----World's End Grotto

It was an insufferably hot day for being so close to the beginning of the season. Syna's rays beat down from the east onto the hot cobble of the Zeltivian streets. The entrance to the famed World's End Grotto offered a welcoming refuge form the heat of the summer sun. The promise of cool drinks, salty sea-food and a friendly environment was expected of the establishment. It was what it was known for. But today, the locals and travelers would be greeted by a different turn of events. It was with that expectation, to serve and provide comfort, that Serra unlocked the lounge that morning. Customer's would be filing in very soon, and the cook was waiting anxiously to begin her job as her boss opened the lounge for service. As Serra went to unlock the door, she found the knob to be already loose. Precaution took Miss Danalle into the suddenly eerie section of her establishment on careful feet. She did not know of anything worth stealing in the lounge of the Grotto. A few glass mugs, maybe some kelp beer, but nothing of significant worth to anyone but her. Nor had she ever experienced a break in before, would there be someone inside waiting for her? The manager did not know what lay in wait, no one would have expected what did.

No lamps had been lit yet and the shutters were still closed from the night before, so she would not see the haunting figure that lay in wait for her. Together the cook and the young proprietor opened the shutters. They could see a few locals already stepping up the stone to the door, ready for their midday meal. Guests who stayed at the inn came in from behind them, the event that followed was in no way private. As sunlight spread through the room, lighting all but the darkest of corners, a shriek of fear erupted from a travelling maiden as the few customers and employees looked upon the gruesome sight. She was not the only one to scream in horror as a child ran into the lounge. Having stayed at the inn with his parents, he ran ahead of them to be one of the first into the tavern that morning.

The scene itself would flip a stomach. Blood not only pooled off the edges of the table, but splatters and drag marks littered the area surrounding the table that it all took place on. It became obvious that the murder had taken place here, unbeknownst to those who slept on the other end of the building. The man was spread across one of the largest tables in the room, meant for larger parties of people. He was spread diagonally, in an 'X' shape so that he would take up most of the table, a vulnerable position that signifies his inability to defend himself. Cuts and bruises litter his body in no particular fashion. Although his pants are torn and seep through with blood, his shirt only holds secondary stains, as if it was removed and replaced. In any light, the mangles corpse would not seem to have had a painless death, in fact he would seem to have had the opposite. Locals would have recognized his easily, had his face not been mauled with the torture that preceded his demise. A well-known wizard known for his volunteering at the University and interest in furthering the cities food supplies, albeit he was still working on theories.

Upon closer inspection of the man's face, should one be able to handle the reek of death that surrounds him, they would find greater detail to his pain. A single eye looks to be gouged out of the pale face, the uneven cuts showing that this act had been struggled against. The other eye lay wide open, the brown of his iris having bled into the silvery-grey bulb, now sunken into its socket, the sign of death. Chunks of hair have gone missing from one blade or another and more than a few shallow cuts slice his cheeks and neck. But the most prominent horror is that in his mouth. Or what is missing from it. Tears are evident at the corners of the man's cracked lips, brown crust sealing the broken skin after its violent separation. But his mouth is only slightly open, almost impossible to see into without opening the jaw further yourself. Black blood pools in the opening, hiding the fact that will soon become very important to any investigation. He lacks a tongue.

News would spread very quickly, the Grotto closing its lounge for the rest of the day and likely the ones following. Consoling was offered to those who had witnessed the uncovering of the crime. A little after noon, curious individuals and investigators would show up. The University had known of it immediately, he had not been one of their professors, but the mage was well-known and well-liked. Those who offer help are given entrance to the gruesome scene and corpse, the horrified city wants to know what happened and who had done it.

[World's End Grotto] A Silencing Scene (Aoren)

Postby Aoren on June 19th, 2014, 11:39 pm

Aoren stood outside the World’s End Grotto. He had heard of this establishment shortly after coming to the city of Zeltiva. The other students at the University often made reference to it when they were finished with their studies. It was a favorite haunt for many citizens from what he’d gathered. As he recalled the reason he was at the Grotto that very moment he couldn’t help but manage a grim smile at the notion of “haunting” the inn.

Slowly he made his way past those gathered around the exterior of the establishment. When the news of the gruesome murder had reached his ears, Aoren had been among the first people to volunteer to help at the scene of the crime. While he was no investigator he was possessed of a few skills that had proven useful in uncovering things from the past. He’d made those skills evident to the authorities of the University and they’d immediately sent him to the scene.

At his side was his ever faithful companion, the large Bozderon, Zypherian mixed breed dog. Isikai was a little uneasy as he tentatively followed Aoren into the interior of the World’s End Grotto. The Drykas man gently pat the dog on the head.

It’ll be okay, boy.” Would it? From what he’d heard the scene was grizzly to behold. He wouldn’t know the full impact of what lay there until he saw it for himself. Throughout his life Aoren had seen a number of injuries but nothing as brutal as what had been described to him. Quietly he made his way through the establishment until he reached the lounge. There were a few people lingering near the doorway. Officials no doubt or people in need of being consoled after witnessing what they’d stumbled upon. No one seemed to bar Aoren’s entry so he made his way into the room.

The first thing that struck Aoren was the weight of Death that he felt. The iron tang of stale blood lingered in the air along with the festering smell of a decomposing corpse. The floor immediately around the scene of the crime and somewhat away from it was smeared with blood. Some of it was still congealing, some of it was still wet, but most of it was dried. Aoren felt the back of his throat tighten as he steeled himself against what he was about to see. Moving closer to the table he drew in a sharp intake of breath.

By the Goddesses…” He called upon the comfort of his faith in both Rak’keli and Avalis as he stared at the mutilated man in front of him. He felt compelled to mend what he saw but it would have been a futile effort. It baffled Aoren that someone could unleash upon another human being such remorseless brutality. At his side, Isikai whined drawing closer to Aoren. No doubt the dog was picking up the emotions that were lingering in the room. Aoren rest a hand on Isikai’s back both to steady himself and to comfort the dog.

Who could do such a monstrous thing?” Who indeed? That was part of the reason why Aoren was there. Upon approaching the authorities of the University he had volunteered on the grounds that he would assist in the investigation. He had informed them of his ties to the Goddess of Seers, Avalis. Perhaps his gift with the Sight might prove useful in some way. He would have stepped closer to the corpse but he didn’t want to impede upon what one of the Wave Guards might be working on. With that thought he looked around searching for a figure of authority to whom he might either report to or work with.

oocSorry its short and late! xD More will come soon, I promise :)

"Well, I don't s'pose yer the killer?" A scruff voice spoke up behind Aoren. The man's voice was low, but it seemed too loud as it floated through the thick air that surrounded the horrifying scene. His beard showed a hint of scruff, and although his uniform was not as well known as the Waveguard, he wore the badge signaling he was with the University. He was simply a guard who was called down after the University found a need to stick its hands in the mess. The man glanced uncomfortably at the dog before positioning himself to stand on the other side of Aoren."The name's Caipo. And yer's is ... ?" Caipo didn't offer a hand, but kept his eyes trained on Aoren's. The man would look anywhere but at the mangled body that was spread across the table. After getting Aoren's name, Caipo was quick to cut him off of any further words should he have any. "Look here, kid. I don't wanna drag this on all that long, ya got me? I'm assumin' someone sent ya over here. You got somethin' we need to solve this. We've'n't dealt with anythin' like this in a long time." Caipo's brown eyes dragged themselves to the pool of blood and back at Aoren, it was becoming increasingly clear that this man was lost. Looking at the body and combing over the scene could only do so much in the process of catching the criminal. He would not say it, but this volunteer's help was a necessity if they hoped to take any steps forward in the investigation.

"We 'aven't done much. He's rather bloody and no one wants to touch 'im. Without goin' inta too much detail, it looks as if he was tortured before they ganked 'im. Wouldn't know why someone'd want to do it though. Nicest Wizard I know." Caipo let his arm swing towards the scene an open gesture to give Aoren access to the scene. "Why don't ya take a look yerself? See whatchya can." Doubt laced Caipo's voice, and he took a step back, the hard grimace never leaving his face.

[World's End Grotto] A Silencing Scene (Aoren)

Postby Aoren on June 29th, 2014, 11:09 pm

He doesn’t bite.” Aoren gave the older gentleman from the University a polite nod of his head. Caipo was his name. It was different to say the least. Aoren was of course referring to the discomfort he noted in the elder gentleman’s disposition as he laid eyes upon Isikai. The large black mixed breed was no doubt an intimidating dog to behold for some but like Aoren, he possessed a gentle nature unless provoked. In the whole time that Isikai had been the Drykas man’s companion Aoren had only seen him become seriously agitated once and it hadn’t been unwarranted.

You may call me, Aoren.” He would have shaken the man’s hand except he didn’t offer one. Instead Aoren listened carefully to what the old guard had to say. The fact that the victim had been tortured was somewhat of an obvious thing to deduce given the corpse’s mutilated appearance. When the elder gentleman had said his peace Aoren simply gave him a nod. With that he turned stepping up next to the deceased man taking in the gruesome sight. Carefully he rest his quarterstaff against an edge of the table.

Gods grant you peace, poor soul.

It was a silent prayer that he spoke only to himself. Nonetheless he wished the man peace in the afterlife that the terrible end he suffered in his last moment was wiped away in the embrace of the gods. Aoren did not yet call upon the powers of Auristics to assist him in his examination. He would first take a look at things normally to see what things he might find on his own. The Drykas man had little to no experience in the matter of investigating things in the way of criminal activities but he was not an unintelligent person. With the right clues he could piece together a puzzle presented before him though it would take some time. The first thing that Aoren noticed was the sheer brutality in the way that this man was murdered.

This man’s death was absolutely brutal. I’ve seen Yukmen who were treated with more kindness in their deaths than this.” He spoke as he gently pried open the victim's mouth to witness the missing tongue. He peered inside the blackened mouth holding his breath to ward off the smell. He knew that if he'd taken a direct whiff of it he very well might throw up. It was then that Aoren called upon the powers of his djed. He brought that power to the forefront of his vision casting it down to the corpse in front of him. The aura before him was in no way dim. Though the life of the wizard had long since left the body as far as Aoren could tell the impression’s left behind were blazing with life. So much so that Aoren was forced to furrow his brow as he focused on the aura.

Anger.” Aoren passed a hand over the corpse mingling his own aura with the aura of the dead man. Everywhere he looked, everything he saw, there was an overwhelming feeling of rage that he had to concentrate in order to filter out. Aoren focused his energies working on synchronizing his own aura with the one in front of him so that he could better understand what he was perceiving. It was slow work that required the vast majority of his concentration.

There’s so much rage here but it didn’t belong to the victim as far as I can tell. It as if...” Aoren searched for the right words. Through the vision granted to him through Auristics he was able to perceive that this emotion had been saturated into the aura around the immediate area. He felt the tremors of fear ripple their way up his spine as well but that was to be expected. The anger wasn’t all that focused as far as Aoren could tell either. It was wild and chaotic. Whether that was a true representation of what happened or a byproduct of his unfamiliarity with how to handle the magic he was using, Aoren couldn’t tell.

It’s as if the anger wasn’t exactly centered on this man in particular. Just…fury everywhere as far as I can tell.” The strain of maintaining his vision to uncover other facts was quickly making itself evident as he focused his attention.

I’m going to see what else I might be able to find.” Aoren took a deep breath adopting a meditative stance. He laced his fingers together in front of him. He stood with his feet shoulder width apart then exhaled slowly as he concentrated doing his best to take a deeper look at the aura.

I am almost afraid of what I might find there…

As Aoren went to investigate the body, Caipo stepped back more. He turned to stand by the door, barring entry and giving the University student the room and quiet that he needed.

As Aoren's auristic eye cast over the body, he found that he could find concentrates of a dark emotion. An emotion that surpassed anger, it was far more animalistic than an average person was able to muster. The most prominent area where Aoren would see this lingering on the victim's aura would be where the corpse's tongue used to be. The murderer would have had to be far closer to the man than the slash of a blade to leave such an impression. Although simple auristics would not give away what had happened to the organ or where it had gone. Near his missing eye, the gashes across his chest and inside his loosely replaced boots, he would find more of the heavy aura.

Once he looked past the wounds and the anger, Aoren would be able to confirm that the victim was an active magic user, as Caipo had said. Although Aoren would not find what type of mage he was from the Aura. As obvious as it was that the victim was a mage, it raised the question. Why didn't he use it to fight back? The answer lay on his wrists where there was an extremely heavy Djed leak wrapped around the mage's wrists. Since Aoren does not know about magecrafted handcuffs, he wouldn't be able to come to the conclusion from an aura.

It wouldn't take Aoren very long to find that all that he would find on the man's aura was pain. He would be able to see more detail into the injuries, but would otherwise find himself at a dead end for finding any real leads. Although with divination he would find the causes for what he sees.

[World's End Grotto] A Silencing Scene (Aoren)

Postby Aoren on July 10th, 2014, 6:31 pm

The weight of the dark emotions Aoren was assaulted with were like a net that captured his attention. They drew him in deeper leaving black stains upon his vision drawing him in like claws that latched on to the slightest bit of warmth they could find. It took a concentrated effort on Aoren’s part to push beyond them in search of finer things. The wounds made questions arise in Aoren’s mind but he would address them soon enough. Without much prompting his attention was drawn to the profuse Djed leaks that emanated from this man’s wrists.

Magic.

Aoren recalled a lesson earlier in the season where his professor had taught him that Auristics was capable of viewing magic. Though he was certain that the cuffs wrapped around this man’s wrists were magical in nature he did not have the energy to devote to uncovering their properties without pushing himself to a dangerous edge. The djed work however was obvious.

But what does that mean? What do they do?

They were questions that would have to wait. The strain of using his auristics on such a concentrated level was beginning to make itself evident. With a blink of his eyes Aoren released his hold on the magic allowing it to receded from his immediate consciousness. He brought a hand up pinching the bridge of his nose. Isikai nudged his leg. Without looking Aoren rest his other hand atop the dog’s head running his fingers through the fur in an almost therapeutic gesture to help clear his head.

So much anger. What could bring a man to this much rage?

It was a valid question. Given the almost primal animalistic nature of the impressions left on the aura Aoren had to wonder if something else had been involved in this mutilated wizard’s death. Several other things presented themselves to Aoren’s assessment. Rather than keeping such things to himself he spoke aloud.

There’s very little go on in the way of this man’s aura. Anger, hate and rage are practically smothering all other impressions. There is the matter of those cuffs…” Aoren nodded toward the cuffs around the dead man’s wrists. They presented an interesting piece to the puzzle. He would have to delve into texts at the University to see if he could find answers or perhaps ask his professor if she had the time. “I don’t know what they’re for but there is a high amount of Djed concentrated on them. That at least tells me they’re magical.

He turned to regard Caipo for a moment.

I’m not getting much in the way of a reading beyond emotional with using my magic. I am going to use an alternative method. It’s going to require that I go into meditation. Could you make sure that no one disturbs me?” Should the elder guardsman oblige to Aoren’s request the Drykas man would give Caipo a slight bow. Grabbing a chair he brought it up to the side of the gruesome murder scene. Aoren surveyed the body with a sad gaze. The sight of such an unpleasant death made something within him ache.

No one deserves such a terrible end.

Shaking his head Aoren sat down upon the chair resting his feet flat upon the floor. He took in a deep breath squaring his shoulders. He adjusted his seating in the chair to be as comfortable as possible.

Isikai.” The black mixed breed dog padded up to where Aoren sat taking up a post beside him. Isikai was a fairly even tempered dog that had yet to lash out at any person. The canine did display several admirable qualities to balance out his more playful ones though. If anything he might serve as a deterrent for anyone seeking to bother Aoren while he meditated. The sight of an athletic, almost wolf-like black dog large enough to topple a grown man would keep some away.

Taking a deep breath Aoren stared straight ahead preparing himself to enter his meditative state. From there he would tap into the powers of Divination and seek the guidance of his Goddess. It would be through the gift she had long ago bestowed upon him that Aoren felt he would find his most concrete answers.

[World's End Grotto] A Silencing Scene (Aoren)

Postby Neologism on August 26th, 2014, 8:31 pm

oocSorry Ao! Because of the plot change, I'm going to cut you off right before you pull the chair up and start meditating. I'm sorry, but if you could hold off on that for one more post that would be great. :)

"Magic?" Caipo's attention was alerted at Aoren's words. The gruff man knew little in the art of Djed, but he knew enough. "On the cuffs?" The officer had been hovering in the door way, keeping an eye on Aoren as well as his team that kept the crowd at bay outside. It didn't take him long to return his full attention to the Drykas. His short stride took him towards the gruesome scene, as he looked at the cuffs. "I guess ya're pretty useful. Can't 'lieve I 'idn't catch 'em maself." The officer made a point to stand on the side of Aoren where his dog wasn't, as he leaned into the body that lay on the table. It took Caipo a minute, moving his head at different angles around the cuffs on the man's right hand. It seemed that the cuffs had been cut with something, letting the body lay out in the way it was set. With respectful fragility, the Officer used three fingers to turn the man's wrist. The stiff arm made it hard for the officer, as he turned the hand over.

"There 'tis." Caipo pointed to the underside of the cuff with his other hand, while still holding the dead wrist. If Aoren moved to look at the wrist at the Officer's angle, then he would see the source of the magic. An interesting triangular sign. Aoren's knowledge of glyphs would allow him to easily recognize what it was. Caipo gave Aoren a pat on the back, before explaining to him.

"I don't know much 'bout how they work. But these, here, 're called 'Magecrafted Cuffs'. Nifty sort'a magic that'll stop magic. Ya know what I mean? Somethin' to do with that squiggley thin'. It like opens a circuit or somethin', I dunno. Glad ya found it, boy ..." After Aoren had see the glyph enough, Caipo tried to place the hand down gently, which resulted in a loud thunk on the table as it fell back into place. Caipo took a step backwards, looking around the small Tavern for a cloth napkin. Once he found one, he took care wiping his fingers before turning back to Aoren.

"Good. Good. But we ain't done yet." The officer seemed to turn into himself, a clear expression of thought crossing his face. His brown eyes flew to Aoren's after just a second. "'Xcept, I'm not sure how useful ya are now. No offense, but we're gonna hafta find out where these cuffs came from now. Yer 'Auristics' doesn't do that does it?" Caipo was stuck, the handcuffs wouldn't help him unless he could figure out who owned them previously. He didn't know about Aoren's divination, which would turn out to be the key element in moving the investigation forward.

[World's End Grotto] A Silencing Scene (Aoren)

Postby Aoren on August 30th, 2014, 6:11 pm

Magic that stops magic?

Rising from his seat Aoren examined the Glyph that rested at the center of the cuff. He was surprised he hadn’t noticed it before either. While he had been able to discern that the cuffs themselves were magical he was a little disappointed with himself that he wasn’t able to catch the Glyphing symbol inscribed upon their surface. It was a frightening thought. The only kind of magic that Aoren had previously known of that was capable of stopping other magic was that of Shielding which he practiced to some degree. Then again when Caipo mentioned the use of Magecraft, Aoren’s surprise was lessened.
Magecraft.

He had met two of them in his lifetime. The first was the Magecrafter of Syliras, Devandil Nightshade. It was knowledge of that man that had prompted Aoren to leave for Zeltiva and learn more about djed theory and application. The second was an Isuran smith who studied the craft and made mention of it some time ago when Aoren had sought to commission him for a blade. Eanos had been his name. He was the proprietor of Sultros Blades, a well reputed weaponsmith shop in Syliras. Everything Aoren knew about Magecraft told him that it was a magic that blurred the lines of what others were capable of on a profound level. Artifacts of astounding power and complexity were the trade of that magic. That was if one could afford to make them.

If these are Magecrafted and blended with Glyphing, whoever used or purchased them isn’t a street beggar. They are either a very skilled thief or exceedingly wealthy. Everything I know about that level of magic tells me these cuffs were not cheap. They are not something you would find loosely on any market.” This was of course all merely speculation. Aoren had no idea the kind of detail and practice it would take to forge these cuffs. He did know that it would have to be extensive. Another thought occurred to Aoren. It was almost an afterthought but one that made itself blatantly evident now that he knew what the cuffs were.

As of this moment I can only think of one place where someone would find an artifact like this. The University.” Even as he said it out loud the thought made perfect sense.

Think about it. What wizard would want to have an artifact floating around that could bind the powers of another wizard? More specifically, rogue wizards.” Aoren recalled the rogue wizard he had first encountered when he arrived in Zeltiva. He’d come to learn that there had been a breakout at the Scholar’s Asylum earlier in the Spring season. It made sense in his mind. What better way to round up rogue wizards than to fashion something capable of preventing them from using their powers. Given this new information Aoren saw the event in a mildly different light. He could of course be completely wrong.

He was going based purely on surface information that he could recall. It was all very circumstantial but he had no way of knowing that. For all he knew there was a wealthy man in Zeltiva who just happened to own a pair of Magecrafted cuffs or some very lucky enraged thief. At Caipo’s statement about Aoren’s Auristics the young man had to agree.

You are right. That’s the extent of what my Auristics can do. That is not all that I have at my disposal though. Just…trust me.” Aoren reached down rolling up the sleeves of his shirt exposing the Seer’s Lily on the back of his right hand. He did not explain what it was. Truthfully he didn’t need to unless Caipo stopped him. The appearance, the sheen, the slightly raised texture certainly spoke volumes about what it was. A gnosis. A godsmark. Stepping up to the chair he’d brought over before he leveled Caipo with a steady gaze.

As I said before, I will need to meditate. Will you make sure no one disturbs me?
