Aidara
Hello Mizaharians,
March's Featured Character is the lovely Aidara. Hers is the typical case of a PC who's become so familiar to the community and us Founders that we all thought she had already received this award a long time ago. So let's all congratulate her and enjoy the monthly interview, prettily formatted with code I stole from her CS.

Let's start from the very beginning. Who's Aidara? How would you introduce her to your friends and family, and how would she introduce herself? Can you visualize her business card?
I like to think that Aidara is passion embodied, though the more common way it has been said is “Drama Queen”. Just about the only thing she doesn’t speak openly about are her insecurities, and I’ve always thought she had a very refreshing sort of what-you-see-is-what-you-get type persona, a sort of honesty that is hard to find these days in either Role Play or Real Life. However, that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have dynamics. In fact, she has the social abilities to neatly separate which parts of her personality are appropriate in which situations… that is, until she gets flustered, upset or just simply too excited.
To my friends and family, I would describe Addy as the sweetest little berry of the bunch. Bubbly and energetic, she is ridiculously easy to get along with and an absolute delight. The set up would probably be some sort of dinner where we come in late so she could indulge her unconscious love for the dramatics and make some sort of memorable entrance. Riding in on a giant Eagle could be one way.
Addy herself would do things more simply and introduce herself as Addy, Endal Aidara or Healer Aidara. If the individual were attractive (or, some people may argue that they only have to be moving and breathing), she would probably tend towards the more forward approach of simply flinging herself at them. In a perfect world, she would be made up and scantily clothed at the time.
Her business card would be simple. Probably some kind of emerald green color with a sensual silhouette of herself featured with the words “Healing by Aidara”… That’s a lie.
Addy’s business card would simply say “For a good time, call…”
Addy is one of the early Inarta, back when the world was still young, taxes weren't so high and people showed more respect to their elders. What made you choose the gingers back then and do you think it still applies to someone starting one today?
To be honest, when I first joined Mizahar I was 50/50 between making an Inarta and a Kelvic. I wanted to make a horse Kelvic because, at the time, there weren’t any.
The deciding factor was Amanda. We joined together and she was also torn between Kelvic and Inarta. However, we decided we wanted to play together and the Inarta lore states that twins are common occurrences. And thus, Aidara and Sairque were born.
However, the main reason why I chose Inarta to begin with (because I think I would have decided to go Ginger even if Sairque hadn’t existed) was because when I read the lore, Aidara just appeared in my mind. There was no sitting, thinking, or developing process. She was just there. I loved their wild, rustic, passionate, and bold qualities. It was a very intriguing combination along with their treacherous mountain home. It was obvious they loved life and wanted to live it to its fullest despite the dangers they put themselves in with every passing tick. That hasn’t changed one speck, and I think it definitely still applies today.
Has Addy changed significantly over the course of your stay in Mizahar? Would you call it evolution? Do you think she has the potential to undergo more changes or is she relatively fixed in her values and outlook?
I have redone Addy’s Character Sheet probably a million and a half times. In fact, I had some Founders laughing at me because her first post has been edited over 81 times (I didn’t understand the preview button). However, despite all the changes I haven’t touched the description of Aidara that I originally wrote.
I am quite proud that, upon going back and reading my description of her, she almost exactly the same. She has grown and developed a more complex personality, but the fundamentals are still there. I am one of those crazies that believe my PC speaks to me and I just write her words, so it’s a great feeling to realize that she told me who she was, and it’s stayed consistent throughout my play. It makes me feel as if I have a really good handle of who she is.
So yes, I would call it evolution. Aidara has become a better “her”. Her insecurities are no longer whether or not she’ll become an Endal, because that dream has been realized. Instead, they focus around her relationship and her child. Her goals have grown and developed with what she’s been through.
I would say her personality is pretty concrete at this point. However, I still think that she has the potential to undergo more change. She has been a healer for an awfully long time, and I know she itches for more. Her dedication leaves her grounded in Wind Reach, but you never know whats going to happen…
It's no mystery that you enjoy playing your characters quite "straight" and faithful to their racial concepts. As an Inarta, Addy is definitely not the shy or reserved type. Still, what traits are most uniquely Aidara-ish and separate her from being just another Inarta? In other words, how do you achieve uniqueness while staying true to the spirit of the race?
This question left me sitting here for quite a while trying to figure it out. I’ve advocated playing a race to its lore quite a lot lately, and quite loudly. I was practically yelling in that video, and foaming at the mouth with rage
I feel like I need a super awesome answer for this one but…
It’s very simple. Addy embodies the Inarta to a great degree. Part of what makes her up is her need to fit in, which leads back around to how Inarta-ish she is. I think it’s her compassion and her acceptance of people that sets her apart. She still has a bit of that xenophobic racism going on, as well as Casteism, but I think that she is much more likely than her peers to look at someone and see how he or she can potentially benefit her, the situation, or the city.
And she’ll totally sleep with anything that moves. Male, Female, Jamoura, Akalak… In fact, my personal goal is to have her love on every race before Orion Michaels does. He’s her biggest competition. I know it’s in the lore that Inarta are touchy-feely, but its surprisingly underplayed as a character trait among the gingers. You can never have too much love. Spread it around. A lot.
What challenges do you face in being a largely stationary PC who doesn't move around? How do you keep things from getting boring? Do you have any advice for those nomadic PCs who hop from city to city in search of excitement?
I think a lot of people are scared to even consider attempting a stationary PC, and I actually have quite a strong view on this as well. Who would have guessed?
By not moving around, I had to develop Addy, and it’s as simple as that. Instead of punting her from city to city, I was able to really form a solid foundation for her by sticking to Wind Reach and having to develop her character rather than depending solely on new environments and experiences to give her something to do. Her relationship with Sira is really strong and complex because of this.
I don’t think there is anything wrong with city hopping, especially if the character is really just a nomad or has a thirst for adventure. But I would suggest to everyone to take some time and develop your PC by themselves. You can’t depend on everyone else to give you a plot, whether it’s other PC’s or Cities. You have to be able to create them yourself, with your own PC, if you want them to survive in the long run.
The next couple of questions are about the other PCs in Addy's life. Tell us about Sira - we already know her version from various scrapbooks, but what's your take on your PC's relationship and what keeps it going?
Sira sira sira… How hot is she? She’s definitely the super attractive one in the relationship.
Sira and Addy’s relationship was explosive. The thread in which they met was completely coincidental. It was a thread of Sairque’s that she had with Sira. Since the twins were never far apart, I asked if I could join. I had no idea who Sira was, but once the characters started to interact… well, it was instant love. There was a connection between us as writers and an undeniable one between the PCs. I think the thing that makes them so dynamic and strong is that we didn’t force it, we didn’t plan it and neither of us was specifically looking for our PC’s to be in a relationship. It just happened naturally.
The thing that keeps it going is the fact that Ron and I aren’t afraid to get down and dirty. We torture our poor PC’s to no end; at one point I was seriously considering killing off their daughter. We also let the relationship maintain a natural flow. Right now the women are fighting and really unhappy with each other. They aren’t married or bonded past the Kelvic and Endal bonding, but if they could get a divorce they would be really close to it at this point… and we’re rolling with it and having fun, working it into our plot as we go.
I have to advocate that the biggest, biggest reason why it works is because we both aren’t afraid to take risks. It keeps the relationship alive.
Conversely, how do you deal with people vanishing on you? That's a major concern and a roadblock for so many PCs who come to rely on other PCs only for them to stop posting. How do keep it from affecting your own enjoyment?
When I first joined Mizahar I threaded with EVERYBODY. Everyone. I didn’t care who you were or who your PC was. If you were in Wind Reach, I wanted a thread. Because of that, I am very, very used to threads getting dropped on me. In fact, I had Gossamer grade some of my threads and it got to the point where her only comment after the grade was “You really have to start completing some threads, Aidara.” I had to laugh.
It’s hard to cope when someone drops out on you. It makes you a guarded writer, someone who doesn’t really want to play with anyone new so you don’t set up this really awesome story only to be let down. But it gets easier, once you learn the ropes. Instead of throwing important plot points into a random thread with a random newbie, I would instead break the ice with them by doing some kind of training thread. Those can be easily picked up after your partner drops. I learned to save the important threads and plots for those PC’s that I knew were going to stick around for a while and who my character had grown to know and trust, even as I got to know and trust the writer.
Being abandoned on a thread will never be easy, but sometimes it will go even further than that, and it’s not always the new people that do it. Sairque is no longer with Addy. As a writer I have no idea if the twins will write together again, though my fingers will always be crossed. That alone could have completely destroyed my concept in a single blow, with how entwined the characters were. But it was instead a learning experience.
You have to expect that other peoples lives aren’t going to match up with yours and that you have to sort of expect in the corner of your mind that it’s always a possibility. You can’t let it completely derail you. If someone dropping out entirely derails you and your PC, then I want to direct you back up to question #5.
How do you get in the mood for playing Addy? Do you have a favorite soundtrack or some other ritual that helps you focus on her? Is Addy a color, a sound, a verse from a song?
Addy is ridiculously exhausting to write for. Every time I do a post for her, I have to take a break between the next one. She puts so much of herself into everything she does, that no matter what I am writing about it is very emotional. Emotional writing is very draining on the writer…. Or at least me. So to be in the mood to write Addy, I pretty much have to be prepared to sit down and be punched in the gut by whatever she is feeling and be able to channel that into words.
Whenever I write I listen to Harry Potter Soundtracks. Don’t hate, appreciate. I’ve found that I need a calm and relatively quiet environment to be able to write for her. Concentration is key; if I don’t have complete silence, that’s when the headphones and the Harry Potter music comes in handy.
Addy is most definitely red and green. But don’t think Santa Claus. Instead think….. emerald wrapped in flames wrapped in velvet. Tough, smoldering, sexy. Interestingly enough, I’ve never matched a song or a verse to her. I’m not good at those kind of connections, and I always end up saying something stupid like… Back in Black.
Yeah, totally Back in Black.
Have you ever had what Tvtropes calls a Crowning Moment of Awesome with Addy? Can you imagine what a future one could be and, if so, are you working to make it happen?
First I have to admit that I needed to Google this and/or phone a friend.
Now that I know, I can confidently say that it was when Addy, about to be sucked out into the nothingness of space, flew through the air and got stuck on Xalet. Tentacles were everywhere, people were dying, and she was groping an Akalak’s abs.
How do you reconcile being a healer and being a trained huntress who will use that bow if she has to? Does it ever create inner conflict and has it ever caused her trouble?
Luckily for the little lady, she hasn’t had to deal with that much. Except for that time she pushed a man off the side of a mountain and killed him, and then regretted it immediately afterwards.
Overall, she just tries to avoid hunting all together. She is Endal, and she helps Sira out with a lot of the duties but she actually really mostly does the job of an Avora, spending most of her time in the Infirmary and keeping it running. When she does hunt, she tries to use traps so that she can bring the animal back alive and someone else can do the slaughtering.
When she has killed, it has been a mess. An utter and complete mess. Crying, boogers, lots of flailing and throwing herself dejectedly into corners. She’s never really delt with the guilt all that well. Being onl singly marked at this point, the psychological effects of her harming another creature aren’t that great… yet. She surely does beat herself up enough to make up for it though.
However, Ivak, a surprise to me as the writer, has recently marked the little healer as I wasn’t aiming for that Gnosis at all. I see this as a very interesting turn of events that could quite possibly turn her off the path of the Healer.
Addy can rule the world for a day. What happens?
Everyone immediately falls in love with her and wants nothing to do but give her gifts and lavish her with attention. Gold Miza’s now sport her face and are called Godlen Aidara’s instead.
Her dream of Eywaat and Ivak coming to sweep her off her feet is realized and they raise her to the level of Supreme Reigning Goddess.
Then, it’s a giant party with never ending supplies of alcohol and love.
Finally, Xalet shows up and confesses his love to her to be greater than anything he ever felt for Priskil and they live happily ever after. Nothing productive is accomplished Mizahar-wide because the little woman has never left her little city and she could care less about everyone else.
The soapbox is yours, Miss. The guy in the red sweater is still being noisy, but we can silence him. This space is all yours! Is there anything you'd like to share with the community and Google [Bot]?
You should ask many more questions, red sweater man! The pressure is on and I have nothing interesting to say!
I’ve always felt that Addy looked a little lame compared to all these power players out there. She has no overbearing abilities nor is she traveled or experienced in the ways of adventures. All of her little problems are homespun things that don’t really affect the rest of the world.
However, I still think she is awesome, and it tickles me to no end to have her be recognized. She deserves it, and that has nothing to do with me being the writer.
That said… I think everyone should come to Wind Reach and hang out. We’ll have a giant party and I’ll even loan out my Wind Eagle for free rides. She doesn’t bite and has the sweetest personality. Totally kid friendly.
I’m sorry this was ridiculously long. I can’t say things shortly. If you read this far, then I love you.
