Character history
Kaendas was born in Zeltiva as the son of a simple family of fishermen. As he grew up, he also became a fisherman, just like his parents. He didn't choose to be one, but there was very little other choice for him. For the most part, his youth consisted of going out fishing in the early mornings, and selling his catch later on in the afternoons. He knew little else of the world up until a series of unfortunate events forced him to abandon the fisherman's life at the age of 19. Desperately looking for a job, Kaendas agreed to work for a wealthy seafaring merchant as one of his sailors/guards. The merchant made a living by trading goods with various remote cities accessible by sea. A new world opened up before Kaenda's eyes. He started to see other parts of the world other than the cold and boring docks of Zeltiva. He still remembers his first trip, a voyage to Mura during the summer.
The change of scenery was a marvelous sight for Kaendas and something he'd never forget. That day, and the many days that followed as part of the merchant's crew, changed him. The young Zeltivan sailor developed an immense interested in travelling and seeing other cities and cultures. He often spent the little free time he had with reading about distant places and their odd cultures and scenery. Not that he had much time or even the money to spend much on such interests though. His working hours were long and his pay was low. Kaendas decided to do something about the latter and started to smuggle some wares of his own back and forth between the trading posts that he visited with the fleet. A very risky operation that undermined his employer's trust and influence. Something which he paid for very dearly when it was found out.
Fired, punished, and lucky to be alive, Kaendas left the ruthless merchant's employ. But it wasn't all for nothing. At least the years of service in the fleet thought him some valuable things about trade and commerce. He started a humble trading business of his own but that didn't last long, unfortunatelly. He was quickly driven out of business and given a bad reputation by his former employer. Since there was no way Kaendas was able to compete around Zeltiva anymore, the aspiring merchant sold most of his belongings and departed Zeltiva as soon as the first opportunity arose. Where he'd end up and whether he would survive the harsh times ahead, was up to the gods now.
