We're Going To Need Boats
Winter 88th 514 AV; 12th Bell
Location: Zeltiva's Bay

The word had been spread like wildfire to every able-bodied man that considered hooks and nets his trade, the ice caps had finally given way and shattered apart to allow fishing to commence once more. Now every fisherman with any right sense in his mind knew the opportunity stood at hand, and already quite a number of boats big and small decorated the waters of Mathew's Bay within the city. Ricky of course stayed within city limits seeing as how his own boat, provided from the Sailor's Guild itself, wasn't necessarily equipped for the larger body of water like the others. This didn't sway him however from the well sought out hot spots where fish were likely to be found, thus with a carefully placed next and several empty baskets ready to be filled in the back of his rowboat as he stood tall and proud. The hunger made his limbs feel weak but he didn't have to worry about that much longer now, he was after all going to be hauling all the fish he could imagine before the day would pass.

The air of course still felt frozen from winter but not even the cold could dim the motivated fire that sparked in his chest, after a long season with almost no food to have now had to be the perfect time for the ice to finally break apart. We'll be eatin' damn good t'night! The thought rang in his head whilst he finished the knotted rope for the net, he didn't waste time in his decision to toss the net in the spot he picked. Once that had been hurled over into the water and he had given it enough rope to sink down some, he then proceeded to reach for the fishing rod he brought along and prepped the line. He took the lure he intended to use first and fed enough twine to tie it while enough remained for the hook, the line then slid through eye of it until nearly what looked two inches worth of twine had been fed through. From there he followed the same steps he always used as before, wrapped the line around itself above the eye four times, and then he pulled the rest of the line through the loop he'd created with the twine.

Next with the twine placed between his lips to lubricate the knots with saliva, he then finished those knots and eagerly twirled his rod around to get a natural feel of it. Satisfied that he'd prepped his weapon of choice the fisherman then cast his line out, watched with a grin as the hook and lure soared far out into the air before it dipped into the waters beneath. Finally with his tools prepared the time to bring home a large haul wasn't too far away, he could already taste the cooked meat now just by thinking about it.

He figured the best way to fill the net and obviously help move the lure for the rod would be to get the boat moving some, so Ricky decided to go ahead and get a little motion going for the boat with a round push of the oars, and then a hard pull towards his upper body to propel the boat through the water. If there had been one thing his upper body strength proved to be useful for, it was definitely rowing a rowboat if not some other heavy weight duty larger folk could handle. But damn if his limbs feel tired already from doing without some decent food for a bit, skimming out on a full course meal definitely hasn't been the greatest thing for the burly fisherman.

Aside from his weight loss though he still seemed healthy enough, although his muscles begged to differ granted they felt like jam. That would keep him from putting in all the effort he could into hauling a large quantity of fish home, so that the family would be eating like a king tonight after all this was done. Ricky continued with a few more strokes before he finally allowed himself to relax and take a breather, his eyes locked on the pole as he hoped to see activity with it soon. Fortune favored this fisherman today it seems, as the line and pole both twinged from a tug that repeated several times. Shyke yeah! He leaned forward without a moment to lose as both hands grasped the handle of the rod, his feet placed at the rim of the boat as he reeled the line as fast and hard as he could. For a few ticks he would have to every so often ease the tension he felt on the rod, before he would finally tug against the fish that worked against him.

Each tug helped bring the fish just a wee bit closer to his boat, while each sign of tension felt in the line was met with ease, the final moment of the long haul close at last as Ricky jerked the rod further back to bring the fish out of the depths. Wooh! One down! He enthused as he proceeded to discard it within one of the baskets, he looked over his shoulder when he heard some of the other fishermen cheer and woo, their nets filled with fish too as they reveled in their haul. It brought a grin to the surface before he cast the line out once more, hopeful that his own net might've caught some fish by now. Now wasn't the time to check of course, seeing as he'd only let it down earlier. Right now he just needed to focus on the rod and trying to keep the boat moving just a bit, so long as the lure and net were both moving he'd keep gathering fish on his own.

That's all that mattered at this point.

For a while he kept the same motions that involved rowing the boat and snagging a fish here and there with the rod, until Syna herself had proceeded to drift downward from the center of the sky. That could only mean noon had passed already and sooner than anyone had noticed, it would be that time to bring their haul back into the city soon, and see to it their pay is earned while they fed their families at home. Today many a Zeltivan would find themselves with filled bellies, or at least the fisherman hoped such to be the case as he thought about it. Already one of his baskets appeared to be nearly halfway filled, granted it'd been done with just a rod that felt like a real achievement, at least when he considered how low on luck the city as a whole had been.

A real big freeze over like this hadn't been something they were prepared for, yet somehow everyone remained strong together and Zeltiva pulled through, albeit barely considering there had been many starving folks in dire need of food. 'fter t'day we'll not 'ave t' worry 'bout anymore ice, lookin' at de sea now Oi can say d'ats fer sure. He admired the large amounts of ice that had broken apart, while smaller chunks that had broken apart floated off elsewhere. The ice was melting and that could only be because Winter was actually nearly over, and granted today marked the eighty-eighth day it definitely felt welcome. Syna's warm rays 're gonna return soon. The thought brought another warm grin to his face, already he felt ready to lose the extra layers he had to wore, and allow his skin to breathe once more like he did nearly every cool season.

Of course now the time for daydreaming had passed, and he decided to go ahead and check the net and see what he'd managed to catch. With a lean forward and grasp of two hands on the rope, Ricky hauled the net towards him with strong wide pulls as each hand moved before one another along the rope. Each long tug brought the net closer and closer to the surface until finally it reached the side of the boat, its weight slightly heavier compared to when he first released it into the depths below. He'd managed to actually gain a small number of fish, enough to almost fill the rest of the first basket he'd started on. With a laugh of triumph Ricky pulled the net over to stock the basket next to him, eagerness quick to motivate his body past the state of weariness he felt. It'd been too long since he'd been out in the waters like this, too long since he'd given himself the proper workout every fisherman face. Either way he wouldn't squander a day like today, no today was all about bringing in the long haul, and taking home what could be spared for three full bellies tonight.

  • This was a nice easy read. It was good to see that you played out the fact that Ricky was weaker than normal due to the food shortage.
