Having multiple Striders at your disposal made traversing the vastness of Cyphrus far easier than it would have been normally. Endrykas might not have been anywhere near Riverfall, but from the back of a Strider it was far closer than one would have expected. Kavala was truthfully shocked she'd been allowed to ride out of Riverfall with her newborn tucked in a baby pack nestled up against her breast. She had two remounts with her, one loaded with her own pavilion that she'd set up beside her family's huge one giving her privacy and time alone if she needed it. All three horses were striding at roughly seventy miles an hour, carrying her smoothly across the expanse of the grasslands.

Kavala knew it wouldn't be hard to find Endrykas. She went to its last known location and found the marker cairns that pointed the way. Following them would lead her to the city, though the closer she got the more the grass around the cities movements would be battered down or gone where the herds grazed. To someone trained on the Sea of Grass, finding Endrykas from Riverfall was as easy as following the stars in the sky in any of the cardinal directions.

Traveling with an infant wasn't easy though. Tasi was fussy at first, bouncing along until the striders started actually striding. Kavala had to shift her weight in the saddle, sit further back, ride taller, to carry him comfortably. She often looked over her shoulder too in order to make sure she wasn't followed. Kavala worried that she would be until the horses actually started into their special mileage eating gait. Then, of course, nothing but another strider could follow them.

Still, no Akalak came. No one seemed concerned she left Riverfall in the dead of night. No warrior's peeled off their watch and began to track her. Did they instinctively know she was just visiting family, or was there some timeline that she could be gone for before they brought her back? Sanctuary was in good hands while she was gone, that much was for sure, and so with foaling done and breeding done, the summer was just left to enjoy and decide how much how little needed to be done before winter set in. She had time for a visit, and time to relax at her Father's pavilion for a bit.

It took her four days to find the city. Four days in which she had a lot of time to think about what she was going to say to her parents and brothers, especially Vanator. There was four days riding, in which she hunted along the way, using her bolas to bring down a rabbit here and there in order to have meat to cook over the campfire at night. Bola training from horseback had been mandatory for her, as she was just as often mounted as she was walking. The same held true for her blowgun that took down a small turkey that she was able to dry strips of meat from to eat while they moved.

So when she rode into the city finally, Kavala was exhausted. The three striders in her presence seemed relieved as well. She threaded her way through the encampment to the Sapphire Clan's section and once there looked for the flags and markings of her father's pavilion. She halted her small herd at the pavilion, slipped from Kamsin's back, and started unloading Windstone without a word. Tasi was set up on his boucing frame in the shade while she, without a word to anyone, began unrolling her own pavilion and setting it up. It would take her a couple of hours to do, and once she was done, she planned to sleep a great while.

She needed rest and a chance to recharge. But first came the pavilion. Anyone in the Denusk encampment would clearly see her setting it up. Whether anyone would offer to help, Kavala didn't know or care. Privacy to her was first and foremost. Then, later, she could deal with her father and brothers.

[Denusk Pavilion] The Next Generation

Bolden walked beside his Strider as he approached the Pavilion with cautious steps. He offered water to the handsome stallion, stroking the sweaty neck and appreciating his strength for the millionth time.

Man and horse were both sweaty, exhausted and not a little edgy at being back home. Home? He'd left six years ago, the night his mother had died. He snorted like his horse at the stupid thought. They don't know me. I was 13 then and they certainly don't know me now!

A sudden alien fatigue washed over him and he looked for its source. There was only one person who had a peculiar mind reach with him--Kavala. The Konti sister. Out of his entire extended family, she was probably the only one that could stay his temper; if not that, then at least understand it best.

He searched the crowd with keen eyes and lit upon her slight frame. She looked thinner and utterly exhausted. Even her light hair seemed too tired to lift in the baking breeze. A chubby burbling baby bounced on the horse's back nearby and his eyes caught. Bolden's normally smug expression softened immediately into a half smile. Babies of any species always gave him a tug.

Nightwind farruped softly over the man's shoulder, nibbling stray curls that danced in the incessant wind. As second nature, he reached up an arm to put around the Strider's massive neck so they could share the moment.

"It's Kavala, and a new baby, my old friend." He said with surprise coloring his tone. His horse was probably the only creature that he could speak civilly to--excepting Kavala.

He frowned, noticing her tired struggle with the heavy damask that really needed at least two people to unroll it, but damned if she would ever ask for help! He'd always admired her quiet strength--but there was no way he'd admit that out loud.

Bolden strode towards her, his slim sandals soundless on the burning sands. Nightwind followed, matching his stride to the man's. The young Denusk's expression turned to a quick smirk. If anyone needed a hand physically and emotionally, it was his sister, right now. He stopped a couple paces from Kavala's turned back and called out to her in a light and mocking tone.

"Is my big sister getting too old to unroll a damask? A little bird like you needs a man to do the heavy lifting."

[Denusk Pavilion] The Next Generation

Postby Khiara on July 15th, 2011, 10:03 pm

Image

Khiara saw the herd of striders entering the city well before anyone else, mounted a top of Adelita and casually walking along the river with Vsenri in close tow. Even if the frostmarch couldn't keep up with the Strider once she got her legs under her, the stallion refused to be seperated from her. It had been made obvious when the vantha had attempted to take Adelita out during the summer, only to have Vsenri kick up such a fuss she thought he would break down the fence.

And so it was he became a riding companion. Whilst Khiara worried if they ran into trouble he wouldn't be able to keep up, she felt comforted that the great white stallion wanted to stay with her and Adelita. He had begun to act like a lead stallion, possessive of his females and headstrong. A small smile rose to her lips everytime he pranced in front of the golden strider. And to Adelita, Khiara chuckled. It was obvious the female played into Vsenri's show-ponying.

Sitting up higher in the yvas, Khiara watched the trio of horses as they thundered into the city. The rider was familiar, and ever so pale.

"Come on, lets go have a look then huh?" She said softly in vani to the horses. Whether Adelita understood the words or not, she did understand the gentle nudge toward home and the immediate change in Vsenri's footing. Running at a canter, the woman and her steeds drew back into the city gates and made for the coral. After dismounting, unsaddling and leading the horses inside, Khiara made her way back to the Saphirre Pavillion, soft sheer fabric of her knee length grey riding dress whispering against her legs and black riding boots creating little puffs of dust. Her hair was wrapped into an intricate braided chignon and a saphirre jeweled belt adorned her waist. As the family damask's came into view, the mysterious rider was visible. A warm smile broke out across the girls face and her violet eyes brightened.

"By the Goddess, Kavala?! What good dead have we done to allow Morwen to bless us with a visit fro-- oh!" The young brunette cut her greeting short to move towards the bouncing infant. A shock of white hair on deep blue skin was easy to catch the eye, and as Khiara reached him she noticed the scales and the gills. He was beautiful, and cooing softly as a pang of sadness swept over her, the young vantha scooped him out of the bouncer and rocked gently with the child laying in her arms. A small smile crossed her face as golden swirls overtook the violet in her eyes. It had been seasons, and still she wasn't with child. The young brunette knew there had to be something wrong. Even Vanator surely realized now something wasn't right inside. Swallowing the lump in her throat, Khiara placed a soft kiss on his tiny blue forehead before placing the infant back in his bouncer.

Turning back to the konti, Khiara walked towards her as Bolden offered to help his sister, in the most round about and cheeky way possible. Her smile widened and the violet in her eyes returned as she slapped Vanator's younger brother lightly on the arm.

"Bolden, you are a terrible sibling. Can't any of you Denusk just help without cracking some comment?" Laughing softly and calling him something light hearted in vani, the raven haired girl moved to take up helping Kavala with her damask. Her eyes met the womans with a slight question. There was something there, fleeting. Then it was gone. A private woman with a large heart, Khiara knew better than to pry. Back in Endrykas, unspoken arrival and babe in tow...If Kavala wanted to have a quiet chat with her foriegn sister-in-law, then the vantha knew she would ask. They weren't close, in fact they were more strangers than anything, but she was family, and Khiara owed the woman Vsenri's life. In a heartbeat she would do anything for the konti.

[Denusk Pavilion] The Next Generation

News traveled faster through Endrykas than a strider through the grass. No sooner had the konti Denusk dropped her belongings than word of Kavala's return spread through the clan, and into the pavilions. Vanator was inspecting a bull zibri from the Emerald clan's herds. The Denusk pavilion's bull had broken its leg in a hole, and the aged animal would not heal whole enough to keep up with the small herd. Eachann had charged his heir with selecting a suitable replacement.

Vanator was negotiating a price with the Emerald clansman when he heard his name called out over the lowing of the zibri herd. He turned to look over the animals towards the bannered pavilions. Jinna, his cousin, came running through the camps, calling to him with a sense of urgency in her voice. Van excused himself, offering to return to purchase the bull, and ran to meet Jinna. The teenager's face was red and she was out of breath, but a grin stretched from one ear to another.

"Kavala is here!"
She exclaimed after catching her breath, her hands making desperate gestures. Vanator looked at her with confusion, then with comprehension. He patted the girl on the shoulder and smiled. "Thanks Jin, I will be right there."

JInna turned and disappeared again as she ran back towards the Denusk tents. Vanator took a slower pace, both anxious and excited to see his sister again. As he wove his way through the pavilions, he recalled their relationship since she returned to Cyphrus almost three years ago. Their reunion had been marred by an argument over his new wife Kashik. Van also discovered that Kavala had endured many difficult things, things that had changed her. The bizarre events at Sanctuary the following days brought them together to some extent, But Van still mourned the distance that had grown between them. He had heard from Kav from time to time, the latest the letter letting him know that she had delivered twins to a kelvic named Dhanya, twins that he had fathered.

First Bolden returns after six years, a ten day later, Kavala shows up after three years gone. Was there some grand design unfolding? With a deep breath, Vanator neared the Denusk camp, ready to greet his sister.

[Denusk Pavilion] The Next Generation

Postby Kavala on July 20th, 2011, 4:46 pm

ImageAt the sound of that voice, Kavala froze. The richness of it was long missing from her life so long that most of the family had assumed they'd never hear it again. Kavala released her burden of pavilion cloth and straightened. Her eyes scanned the area until they fell upon the tall form striding forward, cocky as ever, a half grin on his rough shaven face. He looked older, more worn, and there was an edge to him that was missing when she'd last seen her playboy younger brother.

But then, time changed all people. Always.

She was different too. Her hair was longer and gone was the girlish Konti that only promised to be a beauty if certain parts of her ever grew and curved out. Smooth skin graced with scales had been replaced by brutal scars that etched up and down her arms, across her neck, and even out onto her face. They were subtle, almost a trick of light, but Bolden could see them as she stood directly in the sun, having chosen a good solid spot to erect her pavilion.

Kavala's eyes were haunted, cautious, and only lightly tinged with the delight that would have gushed forth from them like laughter always had her lips like Bolden was used too. She smiled, then, blinked, and rushed him.

Just like old times, Kavala threw herself into her little brother's arms and held onto him like she was hugging him for either the first or last time. That too was a different experience. Kavala used to be soft, fragile, all but ethereal. That too was gone. The woman that hugged him was hard, lean, and corded with muscles that allowed her to move like she knew how to use each and every one of them. She held the hug long after it was remotely proper then stepped back and had a better look at him. The konti then smiled, shook her head, and laughed. "You're in the best health of your life. And here we thought you'd long ended up at the bottom of a glassbeak's belly. You really need to learn to pick up a pen and write a person once in a while." She scolded playfully.... then stepped away with a parting kiss to both his cheeks as Khiara joined them.

"You look good, sister. How's your stallion doing? I hope he had no soreness or limp after his healing." She said. "That's my son, Tasival. He's part of the reason I'm here. I was hoping father or Vanator would tie him into the web even though hes not... well even though hes Akontak." She knew her father would have done it if she'd presented him with a baby Konti girl, but this young man was unknown. Kavala shifted uncomfortably and ran her hand through her hair, accidentally flashing the silver bracelet on her arm that had no way to come off without being cut off. It resembled a manacle and was the sign of a Nakivak of Riverfall by its design, the women the Akalak kept for breeding purposes and rarely released from their contracts until their bodies were worn from the process or their difficult births set them free through death.

Kavala dropped her voice and whispered to Khiara. "That shrew that Vanator calls 'first wife' isn't around here anywhere is she? I brought several throwing knives with her name on them if she gives me any grief." Kavala said, slightly annoyed, still glancing around until she spotted Vanator walking up as well. She gave Khiara one last look, and went back to helping her unroll the heavy fabric.

"Permission to pitch my pavilion next to the Denusk's main one for a few days? " She asked her oldest brother, though she didn't stop unrolling the material or laying out the pegs. Personal pavilions were a great deal smaller, having only two rooms, and were decidedly easier to set up than the Denusk monstrosity most of the family lived in.

Kavala glanced at Tasi, checking him carefully, then glanced around again. To Bolden, it would be clear as day she was on watch for danger or possibly men in pursuit. Everyone in Endrykas knew what a Nakivak was and what happened if one fled Riverfall. Kavala must have been there by permission or was otherwise granted permission for the visit.

His smile rivaled the noon sun as he enveloped his favorite sister in a large hug while giving a saucy wink to the baby. Gods, he'd missed her so much more than he'd realized!

'This might not have happened to her if I'd stayed.' Bold worked to keep the anguish from his expression. He'd felt some regret at his absence at first, but now it was a thousand fold with guilt eating away at him. The young man pushed it down to chew on later.

The young Denusk toyed with the idea of swinging her up in a circle as he used to, but changed his mind when he saw the marks. His eyes turned honey colored as he scrutinized her closely. He purposely kept his smile light-hearted and pretend pleaded as of old,

"Aaw Kav don't scold your favorite brother! You'll break my innocent heart!" The young man teased her, trying to get her to smile. "You know I missed you every chime."

She had scars everywhere and so...lean and wary. And a baby! What's happened to my delicate and sweet natured sister? The lovely, happy, cheerful sister he'd always looked up to and adored?

As they exchanged the warm hug and double cheek greeting, his amber eyes caught and held onto the silver Nakivak bracelet, asking her a silent question he knew she couldn't answer in public.

"Still beautiful as always Kavala." He nipped at her long hair with a playful hand, as he used to do when just a baby. Bolden saw the haunted look in her eyes and wanted to erase it forever.

"You've gotten shorter!" Bold said playfully. His large hands automatically helped her with the rug, practically taking it over.

Bolden kept on a polite smile with Khiara as they played the family's 'we're in public, have dignity' game. His amber eyes flecked gold the moment she touched his arm. His skin wanted to ripple in irritation, much like the Strider's did that stood at his shoulder.

"Be well Sister in Law." He said quietly, remembering Kavala's etiquette.

He nodded briefly at Khiara and Vanator, quickly assuming the reluctant role of duty to his family.

Bolden walked forward to clasp his brother's arm in greeting and said quietly, "Vanator."

While the rest greeted each other, he went to Tasival. Nightwind nickered softly and snuffled the baby's hair with amazing gentleness. Bold held out his pinky finger for the baby to grasp, and his expression melted with fondness for the child. "How you doing little man?"

He frowned when Khiara reached for the baby and he stepped back quickly. Bolden and Nightwind walked to where Kavala and Vanator stood, trying to keep Family Duty in mind.

[Denusk Pavilion] The Next Generation

Postby Vanator on August 8th, 2011, 12:48 pm

Strolling into the Denusk encampment, Vanator composed himself. Seeing Kavala as he approached, he gave her a smile at her rhetorical request. Apparently she, like Bolden, was not comfortable sharing the family's main pavilion. "Of course sister." That was the extent of their greeting after a year. No hugs, handshakes or beaming smiles and notions of pining for the other. The Konti went back to setting up her tent. Van's eyes darted to Bolden. "Brother." His voice was edged with a curious inflection at the word. It had been days since he and Bold had engaged in their revealing conversation, the repercussions of that discussion still fresh. His eyes shifted to Khiara, whom he greeted with a slight smile. Finally, his gaze fell to the bouncer, and the blue-skinned child reclining in it.

A tightness gripped Vanator's gut as he looked over at his sister as she adeptly assembled her tent with Bolden's help. Again, he caught a glimpse of the silver manacle on her wrist, or that is how he saw the piece of jewelry. Since he had visited Riverfall the past Summer, Vanator had naively tried to ignore the fact that his little sister was a Nakivak. The thought of Kavala forced to serve as a broodmare for some Akalak crushed him and inspired a quiet hatred of the residents of Riverfall. The drykas never considered that Kavala may have loved the Akalak she was paired with. To him, it was ironic. She was rescued from slavery to become one anyway. The brother did possess a begrudged gratitude to the Akalaks for saving Kavala, for surely what she was suffering, and had been doomed to endure, was far worse than the rather benevolent life she was given in Riverfall. But that fact persisted, that she was forcefully indebted to the Akalak. Which stirred a curious question, how did she get out of Riverfall with one of their precious offspring. A sudden protective urge arose within Vanator, and he wondered if he should warn his kindred that a contingent of Akalak warriors may arrive to retrieve the errant Nakivak and her son.

Akontak. He knew what the child was. He had met one, Raiha, the same day he had met with Kavala and Akela. Raiha was beautiful, and Vanator admitted as he approached the infant, so was Kavala's child. Beautiful and alien, and his nephew nevertheless. The child still had drykas blood, and Van would not deny the child simply because he resembled his father.

"I see you have brought someone with you Kav." He reached down to take the baby in his arms. He must have been close in age to his own son, and a touch of regret tugged at his heart. Their sons would not be raised together under the Denusk banner. The child squirmed until Van held him snugly in his strong arms, emitting a small, curious sound as he looked up into his uncle's eyes. "He is a strong boy." He added, a grin again crossing his face as the child looked up at him. His glance again darted to Khiara. He knew the vanthan fretted over the fact that she had not borne her husband a child yet, and wondered how seeing Kavala's baby made her feel. He gave her a reassuring smile, also knowing the tension that had developed between his brother and his second wife.

Setting the child back into his bouncer ans standing to his feet, Vanator joined the others in setting up Kavala's small pavilion. There was many things still untold between the children of Eachann. The next few days would prove to be most interesting.

"Kav, what brings you here? Now...and what is your son's name?" Van stopped short of asking how she left Riverfall without a posse of Akalak in pursuit.

[Denusk Pavilion] The Next Generation

Postby Kavala on August 8th, 2011, 6:06 pm

ImageKavala would have gladly moved into the main pavilion had she known Kashik was elsewhere and probably likely to be so for the extent of her stay. Of course, knowing she'd taken herself off with a new baby (probably back to her mother's skirttails) would have just amused Kavala and elicited venomous remarks to Vanator, so it was better that Kavala assumed the resident pit viper was at home and she and her son were safer in their own pavilion.

Really, Vanator should have chosen his wives better if he wanted his sisters to come stay that often.

Kavala smiled at Bolden, glad for the help, and noticed right away that rather than offer his aid, Vanator walked over to inspect her son who was happily entertaining himself on the bouncer in the shade of the primary pavilion. She didn't bat an eyelash when Van picked Tasival up. No, she trusted her brother completely just as she didn't mind Khiara handling the babe either. "That's Tasival. He was born on the 22nd. I brought him home to meet his kin and be tied into the web if father is willing to do so." For an Akontak, that was, though she left the words unsaid. "His father hasn't even been to visit since well before the birth so I figured if he wanted a family, he really needed to meet the Denusks. One never knows what the future holds, so I wanted him to at least have a family if something happens to me. He's got all his fingers and toes and is more endowed than Bolden ever was, so I'll save you the trouble of checking." Kavala said with a smile, then shot Bolden a grin over her shoulder. They kept working. Setting up a pavilion like Kavala's took little time when more than one person was at it.

"I don't know how long I can stay or if they sent anyone to bring me back, so just a word of warning if a party of Akalak outriders show up. Don't start anything with them. I didn't exactly ask permission to come, and I don't want any bloodshed on my hands.. if they can even find Endrykas. I possibly have two seasons respite from my duties there after his birth, so I might just be left alone. "
She said, being forthright to her brother. He needed to know these things since Kavala had yet to see Eachaan.

The babe seemed unafraid of Vanator and looked his fill at his uncle before reaching out and grabbing blond hair and laughing. He coughed once, frowned, then laughed again touching various things on Vanator's body - jewelry and clothing. It was clear he couldn't see really well yet, but the shadows and light and sounds of Van's voice obviously had Tasi curious and the boy wasn't shy about touching what caught his attention. He only fussed a bit when Vanator put him down.

"Thanks..." She said of the two men when they got the pavilion all pitched and secured against wind and stray animals. Carefully, Kavala began unloading some basic necessities from her wagon - bedroll, food, toys for the infant - and stocked the back room of her pavilion. Then, when they were all but done, she settled outside, under the shade, with Tasi in front of the Denusks' communal campfire.

"It was a longer ride than I thought. I hate bringing a wagon, but I need to bring some puppies back for Raiha and I didn't think they'd go easily tied to a strider's yvas." Kavala said, yawning and stretching. "Is there anything to eat around here?" She asked hopefully, hungry beyond belief after all the travel and just fresh after the birth.

[Denusk Pavilion] The Next Generation

Bolden shoved the tent stake into the ground with a grunt and a final heel push. He laughed heartily at Kavala's comment, and corrected her,

"Wrong brother big sister-you meant to say Vanator! That's why he needs more than one wife, coz he's only got half as much as I do!"

They worked to set up the last support beam in the tent and finally stood back in satisfaction. It felt good to be working as a family again and Bold beamed at his siblings.

The mention of Akalak outriders wiped the smile off the face of the young Denusk and his expression turned stormy. He was furious at the thought of his sister's blatant captivity, mentioned as casually as any pet on a leash. Unknowingly, his frown deepened into an exact duplicate of Vanator's own expression.

Then Tasival came into his line of sight, and his eyes softened immediately. He was as proud of the baby as if it were his own. In a sense Tasi was-they were of the same blood weren't they?

"You better let old man Van babysit so he doesn't throw out his back sis. I'll do the heavy lifting." He joked, giving her long hair a quick tug, like he'd never been gone.

Now that he was older, and just 'cause he could, Bold took the stock from Kavala's hands and brought them in himself. Each time she'd go to lift a bundle, box or bag, he'd smirk and take it out of her hands. He figured he had the muscle, he was at least good for hauling stuff and wouldn't let her do more than reach for the items before he grabbed the parcels from her sight and placed them inside.

"Speaking of a strider's yvas, I got a hare this morning. I'll skin it if Van plays good little wife and cooks it."

Bold chuckled, walking over to Nightwind to remove the carcass. He gave the stallion an affectionate slap on the neck and motioned for him to go graze. He did his best to keep things light and joking but the underlying tension kept building.

He moved off to the side near an errant bit of pool and eviscerated the animal. He made a clean vertical cut from arse to throat, to bleed it. Bold made a second cut to separate the skin from the tissue, peeling it back neatly. He gutted it, rinsed it in the water and wrapped up the offal for later use. Once he'd washed his hands, he returned with a nicely dressed hare, ready for cooking.

"Puppies? Who doesn't love puppies?" Bolden grinned like a boy and held up the fresh offal. "I got some left overs if they're hungry."

Bold sat down near Tasi, thoroughly enchanted by the little baby. He took out a fist-sized piece of boiled zibri vertebra for the boy to gnaw on. No Denusk, male or female, grew up without a Binky!

"There ya go little man. You'll be growing in teeth soon. This will put some hair on your chest!"

He looked down fondly at the newest Denusk and smiled. Something tender touched his heart and he suddenly knew what it was. After a half dozen years, Bolden was finally back with his family.

Vanator took in Kavala's words, concealing the mix of emotions that washed over him. She had a baby, by an Akalak. That was difficult to swallow, though the child was beautiful, it was so..different. The drykas honestly did not know how their father would feel about tying the akontak to the Web. Eachaan had all but denounced Pygmy's twins, though they were Vanator's own children. The Ankal's position on such matters seemed...inconsistent. Vanator, however, saw Tasival as his sister's son, his own nephew with the blood of a drykas Ankal flowing in his veins. He was family, and if the akalak would not provide the child with a family, Vanator would ensure that the Denusks did.

Kavala confirmed his own concern over akalak coming for her. It would prove to be a politically sticky situation. The mere thought of turning his own sister over to the men of Riverfall like a runaway slave rent his heart and stirred an angry flame in his gut. He did not know if he could do it. Van silently prayed to the gods that they did not come. In the end, he knew Kavala would return, honoring her debt to the blue warriors. She was back, after three years, his beloved sister. He did not want her to leave again. Things were different between them, but, with the konti here, maybe they could hash things out.

With the three siblings working together, Kavala's pavilion went up quickly and smoothly, her supplies stashed away. Vanator had fallen back in the habit of ignoring Bolden's persistent and abrasive taunting, enduring several snide remarks before picking up a tent peg and flinging it at the younger male Denusk. "Big words from a boy who still spills his seed on the ground...I have two wombs to hold the fruit of my loins!" He tossed a broad, wry grin at Bolden as well. "And I will cook your scrawny hare. If I recall, the only two ways you know how to cook meat are overdown and blackened."

Vanator placed Bolden's rabbit on a spit over the fire, sitting next to Kavala. Khiara slipped into the pavilion, Vanator assumed to bring out some other dishes to accompany the roasted hare. Turning back to Kavala, Van asked after their sister. "How is Akela, why did she not come as well?" Then, he added an inquiry about the only other akontak he had ever met. "And How is Raiha? She is a most interesting young woman."
