Tourmal, Spring 41, 512 AV

After their last session they made plans to spar again before Orion was too sore to back out. Hopefully it was a long enough wait for him to recover. After all carrying two sets of leather and an iron staff was quite a feat for someone as slight as he. He will fill out though and his endurance will grow. This time he had one less set of armor to carry If he was smart he would have them on before he got to the sparring site.

Tourmal had he knew that if he hadn't his arms would likely be much more tired than they should be for a proper sparring session. The only thing that would make it worse was if he had worked a full day before hand. That however was not the case. Occasionally he took off a day here and there to spend the day advancing his hammer skills.

The day was nice and cool. There was a breeze that occasionally came by and left the man feeling fresh. It would prove beneficial while they were sweating buckets in their armor. After he arrived he loosened the straps to his armor and removed it until Orion arrived. Leather armor in the sun would make anyone sweat. Especially after a bit of a walk. The man brought a water-skin he had filled earlier. He hoped he wouldn't have to dip into it until the fighting stopped but he already felt the thirst hitting

After a few gulps of cool water his thirst was abated and he stood tall waving his arms to increase ventilation. His pits were damp with sweat so the man did all he could to cool and dry off. When Orion approached Tourmal only stopped to wave at the man “Are you ready for another round?” He smiled at the man approaching, he hoped that today the two of them would engage longer than last time. He then donned his leather and tightened the straps to reduce chafing, leggings and all.

Doctor versus Smithy, Round 2 (Orion)

Orion

Their sparring had been quite short last time, but a few chimes, if that, but it felt horrible for days afterwards. Orion was a doctor, not a fighter. He wasn't sure what he was doing, and to top it all off, his room at the Traveler's Row was filled with 'guests', regardless of the fact that he'd paid extra to have a double room to himself. Everyone had to band together now, right? Selfish thoughts needed pushed aside, and Syliras had to be rebuilt. Orion also couldn't forget the reason why they were doing this. Sparring. Learning to fight better. Learning to protect. The blue eyed man knew it was likely to be nothing more than a passing phase for him, but maybe it was how he could cope. Regardless, Tourmal was quite enthusiastic about their continued training. It seemed that the Drykas man didn't have too much opportunity in the walled city.

Orion had strapped on his leather armor before making his way to their agreed upon training area. He needn't wear down his arms before they even got there. The heavy metal staff was tiresome enough. Using it much like a walking stick, however, made it much easier to make the trek to their sparring session. Thankfully, in order to fight fatigue, Orion remembered a full water skin of his own.

Once he arrived, Orion looked up at Tourmal, nodding in greeting. The man was much stronger than he was, and more skilled with his weapon. He wondered if it was a thing of pride for the Drykas. Tourmal had met precious few of the horsemen, but their personalities were all quite varied. A love of weapons seemed to be a common trait for them all, though. "I suppose I am ready, friend. I think I even managed to get my armor on correctly."

After grounding his waterskin, Orion moved so he was about ten feet away from his sparring partner and readied his weapon. He had fantasized about all sorts of spectacular maneuvers he would be able to perform using the staff, but his roommates were less enthused about his practicing, so maybe he would see if he could do them here.

For now, Orion waited for Tourmal's acknowledgement that he was ready.

“Aye, seems you did.” he said casually inspecting his friend while equipping his own armor that his friend had so graciously provided him. The doctor was ready to get started immediately, he wasn't completely surprised he thought that if he just walked all that way with his armor on he would want to get this done with too. Once finished he pulled out his hammer and took a defensive stance ready to retreat as soon as soon as Orion attacked. He looked over his friend as he did so.

The man although soft was down to business something that likely transferred over from his profession of being a doctor. The look on his face was serious and focused. That was something that raised Tourmal's respect for the man. Then the smithy raised his left hand and beckoned his friend to initiate an attack.

Doctor versus Smithy, Round 2 (Orion)

Orion

Orion gave his friend a nod, acknowledging that he too was ready to commence with their fight. Rushing forward, stave in hand, Orion lashed out with a two handed swing, coming right to left. Tourmal, having been prepared to his initial assault would be easily able to avoid this crushing blow to the side, moving backwards as he planned. The force of Orion’s swing caused him to spin in a circle in place. Attempting to regain his balance, the doctor stumbled backwards, thrusting the weapon ineffectively forward to attempt and dissuade an immediate retaliation.

He rolled his shoulders, moving into a defensive position, waiting for the smith to counter. If he came into range, he’d swing low with the left side of his staff, only to quickly bring a powerful blow down towards his head with the now raised part of his weapon.

His first swing was wide and hard. After the smith stepped back the momentum kept the man moving swinging around in a circle. He consecutively lost his footing. That was when Tourmal charged in. Suddenly the man thrust his staff forward, so Tourmal stopped his advance. When the doctor regained his footing he set his feet again.

At first the smith waited for a second to see if he was preparing for an attack or if he was defending. He seemed defensive and after a few seconds of inactivity he deduced he was correct. The drykas overlooked his opponent. He hoped that he could push in on the mans defenses enough to throw him off. But he would have to see after he tried if it would work or not. He needed to test the man and look for weak spots. Unfortunately being so new to sparring he was pretty much oblivious to what they were. Unless he lost his footing again he would not likely find any, despite the abundance of openings.

Tourmal begun his advance closing the distance between the two as the man in front of him swung his stave low at his feet he saw it coming easily enough and swatted it away with the haft of his hammer. The force only added to the doc's next strike. The momentum of the opposite side of the staff came down on Tourmal catching him on his shoulder forcing him to take a knee. Being desperate to keep the doctor from continuing his onslaught the man swung his hammer at the Orion's ankles and tried to pull his legs out from underneath him.

Doctor versus Smithy, Round 2 (Orion)

Orion

Orion's eyes darted all over and around his foe. He was generally aware of what was going on, and he could somewhat anticipate what people were going to do, what they were planning to do, what they were thinking, what they were feeling. That had yet to translate to combat for the doctor, so Tourmal's retaliations to Orion's attacks were all but unreadable to the blue eyed man. Feeling somewhat smug over his successful attack, the doctor looked down at the Drykas man. While they were somewhat the same height, the Drykas man was considerably broader. It did wonders for his confidence to drive him to the ground.

Of course, it was short lived.

A hammer caught the back of his ankle, and suddenly he was staring at the sky. "Shhhhhyyyk-" His exclamation was cut short as his back collided with the ground, forcing the breath from his lungs. This one was going to hurt in the morning. Or now, rather.

Seeing Tourmal at his feet now, Orion kicked out half heartedly, trying to force him back, scrambling to get to his feet. He'd lost all momentum he held in his fight, and now he had to do what he could just to not get knocked out cold by that hammer.

As the man fell back he yelled “Shhhhhyyyk!” That is until he hit the ground. The man's kicks were pathetic, however he didn't expect much more from the man. The smith swatted the doc's half hearted kicks away as he would a swarm of flies. However the kicks did keep him from continuing his attack. Instead he took a step back and let the man right himself.

The man watched his friend closely and though to go on the offensive again. If he could not stop him from landing hits hopefully he would just wear the man out from exhaustion. Tourmal kept his eye on the upper end of the staff as he approached in anticipation of how the doctor would react.

Doctor versus Smithy, Round 2 (Orion)

Orion

Orion’s desperate attempts to keep Tourmal at bay with his kicks seemed to well enough, as wild and inaccurate as they were. His sparring partner appeared to be extremely cautious, not wanting to get struck by a lucky blow. It was slightly surprising, as Orion figured the Drykas man had considerably more combat experience than he did. Perhaps he was just testing out what the doctor could truly do, or maybe he was just taking it easy on the scrawny man. That possibility was much more likely in the blue eyed man’s mind.

After taking a moment to regain his breath, Orion used the staff to help himself back to his feet. Tourmal had given him distance, taken a step back, and allowed Orion to stand. It was no fight to the death, but Orion imagined, if he ever had to really use this weapon, that whatever attacking him would be unlikely to give him the space he needed in order to recover. He’d have been dropped to the ground, floundered hopelessly, and a hammer or whatever tool of death his foe was using would have crushed him, sliced him, ended him. He couldn’t protect anyone that way. He couldn’t protect anyone now.

Slight annoyance in his features, Orion resumed his wide base, slowly advancing on Tourmal with probing, testing, thrusts of the heavy staff. He’d yet to figure out what the proper way to stand when using this weapon. Currently his balance was nearly nothing, though his hands were for the most part correct. It allowed for little power behind his attacks, but attack he would. After a few feign blows, he brought the staff up about a foot, brought it down at a diagonal angle towards Tourmal’s side, then quickly moved the weapon horizontally away from the blonde man, only to return with a second strike. Both blows were with the leading end of the weapon, but after the second weak attack, he reversed and came with another level blow from the opposite side, using the reverse end of his stave.

Tourmal, Spring 41, 512 AV

After the Orion righted himself he looked a bit perturbed. Tourmal imagined that he was upset at his progress. The smith would have said the same for himself. The man wasn't progressing as he wished. And despite his greater experience he still could not avoid Orion's strikes. Something was different about him than the others he had trained with. It could have been his inexperience. The man was a wild card. Or it could be his lack of strength. 'Nah' he thought to himself. If anything his opponents lack of strength would give him an advantage. Or it could be the weapon.

The drykas made his advance watching his opponent. The doctor feigns which made the smithy flinch he connected with a diagonal swing in the side. The attack caught him off guard and would likely leave a light bruise. His natural reaction was to cover the attacked spot immediately. This helped in that the doctor tried for a second strike in the same spot and he blocked the blow with the haft of his hammer. He was focused on the end that was in the doctors right hand and didn't see the next strike from the opposing end coming. The doctor landed another strike this time the attack was with his left hand and had landed on the smith's right side. This attack would not leave any marks. But Tourmal had had enough of being hit, and took to offense. 'So much for outlasting him.'

The man raised his hammer up and to his right then swung diagonally toward his opponents shoulder. Afterward he stepped forward with his left food and placed it between the mans legs then shifted his weight forward putting it behind his left shoulder which he dropped forward and attempted to knock the man on the ground. Once grounded he planned on pouncing on his prey once atop his friend he would raise his hammer for the final blow. But plans don't always work the way they are intended now do they?
