Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

Vanator watched the interaction between Giliman and Riaris, well Recoomas, though Van had not officially met his friend's darker side. The Drykas did not retreat, though he did not move in on Gilaman. The man was desperate, and may do something foolish like harm the woman. Reason would tell the fugitive that such an mistake would mean certain death, but Gilaman was desperate for escape, desperate men did desperate things.

The Akalak seethed a response, an offer that would deliver Gilaman for justice. Vanator knew his friend well enough to know the champion's belt meant nothing to him. Riaris was about justice. Van remembered his fury when Leo Varniak went unpunished when Riverfall had the perpetrator of Ivak's release and the catastrophic djed storm in their hands. No, Vanator's friend meant to deliver swift, lethal judgement against the treacherous man. Vanator concurred.

The Drykas met the Riverian's significant darting glance, understanding in his eyes. He would back up his friend. Vanator cast a warning glare upon the gathered crowd, admonishing them back with a wave of his hand. Riaris was of The Kuvay'Nas, and had the authority to act on behalf Riverfall, as they all would know.

Keen eyes returned to the two men, the strain and fatigue of the tournament fight waning as adrenaline once again invigorated Vanator's body. He was ready for whatever followed in the tense stand off.

Recoomas stared at the man, back down to the belt, and over towards Vanator. The Drykas' thoughts were right, as nice as the belt was, it held no honor and to the fact that there was never a declared winner, any real warrior knew what that meant. To be the best, one had to defeat them, and on this day Recoomas couldn't say that he had done so.

What was happening now was a tactic to try and get the fiend away from the woman before they attacked him. Recoomas had no problem chasing him through the gates and beyond to bring him to his own personal form of justice, but what was more important was the life of the woman. Again he glanced to Vanator before turning back to look upon the vile man hiding behind a tiny woman.

"Let her go, and you have my word, and honor that I will lead you to the gates, and to your freedom. I will help you escape, however...if you do not move here and now our deal is off. They are coming for you and I won't fight off an entire army for a bit of gold. Now move!"

Recoomas was getting impatient, it wasn't that the Akalak was too eager to rip out the man's face, but he didn't want to mob to get to him first. No, this fight was for him and Vanator, they deserved to finish him. Ready yourself Drykas, our time is near.

Spring Tournament Finale

Rushed to action, Gilaman swallowed hard and momentarily tightened his grip on the woman, who gasped in turn. This whole situation had gone entirely south, but now was the time for action. One lasat time, he ran through his options.

He couldn’t run; he’d get cut down before he made it to the gate. Maybe he could nab a sword on the way, but even he couldn’t make it through an entire crowd of people.

He couldn’t carry the woman out; she couldn’t protect him from all sides and it wouldn’t be hard to pick him off with an arrow or just cut him down from behind. Even if he did make it out of the gate, he’d not only be on the run for deceiving the city - an offense he had a slim chance of them forgetting – but he’d be pursued for taking one of their precious women.

If only he’d had an accomplice… If that double-crossing snake probably still standing in the arena had just kept his mouth shut, they both would have been well on their way to riches by now.

The thoughts flew in the span of a few heartbeats, and in the next breath, Gilaman was back to the present. There was no getting around it now. He had to trust this Akalak’s greed and self-honor would preserve him now. Achingly slow, he pulled the knife from the woman’s neck. When it was barely past her chin, she ducked under his arm and stumbled to the edge of the crowd to his right, immediately enveloped by comforting arms, where she burst into noisy tears.

Swallowing again, he widened his arms and dropped the knife with a sharp clatter against the cobblestones. ”I…I surrender,” he stuttered, looking more at the crowd, particularly where the woman had disappeared. ”Uh…take me away?”

Van's eyes darted between Gilaman and Riaris, though there was a subtle difference in the Akalak, a darker demeanor that suggested his brother was now dealing with the traitor. Vanator crept closer, muscles still coiled to act. He left Racoomas to negotiate with Gilaman, the Riverian had the authority, and right, to determine the course of action. Vanator would support his friend, and ensure the Konti was released unharmed. The Drykas looked again to the fuming Akalak. Something told him that Gilaman would be granted no mercy, it was just a matter of who got to him first, the mob or Racoomas.

Gilaman finally accepted the impossibility of his precious escape, and released the woman. The knife followed, discarded. Van took a step closer, eyes darting to the Kuvay'Nas warrior to see what his next move would be, and what fate Gilaman would meet.

Recoomas was just about to change his mind and call for Vanator to flank the man and they would just take him down at once. If they had, the woman might be injured, but Recoomas had filled himself with the confidence that he could get to her sooner than the man could kill her. Finally he made a decision and allowed the woman to flee. Now was the time to take him out.

"Let's get going. Hands behind your back."

Recoomas glanced at Vanator and nodded, he was sure that the Drykas wanted to beat the man down just as bad as everyone else in the city. The darker Akalak gestured with his finger for the man to turn around and walk and followed behind him. He was stalking him, one hand lifted to pull the belt from his shoulder and drop it on the ground.

He took up his lakan again and moved to one side of Giliman and motioned for Vanator to get to the other side. "Giliman it's time that you pay for your crimes against the city." He spoke quickly and raised a heavy arm and brought it down upon the back of the man's head.

Spring Tournament Finale

Postby Magpie on January 13th, 2014, 9:26 pm

Gilaman’s heart was pounding in his ears as he slowly slid his hands behind his back. He began to walk slowly, even the righteous Drykas falling in line. Here was the moment of no return. The safety net was gone and all he had was the trust that his plan would fall together –

The sound of metal hitting the ground caused him to glance back nervously and with a tremendous crack, his thoughts became nothing more than the fissure of pain running like lightning through his skull. A gargled cry of pain made it out of his throat, and he stumbled heavily backwards. ”Don’t…no…”

He didn’t see men in the crowd around them pull the more delicate women’s faces away. He didn’t see the young, brash Akalaks’ faces wrinkle in wrinkle in satisfaction at the bloody justice. Gilaman only felt the hot stream of his own blood pouring down his face and neck, hands fumbling for a dagger that was not at his side. ”You-“

He was one step too close to the ring of the crowd and a tall, muscled Akalak with a scarred face kicked out with a single booted foot, landing square in the back of the traitorous man and sending him tumbling sideways to land at Vanator’s feet. The pale white face looked up with a groan, helpless, delirious, and praying as a child would, wordlessly, for mercy. The crowd held its breath for the final strike.

Vanator slid up to Giliman, opposite Riaris, or Racoomas, the Drykas was not familiar enough to really know the darker brother, he only assumed that the Akalak had one. But it was clear to the Denusk man that his Riverian companion had no intention of providing the traitor with the process of law. This made no difference to Vanator. Yes, he was a victim as well, but Giliman's crime was really against the city of Riverfall.

Van saw the belt cast aside, the bulky arm of Riaris raising up to strike. The crowd was clamoring for expedient and swift judgement, closing in. A leg kicked out and Giliman stumbled, rolling to a stop at Vanator's feet. The Drykas looked down at the pleading man. For a moment, there may have been pity for the wretch, seeing Giliman's pathetic realization, too late, that he had wrought his own demise. Vanator only stared back with a dead pan face. Even if he wanted to, Vanator himself could not sway the crowd to offer the man due process. Not yet a citizen, the Drykas would leave the people of Riverfall to do as they saw fit. With a glance to Riaris, Vanator simply turned away, passing through the crowd, leaving Giliman to suffer the fate he deserved.

Spring Tournament Finale

It may have appeared if as the Akalak's eyes had rolled into the back of his head. The very pale blues were hard to spot at times, but they were there, scanning the crowds, the man on the ground and the Drykas in front of him. His blood was pumping, and the call of Krysus was bidding him to do more damage than he already had. And why shouldn't he, for once in a long while the violence would be in the right, justice serviced and all of that.

But there was a different look in the eyes of the Drykas warrior. He seemed indifferent, distant even, as if this didn't matter to him. The crowd themselves called for punishment, and Recoomas was disappointed when the man simply walked away. The mercy of the Drykas allowed Giliman to slowly stumble back to his feet, and Recoomas glared back and forth between the two. Eyes fell upon the wounded Giliman, then back on Vanator who was walking away. Suddenly Recoomas struck, charging Giliman, he snapped his arms, one around the man's neck, and the other around his shoulder.

Recoomas spun them around, leg jerking out as he tripped Giliman and slammed him face first into the ground. There on the ground with his arm still locked around the man's neck, the dark Akalak squeezed tightly choking the man's neck. The crowd raged on, some even cheering him as he strangled the life from the human. But suddenly, he stopped, just before he could have snapped the man's neck.

Rolling him over, the dark Akalak checked to see if the man was still breathing before he stood up again. Giliman was sleeping it seemed and Recoomas took a step back and picked up the belt and rested it across his shoulder again. Looking to the crowd, he spoke aloud so that they all would hear him. "Death would be too easy for this scum. He will live with what he has done. He will live a broken man."

Oh, how I enjoyed reading Vanator's posts! I felt like he was the more passive of the two PC's, at least in the hostage situation, but he still was incredibly useful. When he denied the final blow to Giliman... Woo! Talk about some great drama! I was holding my breath! Really loved reading this.
