Riverfall Aqueducts

Image

The Riverfall Aqueducts were created several years after the Valterrian, and built in conjunction with the city's many channelled waterways.
It was designed to provide a purified source of water for the citizens who could afford to have it pumped into their homes, but the implementation of the fire element, through Reimancy, for purification purposes, had the unexpected side effect of supplying Riverfall with, not only a purified source of water, but a heated source also.

The aqueducts excess supply of fresh water is carefully siphoned off at the end of each day, and stored in a single heated reservoir, this process is completed under the watchful eyes of the Aqueduct Foreman, Halsey, to ensure that the reservoir transfer is completed without incidents or injuries to his team. This reservoir is run by a skeleton team that maintains it's heat throughout the night, continuing to supply hot water to Riverfall, even while the majority of the workers are not present.

The aqueduct system draws water from the Bluevein river, where is is siphoned down beneath the earth to the deep reservoirs where all impurities are removed, vastly improving the quality for consumption. The entrance to these reservoirs is located behind the waterfall that the city is so well known for, and the tunnels lead workers directly down to the catacombs.

During high summer, particularly when heat-waves strike, it is not unheard of for guards to be posted in the tunnels to ensure that the purified water can be rationed out fairly. Although the Bluevein, due to it's size, is nearly limitless, the reservoirs have been known to dry up in a heatwave when the residents of Riverfall drink more than can be purified in a timely fashion.

In a heatwave the citizens of Riverfall still have access to the Bluevein, and the network of waterways that funnel water throughout the city's parks and green spaces from the falls, however, a lack of cleansed drinking water often results in several outbreaks of illnesses, as there are always those who do not know how to, or even that they need to, cleanse and prepare river water safely for drinking or cooking.
Image

As old as the aqueduct system itself, the tall green marble pillars that sit in each deep reservoir are the heart that keeps the system working. Through a complicated mix of Reimancy (water and fire), and Glyphing runes (that use a trigger connected to the hourly chiming of a green marble faced clock), it is these ancient pillars that cleanse the water of all impurities.

Finding someone with the skills to maintain the runes on these structures is a constant battle, and often the site foreman will turn to anyone with Glyphing and Reimancy abilities who passes through Riverfall, requesting a service of the structure for singular payment, usually in the region on 100gm to 150gm.
It has been many years since the position of 'Aqueduct Runes Maintenance Supervisor" has had a permanent employee, but Halsey keeps a job vacancy posting at the Labour Aid offices, regardless.

The carved visage of Makutsi, goddess of water, on each green marble pillar is a more recent addition, and is a sign of the many people to work on and strengthen the Aqueducts glyphs. The last Reimancer to work on the constructs believed it was only through Makutsi's benevolent influence that the aqueducts had successfully purified the city's water for so long, and with his basic carving skills, paid homage to the water goddess by including her image in the structures.
This belief is gradually growing within Riverfall, and becoming an accepted idea. The carvings have remained, and many citizens, particularly outsiders who find the aqueducts nothing short of amazing, often send forth thanks to the goddess for the fresh and clean water supply.

There is little natural light deep inside the catacombs, and quite often workers fall into the reservoirs of water. Enough time spent below the surface of the city teaches the workers their way around, but more often than not a citizen won't be hired unless they know how to swim, and only employee's who have been there 6 months or more work with the heated reservoirs.

NPC

Name:Halsey
Race: Akalak
DoB: 43rd day of Spring 225AV (Age; 287)
PoB: Riverfall
Title:Aqueduct Foreman
Skills: Leadership 87, Mechanical 36, Swimming 70, Rhetoric 62, Business 58, Cleaning 10, Gardening 27.
Gnosis:N/A

As Aqueduct Foreman for over 200 years, Halsey knows the system inside out. He has his team working like clockwork, and he seems to know instinctively whether something is going to go wrong, like the aqueducts are connected to him. He learnt the job from his father and expected to teach it to his own son, but the young Akalak pursued a different path and now resides with the Cerulean.
As site foreman, all responsibility ultimately falls to Halsey, and he takes all mistakes very seriously. His last system manager fell into a reservoir of water just as it was siphoned into the city, contaminating the liquid irreparably which is why Halsey is now searching for a new employee.
Halsey is very even tempered, which makes it all the more worrying when his darker side comes out to play, as Shenal has a temper like lightening; quick, sharp and sometimes deadly.
It is rare for anyone to be able to tell which of his personalities are at the forefront, unless you make him angry. It's best to simply not make him angry.
Halshey is looking for someone to train to take over half the running of the aqueducts for him. A partner. With his only son banished to the Takula Outpost, he wishes to sire another but currently has very little time to himself.

Aqueduct Foreman Apprenticeship

Job Description:
As an apprenticeship Foreman you will learn all there is to know about the Riverfall Aqueduct system. Halsey is looking for someone confident, and dedicated to completing their training.

0 - 6 months: During the first 6 months, you will work alongside the general aqueduct system workers, learning where everything is and how everything works. During this initial period, you will also assist the aqueduct system manager for one hour a day, helping them to oversee the aqueduct workers and to ensure that the main reservoirs are kept running, while the site foreman arranges the siphoning for the overnight reservoir. 6gm a day.

6 months - 1 year: By this point you should know your way around the aqueduct systems well enough, and the site foreman will begin instructing you on the more intricate area's. This will include the cleaning of the green marble pillars, the maintenance of the Bluevein siphons and repairing any damage that the system workers have noted throughout the day.
You will assist in keeping the log books up to date, including the health of the work force, any accidents, wage packets, and damage to the aqueducts. 7gm a day.

1 - 2 years: After the first year you will be given charge of the night team. Longer hours as you will still be required to liaise with the aqueduct foreman, however you have your own team. This is a sign of responsibility and trust, it is also a new challenge. You will be required hone your leadership skills to ensure that your men are working swiftly, efficiently and safely, while making sure moral stays high. The night time shift is the most hated position and it will be a unique challenge for you to maintain your teams enthusiasm. 8gm a day.

2 years +: After this point it will be the aqueduct foreman's decision on when to teach you your final lesson. To complete your apprenticeship you must learn to safely siphon the excess water into the heated reservoir ready for the night team to maintain. This is a dangerous task, and is always overseen by the aqueduct foreman. The reservoir is maintained at a temperature high enough to ensure severe scalding if anyone were to fall in, and if the water is transferred too swiftly, it has been known to splash up from the reservoir and injure workers. It cannot be rushed, and may take several months of training to learn the correct procedure. 9gm a day.

Once the aqueduct foreman decides that you have learnt how to siphon the purified water into the overnight reservoir, your apprenticeship is complete, a guaranteed position is waiting for you in the Riverfall aqueducts and a work schedule will be drawn up between yourself and Halsey. Your wage will go up to 10gm a day with two, non-consecutive, days holiday per week.

The Shadowhall

Image

The Shadowhall is a name known to few, and the few that know it know little of the place itself or of the importance of its existence. The true nature of the tunnel is known only to Akalak Elders and Drykas clan leaders, and even they prefer not to think of it unless necessary. The Sea of Grass is a dangerous place, and the worst threats do not come from the surface.

Tucked away in an obscure corner of the City Council Chambers is a curtain. It is rich red and pleasing to the eye, and on the opposite corner is a curtain exactly the same. In fact, unless one is aware of the purpose one would simply think they were for decoration, admire the artful placement, and continue on their merry way. But a few select individuals know that behind the left curtain is a door, narrow and simple, unremarkable in every way save for the symbol on the handle: an arch towering over three gems. Nowhere else does this symbol appear, in the Council Chambers or the city of Riverfall, for those that claim the mark as their own do not associate with its denizens.

The door leads into a tunnel, and even in the middle of the day light will quickly be swallowed up by darkness. It is wise to bring a torch, but keeping one's hand on the right wall and following it would suffice in a pinch. The tunnel heads straight into the cliff upon which Riverfall is built, and the tunnel is frigid no matter what season it is.

The tunnel turns and twists, but after half an hour's brisk walk a light will be visible from roughly fifty yards ahead. Upon approaching the air will warm noticeably and the blackness lifts to reveal a hall of pillars stretching into the unknown. At the hall's threshold is a marble basin of water centered by a green pillar carved in the likeness of an upside-down face. The traveler must sit and wait here; the pillars are connected by powerful shields to create an invisible maze, and it is far too easy to become lost when it is impossible to see the walls.

No one is quite sure who built this hall, for there was no record of it before the Valterrian. Some say that it is the work of the Underwatch, but others say that the mysterious organization would have no time to make such things. Whatever the case, there is no doubt that this hall is a barrier between those that live in the above and that which dwells in the below. To go beyond the faced pillar without permission is almost certain to spell death, either at the hands of angry members of the Underwatch, starvation in the invisible maze or at the claws of the monsters that live there, and most everyone that visits the Shadowhall feels the statue's eyes upon them, watching them.

It can be hours, sometimes even days before the traveler is approached by one of three members of the Underwatch, and when they arrive they will expect the traveler to speak quickly; time is a luxury here.

NPCs
Image
Name: Feolan
Race: Drykas
DoB: Spring 495 AV
PoB: Endrykas
Title: Pathwarden of the Western Tunnels
Skills: 46 Bladed staff, 15 Shuriken, 29 Navigation, 42 Running
Gnosis: None

Like all members of the Underwatch, Feolan has no surname nor claims ties to any clan or pavilion. Recently reaching his one-year mark, he knows the passages around the Shadowhall rather well, if he does say so himself. With a bit of an ego, he frowns on "abovers" but tolerates them when needed. He is always the first to approach a traveler, and if the situation his dire he will fetch his superior.

Image
Name: Sunder
Race: Drykas
DoB: Winter 492 AV
PoB: Endrykas
Title: Pathguardian of the Western Tunnels
Skills: 67 Mace, 21 Dagger, 39 Wilderness Survival, 46 Running, 20 Observation
Gnosis: 1 mark of Semele

If Feolan cannot handle whatever situation arises then he will find Sunder. Born of a slave and a full Drykas, Sunder spent his life on the surface struggling to make his own status within his pavilion. Years passed without his effort bearing any real fruit, and his constant humiliation eventually convinced him to give up. He took to the Underpass, forsaking not only his last name but his first one as well and taking the name Sunder. His time underground has hardened him, and he will suffer no fool gladly. If his time it wasted, he may very well kill the messenger in annoyance.

Image
Name: Tensval
Race: Akalak
DoB: Fall 389 AV
PoB: Riverfall
Title: Pathmaster of the Western Tunnels
Skills: 94 Symenestran lash, 31 Shortsword, 40 Navigation, 38 Wilderness Survival, 52 Leadership
Gnosis: 1 mark of Semele, 1 mark of Akajia

One of the few Akalak to join the Underwatch and the only one that currently survives, Tensval's presence is imposing. He knows the world beneath like he knows his own body, and he knows his own body extremely well. Over a decade of battling the threats beneath has made him a powerful man as is reflected in his well-built physique. His gaze is one of utter and complete calm, which can be more unnerving than anger. In this world, his word is law and he lives that responsibility as naturally as he eats or breathes. It is rare for him to personally be needed; allowing the population of Riverfall to take shelter in his tunnels was the first, and it would take nothing less of a disaster to earn a second audience with him.

His other half, Jiensen, rarely if ever shows himself. Weak-willed, lethargic and greedy, it is always easy to spot him in place of his stronger and more disciplined personality. Centered around personal pleasure and a slave to his own wants and needs, his lack of mental strength make him rather easy for Tensval to suppress.

Access
The existence of the Shadowhall is a closely guarded secret of the Council, and not all of the Council members know the door's location. This means that your PC cannot "hear rumors" of it and automatically know where it is and how to get there. A person wishing to join the Underwatch can speak to a Council member and possibly earn the information.

The Bluevein Ruin

Image

Taking its name from the very river which flows above it, the Ruins entrance can be found within the Bluevein falls. A small opening can be found just behind the falls leading to great cavern. A single trickle of water runs from this cave and back out to join the falls which curtain the entrance. Darkness consumes this place, filling it to the brim with unknown dangers and mysteries. If one were to follow the trickle of water deeper into the unknown, soon one would notice this tiny trickle begin to widen, running deeper and cutting a passage through the stone. Without warning the hard rock and stone would be transformed taking on the appearance of a long abandoned building. Here in lies the Bluevein Ruins.

Structures far predating the valterrian stand almost untouched by the hands of time. Ancient magic is said to guard the place, carved into the very stone. Runes of all shapes and sizes spot and decorate the place. Halls of carved stone and stairs decorate the expanse where the trickle finally becomes of notable size. The hall is split in two, water being the great divider as it flows slowly out of the cave. The floor is smooth but constantly wet, slippery, and hazardous for anyone traversing them, and combined with the normal darkness of the place it isn’t a very welcoming place. The Bluevein River supplies the water which travels down the walls, and falls in droplets from the ceiling. The water pools in the center of the passageway and from there is swept out of the cave in a slow but steady current.

Lights can be seen randomly flickering in the distance, and voices could be heard calling out to those who wander the ruins. Sweet whispers carried on drafts seek out the ears and those who hear them cannot quite make out what is being said. Though its quite possible that all these things are the overactive imagination of those who stumble upon the place, others think that they are real occurrences, and if one would be brave enough to follow the lights and mysterious voice that says no words they will find a stone pillar.

Lone and oddly placed, and if examined, seemingly upside down, the pillar stands dead center of the passageway, rising out of the water. A face is carved into the stone, human in some ways not in others. It is this pillar which is the real mystery of the Bluevein ruin for it seems to be the source of all the strange phenomena which occurs at the ruin. Sparks of light jump from it randomly, spitting into the hallway, granting some lamination before disappearing again, and there seems to be a draft around it, always, a current of air flowing about the column. Perhaps too is the pillars fault for the current of water, as the cave is at no incline.

Nyava is what the more educated call the mystery pillar, naming it after the Nyavanni which is the civilization thought to have born these ruins. The pillar made of rock, yet showing hardly any wear from the water which constantly stains it, is still a mystery and its purpose lost with the passage of time.
“Method is more important than strength, when you wish to control your enemies. By dropping golden beads near a snake, a crow once managed to have a passer-by kill the snake for the beads.” ~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Bluevein Cave of the Gods

Image

Located right behind the great Bluevein waterfall this seemingly small cave from the outside expands to an extremely vaulted ceiling with stalagmites and stalactites growing everywhere. A large pool takes up most of the sparse room inside the cave. The pool can be a few inches deep to a many feet deep. Some like to swim or wade in the cool waters of the pool but few know what lurks deep down in the water. No one knows if the cave was man or nature made. Some saw man, looking at the strange structures that couldn’t possibly have been created by nature, but others say nature because the size of the stalagmites and stalagmites couldn’t possibly have begun to grow at the time where humans and other races roamed the ground. They think that the man-made structures appeared later in time.

Along the sides of the rough rock walls unlit torches and torch holders are placed. One can bring their own fire and light up the entire cave with about 20 or so torches. The wall is where the man-made sights are placed. Smooth rock walls, about 2 feet in height , surround the cave in a circle, using the natural wall as the second barrier. Inside this water from the waterfall and pool flow around and around the cave as if by magic. Every 50 feet or so a huge pillar is placed in the middle of the flowing water. The green pillars extend out at the bottom into a large round ball. All of these pillars bottoms are carved into the face of a God or Goddess such as Laviku, Makutsi and Lhex. There are 15 of these pillars that rest inside the ever-flowing water. Some believe that the magical pillars are blessed by the Gods and Godesses themselves along with every one blessed by Makutsi to keep the water flowing no matter the incline or descent. Unlike the pool in the center of the cave the water in the barrier is only an inch or so deep and when drunken seems clean and purified by the pillars as well. No matter what is put into the water, poison or something else, the water maintains its clear purified taste and has never been known to get anyone sick.

No one knows who built the water flow or the pillars or how the cave came into existence behind the waterfall. When walking into the cave the temperature goes down until it is notably chilly inside. The pool is still most of the time but every once in a while the pool will ripple even if there is no breeze. Almost everyone in Riverfall knows of the caves existence few have actually been here. The only way to get into the cave is to rock climb up the entrance which is dangerously close to the tons of water spilling down in the waterfall. It is not uncommon to hear of someone who has fallen and died trying to see the cave. The only other way to get to the cave is to fly, which only a handful of people can do.

Inside the cave you can see the rare bird who has wandered in and sometimes see a nest that it has built into the nooks of the cave wall. It only ever seems to be one bird that lives in the cave. This bird cannot be seen anywhere else and like the dark of the cave. Visitors can be greeted by the songs of these birds or the whispering of the unknown inside the cave. The cave has become one of the favorite for ghosts that wander around Riverfall and when visiting it is not uncommon to meet one of these deceased. They like visitors more or less.

For anyone who dares to get to the cave, the visit always ends in complete awe and most to get in again. Try to see anything they may have missed before. But unfortunately for them, the Gods seem to only let the person in one time. Either the entrance has disappeared from their sight or obstacles made them go back home when trying to climb back up. Riverfall suggests that you should get as much as you can on your first visit so you don’t need to return.

No guide has been appointed to the cave because of the only in one time rule. But the ghosts inside would be happy to show you around if you let them.

Image
Name: Pillar Bird
Description: The Pillar Bird resides exclusively inside the Bluevein Cave of the Gods. It mates with other Pillar Birds inside the expansive cave and nests inside the nooks of the cave walls. It bathes in the ever-flowing water of the Pillars and eats the small blind fish in the pool. They sing almost constantly and their voice is a high, squeaky song that when joined with all the other birds can be as nice as a beautiful woman singing. It is a magnificent sight to see all the birds flying around at once by the ceiling of the cave. They do this to greet visitors and their singing can stun anyone. These birds, because they are ever in the darkness, are blind and have developed a kind of sonar when singing to get around.

Vault of the Cerulean

Image

Shortly after the creation of the Takula Outpost, the Cerulean discovered an entrance to an underground ruin. At first, the Cerulean had wanted to tell the Council of Elders of their find, but eventually came to agreement that this should be a prize to themselves in their exile. The Takula Outpost was completed, and the entrance to the ruins hidden away within, one of the only secrets the disgraced men kept.

The ruins appeared as a long series of corridors, lined by fountains and aqueducts, many of which have dried up, they appeared as nothing more than an antiquated area from a people and time long since past. They are quite long, and it appears that they head in the direction of the city, and end beneath the walls, but no entrance or exit into the city proper has ever been located. The most unusual feature were the bright blue stone pillars with a face none recognized carved into base. The most common theory is that they are the images of a god long since dead or fallen from history, and the fact that they are upside down leads to speculation that whomever carved them, was opposed to this god. Several of the Cerulean patrol, investigate, and sate their curious and adventurous desires within this hall.

After the Djed Storm, many things within the hall changed. The fountains and aqueducts began to flow with water once more, clear and pure, their source indiscernible. The blue pillars changed to a shade of green reminiscent of jade, and began to glow and hum softly, seeming to brim with power. The Cerulean that entered the ruins, quickly found a much stronger challenge though. There were creatures, either born or awoken by the Djed Storm, and had been able to kill several of the elite warriors.

NPCs

Name: Venkork
Race: Akalak
DoB: Spring 54, 245 AV, 267 years
PoB: Riverfall
Title: Cerulean
Skills: Lakan 67, Leadership 54, Unarmed Combat 46, Stealth 42, Investigate 37
Gnosis: Night Stalking: 1

Venkork has been a Cerulean for much of his life, after his darker brother took a strong hold at a young age, and has never since relented. After several years of crimes, violence, and emotional outbursts, Venkork was branded Cerulean, and sent to the outpost. At first, he simply fell into line with the protection of the city from the outskirts, still losing control, but being maintained by his brethren within. After a handful of decades, Venkork found himself among the upper end of the unofficial hierarchy of the Cerulean, and used the ruins as his own personal meditation and training ground. After the Djed Storm, he was among the first to investigate the area and discover the creatures. He was able to fight them and survive, but many of those with him fell. He approached the Council, and informed them of the ruins and the dangers within.

He has a gruff demeanor, and is often easily annoyed when approached. He's not the type to go teaching, but he is a natural leader. This means he's likely to berate newcomers and tell them to improve and will not acknowledge them until they do. But in a true combat situation, he is often at the forefront of the fight, taking on enemies alongside his charges. Those who've worked alongside him for a while will begin to notice that he has a tendency to take on more enemies if it means protecting those around him. He doesn't have much respect for anyone higher ranking than him, and is quick to show it. The only exception is to the Council of Elders, because he has no desired to be truly exiled.

Ajiazac
Name: Ajiazac
Summary: Deadly Creatures Born of Shadows
Frequency: Rare, limited to the Vault only.
Major Features: Shadowy details, shape-shifting
Abilities: Able to damage a body and shadow equally.
Most Common In: Vault of the Cerulean

Not much is known of these deadly creatures that reside within the ruins. They appear to be made of a substance akin to shadows, but look thicker, with a cloth-like texture. They come in many natural forms, usually of Akalak themselves or animals in the nearby vicinity, but lack all of the minute details, appearing more of an outline than anything else. These creatures possess the normal strength, speed, and physical abilities of the creature they mimic. Any special abilities however, such as the ability for speech, dual personalities, magic, etc, are all seemingly beyond the creature.

They do however, maintain a single ability that makes them much more dangerous than those they mimic. They have the ability to attack directly, and consume a person's shadow. This could involve stabbing, biting, slashing at a person's shadow, and the individual would find the wounds inflicted upon their shadow, would manifest themselves upon their body. This results in an extremely difficult style of fighting to counter these enemies, as the glowing pillars cast a dull light all around the area, multiplying, stretching, manipulating all shadows.

Night Stalkers will find that they are able to understand communications between the creatures themselves, but will find all attempts to speak to the creatures falling on deaf ears. They also find that their own shadows are immune to attacks from the creatures, even if their physical bodies are not. Powerful light sources will weaken the creature, but will never destroy it. Venkork discovered that in order to destroy the creature, you must trap it with powerful light, thus weakening it, and then stab or crush the space in the direct center of its body.

Special Note
Prior to the Djed Storm of Spring 512 AV, only Cerulean will know of this location. After the Storm, whispers of its existence will spread throughout the populace but will never fully be considered public knowledge.

[Riverfall Activity] Weekly Development Design Contest!

Postby Gossamer on June 18th, 2012, 8:26 am

This weeks winner is: Khasr!

Khasr! He was chosen because he utilized a theme that unites two cultures and allows for a place that can be seemingly discovered via tunnels from the Cyphrus plain and known to the city council.

He earns his choice of:

A player can claim 50 Perks Points to be used in the The Perk Points Center, opt for an item from the Perks Grab Bag, and finally a player can just simply claim 100 gold for that character they posted the winning entry from. All Perks Points or Grab Bag items are subject to The Player Perk Center rules.

Plus 15 Perk Points for going above and beyond creating three NPCs for the location.

A Few Reasons Why Others Stood Out Or Weren't Chosen:

Of course, there can only be one winner. However, a great many of you came up with really cool locations. Sometimes It was just a minor detail that set yours as 'impossible'.

Summer: You did a fantastic job of designing this location. However, Riverfall has a huge water supply so it truly has no need for aqueducts. Basically waterfalls all over the city (it is the city of waterfalls remember?) supply water diverted off the main Bluevein Falls for all sorts of reasons and this eliminates the need for man-made structures. Also, with Mizahar's technology level, I think the concept of 'purified water' is somewhat unheard of... everyone thinks if cows arent urinating in it upstream its pure enough. I loved the Makutsi touch though.. that was very very nice and it made me really long to overlook the aqueduct features... but that'd be silly of me. PS. Your NPC looks scary bright blue like that!

Jaspayia: It was a hard decision between you and Khasr. I almost picked yours. However, the real deciding factor was the fact that again these were aqueducts and they were pre-Valterrian ruins. I loved your NPC and I think if you could come up with a non-aqueduct theme for ruins with this same description I'd love to give you perk point credits and put it in RF as a location outside the city gates. Any sort of cave ruins would do. If you would have made this a secret shrine to the River goddess ran by the Cerulean or something far different than what the others did in essence, you would have won hands down.

Great effort folks. You guys did amazingly well!

Rayage: Again, great writeup. However, the Cyphrus plain did not exist pre Valterrian and neither did the Suvan Sea so its seems to me virtually impossible to have intact pre-Valterrian structures underground in Riverfall. I love the sparks and light play, I think that really gave it character but again I wish it didn't have the pre-Valterrian aspect. I loved the Nyava aspect too.

Syrah: Great effort too. I loved the pillar bird and urge you to turn it in as some other aspect to RF. I think the one-at-a-time rule is a bit hard to enforce, but I liked your overall description.
