The westernmost tip of Kalea, Wind Reach is home to an amazing group of people and their giant eagle mounts. [Lore]

The huntress listened in sullen silence to the Endal's threats, at least that's how she saw them. "Crystal clear," she murmured in reply, not making eye contact with the Endal. She just wanted to go. The sooner this man finished talking, the sooner she could go. She just wanted to go to her room and collapse onto her bed. She was so tired after her day's hunting that she just couldn't put up with this shyke anymore. True it'd been her own doing but she just wanted it to be over.
He seemed to have listened attentively to her rant and even thanked her for her honesty. That took her by surprise. He was full of surprises it seemed. But yet he seemed to be under the impression that he hadn't imposed his will on her at all. As far as she was concerned he'd imposed it but perhaps she'd been wrong and had misread the signals. Azira couldn't say that the idea surprised her, she misread things a lot. She snorted at the mention of his Nari.
"I did give you the benefit of the doubt. While we were talking I didn't comment on how horrific your Nari sounded, now did I? No. I said your accent was interesting and I suggested that we wouldn't talk about anything too complicated because it'd be hard for you. I was being nice or at least trying to be. And I'm not a hypocrite. I never assumed anything in case you hadn't noticed," she replied. "Maybe I can concede that I was wrong thinking that you were telling me what to do and maybe you could come to the same conclusion where your Nari is concerned," she suggested.
The mention of Samen made her flinch. The man had brought up memories that she would have preferred to keep buried. It was true that it wasn't something that all Endals did but there were still a fair few of them. It was also true that such a trait wasn't exclusive to the highest class. She'd come across the sort to force women amongst her own caste as well as the Dek. There were probably such individuals among the Chiet as well but she didn't know for certain.
"I know that not every Endal is like that but there are far more of that sort than you might think. People can show one face to the world but show another in private. But believe me when I say that I know his sort and that all I would have done is shove my blade through his hand. And if that hadn't worked..." Then it wouldn't be the first time, she finished silently. She wasn't going to share that information with him though she was sure that haunted look was back in her eyes. The teen made herself focus before she slipped into things she didn't want to relive.
"I believe you when you say you aren't that sort but what are you going to do with me?" she asked bluntly.

Turrin listened to Azira as she dug herself deep into the ground on the part that she was giving him the benefit of the doubt with his language difficulties. She made pretty good points, and he decided to extend the peace offering to her. The part about assuming that he was just like the rest was a bunch of bird crap since she already stereotyped the whole Endal caste as lazy caste who spends way to much time on their eagles to notice the plights of the lower castes. Turrin didn't want to spend the whole night arguing with the young Avora, so he spent the whole time silently listening to till she was finished speaking. During the part with Samen, Turrin noticed the young woman has experience this type of abuse before from his caste and the explanation seemed to be backed up with the haunted look in her eyes. When Azira asked what he was going do to her, the half-Myrian took a deep breath and said softly in common, “You are a interesting woman, Azira with a fire in a woman that I haven't seen since I was living in Toloba. You don't have to worry. I am not going to punish you in any way that will extinguish your fire. It would be waste...”
Putting his hands behind his head, Turrin looked up at the ceiling for a few ticks as he decided her fate. When he was ready, Turrin looked into her golden eyes and continued in a level voice, “I am going to chalk the night up to both of being tired and frustrated from our jobs, our lack communication, and misunderstanding of each other. I apologize to you for interrupting your supper and misinterpreting the what you said about my language skills.” Turrin shook his head and said softly, “However, regardless, you showed me a great deal of disrespect when you threw the bowl of food at me and made a scene in front of everyone in kitchen, so here is my punishment, Azira.” Turrin paused for a moment and continued, “Next winter, you will assist me on a hunting trip in the Unforgiving. I know it might not sound like much of a punishment since you get to ride on a Wind Eagle, but I plan on working you hard, and the danger out there is much more than the valleys around Mount Skyinarta, so if you aren't trained in the talon sword or unarmed combat, I can show you the basics before or on the trip. Yes, I am being lenient because the punishment must fit the crime. Your crime was just disrespect for my caste, so I will show you what it is like for a Endal like me in the field.” Turrin looked at her and asked with no emotions on his face, “Do you have any questions, Azira?”

The Endal listened to her talk in silence until she'd finished. When she'd finished speaking, Azira was wary when he began to speak in return. He seemed to think she was fiery (well she was Inartan, wasn't she?) and that he hadn't come across other women as fiery as her. That surprised her.
When he seemed to be letting her off, the huntress breathed a sigh of relief but it was short-lived. He was going to punish her. Great. Hopefully it wouldn't be something very unpleasant but yet she could see it being something demeaning. Turrin couldn't let her off lightly that was for certain but his "punishment" surprised her.
"You want me to hunt with you?" she gasped, staring at him in disbelief. Surely he hadn't just said that. "Why...why would you offer that?" It seemed to good to be true but his face seemed completely serious; he wasn't messing with her. The opportunity to hunt like an Endal, with an Endal, would almost be as good as being one. Maybe she could spend more time in the Aeries and might find a bird that didn't hate her and become an Endal and...
She was getting ahead of herself.
Perhaps she should thank the man but she couldn't bring herself to do it. Instead, she said, "I won't crumble under a bit of work I assure you. I'm not delicate."

Turrin watched the Azira face as it must have displayed five emotions at once defeat, confusion, excitement, happiness, stubbornness. The Endal enjoyed keeping the young Avora on her toes. It will do her good when they head into the deep Unforgiving together. Part of him wondered if working with her will be a mistake, but the excitement and determination on her face told him that it wasn't a mistake. When Azira asked why would he offer it to her, Turrin said simply, “It suppose to be a punishment, but... I have been looking for a second rider for sometime, and you interested me in a possible future candidate for one, and if it doesn't work out with me than I could refer you to another Endal. It was part of my reason for asking you to shot with me at the Second Quiver. I wanted to see your skills with a bow in action.” Regardless of his personal feelings towards her, Turrin wasn't going to squander an opportunity to maximize the young woman's potential. He was told by his father, a fang leader for the Twisted Vine clan, that part of being a leader was finding the best possible combination of people for a job. Azira had the potential of being a great hunter.
Turrin couldn't help himself from smiling when she told him that she wouldn't crumble over a little work. The half-Myrian said plainly, “Good...the deeper Unforgiving is a dangerous place, and I will need you to watch my back when we are traveling through the snow. Ultimately, we will have to learn to trust each other and work as a team. As you well know, game is scares around Mount Skyinarta, so we might have to go into territory that could be contested with Zith or infested with djed infused creatures to locate the our game.” Turrin ran a hand through his burgundy hair and said softly, “I will talk to Aponivi, and I will ask what he ultimately thinks of you riding with us. If the wind eagle doesn't like you or says no than I guess you are out of luck, but I doubt my friend will have any objections if I approve of you coming in the first place.” Remembering the haunted look on her face when he brought up Samen and said softly, “I do want to work with you in defending yourself with a weapon and unarmed. It will do you good on our hunting trip.” He wanted to say in the city too, but he decided that he didn't want to embarrass her and start the whole ordeal over again. The Endal looked at her a moment and asked with a yawn, “Do you have anymore questions, Azira? If not, I would like to get some sleep, and I am sure you would too.” |

While the idea of Eagle riding was appealing, the huntress knew that the creatures weren't at all fond of her. The most ill tempered of them had attempted to kill her for coming near them but even the quieter birds got cranky around her, even bonded Wind Eagles. She'd have to hope that Turrin's eagle wouldn't try to murder her. If the Eagle rejected her then she'd take it as an omen of some sort.
"Some punishment," she snorted, shaking her head. "Mind you of your eagle likes me as much as the others do then it'll definitely be a punishment." Azira considered his words about her archery skills and had to push away memory of the encounter in the range from a few days before where she'd had her skills insulted. That probably wasn't a good thing to mention, though it did remind her that she really needed to do something about curtailing her temper as if today's incident was enough of a reminder.
"If you think you can trust your bird not to kill me then I'll go along with you, not that I have a lot of choice anyway. And the sword and combat lessons would be helpful though I'll have to get ahold of a Talon Sword..." she replied, a yawn cutting off anything else she might want to say. "Have to say that I agree with you about the sleep, that's for sure."

Crossing his arms, Turrin smirked at the young woman when she asked if Aponivi would try to kill her. For the six years that he known his feathery friend. He never saw the wind eagle once tried to kill anyone. He surely has threatened death on other Inarta in the passed, but he the Wind Eagle was to noble to kill a Inartan without reason. However, he could tell from the worried look in the young woman's eyes that she was serious about Wind Eagles wanting to murder her. The Endal doubt the wind eagle would hurt her, but if she provoked the legendary beast, he wouldn't stop the beast if she was stupid enough to piss him off to the point of murder.
Contacting Aponivi, Turrin asked with a hint of amusement in his mind, ~Your not going to murder, Azira. Are you? I don't want to have to explain to the Valintar. Why you decided to maul a Avora to death in my home...”
Aponivi respond with a hint of annoyance in his message, ~You know that I don't kill without a reason, but if she annoys me to much, I will not hesitant to make a example of her...”
“She might not.. be to bad...”
“We will see, Turrin.”
Turrin smiled when she accepted his offer to teach her swordsmanship. The half-Myrian knew the pretty young woman would have a far better chance of defending herself from creatures of the Unforgiving and the dangers of the city if she knew the ways of the sword. When she said that she needed to buy a talon sword, Turrin said softly, “We will start off with wooden swords, so you don't injure yourself or me, but if you want to buy yourself a metal blade, it might be a good idea, so you can get used to the weight and the balance of the weapon.” When he was finished talking talking about sword training, he decided to talk to her about Aponivi, “I doubt my friend, Aponivi. Would kill you on the spot, but you have to realize that he thinks of himself as a noble and patient wind eagle, so if you are polite to him, I doubt that you will have any problems with him wanting to murder you.” Feeling another yawn coming, Turrin said with a nod, “Good night, Azira. I hope next time that we can meet. We can start over on better terms.” When he was finished talking, he turned around and walked back to his Aeries. |

The Avora frowned as she listened to Turrin. If they were going to start off with wooden swords then perhaps it was a good idea to put off buying a real talon sword for now. Her pocket was sure to take a heavy hit but she wasn't certain, not having any idea how much the weapon would cost. She'd never considered the blade before, never having any need for one but if he thought it was a good idea then perhaps she should follow his advice. There was no point passing up the training anyway.
When he told her that his eagle, Aponivi, wouldn't kill her she smiled humourlessly. She wouldn't necessarily have to provoke the eagle, most of them just took an instant dislike to her. The huntress had no idea why Wind Eagles disliked her so much but she'd never really spent much time trying to figure it out; it was a dangerous business going near them after all.
And at last she was free to escape. She raised a hand in farewell and then hurried to her rooms, her head filled with the events of the evening. How had a quiet dinner turned into...that? How had she managed to offend an Endal, become an focus of lust, cause a fight and yet still come out the other side alive and unravished? Azira had absolutely no idea whether it was luck or some intervention on the part of whatever gods were watching but maybe it was a bit of both. Right now it didn't bear thinking about; she was too tired after all the excitement.
The teen reached her rooms and managed to get her boots off before flopping onto her bed, fast asleep mere seconds after her head hit the pillow.

Turrin: Only Avora and Endal do the hunting. Chiet will not unless their position requires them to, and then, only in small amounts that does not go to the people (such as in the nesting aeries or aviaries).
Wonderful read, guys; I gave you each points in diplomacy for sorting your differences peacefully in the end.
