Kuvarakh turned away from Phobius long enough to roll his eyes. The boy continued to be insecure to the point of near debilitation. He was probably the most likeable person the Nuit had met in his hundred and fifty years, but still acted as though his presence was a bother. He turned back with a sincere smile, "Nonsense, Phobius. You're always welcome. You've been doing a splendid job for me, and...oh, that reminds me..."

As the hunter introduced himself to Phobius, Kuvarakh tried to remember where he'd placed the sack of mizas he'd set aside as pay for his "courier". He suppressed a grin at the thought of how the Inartan would swell with pride at that choice of job title. He'd never withheld his opinion that it was vastly preferable to "messenger".

Kuvarakh suddenly realized that it seemed to hinge on him to decide if the conversation he'd been having with Redire was to be shared with Phobius. He took it upon himself to make the call. "I see no reason why Redire should not be privy to the fact that I'm paying you for working for me, since he and I are currently working out having him also work for me. It can hardly be any setback to our negotiations for him to see me pay up."

He handed the bag across the counter to the vividly red-headed young man. "There you are, my boy. Three hundred mizas." He was gratified to see the surprised look on Phobius' face. It was endearing to see the youngster hesitate to take the bag, as if afraid there was a mistake. Kuvarakh could practically hear the boy worrying that he'd end up in trouble if he took more pay than he was expecting. Kuvarakh decided to extend the mercy of an explanation.

"As I said, you've been doing a splendid job. You're getting to know your way around this city better every day. You've done some jobs for me that didn't really fit into the 'courier' job description. AND, you always bring a smile with you. I decided to give you a raise to 3 gold mizas per day. That, and a tip, to make it an even three hundred." He winked, "Don't spend it all in one place."

Then it occurred to him that Redire might need a guide to get supplies. "Uh...actually, stick a round for a moment, Phobius. We might need you." He turned to Redire. "So, actually, 'Kuvarakh', IS my first name. My last name is 'Lashman'. I supposedly had a distant ancestor who delivered the punishments on some vessel in the Zeltivan navy."

He shrugged with a slight grimace, "Anyway, that's where I heard it came from. So, I'm certainly willing to help you get as safely outfitted as possible, If there's still supplies you need. But naturally, it will come out of the return on your hides and leathers. As for tips on hunting or regional flora and fauna, I'm afraid you're probably better off without MY advice. And as far as the number of hides, that would be up to you. Whatever you feel that you can lug back to town without too much trouble."

It turned out that Kuvarakh had figured out what he'd come to the shop for, already. The alchemist was either a mind-reader or had really strong intuition, and for some reason the former sounded like the more believable of the two. Phobius turned away from Redire to give the man a smile, then watched as he went over to his counter to get something. It was nice to hear that he was still offering jobs to people, and a new worker meant a new person to get to know. Glancing back at Redire, Phobius quietly wondered how old he was; he seemed younger than most people he'd met, so his mind settled on twenty years or so, but he wasn't sure if he should ask.

Then Kuvarakh was handing a tiny coin bag to him. The boy took it, surprised with its weight and how it took up most of his hand, and was confused until he was told how much money it was. Three-hundred mizas...?! Had he really earned that many, or had the alchemist made a mistake in counting them all? Shocked, Phobius stared at the bag for a moment, then looked up at the man and blinked.

But no, it sounded as though the amount was right; Kuvarakh had simply been kind and given him more money, for the season. That was what Phobius made of it, at least, and he beamed with pride at the man's compliments. Being a courier was a fun job—the only job he'd ever had for this long, too—and it was great to know that he was doing it well. He tried his hardest.

Well, his mission of the morning had been taken care of. Phobius guessed that it'd be a good time to leave, now, but then Kuvarakh told him to stay, so he kept himself still. The alchemist went on to tell the hunter more things, and the boy had a sudden feeling that he was new to the city. He'd never seen him around, before, and he'd gotten to know a lot of people over the last few seasons, especially the ones at the inn, since he saw them everyday.

"You're new here, right?" Phobius spoke up once the man had finished, looking at Redire. "I could show you around the city, if you wanted me to. I mean...maybe not right now, if you're busy, but whenever you'd wanna go around and see all of the important places, I could help! I wouldn't get us lost, either...! ...oh, and thanks, Kuvarakh. I was actually thinking..."

And then he paused, unsure as to whether or not he should say the things he wanted to say, next. After all, they were only the beginnings of ideas, and he had a lot of planning that he needed to do...but it wasn't really something that needed to be kept a secret. It would be if it was a surprise party, but...when you were the one making it, it was hard to surprise yourself.

"I was thinking of...planning a party," the boy continued. "Since it's Winter, now, and my birthday's coming up, I think I want to have one...and I'll invite everybody I know. Like you! And Mister Ekans, and Miss Maya, and...and you, too!" he added, looking at Redire with a hopeful smile on his face. "I'm gonna make invitations, though, and...well there's a lot of stuff to do. So it's good to have money."

"This is speech in Nari."

This is thought.

The Pursuit of Knowledge...and Employment

Postby Redire Whitevine on December 23rd, 2014, 5:09 pm

Redire was shocked when he saw the transaction being made between the two individuals. Not because it was his first time seeing it in person, but because of the amount given to Phobius. It didn't make sense in his head once he tried to do the math, but it clicked once Kuvarakh explained himself for the amount.

Taking a moment to inspect the Inarta, he recalled how the boy was...insecure...when he came in, compared to the proud expression he gave when his employer praised his work. Kuvarakh certainly knew how to handle the situation, and this small revelation would bring a smile to his face...if it were indeed true, he had a knack of over thinking things, and that often led him to false assumptions that ended up with him getting scolded or lectured.

Lost in his own thoughts, the young Vantha almost missed hearing Kuvarakh mention that his last name was 'Lashman' and a distant relative within the Zeltivan Army. It seemed like a dark memory, due to the grimace on his face, so Redire decided not to pursue the topic. He did. However, nod at the mention of hides and would consider buying a rucksack at some point to hold them on his way back.

Looking back at Phobius, he heard the question being directed at him and smiled, "Yes, I come from Avanthal. This is the first time I go out to see the city." He let out a chuckle, "And though this city grabs my attention, I admit that the paths can be...confusing." At the mention of a guide, his eyes beamed to a deep shade of purple, reflecting his happiness, but the sight might have been strange to the Inarta if he hadn't seen a Vantha before and he nodded eagerly, "It would be great if you would be my guide, if you are not busy today, then we can go. But if you have plans, we can go tomorrow."

It was an exciting feeling to have these people help him, normally it would be the other way around, but just when he thought Phobius was done speaking, he had mentioned a party and that he was invited. The thrill of a party was there, but he then started to think of what to get as a gift. His mind started racing with different ideas, but decided that it would be best to make something and personalize it.
Going back to Phobius, he nodded once more and said, "I would be happy to go! I am looking forward to it already!"

The smile on Redire's face was rather obvious, but he let the mirth continue, he didn't attend many parties back home, but a party here would most certainly be interesting and he revealed in the thought. This was turning out to be a great day!

Please subtract 300 GM from Kuvarakh's ledger in payment to Phobius.

Also, keep in mind that Avanthal is very far away. Without the specific lore for the Whitevine Hold or something similar, Kuvarakh wouldn't know about the holds. If I missed the lore, and he does have it, that's fine. Just try to keep OOC knowledge out of IC posts, please.

Otherwise, solid writing and a good intro for Redire into both Kuv's and Phobius's plots!

Tiny thing here, the shop is actually pretty non-descript from the outside.

Good work on language! I appreciate the difficulties with reading and the minor comprehension. I'm interested to see what Redire does in the city!
