30th of Spring, 515 AV

Aoren approached the side of the great mare with caution. He stood so that he was within sight of the beast not wanting to startle it. Of the many things that Aoren was still getting accustomed to, the tending of animals was one of them. Tending to people he could deal with. He had some knowledge of how to apply medicine to a person but in the caring of animals he was sorely lacking. The horse was laying upon one side, breathing heavier than he would have thought normal for such a creature though he couldn’t be entirely certain. He had no real foundation to go on. As he stepped closer the horse whinnied, stirring as he neared. He came to a stop just a few feet from the horse. He paused considering how to approach the animal. The mare, was injured. He’d seen her limping whilst tending to some of his chores around the stables. As soon as she laid down Aoren had made it a point to examine her from afar.

From what he could tell she was avoiding favoring her front leg on the right side. If he knew the proper anatomy of a horse he would have thought on it in those terms. Alas, he had limited knowledge to work with. He took a step closer to the mare eliciting another shuffle and a whine from the horse. It was obvious she wasn’t going to let Aoren near her that easily. He sighed thinking on how to approach the beast without earning a kick to his ribs.

It occurred to him then that he did possess a power that might lend to calming the animal if he focused. Aoren took a seat in the hay just a few feet away from the horse, he kept his eyes trained on that of the animal’s doing his best not to lose eye contact. Resting his hands in his lap he pulled on his reserves of djed. The response was sluggish. He was moving the djed forward in a manner that was vastly unfamiliar to him.

The djed snapped back into place despite Aoren’s urgings bringing a small furrow to his brow. The horse shifted trying to get comfortable it seemed. The Drykas reached for his djed again willing it to move with roughly as much success as before. It would take a different tactic than simply pulling on the strands of his djed it seemed. Hypnotism was a magic that he had put very little effort into mastering. He searched his mind for a means of willing his djed into working a bit more cooperatively. When the notion struck him he rubbed his face.

It’s worth a shot to see if it works.” Clearing his throat, Aoren picked up a piece of straw rolling it between his fingers.

Far away, long ago, lost where few can remember.
Woven deep, inside a dream, the light of a glowing ember…

[Sanctuary] Mildly Mesmerizing Music

Aoren’s voice hitched slightly. His tone was soft. He hadn’t sung anything in years not considering himself very good at such a thing. Still, as he pushed the words out of his throat ignoring how off key he might have sounded he tried to will his djed to follow.

Hands they guide me, strong and sure.
Leading along through an endless storm.
Follow through a silver door,
Across eternity…

As he sang he tried to envision his djed flowing through into the song instilling notions of comfort, of peace and the thoughtful dream the song was meant to inspire. He could feel the djed responding better than simply willing it into motion. This was one of the first instances that he’d used Hypnotism beyond his initiation into the discipline. The voice with which he sang wasn’t strong as assured but he at least knew the words.

Eyes, I see them clear and pure.
A light that shines through the darkest storm.
Step across a silver door,
Into Eternity.

The horse seemed to be focusing on him a little more. Whether that was because he was singing or he was singing softly instilling his words with as much control over Hypnotism as he could, he did not know. The mare could have been staring at him in agitation for all he knew. Still, he continued hopeful that at least he might be able to calm the animal for a few moments.

Still I see, a distant glow,
Shining, dim in the ether,
Things our hearts used to know,
Dreams we no longer remember,
And a light, just a gleam,
The ash of that glowing ember.

Aoren felt a bead of sweat roll down the side of his face as he strained to keep hold of the djed he was using to propel his Hypnotism. He released it. His throat felt hoarse and parched. The Drykas sat there for a moment clearing his throat to free himself of the feeling. After a moment he rose to one knee moving closer to the injured mare. The horse shifted slightly but less warily than before. That was something he could work with. If he was at least perceived as less of a threat or a danger then he would take that. Reaching out a hand he stepped closer watching carefully to be mindful of any jerking motions from the mare. The horse huffed extending her muzzle slightly before pulling back. Aoren persisted until finally he touched the palm of his hand upon her muzzle. A smile touched his face.

See?” He cleared his throat of a slight rasp. “I’m not that scary.

Gently he rubbed her nose then leaned down to inspect the leg she’d been limping on. He looked at the joint nearest her hoof as it was what immediately drew his attention. Compared to its opposite, the joint looked mildly swollen. Aoren lightly touched a hand to the joint, the mare withdrew her leg in a jerky but swift motion with a huff and a nudge of her muzzle against his shoulder. The Healer and fledgling Hypnotist ran a hand over the mare’s neck doing his best to soothe her.

It’s okay, girl. I’m here to help.” Gingerly he reached for the injured leg as he reached for the tendrils of his djed once more. The djed was a little more pliant this time as he pushed it toward his eyes. He maintained as steady eye contact as he could whilst leaning forward to touch the leg.

Calm. I am no danger. I will not hurt you.

These were the thoughts he tried to convey to the animal. He was no masterful physician such as Caelum or a formidable animal caretaker like Kavala, but he hoped he could manage. As his fingers touched the swollen joint the mare snorted moving to shift away from Aoren. He was met with moderate success however as when his fingers touched the joint he released the hold he maintained on his djed and instead turned to the gnosis of Rak’keli. He was still new to applying her gift toward the care of animals but was there any real difference? The horse was hurt and thus was in need of healing. It was Aoren’s duty to see to it that such care was given to the best of his ability. As he believed and hoped would happen, the soothing gift of Rak’keli flowed from his hand into the horse’s leg.

When Aoren withdrew his hand the joint was noticeably less swollen than before. He suspected it had just been a sprain. Perhaps the mare had been being a little too playful and hurt herself. He hadn’t been there to see the injury take place but he was thankful he was at least able to offer some relief. The mare snorted nudging Aoren a few times bringing a smile to his face. He chuckled brushing his hands along her neck.

I take it you feel better then?” He shook his head stepping back rising to his feet. His eyes felt a little tired. It was similar to what he felt after staring at the pages of book for hours on end while studying. He squeezed them shut, both watering slightly. When he opened them he blinked a few times. Slowly the mare began rising to her hooves. Aoren reached out hoping, perhaps foolishly, that he might be able to steady her.

Easy. Don’t want to hurt yourself.” When the horse seemed to be steady on her feet, Aoren turned going to get a brush. He returned still approaching the mare from an angle where she could see him then touched a hand upon her side. The muscle twitched beneath his hand and Aoren set to work brushing her mane. He focused on getting what knots he could see out of the long hairs brushing in long steady motions. He took his time drawing a small amount of meditative calm from the rhythm. When he’d finished he gave the mare a gentle pat on the side before returning the brush to its proper place. He would follow up to make certain that she was faring well for another day and if the limp returned he would consult Kavala for guidance.

With that, Aoren departed the stables intent on going about some of his other chores around the Sanctuary. It had taken a few days but once Aoren had gotten comfortable with the routine of tending to the complex, it was not especially difficult work. He rather enjoyed the hard labor. It kept him strong and it gave him something to focus on when there were no animals in need of direct attention or what they suffered from were beyond his skills to mend.

He made his way to the horse gate from the barns taking up a broom as he went. When he arrived he began sweeping the floor of the gate free of debris from wind or weather. Many of the chores were slow repetitive things that simply needed to be done in order to maintain a complex the size of the Sanctuary. While it wasn’t too far removed from the city he felt it a good idea to maintain as much of the complex’s independence as possible. That might have stemmed from his upbringing in Syliras however.

Finishing his sweeping he returned the broom. The Healer clasped his hands behind his back observing the facility as much as he could. The residents were going about their daily routines as they always did. He was beginning to recognize the faces and with that he felt a little more comfortable around all of them. Exhaling heavily through his nose, Aoren set out for the tunnel leading to The Within.

Once there he made for the bath only it was not his intent to partake of the bathing. No, he intended to clean it. Along the way he retrieved a mop and bucket from one of the storage rooms. Hoisting the mop over his shoulder he hummed softly as he made his way through the training room and down the corridor leading to the bath chamber. Before stepping inside he propped the mop against the wall then tugged off his boots as well as his socks. Aoren rolled up his pant legs to just above his calves then set to work.

[Sanctuary] Mildly Mesmerizing Music

He borrowed the water from the bath itself filling the bucket. Allowing the bucket to sit for a moment he cleared the floor of any obstructions then set to work. Dipping the mop into the water he began in the far corner nearest the door leading to the corridor connected to the sea cave. With slow but deliberate motions he swayed the mop from side to side slowly sectioning off the bath. The residents of the Sanctuary were tidy people altogether, for that Aoren was thankful. He repeated the motion in every corner of the chamber until the whole of the floor had been mopped in relatively short order. With that finished he propped the mop up against a wall observing his handiwork. It would be several minutes before the floor was dry and he was able to put everything back in its proper place.

There were still several chores to be done around the Sanctuary. He didn’t mind. As he waited Aoren began humming staring at nothing in particular. He pulled upon his djed carefully finding it less compliant than before but with a little nudging he managed to push his power of Hypnotism into the tune. If song was what helped him focus the discipline then he would have to practice weaving the persuasive powers into it more often. As he hummed, waiting for the floor to dry, Aoren concentrated on feelings of relaxation doing his best to imbue those feelings in the Hypnotism. He measure the feel of it. It was not an easy thing dividing his attention between the rhythm of the tune and the underlying emotions it was meant to convey.

He had to pause several times. When he felt he had the measure and rhythm back in his head he began humming again. Aoren’s voice wasn’t what one would call strong in terms of its musical familiarity. Still, it was something to work on. With time he would grow accustomed to it, like everything else. He released the tight hold he’d maintained on his djed as a bead of sweat rolled down the side of his face. He stopped humming abruptly with a gasp. His breathing came heavier. His vision swam for a moment as the fabric of his being slid back into place. The neglect that he’d shown in becoming more adept at this particular magic, after knowing it for so long, was a point he would have to fix. Running his hands over his face he breathed steadily then glanced over the floor. It was dry.

Was I really concentrating that much that I didn’t notice?

The Seer and Healer shook his head going to move the objects of the bath chamber back into their proper place. When he was finished he picked up the mop and bucket glancing around the room one last time. Satisfied that it was clean, the Drykas man picked up his boots and made for other parts of the Sanctuary. He kept a hold of the mop and bucket. It was his turn to clean the privy. He couldn’t say he was looking forward to it.
