The girl and the Sand Horse

Postby Lys on August 3rd, 2013, 2:05 am

Lys watched Rue's reaction and with the words spoken she jumped into action. Tempo was watching her girl now and as Lys reached up her hand, holding out her palm toward the pale colored mare, she closed the distance quietly. Lys heaved her covered bulge up onto the mare's back. She didn't like making Tempo carry both her and her equipment, usually preferring to walk beside the mare, but now she knew, with danger lurking and unknown, that if she even had a chance at keeping up with Rue she would need to be mounted. She stayed close, ready to mount quickly if she needed.

"What is it?" she asked, her voice so small she wondered if it even made it past her horse's ears. What was out here that had this girl so scared? Whatever it was, Lys didn't want to meet it. She slide her knife from its spot on her side. It was a worn knife, its edge jagged and rusty, but it could still do damage if she needed it.

She watched Rue carefully, then turned her eyes to the place where the sounds had come from. She didn't like the speed in which they were approaching. And any second now she had a feeling Tempo would take off. Please don't move, she thought, touching her free hand, the one without a blade, to the tough hide.

But over the hill came another horse and rider pair, not some dangerous creature as Lys had been drawing up in her mind. Still, while she slide her knife behind her a bit, she didn't put it away. Just because Rue was friendly didn't mean everyone here with a horse was friendly. He greeted Rue, in a sort of way, mentioning their race. He seemed to know her and Lys slid her gaze toward the girl in front of her.

The man spoke again, echoing Rue's nervous words earlier, though with much less words. He spoke only enough to get his point across it seemed. But Lys wasn't about to object; the one thing everyone seemed to have in common right here was that this was an unsafe place. "I'm Lys," she said quietly, quickly, reaching up to push her belongings farther along Tempo's back to make room for herself. "I'm accompanying you to Endrykas, if you don't mind, I'm ready to leave now."

Rue
Rue sighed in relief, relaxing her bow and putting the arrow away. She signed a greeting, although with the current threat abated, her signing spoke of relief. She mounted her horse, and then smiled, she remembered the man who had happened upon them, and she couldn't help the next words she spoke.

"We have got to stop meeting this way." Her words were spoken as a release of tension, her hands speaking of the joking tone of her words. Her demeanor changed quickly though, switching to one of readiness and haste. She turned to the girl behind her, still on foot. "What would you have done if he had been a predator? You'd be running on foot instead of riding away." Her hands moved quickly through signs for blind luck, mount, and speed.

She had questions for their savior, more than just one or two, but they would wait until they were safely back within the city, or at least until they were moving in that direction. She did have one last thing to add before they departed, her mouth was silent leaving the sincerity of pavi sign to relay her words. Thank you for coming.

"Let's go." She moved before the others had a chance to speak, making a circle around Lys before spurring Wildfire in the direction of the city.

It was the unfamiliar girl that spoke first, causing Shahar’s gaze to snap to hers. He quickly scanned her exposed skin, searching for the telltale tattoos that would mark her as one of the Drykas. But her skin was clear… and yet she turned to a Strider? Was she like he had been not so long ago, then—a Drykas removed from native culture?

His musings were interrupted by the one he did know, and he dropped the thoughts without much concern—she was tended to by a Strider, and so she was Drykas to him, windmarks or no windmarks. The copper-haired girl offered him an amused smirk with her words, but he did not smile at her jest—though he did not frown, either. Instead, the hunter dipped his head and almost finger-whispered another set of signs; if in need, always help.

She then turned to the other girl—Lys—and began prodding at the potentials, the what ifs that Shahar was not interested in. He waited patiently as the two of them readied themselves, and when Copper-Hair had finished he couldn’t help a gruff relief... you're welcome. Let us ride, then. It was time to move.

The girl and the Sand Horse

Lys turned her head to watch the other girl as she spoke, first to the other rider, who replied simply, and then turned to her. She frowned at the girl's questions. "You were on foot," she said, as means of explaining. "I would not have just ran and left you." Her mild confusion was not hidden in her voice. She could make out the sign for mount and speed, but the other sign was lost on the girl. She would need to learn more of this language, and she was eager to. After a moment she let the thoughts pass and hopped up onto her own mount. By then Rue was signing something Lys did know; thank you. and then at the quick words of relief from the other rider, they were off.

Lys let her heels touch her strider's side and it didn't take more for the horse to be trotting along beside the others. Once moving, Tempo began to relax, and with her Lys grew less anxious. Still, she made a nervous glance upwards every few moments, and she didn't return her small knife to its spot on her belt, instead letting it linger in her hand by her thigh. After a long moment Lys could feel the burning of silence and spoke softly, quietly, as if a loud voice may wake whatever beast they were hiding from. "This Endrykas, is it far?"

Rue
Shahar did not speak, but the meaning of his signs warmed her and gave her a chill at the same time. It was not usual for someone to offer Rue such sincere words, and she was still not sure how she felt about it. She did know one thing though, she did not want to change his feelings by letting him down. She kept to a medium trot, it would cover ground quickly enough while allowing Rue to use her bow if she needed.

When Lys spoke, it startled Rue, the silence breaking and distracting her from their surroundings. "Not too far," Rue spoke, falling in beside the other girl as she spoke, "but in these times, it is safest to keep the city in sight."

She glanced at Shahar who still looked just as anxious as she felt and she spoke in hopes of easing that tension. "We should move faster, can you canter?" It may have seemed an odd question to ask considering the Drykas blood surrounding her, but all things considered, they would be faster if no one fell off their horses.

The sky darkened a moment, a shadow falling across the grass and Wildfire stopped at the sudden tightness in Rue's body, snorting anxiously but holding still all the same. Rue's body twisted as she raised her eyes and her bow to the sky, arrow drawn before she had even found the source of the shadow. The bird dropped towards the grass, after some prey she could not see, and Rue nudged Wildfire into motion again, not bothering this time to put her arrow away.

The girl and the Sand Horse

The hazel-eyed girl urged her horse to join the two Drykas, and Shahar unconsciously urged Akaidras farther out so that she was between him and Copper-Hair. He then turned his attention outwards—to the sky, to the grass, to wherever unexpected danger might come from.

Hazel-Eyes spoke suddenly, capturing Shahar’s attention, but the words were not for him and so he disregarded them. Copper-Hair’s reply was likewise uninteresting, but when she turned to look at him his ears sharpened to pick up what she said next.

Still, it was an odd question, and he turned to look at her squarely. Was she asking him if he could canter? Of course, confused, he gestured. Some Drykas he would be if he did not know how to canter. It didn’t occur to him to ask Hazel-Eyes; she was on a Strider, and that made her Drykas—and that, in turn, caused him to automatically assume that she knew how to ride.

It took a few nudges to break Akaidras from his shameless eyeing of the sandy mare, but after a number of moments he huffed and surged into a powerful lope.

It was at that moment that a shadow plummeted from the sky, causing the black bay to shy and Shahar to rip a javelin from his back. Wait… no, it was a hawk, tangling with a bucking jackrabbit. The hunter took a breath and slowly returned the throwing spear to its resting place. Nothing to be concerned about.

For now.

Rue
With the three of them stepped into the round rocking pace of a canter they made quick work of the distance between their starting place and their destination. As the tent city came ever closer Rue finally relaxed enough to put her arrow away, holding the bow carefully across her lap.

Relaxed further, Wildfire's stride widened, falling into a smoother motion with longer stretches between the beats of three that made up the canter step. Rue had to bounce on his back twice before she caught his motion so that she could sit softly once again.

All too soon however, the city closed around them. "Slow." Rue spoke to her mount, and abidingly he stepped down into a trot, and at a second word a walk. She leaned up to pat his neck, turning to smile at the two others who accompanied her.

Welcome Home. Her hands signed to Shahar as she spoke to the girl who may not have understood the signs, "Welcome to Endrykas."

OOCI thought I'd post once more and offer you the same opportunity, other wise I'm sort of thinking Lys might not be coming back. I sent her a PM, and I'll let you know if I hear anything, but I wanted to have something closer to an ending before then.

The grasslands passed by quickly as the three Drykas did their best to hasten their passage. Akaidras, sensing his rider’s intentions, did his best to keep Hazel-Eyes and her horse between Copper-Hair and himself; she was a Drykas, without a doubt, but she looked at her surroundings with the innocence of a child who has never before left the confines of their pavilion. She did not know the ways of the grass.

Tent poles and flags pierced the horizon, causing Shahar to let out a breath of relief that he hadn’t realized he’d been holding. All three pulled their mounts from the canter, moving to a trot as they neared the outskirts of Endrykas. He turned to his companions, giving a quick we are here to Hazel-Eyes. Another sign caught his eye, this one from Copper-Hair, and he blinked at her curiously. Welcome home. He tilted his head, not quite sure if the sign was meant for him, and, if it was, what Copper-Hair meant by it. In the end, he chose to disregard the thoughts; if she meant something more then she would have to tell it to him. For now, though, he responded as any Drykas should.

Thank you. Welcome home.

A nice, straightforward little thread. Shahar, I didn't award you any Tracking XP for this because you're already competent, and a Drykas following clear horse sign.

Please let me know if you have any concerns regarding your grade. Shahar, please edit your request to show this thread has been graded.
