The Creation of an Insignia

Another commission had made its way into the ledger of the Emporium. Mikayas had left him a note the night prior, it seemed, and now, Venser was to create a relief of an insignia. A strange request, to be sure, given that usually sculptures were cast with a relief around it, or at the very least, these sort of sculptures were... but the client was always right. Mikayas was present this day, working on a sculpture to go with the insignia, though much larger, on the floor above. Two commissions of similar objects...

Perhaps one is meant for an atrium of sorts? Or in the house of one of the wealthier families? And the other for a bedroom or personal area? One never knows with these things. Mikayas keeps it in his head. But... he put the insignia on paper for me to reference. Perfect.

Venser worked better with a picture, as any person would, and decided that he would begin immediately. The specifications were on the paper, as well, Venser reading out the numbers aloud as he referenced a measuring ruler to dictate an estimate of how much wood he would have to use.

"Two feet and a half feet by two. A relatively small sculpture, definitely for a personal situation."

Venser moved from his desk, setting the ruler he had grabbed and placing it inside of his desk, the Rush twin making his way to a stack of cylindrical cuts of wood. He made his way to the set of cylinders what were three by three, the Rush twin allowing himself an extent of room to work with. Venser was confident in his ability to perform finishings, but the creation of new sculptures still got to him. He did his utmost, glad that Mikayas did not yet assign him to legitimate sculptures but instead reliefs, though in this particular situation he relished neither option.

Carvings regarding the Black Sun was nothing new to Venser, most of the commissions that came through the shop were either religious or tributary to the organizations that ruled the city of Ravok. But, it was getting old. Repetitive and tedious, but he was not one to complain. The job was one he had asked for, and one that had treated him well. Mikayas had even allowed Venser a flexibility for his work schedule in order for the Rush twin to take part in classes with the Institute for Higher Learning. It also helped that Valdar's work lessened Venser's load. The two were relative equals in terms of skill in the craft of carving, but Venser had experience that could not quite be substituted. A chuckle sounded from the Rush twin's lips before he decided to get to work.

The Rush twin left his desk for a moment to retrieve the saw that was placed upon a wall approximately eight feet from his location, returning to his desk with resolve set upon his expression as he sat himself down upon the stool stationed there. He did not require his feet at the moment and so, he reached into the wellspring of djed. A deep breath escaped the Rush twin's lips as his left hand clutched at the saw's handle. The breath cleared his thoughts, djed flowing from his soul and along the depths of the pathways that allowed the 'backbone' to move through the body. The manipulated djed attracted the inlaid djed within his right foot, then Venser began to direct it.

From his right leg and upwards along his torso, the djed flowed, a second breath entering and escaping his lungs in turn, the energy weaving thorugh pathways and after a number of ticks, the Flux had taken djed from his right leg and placed it within his left arm. The leg was almost asleep for the moment, the strength siphoned from it in favour of his arm. It was then that Venser Rush moved the limb, both enhanced strength and speed, born from his djed, allowing the Rush twin to saw through the wood with ease. Rather than experiencing the harsh resistance of wood, the strength allowed him to tear through the material, the teeth of the saw easily rending wood from wood, two inches removed from wood in a perfectly straight line before the Rush twin repeated the process for each side. A total of four inches cut from each side, and four two inch thick blocks of wood made as a result later, and the square was ready to be shaped.

But first...

A third purposely done, focused breath filled Venser's lungs as he tapped into the djed he had used to saw the wood, slowly, carefully willing it to return along the pathways that the djed had transferred in, Venser's will encouraging a slow, steady re-adjustment and re-connection with his right foot. After approximately fifteen ticks, the process was done, and Venser moved his foot, pain prickling through his senses, as if his foot had fallen asleep, but there was no harm done.

Perfect... I'm getting better at this. Next...

The Creation of an Insignia

With the wood properly cut into a square rather than the cylinder that it was originally, Venser's carving work could begin. The work of making a relief, while Venser had done it before, was a strange one. The patron could want it in one of two ways. A full, in depth relief, which was several inches to even a foot deep, or something just slightly more embossed into the material than an engraving. It was wider by default, but by all appearances, it seemed like this person wanted the shallower cut. It was perfect, because Venser's desire to go deeper into the material was hampered by his desire to simply be done with the assignment.

Patience was the virtue of the craftsman, a fact that Venser had learned firsthand, but patience could be guided with a stern desire to want something done immediately. Quality did not suffer if attention to detail was paid, and that was a talent that Venser held dear to him. He decided to allow the talent to probe even deeper, the Rush willing his djed to move about in a different way. He called upon his djed once again, willing for it to imprint into the annals of his mind, bringing light to his eyes that no other magic could do.

Auristics was called upon, and though the segment of wood's aura was faint, there was something to be had with connecting to it. Several inches of aura emanated from the wood, the Rush twin reaching out to it, his mind reaching out to it, synchronizing and locking the aura in his grasp as he looked into the wood. He had no desire to read its history to any extent, or gather impressions of taste, or sound. He sought to see the structure within. Looking deeper into the wood, the confines of surface level fading away, Venser saw what he was looking for.

He found no true flaws beneath the surface, though the grain seemed to have splintered at the surface level, something he had not noticed before. The core of the wood was tightly packed together, with a single notch in the wood, a small bubble of space near the surface that the Rush twin could just as easily buff out.

A fair idea... I think I should, actually. I could round out the edges while I'm at it.

Venser reached into his deck and pulled from it his sanding leather, his favoured tool in the craft of finishing, though today he would use it at the beginning of his build. Venser's fingers worked the leather along the surface, using the rough, sand-layered material to smooth out the splintered surface of the wood. Casting it over the edges, he rounded them out, careful application of a circular, kneading force set in order to adapt to the pattern of the grain. Within ten chimes, the process was approximately halfway to completion, Venser allowing himself a moment's rest in order to soothe the cramping sensation within his hand.

The moment came and went, Venser continuing along the motion, the surface of the wood soon becoming smooth, polished, Venser allowing three inches of surface material to be eaten away by the sanding leathers, a pile of sawdust surrounding the Rush twin's wooden prism. Venser lifted the structure from the table, using his free hand to clear the table of the collection of wooden dust, disdain marking his features, though he took care to cast it away from him rather than in his direction. Satisfied that the first step of his carving work was complete, the Rush twin cast his arm towards the collection of gougers set to his right side. There was a grand variety of the tools at his disposal, though Venser took the second-smallest of the gougers from the holster that held it inside. Approximately one-fourth of an inch in depth and width, this particular gouger was perfect for the Rush twin to use for this task.

The lines will be thick enough to make a good impression, but they won't become cluttered as I draw the entire shape. It just takes some thinking beforehand... This should come out well enough.

Venser held the gouger in his left hand, the tip of it pressed to the wood as he took a deep, calming breath.

He was ready to begin.

The gouging process was a slow, steady one. It involved the application of pressure with the tool, the tip of which was wedged and sharpened in order to penetrate the wood, the constant use of force necessary to push the wood and rend it from the rest. But, Venser allowed the work to progress, slow curving motions applied to the gougers in order to turn, a sharper hand necessary for ridges of the white sun that made up the Ebonstryfe's logo. Smooth, immediately followed by sharp turns were made, twin ridges carved in order to give the shape a sort of three dimensional appeal.

Though Venser's talent as a carver was by no means transcendent, he prided himself on the ability to be resourceful. Swerving curves were made by a purposely manufactured twitch of his hand, the motion maintained for several moments before a cramp began to work in the Rush's wrist. He had managed to complete the first layer of carving the sun, the first and easiest inch into the wooden cube that he had created. The second and third would be much more difficult.

Ven decided to take a break from the particular motion, instead reaching for the largest of his engraving picks, intent on beginning at least part of the inscription that was demanded as per the commission. Both reliefs would be adorned with two phrases, though the first was by far the most obvious.

Venser began the slow work of pressing the the pick into the wood, embossing the first two words beneath the unfinished visage of the Ebonstryfe's sun. Neat script formed words, the diamond-encrusted pick rending wood and producing sawdust in exchange. When the words were done, Venser blew on the engraved words, the sawdust scattering.

Hail Rhysol!

An incredibly dull and overused phrase, but Venser had embossed it so many times in so many different ways that he prided himself on the job. The blonde decided that he was going to, at the very least, progress further on the carving. Lifting the gouger, the Rush twin traced the first gouge he had made, mimicking the curves and swerves, coming to intimately know the insignia of the Ebonstryfe through the motion. Each pike produced its ridge, a complicated, though simple to perform shape that Venser enhanced with a three dimensional appeal. A wedge formed in the middle of each 'ray' of the white sun, Venser deciding to add his own personal touch.

Just once more and the second engraving, then I can take this to Mikayas.

The task was tedious. The rending of material from two inches set into a relief was different than the first or even second inch of depth. The entirety of the metallic wedge of the gouger was set into the hole, making it quite difficult to apply any sort of pressing force, but luckily, there was a solution. Venser switched from the current gouger to a different one, a hooked wedge allowing Venser to apply, rather then pushing force, a sort of pulling force along the material, rather like using a rake. Venser dragged the sharpened metal gouger along the surface of the wood, feeling for the third time the bite of the wood as it was parted from the whole, the Rush twin's hand cramping once again from the force, but he dare not use the Flux on something so delicate.

Not yet, anyway...

Someday, he would be able to, the rush twin already becoming more confident in his placement of djed, but it required more practical application. For the moment, Venser contented himself with the force his physical body could supply, and within a number of chimes, the process was finally done. The entirety of the white sun into which the black sword penetrated was complete, the Rush twin curious as to why he was not ordered to create the mark of a black sword, but he decided that he didn't care. The task in it of itself had taken two bells, at the very least, and it ached him.

One more thing...

Venser replaced the gouger before reaching for his own engraving pick, a smile gracing his features as a final, momentous arc approached. The completion of yet another task, the resourcefulness of Venser utilizing gougers as of yet unfamiliar to him and creating a relief of particular depth. All of it he was rather proud of despite the fact that he enjoyed absolutely none of it. An exasperated chuckle sounded from the younger Rush twin's lips before he began the process.

The diamond encrusted pick tore through the surface of the wood, an inch below the first engraving that he had made, the slow, steady scraping of the pick an almost soothing process, for this, engraving, was his true calling within the Emporium. A smile materialized upon his features as he embossed the words:

In Your name we Fight!

The words were, he supposed, slightly less overused. Venser blew upon the engraving, parting from it the residual sawdust before he put the engraving pick away. The Rush twin followed the work he had completed with a finishing, polish washing away the impurities of the wood, a glossy shine permeating across its surface after a matter of chimes. Venser allowed fifteen chimes to pass in silence as he allowed his mind to wander, the polish drying upon the surface of the wooden relief before he climbed the staircase leading to Mikayas' workspace.

"The work is done, Mikayas. Shall I leave it here?"

"Yes, yes, boy. Let me see it, first."

Mikayas looked over the work in detail, wrinkled fingers pressing atop the surface of the carved relief before he nodded in approval,

"Well done, Venser. You're doing well for yourself. You can go now, you seem like you have other things on your mind this day. Tomorrow, I need you earlier than usual. A new shipment of wood is arriving and I need a strong body like yourself to help with the wood."

Venser nodded in understanding, chuckling at the flattery before he bowed to Mikayas, a gesture of respect rather than necessity, before he left.
