Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

Aoren had made the intelligent decision and after seasons of travel, purchased himself a lockbox. He sat within the confines of his quarters within the Sanctuary staring at it quietly. Within it he had placed all of the wealth that he possessed. It was a miracle that no one had stolen from him in his travels, mostly because he’d been careful and kept his valuables either close by or tucked away. He was settling down in Riverfall however and lugging around all of the coins that he possessed was impractical. As great a deterrent as a lockbox was though, Aoren was going to take extra precautions against possible theft. It was not that he believed any thief would be particularly successful in getting within the walls of the Sanctuary. The focus of the exercise was more to assist in him successfully establishing wards to protect other objects using his Shielding.

In many ways, Aoren still considered himself a fledgling wizard. Despite the above average array of powers at his disposal he had yet to truly push himself. There was still so much that he knew nothing about or was simply unable to accomplish where he presently sat in terms of his magical prowess. There was a time when he would have shied away from such ambitious thinking. Aoren had come to the conclusion that it was time to stop running away from who and what he was. The whole of his life in Syliras he had been caged. The city had been good to him but it had sheltered him from the reality of who he was and what he could become. He did not begrudge Syliras. He had many fond memories of his life in the city but looking back he knew that he could never make it his home again.

Raising a hand he drew upon the reserves of his djed. The piece of himself that sang with the vibrancy of his soul, it was curious to him how natural magic in general was becoming to him. Bringing his hand over the top of the lockbox he exhaled. As he did his djed welled up in his palm in a liquid like state. It oozed out over the surface of the lockbox. The Seer continued to will his djed into motion until such time as the top of the lockbox was covered.

He ceased feeding djed to the rudimentary Shield then touched his fingers to the edges of what was in place. Diligently he pulled at the edges urging the Shield to expand over the whole of the box. It took but a few minutes until Aoren had successfully coerced it into spreading out into a layer roughly half an inch thick around the box. He checked the consistency of the Shield to make sure that it truly was even before nodding to himself. He was happy to have progressed to a point where the difficulty of actually forming a Shield was behind him.

The task that lay ahead was discerning the manners in which to properly expand upon the basic principles that he knew. Shields seemed to him, temperamental things. They were bright with personality as they were woven with purpose. He had yet to every bear witness to another Shielder’s magic but he imagined that all of them would be quite varied. Reaching up, Aoren plucked a hair from his head with a slight wince. Extending the single strand of hair down to the Shield he touched it to the flowing surface. The hair was taken into the Shield much like one would expect a single strand to be swallowed up by a puddle. It swirled within the Shield gaining a shimmer to it that brought much curiosity to Aoren.

He stirred his djed into motion once again drawing a layer of it to his eyes that he might bear witness to the powers he was working with on a finer level. Aoren worked on bringing his own aura in balance with the aura radiating out from the Shield. The Shield itself did not look vastly different from the way Aoren normally perceived his Shields. He supposed that had to do with the fact that he was the one creating them.

The strand of hair however was interesting to behold as it lay there, trapped in the weave of the Shield. The djed of the Shield seemed concentrated on the strand of his hair. Tendrils of powers veined their way across the surface circling around the hair like jagged ripples. Aoren touched the tips of his fingers into one of those veins. He nudged it through the weave of the Shield touching it to his strand of hair. The most fascinating thing took place then, the vein glowed latching on to the hair flowing into it as opposed to flowing around it. Aoren was astonished. It was a beautiful thing to behold under the gift of magical vision. He gazed at the other veins watching closely to see if they would perhaps move on their own following the lead of the first vein that he had connected to his hair. They did not move but that was not discouraging.

Touching his fingers to another vein of power, Aoren threaded it through the weave of the Shield until it latched on to the blond strand of hair that floated there. The string of hair itself was situated at the center of the lockbox’s lid. The Seer continued to move each vein into contact with the hair aided by his Auristics. At witnessing the weave before him, Aoren found himself regretting not performing such a feat before. It lent him insight into the means by which he could manipulate his Shield on a closer level. He made a mental note to involve such in-depth examination of his Shields whenever possible in the future. When finally each vein was touching his hair, the Shield glowed brightly before a light passed into the strand and stayed there. Aoren noted a definitive blankness to the Shield’s weave then. It was as if it were listening, awaiting guidance from the hand that made it.

Bringing his hand to rest upon the lockbox Aoren provided that guidance. He breathed easy, still watching the reactions taking place through Auristics. With his hands in place he concentrated on exactly what it was that he wanted the Shield to do.

Allow only me to pass.

The Shield thrummed to life, responding to the mental nudge. Aoren watched as the light that glowed within his hair pulsed outward over the Shield. Still, it felt incomplete. He repeated the mental command.

Allow only me to pass.

Another pulse rippled outward into the Shield. This time the pulse returned back to the hair. Aoren repeated the mental command one last time.

Allow only me to pass.

The ripple went out from the hair and upon returning the light dimmed as the djed within the hair itself was interwoven into the Shield. It was an impossibly interesting thing to behold watching his djed essentially absorb itself. The hair was slowly dissolved until the information that was needed from it was dispersed throughout the Shield through the veins that had connected to it. Aoren released the hold he had on his Auristics. Using both Shielding and Auristics in tandem drew moderately upon his djed. He did not feel so taxed that he was at risk for overgiving though.

You are not yet a Master in these two magics, Aoren. Remember to be cautious.

The belief that one was invincible was easy to slip into when one commanded great powers. He had seen deranged wizards. He had heard the horror stories of once formidable scholars turned into ravenous madmen. That was not a fate he wished to share in. The last bit of work to be done to the Shield he could perform without the assistance of Auristics. He placed hand back onto the surface of the Shield. He spread his fingers wide over the cover of the lid willing another instruction into the weave.

Absorb djed.

The ability to block djed was intrinsic to Shields. Such an action damaged them however. It was better that they take in the raw power directed at them in the event they met the force of another wizard. This also enabled the Shield to last long after Aoren had set it in place. He would have to be certain to check on the Shield now and then. He did not believe himself so skilled a Shieldweaver that his Shields could remain indefinitely without routine observation and reworking. With the lockbox that would be simple. It would accompany him in the event he traveled anywhere for a long period of time. He would have to make a habit of checking on the other Shields he intended to weave around the Sanctuary and indeed Alements. He would not be able to approach the creation of those Shields in quite the same manner as this one.

Rising to his feet he ran a hand through his hair contemplating on how next to go about the task at hand. He needed more practice before he was going to take on such large projects. As far as his Shielding experience went he had only had a hand in erecting them around smaller objects. Beyond that, he was still discovering ways to adapt his Shields to certain tasks. There was a certain task that he believed would be immensely useful in protecting a building. Aoren retrieved one of his old linen shirts. The thing had seen years of use and would be replaced in due time anyways. Why not put it to constructive use? He draped it over one shoulder then grabbed his boots tugging them on heading out of his room. On his way out he retrieved some flint and steel that he might have a means of experimenting with what he had in mind.

Aoren made his way out of the horse gate of the Sanctuary heading toward the Sea of Grass. He continued walking a good distance away from the walls of the complex until he found himself a reasonable patch of dirt. It was not large but it would suit his purposes. Before getting straight to work on his experiment however he folded the shirt turning to the space he had to work with.

Aoren took a fingers and placed it in the dirt beginning the work of drawing a Glyph. He began with a simple Focus, nothing overly complicated. Drawing in the dirt wasn’t exactly his strong suit but the principle remained the same. When the outline of the Focus was complete he began drawing around it to create the Barrier that would contain the magic he had in mind. In relatively short order the core of the Sigil was completed before he moved on to the Trigger.

Aoren took his time with the Trigger. It had to be a bit more precise lest the Glyph activate sooner than was proper. As if quite literally writing a series of instructions Aoren shaped the Trigger thus,

When touched by fire.

Outward from the Trigger, Aoren began drawing a series of lines. Within those lines he scribbled the runes intent on guiding magic along a specific pathway. It was slow work but he kept at it. It was better to be safe than to be burned to a crisp. He continued to draw the runes in a circle around the patch of dirt leaving an open space in the middle for him to conduct his work. When the circle was drawing to a close, Aoren inscribed another Focus into the dirt. As with the first he constructed the Barrier. The Trigger he wrote to be activated when touched by flames. With that complete he closed the circle of runes stepping back with a sigh.

The last thing he wanted was for something to awry and he set the Sea of Grass near the Sanctuary ablaze. He leaned back observing the Glyph, examining it carefully to ensure that it was as close to complete as he could manage given the tools he had at his disposal. When he was reasonably certain, Aoren drew upon his djed. He cupped his hands letting it pool within them as res. With a bit of mental nudging he positioned the res above the Focus of the Glyph. Flicking his thoughts the res was transmuted to water and as the suspended puddle dropped toward the Focus, the Glyph came to life. The conjured water was absorbed into the Focus, locked inside until the right parameters were met to release it.

Aoren was feeling the weariness of his exertions. He was a formidable Reimancer, there was no doubt about that but he had not used this much magic before. The Seer chewed on his bottom lip briefly as he considered the wisdom in pressing forward. He was beginning to feel tired. He had created one Shield that day but he had been using his Auristics in conjunction with it. Now he was about to construct a second, experimental Shield and had used his Reimancy as a precaution. With a sigh he steeled himself. He did not yet feel as if he were in danger of more serious overgiving. Would he have a migraine? It was very likely. Would he be weary for the rest of the day? Absolutely. He would bear those burdens however. It was part of growing and pushing his limits.

Grabbing the shirt along with the flint and steel he crouched low within the center of the circle. He lay the shirt out flattening it as much as he could. As soon as that was done he set the flint and steel aside then drew upon the last reserves of djed he would tamper with that day. Breathing steadily he placed his hands upon the edges of the cloth. As he exhaled he pushed the djed outward that it might flow over the linen of the shirt. When there was a reasonably sized pooling of djed over the shirt, Aoren ceased pulling on his own djed to fuel it. A small amount of sweat beaded on his brow. His muscles were beginning to ache. The Seer moved to the opposite end of the shirt reaching down tugging at the edges of his rough Shield. He continued to tug, nudge, smooth and spread the djed over the shirt until it was reasonably covered.

He knelt in the dirt pressing a hand to the center of the Shield. Aoren drew upon his understanding of the element of Fire. It was familiar to him. As a Reimancer it was the very first element that he discovered. While he more commonly resorted to using Air due to its typically non-lethal uses, Fire came naturally to him. He supposed that was because beneath his disciplined exterior he was a very passionate soul. It was a side of himself that he was beginning to embrace more and more since coming to Riverfall. He thought on the heat. He thought on the brutal and sometimes beautiful nature of fire. This understanding he willed to pass into the Shield then gave a single mental command.

Block fire.

Aoren withdrew his hand taking a moment to breathe steadily. He stared at the Shield. It would either work or it would fail completely. There was only one way to find out if it were successful. Stepping over the circle he grabbed a handful of the tall reeds of grass then set them on the dirt. Bringing up his flint and steel, with his back against the wind Aoren struck them a few times causing sparks to fly over the dry grass. It took a few tries but eventually the blades of grass caught fire. He quickly picked them up at the tail end not burning and placed the grass immediately upon the shirt.

The Shield flared. Aoren held his breath for a moment it appeared as if the Shield would successfully repel the burning grass. The Shield pulsed then cracked before collapsing like shards of glass. The remnants of the djed dissipated shortly after. What was left of the grass quickly burned touching the linen cloth. The Seer picked up a handful of dirt and tossed it over the fires rapidly dousing them. He ran a hand over his face with a weary sigh. There was a throbbing in his skull. His eyes felt tired. The muscles in his body were weary. Rising to his feet he reached over the circle taking a few more blades of grass. As before he lit them then set them on the circle of runes he’d crafted. Immediately the Glyph sprang to life releasing the conjured water. The flames were put out in short order.

Well, it partially worked.” That much was true. The Shield hadn’t been completely successful but such was the point of an experiment. He would simply have to refine his technique and figure out a way to make it work. Grabbing the charred, dirt covered shirt, Aoren made his way back toward the Sanctuary. He had a lot of work to do but he was determined. It would just take time.
