Kechaiya looked up at Amon with pure venom in her gaze. Yet again he had petched up what he was supposed to do. Could this fool be relied upon for anything? But the questions he asked were good ones. Her gaze was cast back downward. "Who you?"
"My name is Benni."
"You help kidnap children?"
He closed his eyes slowly, nodding his head. Kech smacked the flat of the blade against his already shattered nose, causing him to howl in pain.
"Why?"
"My family was starving, I needed money, they said if I helped them, I'd be paid. Please, I have a son."
Kech whacked him on the nose again, a bit harder this time, "How become like this?"
"I got cold feet, didn't want to help them anymore. They beat me and turned on me, left me behind. Please don't hit me again, I'm begging you."
Kechaiya considered it. The sorry state that he was in seemed to support his story. "If let live, what you do?"
"What?"
She whacked him again. Crying, "Go home to my boy!"
"You know who take children?"
He shook his head, "They were just guys, like any other. Never said names, never mentioned a gang. Nothing. Like ghosts."
She looked up at Amon, "Move beds off legs."
"How you contact them for job?"
"I didn't. They found me at the Pig's Foot. But I'd never seen them before, they weren't regulars."
"I believe you. So here what happen. We carry you out, dump you in alley. Wish you best of luck. Like you did to orphans. If you live, you need leave town with family, never come back."
The man crying nodded, "Thank you, thank you. I'm sorry, they were just so hungry."
Kechaiya nodded, standing up. She wiped her bloodied blade on his shirt, glaring daggers at him. It was his fault this happened, but not completely. Starvation was a powerful motivator. But other people had managed to find food without resorting to this. For a brief moment she considered going back on her word and slitting his throat. But she resisted the urge. Back to Amon, "Help get him up, get him outside. I need check children, take to main Orphanage, to Jillene. You take care of him." With that, she abruptly turned and left the herbalist with the wounded man. The children were the most important thing right now.
Making her way out the door, she saw no one. She called out, "Kids?" After several agonizing two popped out of alleys and approached her. "Where the others?"
"The woman that came out scared a bunch of them off, they ran to Jillene's. We tried to follow her, but she disappeared."
Kech masked her disappointment with a smile, "Is okay. You safe, all matters. We go Jillene's now." She took one hand from each of them, and they began the short journey to Jillene's, Kech trying to leave her anger and disappointment behind. But someone would have to pay for this. And she knew Noven would not stand idly by.
