The 65th of Spring 514AV

The day had become night many times since he had located the residence of Dimitri, days that had mostly been put to good use, though some had been wasted on petty things. Bathing and all the shyke that had come with it, though it had been necessary and a welcome distraction, the bat felt now that he had been wasting time. Not that he would have done anything differently if he hadn’t gone out to bathe, even though he had to gather as much intel on the house as possible, one in the mental state of paranoia would not think seeing the same figure sneaking through the alley days on end is a coincidence.

That had been a drag, waiting around the swindler’s house, killing time until he left the place and headed for the Shooting Star Inn, to order lunch no doubt. It was quite strange that the man still frequented the Inn even in his delusional state… but it was very convenient for the bat, then being able to investigate all he liked, from checking the escape routes to determining what kind of lock secured the door, all kinds of useful information. To gather all of it, he’d had to go multiple times, Dimitri returned fast, and looked over his shoulder every so often until he exited the alley, which stretched out far, the swindler following it all the way. That also made the bat’s timeframe too small to absorb plenty of info at a time, having to return over and over again.

Brandon had eventually gathered enough though and the time to use it was upon him, the day had come to formulate a plan of action, and prepare for all kinds of situations, this was not something he would allow to result in failure. What kind of pathetic vengeance would it be if that were to be the outcome, what would that say about his determination, his resolve? No, failure was not an option, a word he banned from his mind, from his vocabulary for now. This was an operation that had to succeed, that was the only outcome he would accept.

First he needed a map to get full view of his information, to make sure he wouldn’t overlook anything, this was a crucial part, if he got this wrong, he might find himself in a mess when things went south…. Usually he didn’t make time to do things like this, breaking in without much of a plan, just a general idea of the ways out, and the location of the house. This case being a rarity, he had no choice but to do things differently, he couldn’t mention enough that failure was not acceptable. So, a map… but he didn’t have any paper, let alone a quill and ink. What he did have in his possession were charred pieces of wood from the hearth that were not yet cleaned up, that would do just fine too. One such piece was grabbed, and onyx orbs searched for a surface he could draw on.

A wall was elected to receive the honour, black lines marking the path of the charred stick, forming a square, the rough shape of the target’s house. Then came the position of the door and windows located on the first floor, marked by rectangles. During his investigation he had studied a part of the inside by glancing through the windows, so he knew more or less how the rooms were divided over the first floor, the rest was a mystery as of yet. The front door gave access to a small hallway, which the bat put on the map with a short horizontal line starting in the middle of the left side, and then a long one down, connecting the inside-wall with the façade. The room directly next to it was the living area, and what was left was a kitchen in back, with a backdoor and window. The stairs were in the hallway, drawn as a ladder. Next, the thief wrote the respective names of the rooms in the divided space and took a step back to admire his work.

From what he could see on the drawing, he had four ways of entering or exiting on the ground floor, two windows and two doors. Now, the question was how to enter, using his usual method or via another? Supposing that he could use the backdoor for once, Bran drew an arrow with a question mark pointing at it, but one near the front door as well. It wasn’t like he would stick to one scenario anyways, the best one would be chosen for the complementary situation, who knows, he might even use the window when necessary.

The upper floor was unknown territory, the bat had no idea how many rooms there were, what kind of rooms it were or what the size of the rooms was. The only thing he did know was that there were four upstairs windows he could use to escape through, in case of emergency. Though, that was only if there were no other options left, the window was not one of his most favored escape routes, for the sole reason that it hurt. And it was too flashy, too loud and too … alarming, everyone in the vicinity would come and take a look to see what had happened, Shinya and curious citizens alike.

How much he hated assuming he’d have to run, he had no choice but to take the possibility into account. He wasn’t the best of thieves, not the stealthiest, quickest or the most successful, he was but an ordinary criminal, stealing to survive as well as for kicks. However, he had some experience, knowledge gathered due to making mistakes, and learning from them. More than once the bat had proven himself to be a fast learner, if he was interested, and learning from experience was by far the best and preferred method for teaching. If there was one thing the Kelvic had learned through the seasons he’d spent thieving, it was that nothing ever went according to plan.

Always there was something he had not thought about, had not seen coming, hadn’t been able to predict, the one factor no schemer ever could control, the factor of coincidence. Not only did there always something happen that took him by surprise, whether it was an increase of Shinya on patrol or maybe even someone else sneaking about in the same house. The latter was not something he’d been able to digest yet, it still haunted him, the way that person had ruined it all, there had been no loot, no unnoticed presence of his and no victory, only a shard of glass in his leg. He’d had to tear his cape too, something he still found outrageous. The point being; no plan is ever perfect, even if you have multiple ones.

Conjuring up many plans was not what he would do today, however, he would try to take various situations into account and prepare for them, or rather, devise some countermeasures if anything should happen. That would probably be the best way of tackling this problem, since it was utterly impossible to think of more than four or five realistic scenarios that might occur when on the job. With this countermeasure-plan he only had to think of solutions, and not –or less- of the problems that needed it. And what’s more, he didn’t have to find a way out of specific situations, he’d just classify them into different categories and have a plan of reaction for each of those classes. That should be quite possible for him to do, the Kelvic guessed, it wasn’t like there were that many categories, two or three, maybe even four, but that was the maximum amount… Ah well, he’d see when he started categorizing.

Categorizing shouldn’t take too much time, there were only so much different types of situations, and the solutions were the only things he needed to remember, so actually, he’d only have to come up with all kinds of reactions to a situation, or not? No, no problem, no method of solving it, so he’d have to think of a couple scenarios to use it in and classify them. The reason why he was doing this, something he wouldn’t do normally, was to lessen the stress put on himself, and to make sure he wouldn’t freak out if anything should go wrong.

For one or other strange reason people liked having a plan, and for the same reason they felt safer having one, even if it was a bad one. Probably because it gave them something to hold on to, to trust in and to blame if anything went south. Or just because it gave them some peace of mind, the bat was no different, except for the fact that one plan did not suffice for him. Some called it cowardice, sometimes refusing to act without a plan B –even if it was just one put together hastily- but he called it cautiousness. There were times that caution and safety came before wealth or a successful closure of a job.

This job, no matter how important it was to him, was no different, he could not risk more than needed, his arrest or giving his life were too much to give with too less to gain. His revenge wouldn’t be complete in the least, how could he leave it behind him when it had been half-assed and he now had to spend his time in jail? If it got him killed, then how could he possibly think of his accomplishments as satisfying or complete? That was failure too, to beat this game he had to get in without being noticed by –preferably- anyone, but only fooling the swindler was good enough too, extract revenge by getting his money back, steal additional coin or valuables and, this was optional, trash his place, though that would be hard to do without alarming anyone… Well, getting out unnoticed wasn’t a requirement, only not being killed or arrested –thus escape successfully, were mandatory.

That left room for destroying his house, which was nice, this would be the most absolute Ultimate Revenge ever recorded in the history of Lhavit! Well, maybe not, but still, it would be grand, he would take care it was. Oh, it would be, no doubt about it! He had something in mind already, something flashy enough, Dimitri would receive a harsh lesson, one that thought that stealing from the greatest thief in the city, Brandon Of The Black Wings! Yet, the man had had no way of knowing Brandon Blackwing was said thief….. No matter! It was not allowed, whether one knew or not. But he was starting to digress, back to the task at hand his focus should go. Problems and solutions, that was what was needed to be done right now, otherwise he wouldn’t be able to carry out his vengeance. Focus, Bran, focus!

So, there were only three solutions thief had for emergency situations when on a job; hide and wait, flee, or fight. The final one was only a last resort, or when thinking it was the most effective. It was sometimes necessary to knock someone out, for example if you were sneaking about, but could not advance further due to someone, a guard or so, standing in the way, back turned at you, there was no other option than knocking him unconscious. That was not preferable though, others might take note of the person not being on his post if you had hid him or his body lying about, alarming them either way. Not very much of a solution at all actually. But it was one of the categories anyways, the last resort category, fighting. Only used when other options were not going to do any good, so it wasn’t actually a true category, more of a …. Well, final option.

Then there was fleeing, an art any thief practiced and was pretty good at, otherwise they were not much of a criminal really. A true criminal knew how to run and when to run, they used their judgment to determine the gravity of the situation, and if it was too bad for one’s health it was the option they’d take. However, on this job he would not be able to flee for real, if he was spotted inside the house he’d have to act before everyone near was in a state of alarm, eliminating the threat was one way to handle that, quickly sneaking away and hiding until they believed to be mistaken another one. But the latter was included in ‘hiding’. If he wasn’t spotted though, but could be any tick, he would retreat rather than flee, and maybe take a detour to get where he wanted to be. Avoid them instead of confronting them, that was option two.

Option three was hiding, the best one of them all, but also one that wasn’t without risk. After all, he would be in unknown territories, improvising was what would have to be done. His target though, knew all the nooks and crannies of his residence, and it was possible that he wouldn’t be able to hide for long, being forced to move somewhere else, to a place Dimitri had already checked and wouldn’t believe someone was hiding there. A bit problematic, but doable, it should be not that much of a pain in the butt. With his reaction-plan in mind, the thief felt more confident already, his grin spreading over his face. Let’s do this!

This was another terrific thread, Brandon. He is one step closer to claiming his vengeance on Dimitri and I cannot wait to see how that unfolds. I liked how you described his planning process and the addition of drawing out a map of sorts was a nice flourish. Keep up the awesome work!
