Basic Information

Race: Human, Drykas
Birthday & Age : Winter 474 AV, 35 years old
Gender: Male

Physical Description
Vanator stands 5'10" and weighs 180lbs. Like most Drykas males, Vanator's frame consists of lean muscles, But Vanator boasts exceptionally strong shoulders. His windmark drapes across his upper back and shoulders in a pattern of sharp curves. He sports long light brown hair that falls just past his shoulders. During the summer natural streaks of blonde appear. A thin braid typically hangs from either side of his face, strung with a collection of small silver and bronze bands. He prefers his hair loose, but will pull it back and band it near the end with a leather strap if necessary. His skin is a light tan, bearing just a hint of golden warmth. His eyes are a deep brown, flecked with gold. His strong jaw is kept clean shaven, or thinly stubbled. His face is rather youthful-looking for his age. Vanator walks with the prideful stride of the Ankal's son, and his movements are puproseful.

Character Concept
Vanator is an energetic and passionate man. He fiercely loves his family, his people and his land, and he prides himself on protecting them all. He has learned the management of the Pavilion from his father, as well as webbing, as he will someday take the place of his father as Ankal of the Denusk Pavilion. He has been known to stand against his father when in disagreement, but the two men always reconcile.

Though Vanator fulfills his roles within the Pavilion, his true love is to roam the plains. Hunting with his families dogs or cats, or just running with his Strider Backlash (named for his ability to make incredibly sudden stops and tight turns). He often leads raiding parties, or hunts down trespassers, hunters and poachers daring enough to enter the grasslands. Such men find no mercy from Vanator, who has earned a reputation as a bloody fighter.

He and his family has suffered many losses, and the toll of those on Vanator can be seen in his cynical wit and frequent mood swings. But anyone in the Pavilion will tell you he is fair and honorable Drykas.

Character History
Vanator is the only son and heir of Eachann, the Ankal of the Denusk Pavilion of the Sapphire clan, by his first wife, Nadra. As a boy, he was healthy and strong spirited, all signs that the Pavilion was blessed. He was chosen by a Cyphrus Strider at a late age, but bonded quickly to the strong-willed animal. He was competitive, which perpetually irked him since his younger Konti half-sister, Akela, could almost always best him in a fight. The two were like brothers, brawling, racing and getting into trouble together. A lover of celebrations, roaming the grasslands and hunting, his parents began to pressure him to find a good wife and and bear an heir of his own. At the age of 25, Vanator finally gave in and courted a young woman from a neighboring Pavilion. Tamar was beautiful and gifted in herbalism, even at 17. She was fiery, a trait the Drykas male found most appealing, and the two fell madly in love and married. The depth of their love bode well for the pavilion, so the elder women of the family said.

However, things for the Pavllion began to fall apart. Eachann's third wife, a Konti named Ay'aka, was thrown from her horse and killed. Ay'aka was a source of pride to the clan, having come and eradicated a severe horse plague with her medicine. She brought strength and joy to the family, her konti daughters believed to be omens of prosperity. Ay'aka's loss hit Vanator hard. Though the Konti wife often outshone his own mother, Ay'aka was like a second mother to him.

Bad luck seemed to pursue the Pavilion. Though Vanator and Tamar were fiercely amorous, after five years Tamar had yet to bear a child.

Then tragically, Tamar was suddenly killed during a Zith attack while gathering food. She and a few others had strayed too far from camp. Tamar's body was found, still clutching her long dagger, stained with Zith blood. The only solace for Vanator was that she had not been taken to be a slave or food for the vile creatures.

Tamar's death devastated Vanator, who mourned for over a year. He no longer hunted with others of the Pavilion, choosing to go alone with the dogs or cats. With the support of his family, especially his youngest half-sister, Kavala, Vanator was able to move past the loss of Tamar. But the tragedy had scarred him. Much to his parent's consternation, He had no interest in finding another wife. The superstitious crones among the clan whispered that the daughters of Ay'aka had indeed brought bad luck to the Pavilion. Vanator firmly defended his sisters from such accusations.

But bad things kept happening.

Kavala left to study among the Konti in Mura. Her departure left Vanator without a trusted confidant. Akela became more distant as the clan became more and more suspicious of the affect of her presence on the Pavilion's fate. Though he tried to convince her otherwise, Akela too left camp to find something amid the dry dust to the south.

Finally Vanator's Strider Zura died from a venomous snake bite. The Ankal's son had to ride a common mount until he was chosen by Backlash.

So the brooding heir to the Denusk Pavilion carries on, helping his father lead their people, looking for signs of his sisters' return, roaming the plains.

Re: Chatacter Questions

General Information :
1. What is your Name?
Vanator of the Denusk Pavilion, Sapphire Clan
2. Do you go by a nickname or pet name?
Van
3. How old are you?
36
4. What is your height?
5'10"
5. What is your weight?
180lbs

Aesthetics :
1. Describe yourself as you see yourself.
I am Drykas. I am proud to be so. I wouldn't know how not to be Drykas! I certainly have the free spirit and passion of my people, which had been allowed to reign free for a time. But now it is tempered by responsibility. Responsibility that I accept, but sometimes chafe against. I want to enjoy life. Cyphrus can cut life too short not to get the most out of it. I have my moments too, I have known the grief of great loss and the anger of hatred. I guess sometimes I can be melancholic if I reflect to deeply on my losses. I can be the diplomat, but I do not conceal strong emotion well. I have a temper that flares occasionally.
2. Describe yourself as others typically see you.
As the Ankal's son, many in my Pavilion look up to me. Some as a leader, some as kind of a communal son. They do not necessarily always agree with my decisions, or my choice in wives, but most would not dare to stand against me. Most people who meet me find me easy to approach as long as the situation is non-threatening. But I have intimidated some with my quick anger.
3. What is your favorite body feature?
My Windmark and my Chevas mark. Though I wish I could see them. I am also proud of my shoulders. I try not to be vain, but I believe they are strong and powerful.
4. How physically fit are you?
Quite. I am a bit bulkier than some of my leaner peers, running less and using a heavier weapon has given me a rather well defined upper body. Age, however, has admittedly meant my joints are a little stiffer in the mornings!

5. How do you typically dress and what is your style?
I dress functionally in Drykas garb. I avoid bright colors which would stand out in the grasslands. I prefer sleeveless tunics and loose breeches for comfort and ease of movement. Riding boots of course. I do like knotwork embroidered onto my clothes. I don't wear jewelry, except for some etched silver and bronze bands in my braids. I typically also carry a dagger and a hand ax stuck in my belt.

Family :
1. Who are your parents and what are they like?
My father is Eachann, Ankal of our pavilion. My mother is his first wife, Nadra. They both still live. My father is a great leader, modeling compassion and courage. My mother is quiet but strong, deferring to the needs of the family over her own.

2. Do you have any brothers or sisters?
I have two half-sisters close to my age, Kavala and Akela, Konti's by my father's third wife, named Ay'vaka. Bolden was raised as my half-brother by father and Ay'aka, but in reality Bolden is my son. We also have a half brother, Cohnad, by our father's third wife, but he is never around.

3. What is your extended family like?
Our pavilion has had its share of joy, sorrow and drama, some even say its men are cursed. The death of my first wife, Tamar, the death of Ay'aka, the disappearance of Bolden and the decisions of the Konti sisters to leave the pavilion weighed heavily on us all. The addition of my wives Kashik and Khiara have been helpful, for the most part, and the family is slowly healing, I believe.

4. Do you consider close friends as important or more/less important than family?
Family is most important, it is the backbone of the Drykas.

5. Do you treat animals like family?
Our Striders are family. In fact, they often have the spirit of family that have passed on dwelling in them. My first Strider was killed by a venomous snake several years ago. My next Strider, Backlash, was closer to me thanmy first one ever was. Shortly before she died, I learned she housed the spirit of my beloved lost Tamar, making the horse's death doubly devastating. We rely on our Striders to survive, our bond with them is very much like family. Our hunting dogs and cats are well treated and trusted companions.

Location :
1. Where were you born?
Somewhere in the Sea of Grass.
2. Where do you live now? Endrykas.
3. If you could live anywhere in Mizahar where would that be?
Hmmmm....that would be the Sea of Grass.
4. Do you have a favorite place to vacation or spend leisure time? The open grasslands. The seashore.
5. Where do you fear to be?
I have been in some very strange and frightening places, but I think the most frightening place to me would be the middle of the ocean. The thought of no land in site is very disturbing. Also, I have no love for the tunnels beneath the Sea of Grass.

Traits :
1. Do you have any physical weaknesses (disease, scars, and missing limbs?)
Not really. So far I have survived pretty much intact. I do have quite a few scars.
2. Are you right handed or left handed?
Right
3. What languages do you speak? What do you sound like? Do you have an accent?
Pavi, Grassland Sign and Common. I am usually even-toned, but can bark authoritatively if necessary. My Common is accented.
4. Do you have any odd mannerisms, annoying habits, or other defining characteristics?
I carry in my pocket a strange crystal that I found. I tend to often reach down to make sure it is still there. I also crack my knuckles and neck a lot.
5. Do you have (or want to get) any tattoos or piercing? Why do you have them (or will get them)?
Of course I have a Windmark tattooed across my upper back. It is a "tribal" style design that starts at my spine and reaches out in both directions to end in sharp points over my shoulders. I also have a Lacun mark at the center of my chest. It appeared when Tamar died, placed there by Cheva to commemorate our lost bond. It is a thick, woody vine entwined with a fragile flowering vine in a circle. I bear a Chevas mark on the left side of my neck, the design of entertwining ax, spear and snowflake commemorating my marriage with Kashik and Khiara.

Occupations :
1. What is your occupation?
I don't have a defined occupation. I do what the pavilion or my father needs. I am a hunter, diplomat and Webber.
2. Do you like/dislike your work? Why?
Work is good, it makes you strong and contributes to the well being of all.
3. If you could be anything you wanted to, what would you be?
I have never really considered being anything other than what I am!
4. What occupation do you admire the most? Why?
Ankal. I look up to my father. He is a good, strong and fair leader. I hope I will be when it comes my turn.
5. What occupation do you lest like? Why?[
The guys who push the dung carts in Endrykas, picking up the manure piles. Need I explain?/spoiler]

[spoiler=Childhood]1. What sort of child were you?
Ornery and a fool for the attention of girls.
2. What is your favorite memory from childhood?
Playing with Kavala and Akela, we were all so different, but seemed to have so much fun.
3. What is your worst memory from childhood? This happened a lot, but I remember one time when one of my uncles did not return from a hunting trip....glassbeaks got him. I liked him a lot and I was devastated.
4. What sort of relationship did you have with your parents?
My Father is my mentor, taking me under his wing from childhood to teach me how to be an Ankal one day. My mother was my emotional stability. I love them both very much.
5. Who was your most influential rolemodel?
My father, if you haven't picked that up yet.

Education :
1. What sort of education do you have?
My education was informal, my mother and my father's other wives taught us to read and write, the men taught us to fight and hunt. It was a community education. Father began to teach me Webbing later as well.
2. Do you like/dislike learning?
I like to learn actively, doing things. The reading/writing stuff was not as engaging to me.
3. Where or how did you learn most of your skills/abilities?
Members of the Paviion. Like I said.
4. How do you learn best?
By doing.
5. What are your educational goals for the future?
I would like to become a skilled Webber like my father, our clan produce the best at that art.

Relationships :
1. Do you form close bonds with people? Why? Why not?
Yes, but not profusely. I am close to some of my family, but have only confided in a few close relatives and friends. I get a feel for those who I can trust with my heart before getting close.
2. Do you trust people easily? If not, why not?
No, not easily. Its like I said. Most have to earn that trust. Some have gained it almost immediately. Some may never get it.
3. Do you consider yourself straight, gay, bi, or something else?
Straight
4. Have you ever been kissed? If so, describe the first time.
I'm 35 and have had three wives, I've kissed a bit! Actually. I have been kissing girls as long as I can remember! I was the king of kissing tag as a child. As the heir to the Ankal of a pavilion, there was no shortage of girls willing to kiss me. So, uh, yes.
5. Have you ever had sex? If so, describe the first time.
Again, yes. The first time was a bit awkward, but wonderful at the same time, I was in love. Bolden was the result of that union.

Drugs and Alcohol :
1. Have you ever been drunk? If so, describe your first time.
I have. On occasion when I was younger. The details of the first time are fuzzy but involved trying to strap a yvas onto a zibri.
2. Do you like to drink on a regular basis?
No
3. What sort of alcohol do you prefer?
Ale and mead
4. Have you ever tried drugs (mood altering substances)? If so, which kinds and what did you think of them?
No
5. What do you think of drugs and alcohol? Be specific.
They can serve a medicinal purpose and can take the edge off of stress. But when in the Grasslands, a man whose reactions are slowed by chemicals and alcohol is a dead man, and worse off, may cost the life of a brother.

Likes and Dislikes :
1. What are your hobbies?
I like to swim, ride and hear a good story.
2. Do you like to read?
No
3. What annoys you more than anything else?
A babbling fool.
4. What do you find the most relaxing activity to do?
riding, sharpening my ax, cuddling my wives and child.
5. What kinds of things embarrass you? Why?
When I was younger, I was worried about embarrassing my father, but I have outgrown that.

Favorites :
1. What is your favorite color or colors?
Brown, tan and blue.
2. What is your favorite time of day?
Morning.
3. What is the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen?
Beauty comes in so many ways, the sunset over the sea is beautiful, watching Khiara and Kashik and Zivitar sleep is beautiful.
4. What do you like to eat? What do you hate to eat?
I like meat, any kind cooked any way! I am not fond of grubs, but ants and other insects are OK. I like cheese, the stinkier the better.
5. What is your favorite type of weather? Does any kind scare you? Nothing is more thrilling than a thunderstorm rolling up on the plains.

Outlook :
1. Are you optimistic or pessimistic?
Optimistic
2. What are your religious views?
I give deities honor where honor is due. Semele, Caiyha and Eyris are particularly important to me.
3. Would you be able to kill?
Yes, and have, without regret.
4. What are your views on sex?
Sex is a beautiful and powerful thing. It has served many purposes, at least for me. Of course, it was an incredible bonding act of love with my wives, and has produced my sons. Before them, it has served to give me solace as well as allowed me to comfort others, and even to cement certain friendships. I do not look at it lightly, for the act carries with it a bond that ties the participants together in some way.
5. What, in your opinion, makes a successful life?
A life should exhibit accomplishments, both personal and ones that positively impact others.

Actions :
1. What is the worst and best thing you’ve ever done?
The best thing I have ever done was start a family. The worst...an encounter with a she-zith that I cannot bear to retell.
2. What is your greatest regret?
That I could not save Tamar from her death.
3. What is your best/worst memory?
I have so many wonderful memories, I cannot pick a favorite. The worst, by far, finding Tamar after the attack.
4. If you could change one thing about your past, what would it be and why?
Like I said, if I could go back, I would not let Tamar go that day, or would have at least gone with her.
5. What are you the most proud of doing in your life?
I cannot say.

Emotions :
1. How honest are you about your thoughts and feelings with others?
I may not tell everyone everything, but I do not lie about how I feel.
2. Do you have any biases or prejudices?
Some would say I do. I may be a little prideful as a Drykas. I tend to distrust Northerners and Eypharians.
3. What makes you happy?
Riding, holding my son, time alone with my wives.
4. Who or what, if anything, would you die for?
My family, my friends, protecting our land.
5. What makes you angry?[
Poachers and trespassers, abuse of women, children and horses. Liars, troublemakers, and gossips. /spoiler]

[spoiler=Relationships]1. In general, how do you treat others?
It depends on who they are. I try to give everyone the respect they deserve, some deserve less.
2. Who is the most important person in your life, and why?
How can I chose one? Kashik, Khiara and Zivitar...and Kavala...and Bolden. See, how?
3. Who is the person you respect the most, and why?
My father, I think I've touched on this already.
4. Do you have a spouse or significant other? If not, describe an ideal lover.
I have two wives Khiara and Kashik.
5. Do you trust anyone to protect you? Who, and why
My family.

Group Situations :
1. Do you tend to argue with people, or avoid conflict?
I tend to find diplomatic means around confrontation, but will not shy away from conflict if necessary.
2. Do you tend to take on leadership roles in social situations?
I do, if there is an apparent need, or if a fool is controlling things.
3. Do you like interacting with large groups of people? Why or why not?
I do not crave it, but it does not bother me to do so. As an Ankal's son, I cannot avoid it.
4. Do you care what others think of you?
Very little.
5. What do you think of others, in general?
I tend to analyze people and categorize them initially so I have a reference point for relating to them.

Self Image :
1. What is your greatest strength as a person?
That I have been blessed to be born a Drykas.
2. What is your greatest weakness?
Occasional lack of self control.
3. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
hmmmm.... let me work on that one.
4. Are you generally introverted or extroverted?
Extroverted, cautiously.
5. Are you generally organized or messy?
Organized

Beliefs :
1. What God or Goddess do you find most appealing, if any?
Caiyha and Eyris.
2. Which God or Goddess do you fear, if any?
You would be a fool not to fear the wrath of any god.
3. Do you have any Gnosis Marks? If so, how did you receive them?
No.
4. What lengths would you go to to please your deity?
I have not been marked by any god or goddess as a favored follower, so I do not expect to be required to do more than I already do. If I were chosen so, I would serve with passion.
5. Where do you draw the line at pleasing your deity? What is too much?
That would be determined by the moment, in all honesty.

[spoiler=Life & Death]1. What do you absolutely live for?
My family and our land.
2. What is the best part of life?
Waking up everyday.
3. What is the best part of death?
Joining those who have gone before.
4. If you could choose, how would you want to die?
On my horse.
5. What is the one thing for which you would most like to be remembered after your death?
That I was a true Drykas.

Kashik
Image Race: Drykas
Age: 23
Relationship: Wife

Vanator wed the young Kashik after an arranged meeting between the two set up by their families. But their love had actually ignited after a brief tryst earlier in the season. They now strive to forge a strong marriage that will one day be the foundation of the pavilion. Kashik was also key in bringing Khiara into the family, and has born Vanator a son.

Zivatar
Image Race: Drykas
Age: Infant
Relationship: Son

Zivitar is the son of Kashik and Vanator, and his first legitimate child. His name is derived from an old form of the Pavi word for thunderstorm, commemorating the day his parents met, beneath a raging storm.

Khiara
Image Race: Vantha
Age: 23
Relationship: Wife

One time friends with a hidden love, Khiara and Vanator had denied their affections for the sake of others in their lives. Once Kashik was pregnant with Van's first legitimate child, Vanator and Kashik have welcomed the Vantha into the family as his second wife.

Kavala
Image Race: Konti
Age: 32
Relationship: Half-sister

Kavala and Vanator share the same father, and grew up as not only siblings, but close friends. Separated for more than two years after Kavala left to study in Mura, much had happened in both of their lives that have changed each of them. They now try to rebuild their relationship over the distance between Riverfall and Endrykas.

Akela
Image Race: Konti
Age: 36
Relationship: Half-sister

Kavala's older sister, Akela, was never as close to Vanator as the younger Konti, but she was like a brother to him. Both rivals and partners in crime, Akela regularly bested her half-brother on the sparring grounds. Akela had left the pavilion shortly after Kavala went to Mura. Vanator rarely gets to see the wandering Konti swordswoman.

Bolden
Image Race: Drykas
Age: 19
Relationship: Son (raised as half-brother)

Bolden is the illegitimate son of Vanator and his teenage sweetheart, who died after birthing Bolden. Only fifteen at the time, Vanator was not deemed ready to raise a son, and the girl's father would not allow his family to raise the boy. So Van' father, Eachann and his Konti wife Ay'vata raised Bolden as their own. Bolden disappeared for six years after suffering anmesia in a horse-related accident. Upon his return, Vanator revealed to him the true nature of their relationship.

Nyx
Image Race: Cyphrus Strider
Age: 4
Relationship: Mount

After losing Backlash on a hunt in the Fall of 510AV, Vanatoir struggled to bond with a new Strider. Finally, after visiting the herds of Kashik's family, he bonded with a palomino stallion named Nyx. Head strong and protective, Nyx has proven to be a loyal, if not challenging mount at times.
