This lazy agricultural settlement rests on the swampy shores of the Middle Suvan at the delta of The Kenash River. The River's slow moving bayou waters have bred a different sort of people - rugged, cultured, and somewhat violent. Sprawling plantations of tobacco and cotton grow on the outskirts of the swamp in the rich Cyphrus soils, while the city itself curls around the bayou and spawns decadence and sins of all sorts. Life is slower in Kenash, but the lack of pace is made up for in the excesses of food and flesh in a city where drinking, debauchery, gambling, slavery, and overbearing plantation families dominate the landscape.

The Saffron Thief (Estrellir)

18th Summer 514AV
Morning - just after the ninth bell

Adelaide had defied her Uncle and she was already worrying about what would happen if he found out. After an entire day and a half fruitlessly hunting for clues as to who might have stolen such a large supply of Saffron, she had decided that to hire someone would be the best way forward. Aria had turned her nose up at the opportunity, deemed it beneath her and disappeared, hunting down some runaway slave with the intention of dooming it to whatever unpleasant end. In a way, Adelaide was glad for an entire day in Aria's company was stressful and would have put her ill at ease. Somehow, she had an element of trust in the Konrath and decided that Estrellir would not risk her professional reputation for the sake of some gossip. So, on the morning of the 18th - knowing full well that her Uncle would be in the city for most of the day and that he had a meeting with the Radacke - Adelaide asked the Konrath to swing by the house and see if there was anything she could do. Mercifully, the House was empty of everyone save Grandmother, who had locked herself up in her room at any rate, and the slaves. Father had disappeared completely, but that was not unusual and he was usually gone for bells.

She had spent a bell in her room following breakfast, working through the finances in order to budget for Yatmina Sitai's breakfast whisky but had not been able to concentrate - thinking about her using Estrellir, specifically against her Uncle's express desire not to use her. Was that dishonest? She did not know. Life on the Sitai Plantation had a way of warping one's sense of what was morally right and what wasn't. It was necessary, however, that her Uncle did not find out. After a few chimes passed, she had turned to doodling again, waiting for the clock to mark the beginning of the ninth bell. A intricate design was forming in front of her, a design for a wardrobe... she had always liked furniture and it amazed her own original some designs were. Silently, she sketched a couple of pillar-like decorations next to the swinging doors and took a moment to curl the foot of the wardrobe into lion-like wooden paws. Paws, or rather claws, on a piece of furniture was obviously a cliché but Adelaide could not think of anything better and was merely trying to waste time. Finally, a slave came up to tell her that the ninth bell had struck and Adelaide stood up from her writing desk. The sun shone blindingly in her face and she had to turn away, but not without taking the mild heat and blue skies as a positive omen.

"Today will be a good day." she told herself in a murmur, "Today, we'll hopefully find out the truth. Saffron, not to mention all the other items, can't vanish without a trace."

Waiting at the front porch, she could not help but wonder if she had done the right thing. If anyone betrayed her, they would pay for it dearly, but still there was the nagging feeling that it was her the traitor - a traitor to her Uncle, who has specifically ordered that she do not use the "Konrath Woman" as he put it and, thus, a traitor to her family... especially as she had already revealed the particulars of the situation the day before. She prayed that Viratas would give her strength to do what was best for the Dynasty, for there was no higher purpose for a caretaker. At least, she thought, she had managed to convince Estrellir to investigate for free, simultaneously assuring her that to do so would improve her standing with the Sitai family in the case where anybody should find out. That would allow her more employment in the future. Naturally, though, Adelaide had suggested this way forward more out of a desire to protect her own interests than to help Estrellir further hers. Furthermore, Adelaide had had the good idea of speaking to the slaves and servants beforehand, assuring them that if they cooperated with the Konrath and it led to a discovery as to what happened to the stolen saffron (and other vitals) they would gain favour and might even be rewarded. Of course, rewarding slaves was grossly unorthodox and perhaps even embarrassing, but Adelaide knew that she had to maintain their respect for her. She wasn't buying them... she was being magnanimous and gracious.

"Everything will go well. I've done everything I possibly could."

The Saffron Thief (Estrellir)

Postby Estrellir Konrath on August 19th, 2014, 1:47 pm

As she exited the carriage, Estrellir Konrath blinked into the bright sunlight from under the rim of her black hat and stretched stiff muscles. Something in her neck cracked before she tugged at her clothing, a gray tunic and black trousers coupled with dusty leather boots. The only article that revealed her status was the hat that sat on top of her braided ivory locks. An elaborate bow of violet silk wound its way around with the ends falling over the rim.

Hands in pockets, the Konti took in the Bloodflower mansion. As she approached it through a maze of roses, more kinds than she could count, she wrinkled her nose at the dizzying scent. Her head felt heavy with the promise of a pounding ache hanging between her temples.

With a small sigh, she slowed her steps and took a few deep breaths. In fact it was a lucky day... Just after the case with the ghost, Adelaide Sitai had appeared at her doorstep with a confidential request. At first her problem hadn't sounded that interesting, but the attitude and need for secrecy had intrigued Estrellir. So here she was. Gnawing at her lower lip, she looked up to the majestic white building. Someone had overdone it with the balconies. More importantly, the Sitai plantation was more familiar than she would've liked. The stakes were high, but she couldn't back out anymore.

Bring it on, Ovek. With every step on the front porch, her determination grew. With her reputation at stake, any more mistakes wouldn't do. What looked like a simple case could very well turn into political disaster. She took a deep breath and straightened before knocking on the door.

Past mistakes aside, Adelaide had been rather nervous herself, especially concerning the confidentiality agreement and Estrellir's visit to Bloodflower. Like the overwhelming scent of roses, something about her request confused the Konti. All the more reason to stay careful. While slaves led her to Roland's daughter, she'd stay attentive and observe her surroundings out of the corners of dark eyes.

As the light-haired woman stepped out from the carriage, Adelaide took a couple of steps down the steps of the front porch and plastered a smile on her face.

"Estrellir! Thank you again for being so... prompt." The Konrath was oddly dressed, but in as sombre a variation of colours as Adelaide herself, dressed in black tapered trousers and a black silk blouse. She had been rather too prompt in fact - Adelaide had not had the time to find her shoes and was looking at her guest, or rather her hired investigator, with a slightly weary look.

"I've already filled you in briefly, but I will now inform you of the exact particulars. We've had a theft, based purely in the Kitchen area - which I feel is suspicious in itself. The stolen items include two suckling pigs, a hunk of gammon, a couple of dozen eggs, some milk, nearly two thirds of our flour supplies, oats and corn, a lot of salt, cinnamon, sugar, all the yeast and a good deal of the butter, a few bottles of Wine and a couple of Rum. But that is not all. Most importantly, we've lost one thousand and forty mizas worth of Saffron." Adelaide turned on her heel and walked into the house, beckoning so that Estrellir might follow her, "I think I should show you the Kitchen first."

Adelaide led the way through to the back of the house and down a few stairs into an area set slightly into the ground, the utility and servants quarters. They passed a couple of doors and the young Sitai opened the one at the end. As soon as it opened, the smell of food wafted through. At that time in the morning, most of the Kitchen staff were either clearing up the remains of breakfast or catering to a couple of stragglers, late down to breakfast, if there were any. Of course, that usually only meant Grandmother.

"It's rather self-explanatory,"
said Adelaide waving a hand vaguely around the room - large and tastefully decorated. On one wall there was the large, open fireplace which, like the wall itself, was constructed of an old red brick. The other three walls and the ceiling had just been re-painted their usual colour, a pastel anis green, with white shelves and counters still in need of a lick of paint. There was a thick chartreuse rug, usually on the floor, but which was currently being wafted by a maid out of the backdoor, which was open. Plants, mainly for herbs, were dotted all over the windowsills of the large windows which let a large quantity of sunlight in, making the room look warm and welcoming. Over the large fireplace, hung large, ornamental silver plates emblazoned with the Sitai crest, something which Adelaide could not help but raise her eyebrows at, "but this is the Kitchen."

The kitchen went quiet a couple of ticks later as the mixture of servants and slaves realised that they were not alone. One kitchen maid turned around and immediately curtsied too deeply, something Adelaide attributed to the fact that she was newly employed.

"Well Miss Konrath. Your play."
she smiled sardonically, "I know nothing of investigation or detective work so, now, I leave things up to you. Is there anything more you'd like me to show you?"

The Saffron Thief (Estrellir)

Estrellir was greeted earlier than expected, but she still put a pleasant smile on her face. The signs of weariness in the corners of Adelaide's face and shoeless feet didn't go unnoticed as she was escorted into the mansion. A theft in the kitchen, only edible goods, no valuables. The motive seemed clear to her: survival. Of course, stealing tons of food, spice and alcohol could also be an attempt to cover up a more serious crime and distract, but anyone who counted on that underestimated the Dynasties. The Konti knew that among her own family no crime, however small, would go unnoticed for long. For that investigation, she'd assume the kitchen theft was a standalone.

As Adelaide led her down towards the kitchen, Estrellir swallowed and surveyed the surroundings as if she was seeing everything for the first time. The large open space, the few people milling about, the fireplace and various corners where cooking took place, she tried to see it all as if fresh paint had been slapped on it. As the employees went quiet, she willed herself to stand tall and proud like any Dynast would. Her violet eyes took in each and every face present, but none of the slaves looked familiar.

Exhaling quietly, she turned to Adelaide and spread her arms in a gesture of polite inquiry. "I understand if there are other duties you must tend to, but in that case I'd appreciate it if you left me with someone capable of showing me around the mansion or at least the parts the crime would've taken place at. I'd also like to speak to those that were on duty when it was committed, both kitchen staff and guard. Lastly, it'd be kind of you to give me a detailed account about your experiences and impressions. When you noticed the theft, if you found out anything else and if you have any guesses as to when and how it took place."

Licking her lips, she straightened and shot a glance around the kitchen. As she ran her left hand through ivory locks, releasing a few strands from her braid. It'd get messier as the investigation progressed. Since she hadn't come to pay a social visit, she didn't mind. Going through her mental list, adding and crossing out points, she concluded those were all questions for the time being.

Her gaze lingered on the stylized Seer's Lily on the back of her hand before it rose to catch Adelaide's. This time her smile had a predatory tinge to it. "I take it money isn't an issue... If I find the right person, an eyewitness, I could just ask my Goddess for a glimpse into the past. She always tells the truth."

"No. No other duties." In fact, she felt duty-bound to trail the woman that Dervain had judged unworthy of trust, "I'm completely at your disposal, and I am sure that everyone here will be more than happy to help you in your, uh, investigation. I personally don't think I can contribute much... everything I know was conveyed to me by the Kitchen staff themselves."

Adelaide swept a hand idly around the room to punctuate her point and smiled at the Kitchen staff.

"If you want to question them, feel free, but try to disturb their work as little as possible." And not irritate them but Adelaide didn't say that since surely Estrellir knew that a servant, or a slave, forced to show respect to an outsider they ill-trusted could make that servant or slave defiant or uncooperative to the point of being a nuisance. Adelaide was trying to convey through open gestures and warm smiles that the servants were not in trouble, but she wasn't sure if that would serve to decrease the hostility visible in certain pairs of eyes.

As the subject of money came up, Adelaide realised that her note destined for Estrellir must have got lost, which left her in the awkward situation where she had to make her request verbally. It would have been embarrassing if she'd let herself dwell on it so, instead, she moved very quickly.

"Miss Konrath. How about I show you the scene of the crime?"
And with a smile, she almost dragged the Konti into the larder, with the grace and dexterity of the Dynast, so that it would almost feel that it was as much the Konrath pulling at the Sitai as the other way around.

Adelaide closed the door behind her then, with a small sigh, turned around to face Estrellir.

"Miss Konrath," she started before saying, as a side note, "May I call you Estrellir?" and continued, "I have a strange request to make of you. Now, please hear me out before protesting. Naturally, if it doesn't appeal to you, then we can continue as though this conversation had never happened."

Adelaide absent-mindedly bent down to brush a sprinkle of flour. As she straightened herself up, she looked self-assured. The important thing here was to make Estrellir think that her suggestion was for Estrellir's sake rather than for her own... which was the truth. She reminded herself that it was therefore important to look competent and confident, something which years of acting had taught her - if you looked like you knew what you were doing (or saying) other people usually were more easy to persuade.

"You see, my Uncle - Dervain, the current magistrate - disapproves of you and your business. You have a bad reputation in this household and he specifically told me not to go to you for help,"
Well, it was no use hiding the truth, "However, I personally believe that it would be far from impossible to convince him otherwise, convince him that you can be of use to the Sitai Family and that you can be trusted to be discreet. Naturally, as soon as money is made the object of all conversation, then it is less plausible to believe a service rendered to be proof of good intention. Evidently, money is not in short supply and what I am asking would allow you the possibility of touching a great deal more money in the long run, but less in the short run... Adelaide wondered if Estrellir was getting an idea of what she was getting at. Probably. The Konti seemed far from simple-minded.

"What I am asking you to do is perhaps help us with this for free. I don't imagine it should take very long to find the culprit, but it would show proof of good will. Thus, you would be much more highly regarded and we would be far more likely to hire you every time that there was this sort of issue. On the whole, you'd benefit more from it than we ever would."

Adelaide finished with a smile and raised her eyebrows. It turned out, acting skill was about more than merely standing on a stage - they offered the confidence to speak plainly.

"This is where the saffron was kept," she said in order to diffuse any tension, moving over to the back of the larder and pointing out a large wooden box.

The Saffron Thief (Estrellir)

"I see." Estrellir shot another glance around the kitchen while the words rolled off her tongue. There had been a pointy edge to Adelaide's tone, just barely recognizable and probably missed by the servants, but the Konti took note. It went without saying that she shouldn't disturb their work. She'd also learned from experience how crucial it was, if possible, to make those under interrogation feel at ease. They weren't suspects, not at all. Estrellir nodded in understanding and smiled.

Her next remark sent the Sitai caretaker into a sudden change of pace. Merely raising an eyebrow, Estrellir let herself be ushered into the larder. "Certainly." When the door was closed, violet eyes narrowed. For a moment her entire body tensed as she watched Adelaide compose herself with suspicion. When the first words fell, she relaxed and nodded. Formalities should be dropped for effective cooperation.

At the same time, the little things in Adelaide's speech kept her on guard. The subtle emphasis of just who was Magistrate, the request to listen to everything before judging. No matter how confident Adelaide looked, Estrellir expected the worst. So she listened with features arranged into a polite mask.

When the other woman finished, she resisted the urge to roll her eyes. Instead she shrugged and spread her arms in an obliging gesture. "I believe I understand what you're proposing to me. The warning wouldn't have been necessary. How could I resist the opportunity to redeem my reputation with your Head of House?" Behind the smiles, Estrellir was hiding the remains of momentary shock. Of course, Roland would've talked to Dervain. His daughter, however, wasn't giving her that knowing look yet. She wouldn't even have hired Estrellir if she knew, would she?

"This proposal seems beneficial for both of us. I'll accept gladly. Here's to the beginning of what I hope to be a lasting relationship." Whether business or otherwise, Estrellir left open. She offered a webbed hand before leaning in. "I wish to clarify something as well, Adelaide. While I'll do my best to make your staff feel like innocent eyewitnesses, not suspects, I must consider the possibility of a mole in your household. I'd do the same if such a thing were to happen at Boldvine. For that reason, I'd also like to talk to you in private about each of the servants involved in the incident and your opinion of them. We can do this at your convenience."

Eventually she shifted to inspect the wooden box pointed out, looking inside, turning it around, observing the floor in its vicinity. She didn't expect to find anything, mainly busied her hands to digest everything Adelaide had said. After that, she straightened and nodded. "I'm afraid there is nothing to be gained from this place. Still, thank you for showing it to me."
