Considered one of the most mysterious cities in Mizahar, Alvadas is called The City of Illusions. It is the home of Ionu and the notorious Inverted. This city sits on one of the main crossroads through The Region of Kalea.

Day 90, Spring of 512 AV
Midday
Alvadas Government Headquarters

Eridanus had settled some of the administrative issues a few bells earlier, no problem. Now was the more important one, and it was one that he better be prepared for mentally if he wanted favourable terms. The Order of Transcendence was a guild of wizards, focusing on research and development. However, reality often required checks for pragmatism, and he knew that they needed resources in order to pursue their goals.

He had heard from various sources that the government generally out-sourced its work, including magic-related work, and this was the opportunity that he was looking for. He knew that the government had their own research branch, but he also knew that the government had resources. It would make sense for them to leave the ground-breaking stuff for the department to work on instead of wasting their time with repetitive work.

That was the reason he was sitting at the waiting lounge now, while the receptionist went to check the schedule. It seemed that he was going to be meeting with the Azure Triad, the main governing body of the city.

Let's hope I do this right.

The Contract (Fallacy)

The wait wasn’t nearly as long as it could have been. The Triad had been busy, but their affairs did have priority. After a couple bells waiting there with the room spinning, changing shape, and accessories every time he blinked, the receptionist finally called out Eridanus’ name saying that the Triad would see him now, and lead him to the back room. Doors great and tall met them with the symbol of Ionu on them, the azure triangle hanging on the door, but also slightly popping out as if it couldn’t decide if it was better off plastered on the door or hanging in the air.

Before the receptionist could even knock on the door or announce the mans presence, the doors opened for them revealing a purple room with quit the pre-val design. It was of a grand scale for only a meeting place. The room itself one could be sure it was square, but as a visitor walked into the room it would slowly morph itself into a particular shape, that of a triangle. Where the tree Triad members sat at the far end of the square room, they would each get a corner when the triangle was formed. In the room sat two of the three Triad members: Alluvia Lighting, and the infamous Madam Shylock. The third seat was empty.

The chairs looked more like thrones. They were of the finest quality and had elegant images carved on the very wood they were made of. Plush pillows lined the seat, and what could only be gaged as the best of the best was for the Triad. The room was of equal splendor. Decked in a theme of purple and gold the lighting came from an unknown source, but lit the room quite well, if not showing off more the gold. It would be a truly humbling place for the commoner, daunting and intimidating for anyone who wanted something. Though it didn’t give that particular feel. There was a welcome energy, but the man would have to battle doubts of his own mind. This was Eridanus’ chance. He couldn’t screw it up.

Eridanus was in fact lucky to have two of the Triad make his request, through lucky, it would be that much harder to get approval because they both have to agree. ”Please, state your name and business for the record.” Shylock spoke up, as if ready to get this over with. To the Madams left and right were scribes, and their quills were already busily at work writing down what she had said thus far.

It took a long time, and he stifled the urge to yawn. However, important people often passed by this area, and he had to put on a fully professional appearance in order to not jeopardize his case. People often say that first impressions could wreck a potential relationship, and he wanted every variable in his favour.

Soon, his name was called, and his heart began to quicken in anticipation.

Calm down.

There was no need to get anxious. Taking a deep breath, he took a moment to call on the quicker meditative techniques he used to portray a steady and confident air, then strode firmly into the room to meet the most powerful people in Alvadas.

The Azure Triad.

The room warped and swivelled as he entered, but he paid his surroundings no heed. The offices in the Department of Illusion were confusing enough, and though he could never really get used to it he knew that it was perfectly normal in Alvadas. When the room finally stopped spinning, he took a moment to appreciate the pre-Valterrian architecture.

Reminds me of a little of Zeltiva.

There were only two of the Triad there, and he frowned inwardly when he saw Madam Shylock. He was actually hoping for a one-on-one meeting with just Alluvia, so the appearance of the crafty Triad member complicated things. That meant that he would have to restructure his argument in order to garner her approval as well.

Maybe pay in blood or something.

"I am Eridanus, resident of Alvadas. I am a member, and current de-facto leader of the newly formed organization the Order of Transcendence. We are a private association of researchers, scientists and wizards, and we hope to primarily further our foray into magic, while providing a generally dependable safety net for our wizards via our infrastructure and community. Like all new organizations, we require funds, and I will not mince my words here."

While he spoke, he continually turned his head to address the two Triad members during his speech, though he made sure to maintain firm eye contact so that he could portray a sort of confidence. The worst thing he needed was the Triad thinking that he could not handle himself or an organization.

"We require funds, but we have the expertise to make up for it. I have heard that the Government often outsource contracts to external bodies in order to circumvent the market price, as well as to free up your own Research Department from repetitive work. We are willing to do this repetitive work. As long as it relates to magic, and within our sphere of expertise, we can do it below the market price. Subject to negotiation, of course."

The faint scratching of quills could be heard as the scribes did their best to record every spoken word. As Eridanus finished his introduction there would be a moment of silence, the scratching of quills over rough parchment would be the only thing heard in the room. It was an awkward kind of silence that would leave Eridanus to think that he wasn’t being taken seriously at all, or perhaps too seriously. He had asked for money, and at the mention of the need for Miza, if Eri was watching, he would see Shylock straighten up a bit, devious smile on her face.

”You are looking for employment?’ Shylock asked as if confirming her suspicion as she tumbled an idea around in her head. This one was a sly one, doing his research before he came here. Respectable. Though it was well known that the government outsourced work. Anyone could figure that out with a quick peek. Mind always turning the situation in her head she asked ”And what be it that your Order specializes in? What kind of work can be delegated to them in confidence that it will be completed?”

Alluvia on the other hand stayed silent, watching with an almost glad smile. She thought this was a great opportunity for both parties involved. It would be just fantastic to have another contract with some reliable people. For some reason the man, to her, radiated a sense of confidence and she liked the air about him. The way he talked, how he presented the information… Just if he would have gone on a little more, though it would be pretty obvious that Shylock will be the main obstacle in this contract with the government.

”In what ways do you believe your organization can out due the contracts we already have in place?” Alluvia asked her question.

"Not employment, Madam Shylock," Eridanus corrected the older Triad member. Words held power, and he did not want to demean or lock his own position to definitions and technicalities. If the issue ever arose, he wanted the words to be on his side, which was the reason behind his correction. "We are looking for a mutually beneficial partnership; a relationship that both of us would like; a contract, if you will."

"We currently have expertise in Magecraft, and other various disciplines such as Auristics, Shielding and Glyphing," He continued. The vantha was obviously referring to himself, for he knew that at least that he was reliable in that regard. "Of course, we are currently a little low on members, but our guild's rank will ideally swell up to include all areas of disciplines. What I am asking is for Magecraft operations to be outsourced to us, with possible expansions in the terms for other disciplines to be included as we get bigger and more experienced."

He nodded gratefully to Alluvia, sensing her subtle display of support. He knew that she was generally a reasonable person, and his main obstacle would be the calculative businesswoman. That was fine, for that meant that Shylock spoke business. Business was logic, and was a question of numbers for the parties involved.

He could speak numbers and logic if that was required.

"Thank you for the question, Alluvia," He replied. Though he was answering her question, he was actually subtly directing his response to Madam Shylock, for he knew that she would be most interested in his answer.

"It is a question of profit and reliability. The Government constantly strives to reduce costs in its budget, yet a certain quality must be maintained, and reliability in its contracts. I shall now address each of these concerns."

"I acknowledge that as a new guild, we have not built up a stable and trustworthy relationship with the Government unlike your other contracts. However, I vouch with my character, honour and reputation that the guild - as long as I maintain control over it, and I most definitely will - will be a hundred percent reliable and trustworthy. How much my personal character is worth, I am pretty sure your worthy intelligence networks would already know regarding my contributions to the events in Winter, the aftermath of the events in Spring, and my continued efforts for the Government throughout."

He was of course, referring to the Prophecy that brought him from Sunberth, the various building and clean-up operations in the midst of the Monster invasions, and his dedicated efforts as an employee of the Department of Illusions.

"As a result of this reliability, I will also guarantee a minimum quality in our work, subject to a benchmark set by the Government. We are competent in our work, though not necessarily the best in our fields. However, the repetitive work you most likely need does not require complete mastery, merely something that works to your specifications. That refers to the minimum quality I spoke of, and in this regard I feel that we are fully qualified in handling the work."

"We are also willing to work below market costs, and that should reduce the costs in your budget. I believe that we will get to the negotiation of the actual value if the Triad gives the initial approval. However, instead of just talking about costs, let us realize that business is also about profit. Let us proceed to a cost-benefit analysis, and I hope to show you why forming a contract with us, as opposed to your current contract-holders, outperforms in this statistical manner."

"The cost, of course, is the actual financial costs involved, combined with the switching costs associated with the transferral of your contract with your existing contractee(s) to us. However, let us take into account the guild and our future. We aim to create a cutting edge facility in research and development, and we all know that profit lies in monopoly - in this case, monopoly of knowledge. Consumers will flock to buy products and services they cannot get elsewhere, while scholars and scientists seek our community to further exchange ideas."

"The benefit from this would be increased volumes of trade with Alvadas, which translates to various spill-over effects. Merchants need to use the docks, and they need a place to sleep and eat. More money will in essence, come flowing in, and everyone else benefits. The advanced technology and magic that we will be developing will no doubt spill over as well, letting Alvadas and its citizens live at a higher standard of living compared to the rest. The increased 'brain-flow' of talents will lead to a greater value and quality in intellectual exchanges, which will benefit both the science and arts sector in the city, making Alvadas much more vibrant."

He geared his speech in both logical and emotional ways so that he could add methods of persuasions for both Alluvia and Shylock. What he needed was not grudging support. No, he needed full support and approval from both members, and so he could not afford to alienate either.

"Now then, with all these concerns addressed, will not not agree that awarding the contract to us would be in your best interest, my best interest, and the best interest of the city and its citizens?"

The Contract (Fallacy)

The Triad listened to the man. There was sense of heavy judgment in the air, his every word was being judged, not once but twice, and not by one mind but two. Risk, especially calculated risk was needed when deciding such things. How much should they just hand out to this person? No, not hand out, everything has a price, whether it be time or money or labor, everything has a price. Then Eridanus went on further explaining why his up and coming guild should get some support. He brought up good points, and Alluvia’s head was bobbing up and down at appropriate times. Though, Shylock, being more business hardened, kept her thoughts and emotions about the subject locked up behind a mask crafted by making numerous ‘deals’ and ‘bargains’ before.

For a moment after Eridanus was done, there would be silence, but it wasn’t an ordinary silence. The air itself was charged with a tense, hard, moment of decision. They pressure upon the man would be enormous as he waited for an answer. Madam Shylock was about to respond, before Alluvia interrupted with a cute ‘mhm’ before looking at Shylock, ”How about a recess?” she suggested, looking at Shylock that gave the impression that she wanted to talk to her privately before the elder made her decision on the subject.

It wasn’t very professional, but in the end Shylock agreed and Eri was ushered out of the room, his feet not even having to move themselves. It was like the room moved him out of it, and he once again found himself in the lobby. The many mysteries and powers of Alvadas were endless it seemed, and there, in the lobby, the eth found himself waiting again.

Luckily it wasn’t long until, wherever the Eridanus was, he found himself in the presence of the Triad once more. They had come to a decision, but there was one difference, Alluvia wasn’t present. Did she have obligations elsewhere? It was just Eridanus, alone with the most business hardened part of the Triad. She sat there in her seat, looking down at the man. The Room had once again moved itself so she was positioned right in front of him, and the other two tips of the Triangle were behind him. It didn’t matter, no, for no one occupied those seats.

”Eridanus, in regards to your request we, the Triad, have decided” now it was questionable if it was really what the Triad had decided or what Shylock did, but nonetheless it was the next words that mattered the most, ”to accept your proposal. Our current contracts have not been as beneficial as we would have hoped.” she stopped there. Just stopped. Making sure that he knew the moment the guild would disappoint Shylock they too would be cut, ”This is what we have drawn up. Fair enough and reasonable.” she said handing Eridanus a piece of paper.

It read:

Order of Transcendence, known as "First Party," agrees to enter into this contract with The Triad, known as "Second Party" on Spring 90, 512 AV.

This agreement is based on the following provisions:

1. The Triad agrees to pay 50% (Fifty Percent) of all Order of Transcendence expenses in regards to Structures, Clothing, Magical Supplies, etc. for the duration of the contracts existence. All transactions happening in this way must be submitted and approved, via form, by the Triad.

2. A budget of 1000 (One Thousand) Gold Miza a Season will be provided to the Order of Transcendence by the Triad to help sustain guild growth and development. This Miza must be spent on guild expenses exclusively.

3. The Order of Transcendence hereby agrees to provide only the very best quality in their craft when dealing with the Triad (Subject to Government Inspection).

4. The Order of Transcendence will be sent a list of requirements to meet based on its members capabilities. If previously mentioned tasks are not upheld then the First Party will be issued a fee based on the variables above.

Furthermore, the First Party agrees:

1. All items crafted using Guild Funds is Triad Property by default. OOC(Not out of the PCs personal pocket)

2. The Order of Transcendence is subject to inspection and the constant presence of government officials (armed or otherwise) who will be assigned by the Triad. The Government Officials are there to enforce the Contract and uphold safety of Alvadas. Opposing an Official results in a breach of contract upon which control of the First Party assists are seized by the Second Party.

3. Provide detailed records on all members of the Order of Transcendence including their name, race, gender, projects and work within the order, and talents. All information must be kept up to update. Any and all changes must be reported to the Traid and failure to do so will result in a fee.

and the Second Party agrees:

1. Ensure the payment of all guild members living expenses (Good) and medical costs.

2. Allow free access to all Government Locations to (recorded and reported) guild members. This access will be provided by a card which is produced by the Triad ensuring all costs are paid for.

3. To allow the transfer of ownership of items made in the Order of Transcendenc’s name from the Triad to the First Party upon purchasing from the Second Party at 1.5x (One point Five Times) cost taken to produce the item.

Invalidity or unenforceability of one or more provisions of this agreement shall not affect any other provision of this agreement.

This contract will become effective Summer 1, 512 AV.

On the bottom of the contract was a place for Eridanus to sign as the ‘leader’ of the guild. Below that spot was signed the two names of the Triad members. If the man wanted to sign it, then a quill and ink would be provided.

OOCThe contract should be a obvious hint that the guild should keep me, The DS, up to date on their interactions. The form mentioned in Provision 1 is as simple as PMing me your agreed upon plans. :)

There seemed to some sort of disagreement within the Triad, and it made him feel slightly better. Obviously allowing Madam Shylock free reign would be disastrous to his efforts, and having the fair Alluvia present to temper her demands would make things more reasonable.

Accepting the contract, he carefully read through the terms and conditions, feeling his heart sinking with every word that he read. Although, he was sure to keep his face and emotions neutral and professional - there was no need to reveal his cards or anything now that Shylock was the only one remaining in the room.

This was the one thing that he had hoped it would not descend to - a one on one with Shylock, but it must be done if he was to help spearhead the guild to greater heights. She wished to control the guild, that part was evident. He would sooner reject the contract than to allow that to happen.

"Thank you for the consideration, Madam Shylock," Eridanus replied graciously, the words sliding out of his tongue like honeyed poison. "However, I wish to address several points that seemed rather unfair, no?"

"This is a contract, and we wish to make things very clear. Leaving room for interpretation would lead to expensive attorneys and is one thing that neither of us want to go to, am I right? It is best to keep amiable relations."

"Regarding Provision 1, I wish to have the further clarification: 'The Triad agrees that the subsidies made in this manner does not affect ownership of said assets in any way, and the guild continues to retain 100% ownership of assets purchased in this manner'. Furthermore, for fairness I would wish to have a proper guideline as to what can or cannot be reasonably approved or not."

"Regarding Provision 2, the same clarification I have mentioned earlier should be included as well."

"Regarding Provision 3, I wish to include the further clarification: 'Whereby "best quality in craft" refers to the crafting of commissioned items to the best of the guild's ability to a reasonable and fair extent, barring no personal negligence in the process. Furthermore, it is just that should inspections fail, the guild is allowed to seek appeal from a verified and certified external inspector to reinspect the goods in question and to provide an alternative voice."

"Regarding Provision 4, the list should be capped at the point where the workload do not take up more than 50% of our guild members' time available. Each of our members have a full-time job outside of this, and spend their remaining time for themselves and the Guild. Out of this little time they have it should be reasonable that we be allowed half the time for personal research and to further guild agendas, and the other half to maintain the contract."

"Regarding First Party Agreement 1, I hereby contest this clause. We wish to maintain autonomy in our proceedings, and seek a co-operative and equal relationship with the Triad and the Government, not a subservient one. I suggest erasing this clause for it makes little sense, especially if Provision 1 is accepted. Instead, if it must be included, I suggest: 'All items created with the exclusive use of Second Party resources belong to the Triad by default'. That would refer to the list of commissioned items equitably."

"Regarding First Party Agreement 2, the wording is too vague. We may be seized at any time, and 'co-operation' can merely be getting the official a cup of tea. We do not wish to damage relationships and in order to keep the integrity and virtue of both parties, I suggest referring to a proper Attorney of Law to reword this fairly."

"Regarding First Party Agreement 3, we can accept this, however we cannot be held responsible for mischief of a member in terms of divulging information. We will, however, do our best to uphold this, but cannot be held completely responsible."

"We are willing to 'trade', so to speak, Second Party Agreements for the change in the above clauses."

Stopping to catch a breath after that lengthy spiel, he looked at Madam Shylock straight in the eye, the fire of conviction burning in his gaze.

"The most important thing to us is Autonomy, the Right of Discovery and the Retention of Domain over discoveries and inventions. In exchange for the help of the Triad and the Government, we will do our part in terms of commissioning artifacts for official use, as well as community service - which we can discuss further if you wish and include as a clause in the contract. I seek an equitable contract that will benefit both of us without degrading either, so I can only hope that you wish to do the same as well."
