The new mother was roasting alive. She didn’t know what was going on with her blood and what Shiress called her baby body instincts, but she was dying of the heat. She’d tried to take a swim, a shower, and even had tried altering the air around her to cool the humidity and temperature using Reimancy. It seemed like such a frivolous notion, using her djed for her own comfort, but there was nothing else she could think of to do. Taz needed relief and she needed it now.

That last bit helped a small amount, but not enough to bring her any comfort. Khari was ten days old now, and a little person all in her own right. But she definitely wasn’t overly warm. The baby barely wore clothing and when she did it was just to protect against mosquitos and fly bites when Tazrae was running low on insect repellent.

The other problem Tazrae had was that the Ixam hatchlings were bored and driving her nuts. She must have had a good collection of a dozen by now, most of which were Bree’s babies unless she misjudged their colorings. Well, there were one or two that were golden or varieties of gold, so Taz had to say Sunny had some in there as well. The little albino male was curled up at her feet and seeing his bright white hide gave her an idea. There was one thing she missed about Riverfall at this sort of time of year. She missed snow… bright beautiful white snow the color of the little albino’s hide.

Taz wondered, as she gently rocked Khari on her shoulder, if she could as a Reimancer with air and water, create snow. Concentrating, she extruded Res, sent it spinning up, and tried to figure out how one exactly made snow. Did she cool the air and run water through it? Did she try and form snowflakes already whole? Taz thought the latter might work easier than the former and she pictured how she’d seen snow… delicately falling flakes interlocking in a thousand million different patterns.

She tried visualizing this, locking her will into the Res and crafting snow from what she’d studied melting on her palm. The Res bucked and undulated, trying to form what she’d seen and understood snow to be, but it was confusing. How does one get tiny beautiful flakes, all individual and all flying around like snow? Taz had a hard time wrapping her brain around the idea and had to back off when the Res formed something that was cold and wet and looked nothing like snow.

The Innkeeper should have been at the Inn busy, but the day before, she’d made enough food to cover the whole day today, leaving Jaelis in charge to do the serving if anyone needed any food. Her guest rooms were empty at the moment, and she was grateful for that because it gave her free time. Free time, however, made her restless and anxious so she had to do something to get the hatchlings to leave her alone and keep Khari entertained enough to actually go down for a nap. That way, her mother might actually get a chance to nap as well.

Taz couldn’t remember the last time she’d slept at all… not a night, not even a four-bell nap in the afternoon.

She might be overreaching. The snow might be above what she could do. But the effort of it distracted her as she rose from her seat, gently dislodging the albino hatchling as she tried again. Rather than start out complex, she backed off to something simpler. Ice. By the Gods, as hot as she was couldn’t she just make ice?

Taz extruded a bit of Res again, letting it float up in her signature sunset coloring and swirl in a ball above her palm. She grabbed ahold of her will and reinforced the Res to be as the ice was.. cold hard frozen water. The ball formed instantly, swirling above her palm under the force of her desire. The ice ball held its shape nicely as Taz let it slowly sink down and rest in her palm. Then she swung her arm back, whistled sharply, and sent it flying. Half the pack of hatchling Ixam were after it in a heartbeat, instinctually chasing anything that seemingly ran from them.

Meanwhile, Khari squawked with infant indignation at the abrupt motion of her mother hurling an ice ball for the pack of hatchlings.

[Garden Beach] A Snowstorm In The Jungle

The bard soothed Khari’s squeaky outrage by creating another ice ball and gently tapping her on the nose with it. Then Tazrae shivered and exaggerated the word ‘burrrrrr’ making the baby girl grin toothlessly. Khari’s eyes went wide, their golden orbs luminous, as she made a vague grab for the ice ball. Tazrae kept it just out of her reach, her heart melting. If someone would have told her that such a small little creature could completely and utterly change her whole world, Taz would have flat-out denied that such a thing could happen. But it did and it had, and for some reason with her daughter in her arms, the sadness and shadows that chased her daily seemed to be banished away.

That was until a sharp nip brought her attention back to her surroundings and not to the baby in her arms. She was encircled by hatchlings, all of which were staring at her with their tails trashing back and forth in anticipation. She dropped her hand and their gazes followed her motion. That’s when she realized they were staring at the ice ball in her hand. Taz leaned back, wound up, and threw the ice ball out across the beach. The little creatures darted after it, all wrestling for position, biting at one another, and tumbling into and out of the way of the front runners.

Tazrae couldn’t help herself. She laughed; a bright musical sound unscathed by the darkness of the immediate past. Then she moved forward with her daughter tucked neatly into the crook of her left arm. Bare feet digging into warm sand, Taz followed the pack of hatchlings. Holding her right arm out, she tapped her inner well and drew power from the deep rich pool of magic. Djed surged upwards and became Res as it transmuted itself into her chosen formula.

She sprayed what looked like icy rain all about her, hardening the substance that was transmuting as it was forming to her will, into what looked like sheets of ice. She built mountains of it, calling on the water and air magic she could utilize, pooling the thick ice into glaciers with smooth sides. The mounds formed all around her as she circled, feeling the exquisite pull of djed finally being used after being neatly stored up in lockdown for the last year. She made the mountains higher, their sides glass, lofting into the air with big flat tops.

[Garden Beach] A Snowstorm In The Jungle

The hatchlings immediately switched games as the mistress of Garden Beach built mountains of ice for them to try and scramble up, sliding over each other, skittering for traction on the all but impossible surface. The air was hot, so it took considerable concentration and djed for Tazrae to keep her icy obstacle course solid and functional as the hatchlings climbed and slid, one reaching the very top and hissing in victory as he pushed the others off who tried to take his spot.

Taz realized it was the albino pink-eyed hatchling and laughed. “I name you King Frost,” She said, laughing at the hatchlings playing the game of king of the mountain. More of the wild ones came out of the jungle, joining in with her tame ones as the game got more serious. Taz was laughing, laughing so hard, in a way she hadn’t in a whole year. Even Khari was watching wide-eyed with amusement as baby Ixam slipped and slid and hissed at the ice. One even got so frustrated it started biting at the slick surface, gnawing its teeth in fury to try and kill the slippery stuff.

A little purple female nudged her and Taz cupped her hand, starting to form another ice ball, but instead restructured her visualization so she had a snowball hard packed in her hand in a moment instead. She threw the snowball and the little hatchling chased after it. Still laughing, almost in tears from the antics of the baby Ixam, Taz turned and settled Khari in her bassinet. She wrapped the baby tightly which was always a comfort to her little form, and made sure the shade was pulled up over the little basket. Then she turned, lifted both hands, and having finally got it into her brain what it felt like to make water rain down on something, invoked the water from her palms. She sprayed the area while at the same time getting a firm hold on the air and dropping the temperature significantly in front of her where the ice obstacle course and mountain rose out of the sand.

Taz would have never attempted the snow in the jungle because it would have killed everything green and living within sight. But she figured the ice on the sand would have no negative effect as she kept a firm hold on the air temperature right inside the main ice complex and stepped forward. Frost was still holding his own at the top of the mountain, throwing off those getting close to getting to the top. Laughing, Taz glanced at the bassinet, checking on her daughter, then threw her attention at the pack of hatchlings scrambling up the ice mountain, all but laughing themselves.

She ran towards them, forming snowballs with her will as she did so. Launching one after another – some harder and some wetter than others – she tried to hit the hatchlings to assist Frost in keeping his leadership role at the top. She kept forming the snowballs, launching them at the hatchlings, and at the same time dampening the surface of the ice, making it even more slippery for the hatchlings. The whole lot of them were in a mad dash of energy that reminded her of some sort of hybrid made-up game of King of the Mountain combined with a snowball fight.

[Garden Beach] A Snowstorm In The Jungle

What was eerie though was that a deep purple female seemed to have organized the mob trying for the top because she had flankers that were keeping the path clear for her while some of the bigger ones pushed from behind. Taz changed tactics and started targeting her for snowballs. The purple female turned and seemingly barked orders to some of the mob that wasn’t doing much but running around, and they turned on Tazrae and launched at her.

With a squeal, Taz backed up, redoubled her snowball fire, and started pegging those individuals with the snowballs. They tore at them, snapping them from the air, and taking the fire, giving the purple female just enough time to hit the top of the mountain, grapple with Frost, and launch him from the lofty peak. Frost slid all the way down on his rump, hissing his displeasure the whole time, while the purple female did a sort of happy dance at the top that included a circle of the whole rim. Taz was fairly sure that was a victory lap if she’d ever seen one.

Then, surprising her more, the purple female called to those that had helped her, and all of them piled on top of the little ice mountain together. Taz, meanwhile, was juggling making snowballs, keeping the air cold, and convincing the ice to remain frozen as she watched the display. Sweat was breaking out all over on her, and she could feel the strain on her djed as she pulled more and more, altering the ambient temperature to hold onto the ice longer. Still, the cooperative play on top of the ice mountain fascinated her. That told her that the female was sharing tasks, showing leadership, and rewarding behavior she deemed proper.

Taz was a little floored by that… even as the albino male came scurrying over to her to hide behind her legs as she let the last of her snowballs fly. She quickly bent, reached behind her, and gave him a reassuring pat. Scratching his neck and along his spine, the little lizard growled with pleasure and then stuck close to her. It didn’t help things that he was small, smaller than the purple and all those he had bravely defended the mountain from. And he was clever… getting past all of them to get to the top and hold it for a while.

“You are a clever creature… you did so good getting to the top. You were the first, and you did it alone, without help. You should be proud!” Tazrae whispered, offering him a grin as she gestured at the purple female. “She had to recruit an army to usurp you.” She said, giving his jawline one last scratch.

[Garden Beach] A Snowstorm In The Jungle

Postby Tazrae on November 13th, 2022, 2:28 pm

Feeling the strain on her djed, and the start of a headache, Taz figured it was more than enough time to start to wrap up the winter games she’d started, possibly foolishly, in the tropics. She rose to her feet, walked over to check on Khari, and found her daughter asleep. Turning back to study the snowscape she’d created, Taz reached out with her power, locked wills with her creation, and slowly turned the ice into soft fluffy snow. She concentrated on altering the density, the consistency, and keeping a firm grip in her mind on how snow felt in comparison to the rock-solid hardness of ice.

As the ice field in front of her started to soften, turn fluffy, and blow away on the wind – melting as it went – Taz could feel the last of her easily reached djed tapping out. Her well went deeper, much deeper, but there was the surface djed she utilized since becoming a mage that was easy to access and quick to respond to her call.

The Mulgon had told her that her surface djed would be bigger, easier to access and grow as she utilized it more and more. He had encouraged her to mix magic with her everyday life, doing things like firedancing or cooling herself on the hottest of days. There was no need, he felt, for mages to be uncomfortable when The Gods gifted them with the ability and responsibility to alter the world around them to suit their needs.

Taz couldn’t disagree. And as her little ice mountain range began to soften to more like snow mounds, the Ixam stopped losing stability and most of them ended up sunk neck deep into the snow that Taz transmuted the ice into. They loved it, of course, frolicking in and out of the snow, tails lashing, claws slashing, wrestling, and enjoying their little pack mentality. Tazrae laughed again, unable to help herself, as some of them popped up out of the snow after rooting around beneath the piles, all covered with white. The warm tropical wind soon had the snow blowing, mostly up into the jungle where it changed to water droplets before it could even fall to the ground or coat the plants. Taz couldn’t and wouldn’t force it to hold its shape out of her immediate sight or close range.

It was just too hard on her djedpool. But she’d handled a lot of snow, and a lot of ice and gave the hatchlings a bit of fun. So she decided enough was enough, completely released the magic, and bent down to pick up the bassinet. She tucked it under her arm and turned to walk back up the beach to the Pavilion. She’d take to her bed, stretch out, and lay the bassinet beside her and see if she couldn’t nap. Fortunately, it was warm, the hatchlings were tired as well, and as she settled into sleep curled around the little portable baby basket, the hatchlings did the same.

Yawning, Taz hoped for at least a bell, maybe two… of good sleep.
