A surreal cavern city inhabited by Symenestra where stones glow and streets are reams of silk. Cocoon like structures hang between stalactites and cascade over limestone flows in organic and eerie arabesques. Without a Symenestra willing to escort you, entrance is impossible.

Sosicly wandered through the back rooms of the Weft and Warp with single-minded determination. She knew what she wanted; it was just a matter of finding it. It was not there was a lack of color but more that a influx of supply for the masquerade and too many colors to choose from. But it was only after ten chimes of wandering from thread to thread, and making a mess she would not have as much fun cleaning as she did making, did she find the silk. Pulling the spools she would need into a basket, Sosicly fairly skipped back to her main room.
--
Meandering over to Avarys she tapped his shoulder, seeing as he was only checking others work at the moment. “Ah, if it isn’t Sosicly. What do you have here?”

He didn’t wait, plucking the basket out of her hand, then grinning he lead her to another room where the threads were measured before being dolled out on the looms.

“Making your own dress.” He winked, “It will cost you the same.”

Rolling her eyes she nodded, excitement warring with dread at the thought of doing all the work herself, plus any other demands of the citizens.

“How much?” He asked, pulling out the first color, a smooth bright gold. She held up two fingers, and waited for him finished measuring out her warp. They repeated the process for the bright yellow, and rich red with Sosicly holding up three and two fingers respectively.

Giving her thanks as Avarys moved off with another customer, Sosicly made for her loom, and got out the carefully knotted bundle of golden warp threads. Working slowly she kept the layered thread in an X over her hand. Habit got the measurements correct rather than any real math. And a few moments later Sosicly was using the hook to pull a piece of thread out of her hand gently through the reed then letting the loose string dangle to the floor and moving to the next piece of thread.

When Sosicly looked up she was surprised to find the room mostly unchanged, it had seemed to take forever whenever she was sleighing. Shaking her head at her own impatience she readied herself to return to her work, she turned the loom around and gently tugged on the warp threads to ensure they were properly attached and threaded through. Standing and stretching briefly, she made her way to the back of the loom. There she pulled out small groups of heddle from each row to help keep count. Since the silk would be (hopefully) entirely hidden beneath the feathers, it would be a simple cloth pattern, one through four, she though. Then pulling from back she took of the first piece of thread from the reed, and slipped it through the forth heddle. She mouthed a silent four, then repeated the process going to her left counting down to one.

Pushing the group aside gently, she began again, counting backwards from four until she finished her small grouping. Taking a moment she drank more of her juice, a bit disappointed to find it nearly gone, then pulled aside another group of heddles and set to work.

Dressmaker Part I

Sosicly barely looked up from the finished heeddles to find one of the students offering her a small bowl of bruka and some sweet smelling fruit juice. Nodding her thanks she accepted the food, surprised to find the other girl staring at her curiously. Sosicly returned the gaze, and the girl flushed a bit.

“Is it for you or someone else? It is a very pretty color.” The young woman pointed to herself, “Well…good luck then.”

Blinking a few times in confusion Sosicly knew the girl wanted something else, and gestured for her to go on with a slight narrowing of her eyes. The other girl flushed a bit darker. Sosicly calmly ate her food, eyeing the girl as she stuttered with mild amusement, and half pity.

“My sister—well I—we were wondering what you would be going as.”

Confused Sosicly just shook her head and held a finger to her lips to indicate the secret. The girl nodded sheepishly, and it was then Sosicly realized the girls likely wanted to match, she thought about spilling her idea but no doubt there would be others similarly dressed as it was. Not to mention she had no desire to make two other dresses of the same kind. “Ah…then, I will see you there?”

She gave the girl a nod, who shuffled off with an awkward smile, and Sosicly finished the last of her bruka then set aside the sweet juice for later. Shrugging, she shook the warp threads gently to make sure they were pulled through nice and firm, and that the heddles hadn’t managed to tangle themselves. Then she took each little knotted group of warp threads and began to tie them over the rod, trying to keep it as close to her ends as possible. It took a few tries, the previous knots at the end of the warp kept slipping, and she found herself wondering whether she had just done an over hand or underhand knot.

When she finished she breathed a sigh of relief, and returned to the front where the rest of her warp was still wrapped. Much like with the back she began to shake it out as she carefully undid the rest of the loosely knotted warp. When she finished she began to wind the warp slowly, going back and forth between winding and shaking out the threads.

She grumbled silently as she did so, nearly braining herself on the edge of the loom when she stumbled over her basket of the other colors. She could not wait to be finished with this part.

When she had perhaps six inches of warp left Sosicly situated herself in front of the loom, and picked up the rod in the front. This time her groups of warp were more carefully measured and pulled from the middle. Then spilt in two, she pulled both sections under and over the rod, then wraped them behand the taunt piece back to the front to make a neat knot. Pleased with the grouping she repeated the process, this time pulling the sectioned group from the right side and knotting it, the silk slipping through her fingers a few times and leaving her to fumble around the loom grasping at them. Sosicly would then repeat the process on the left side, placing one knot on each side

When she finished she began the slow process of checking the tension, loosening and tightening the knots as needed from the inside out. That finished she got her bobbin, some scrap thread, and the shuttle. Wrapping the scarp thread around the bobbin she loaded it into her shuttle and set it to the side. Next she moved the treadles, excitement urging her quicker now that was nearly finished.
Sosicly connected them in the same pattern as the heddles, and pressed on each to ensure it lifted her threads correctly before grabbing her shuttle. Now it was time to begin.

The weft thread had barely finished separating her warp threads enough for her to begin rewinding her bobbin with the real weft thread when a shadow fell behind her. Sosicly turned in surprise to Elyna watching her work quietly. She technically wasn’t working but she tensed for words of reprimand, hoping she hadn’t actually made a mistake. She breathed out an exaggerated breath of relief when the woman said nothing, and flinched as the woman called back softly.

“I’ll be back.”

She wasn’t sure whether it was teasing or a threat, and she wasn’t sure which would be more frustrating. Making a face Sosicly loaded her new bobbin into the shuttle. Making sure there was a bit extra and that there were no other distraction she pushed it through the small opening. She caught it out the other end with the weary relaxation of someone finally finished threading their loom. A moment later there was a sharp tug and she pulled the beater down creating her first tiny row.

Falling into rhythm she lost herself in the steady swish of the shuttle, and dull thud of the beater. While she counted off the treadles, keeping up the steady beat of one through four.

Ledger :
Although she made the dress herself I charged the materials as if they had come pre-done. I think I have the pricing right, let me know if I miscalculated. And she didn't actually do the embroidery yet she will do it in the next one :D
75GM—2 yards of gold silk fabric, 3 yards of yellow silk fabric, 1 yard of red
9GM—Embroidery
Total=84GM

I'm excited to see the final product of Sosicly's labor! Plus I learned something from this thread, weaving, I've honestly never thought about the skill but reading this thread prodded me to research the different components of a loom and how they were used. Thankyou! T'was very enjoyable. :D
