Mathias had tasked her with, the two had decided to walk up and down the beach for their talk. James started with how he had already been watching her while they sailed on the ship, and took note of the times when she would jump in and help. There were also times when he set up his crew to test her, and while seasickness got in the way, he determined she was someone of use. Evalynn was a little surprised, she had only recently heard that James was the captain, but to find out that she was already being tested on the boat.

"So, you mean the the entire ship ride was a test? To see if I was worthy enough to live here? That sounds like a set up to the unwary, especially if they were like me or even worse when it came to seasickness."

The thought caused a bit of a chuckle to come from James and he just shook his head. Evalynn was a bit confused and raised a brow of curiosity as he explained his reasoning. Most of the people that boards his ship don't come to help the community. They think the area is a free space for them because it's not as developed as all the other cities. Some can be careless and have no desire to grow and participate in the settlement. The more that he explained, the more it made sense as to the captain being the first gate one would have to pass.

"So, you're saying that I have basically past your test while on the boat, and this conversation is me getting the results?"

Evalynn was relieved when James confirmed her question and proceeded to lead her back up the beach towards the Commons. The rest of the walk was pretty quiet as Evalynn was allowed to take in more scenery that she had seen before. It didn't matter how many times she would see it, it would still make her eyes sparkle in happiness. It wasn't until James announced where to find Randal when Evalynn came out of her daze. She thanked the captain and waved goodbye before setting off in the direction that James gave her. It took her a whole ten minutes before she found her way to a surf shop, said to be owned by Randal. It looked to be a well frequented area judging by the lingering individuals hanging around and chatting. A few people have her some glances and curious looks, but nothing that set off alarm bells inside her head while she made her way through. Another couple of minutes passed by before she realized, she didn't know who she was looking for. It never crossed her mind to ask for a description of the final founder, just that she would know out of instinct.

'Stupid girl, how are you expecting to know someone you've never met off of instinct!?'

She shook her head a bit before mustering up the courage to start asking around. It was something relatively new to her still, going on a hunt for someone she never knew or met. The only thing she ever hunted for was animals, and even then she wasn't as good with it. Either way, she went up to what looked to be a worker and tapped them on the shoulder.

"Excuse me, I'm looking for Randal and I was told he would be here? Do you know where he may be?"

Arriving in Syka: Meeting the Founders

Postby Evalynn Frostfawn on April 14th, 2022, 4:36 am

"Ah, yes, I think I just saw him walk around the building to help out someone. He should be back momentarily, or you could wait for him here." The woman smiled softly before she took notice of Evalynn's concerned look. "Oh, you're new aren't you? Well, keep your eye out for a gentleman with short, wavy black hair, a short beard, and most likely will be shirtless."

Evalynn nodded and took a mental note of the person she was looking for and began to wander around to find them. There weren't too many people around, so the search took only a few minutes until she spotted someone similar to who she was told about.

"Excuse me, are you Randal?" Evalynn's question caused the man to turn and, with a warm voice, answer with a yes. "Oh, good! You are the last founder I need to meet. Hello, my name is Evalynn and I was wanting to settle down here. Though my skills aren't great, I do have a large desire to learn and improve them through physical labor and intensive learning. I am hoping that I could get a job before home, hopefully either doing physical labor for others or studying herbology and making medical items."

A flood of words came out of Evalynn as she started repeating what she had told Mathias and James. It seemed to have brought a hidden smirk on Randal's face before he waved his hand and told her to stop. He explained that it seemed like she had a pretty good lineup for herself, however, talking about it is easier than actually doing it. Evalynn needed to prove that what she was telling him was something that she would follow through with. Randal gestured for Eva to follow as he walked over to a more secluded area to sit.

"Please explain to me how you would initiate this plan of yours? If your skills aren't as cultivated as everyone else's, just walking through the settlement can be dangerous." Randal adjusted himself onto the seat and leaned on the table to look at Eva. Once settled, she began to explain her process, or what she was planning on doing.

"Once approved to live here, I am first going to begin by asking other settlers if they need any help with labor. I'll try to keep it in safe areas while-" She was interrupted when Randal asked how she would know what areas were safe. "I could gather that information while looking for work, and if it is dangerous, I'll turn down the work or find someone with better skills than me to help."

"What if no one has any work for you? What will you do then?" Randal raised a brow. "Not everyone requires physical labor or in short supply of help. What plan have you thought about for this?"

Eva paused a bit to think before she answered. The solution would be to go into the shops and see who is hiring, but what if her skills don't match up? Would anyone really accept her? And then she had to think about just how much popularity she wanted to bring to herself since she is supposed to be laying low. She took a very long pause before she answered.

"Well, if I can do community work, I will most likely focus on becoming an apprentice and growing my skills. That is unfortunately the only other opinion I can think of to help with the community at my current skill set."

Evalynn watched as Randal took in her answer and stewed on it. It made her anxious as they sat there in silence, and her hand started to play with her hair as she waited. What felt like an eternity finally ended when Randal broke the silence and responded to what she had said.

"You seem to have clear views of your future here, Evalynn. I wouldn't mind allowing you to settle down here, but just be mindful that we all are watching you and making sure you grow in a way that will help out Syka."

Randal offered his hand out to Eva and she smiled in happiness as she accepted his hand and firmly shook it. Randal chuckled and began to talk a bit about Syka before instructing her to find Mathias and arrange for a plot of land to live on. The excited Evalynn nodded and stood, thanking Randal happily before scurrying off to the shrine. By the time she reached it, the sun was nearly setting and the sky was bathed in an orange glow. A bit of worry spread over Evalynn as she wondered where she would sleep tonight if she hadn't even started building a house. But those worries washed away a bit when she spotted Mathias, who smiled and waved her over.

"You look as though you've had a busy day." He seemed to speak much softer and started walking away from the shrine and to the Commons. "And you radiate as if you've gotten some good news. In that case, why don't we have you stay in the inn just southeast of the docks and we can discuss your housing tomorrow. Sounds good?"

Eva nodded, suddenly feeling as though bags of flour were weighing on her shoulders. She had been running around all day, it's no wonder her body was about to shut down. Mathias smiled gently and gave brief, but clear instructions on where to go to get to the inn. It wasn't too far from where he lived, but since he wasn't heading straight home, he was unable to escort her to the inn. This was okay for Eva, it gave her the opportunity to explore more of the beach and not feel rushed. She thanked Mathias for he experience she had and waved goodbye before making her way to the inn.

The Fates Have Spoken
Here is your thread grade!

Evalynn-

Observation +5, Socialization +5, Logic +2, Interrogation +2, Planning +3, Rhetoric +3

Syka: The Syka Bay & Docks Location, Syka: Hot & Humid, Captain James Chaliva: Appearance & Mannerism, James: Tested Evalynn, Mathias: Appearance & Mannerism, Randal Zor: Location Of His Residence, Shrine of Kihala: Location, Kihala: Goddess of Life, Syka Commons: Location & Layout, Swing Beach: Location, Randal Zor: Appearance & Mannerism

Moderator Note: Randal’s home and most of the houses in Syka either have no doors at all or just have the swinging variety that can be latched in a storm. So no knocking on most of them… the usual is to knock on the frame and walk in. Nice little intro thread!

As always PM me if you have issues.
