Note to the ReaderI have in fact practiced this, thus know it to be a very difficult trick to do even hurt a shoulder the first few times. Just FYI for those who don't think this possible. ;) Enjoy reading!

Ricky sweated and the warmth of the morning hadn't even kicked.in yet, as the days passed on they became only hotter and hotter in the city. He had started to get sunburns on face and the back of the neck recently, due to not being in the most shady places of the city while on patrol. "Petch, this shyke is.hard." Earlier Burt had tasked him with learning how to make do with side rolls now, simple dodge maneuvers that worked like a side jump as well as a roll. These were part of a trick his father had planned, and after the exertion of yesterdays rolls and jumps Ricky felt the strain hit him hard today. He had a grasp of them however, as he could do a couple side rolls without being disoriented, now if only his muscles would quit aching so he could focus more on the training.

"You've done well this morning son, yer prowess is quite astounding really, only because of yer innate desire to become better." Burt stood in the center of the circle, both wooden sword and Ricky's Wave Guard shield equipped. The lesson had only just begun though, as Ricky only had his wooden sword to use in this, and the lesson involved getting through that defense his father had from behind. "Of course ya remember the training we did with the shield the other day, more importantly the lesson I gave on bashin' yer opponents."

"Bashin' yer enemy provides a chance to create an openin' in their defense." He repeated with a smirk as he remained crouched into his offensive stance, wooden blade rested on his right shoulder as he gripped it tightly in his right hand.

"That's my boy. But not all enemies have a defence ya can get through so easily, but there's ways to find different openin's such as behind them." Burt finished the lecture with a nod and raised his shield, a given go for Ricky to try and attempt the trick his father mentioned. Ricky braced himself and took only two steps to his left, then on the third he went into a jump. He kicked as hard as he could to propel himself further along the side, which provided a slight opportune moment to penetrate Burt's defense, but Ricky wasn't in the need for slight. The odds were far better, as was his goal to begin with, if he came from behind; which was exactly what this next move would do. As Ricky landed on his feet he hurled himself in a forward yet sideways direction to the left go into a roll, thus he came to his feet with wooden sword ready for a swing as he found his balance. Ricky brought his sword up from his right as Burt spun around with the shield ready, he was reflexive enough to keep up with Ricky as the guard hadn't much practice in this gambit. Yet it proved to be useful in a manner of sorts, there was that few chime interval for one to react. Had Ricky not felt so sore and slow due to his muscles being tired, he could've very well landed the hit. Burt pushed the shield up to direct Ricky's sword away, and jabbed his own to Ricky with a grunt as he did so.

Ricky rolled back away before the pole made contact with him, a bit of a stumble onto his feet as his head started to spin now. "Good. You use the roll to escape the chance that the enemy may counter, as I taught you yesterday that it would."

"Yeah," Ricky huffed rather exhausted, "Let's keep goin'." He quirked as he prepared to go into another side jump, Burt agreed with a hearty chuckle and raised the shield once more. Ricky who was determined to accomplish the goal of this lesson, focused on making this turn count. With a step to the right, he put all his weight on his left leg, propelled himself into a leftward jump that gave him some momentum. He used this momentum to go into the roll as he lurched himself forward onto his left shoulder first, and side rolled over behind Burt with the world in a daze. He almost struggled to his feet this time but managed to pull into a swing as he did so, thus he brought the sword down while Burt spun around to attempt his block against the pole of the sword. His attempt was only a tick late however, as the shoulder to his shield arm felt the force of a stick collide into his flesh. Burt grunted with a stagger back after he took the blow, an awed yet proud look on his face as he looked to his son. "There you go son! Already gettin' the hang o' it." Ricky had taken a seat on the sand, ready for another break before any more practice had been done.

"Just barely." He remarked with exhausted sighs, he wanted to home now and consider today finished. "T'day's gonna be a long, long day." He exhaled tired as Burt came near him and took a seat next to him. The two would rest for a while before practice started again, and Ricky would continue to do these back attacks until finally he felt competent with them.
