First hit of the hammer.

Upon reaching the place his mouth dropped, he never had really any idea of what he should have been expecting, his best idea would be maybe multiple buildings each with their own shop and forge, just like the rest of the city and nothing like the open aired area in front of him. The sheer size and the amount of large forges that were running from within. He had slowly walked around and peered into a few of the working stations they had their, few of the workers noticed him and waved him closer as he watched with amazement at the skill they, the grace that they had with a hammer outmatched what he could do with a sword. He proceeded to spend the rest of the day around the forges, watching those at work and he only left to go out and get a loaf of bread as well as some cheese when his stomach starting demanding he do something about it.

When the sun started to set he went back to the Housing Authority to just double check that he had done everything he could to get a place to stay as soon as possible, the man was still working when he arrived and laughed at Tiath when he enquired. "Look, Ill personally take a look around for what we can do tomorrow, but until then you will have to look at renting a place at in the Nettle district" Tiath nodded and thanked him for the advice and headed for the door.
"If you don’t mind me asking how come you've come to Syliars" the man asked.
"I came here to learn how to be a blacksmith" Tiath answered honestly with a pang of regret. "Sorry Father" he thought to himself.
The man paused and thought it over for a moment "Come back tomorrow as early as you can alright?" With no amount of prodding from Tiath would make the man elaborate more on the subject.

Tiath was already glancing around before he reached the desk, trying to work out who he should go to in order to find the name on the note. None of the blacksmith had noticed him, each of them mired by the tasks that they were working on and none of them seemed to be finishing any time soon. Tiath was contempt to wait until one was free, it gave him more time to watch them at their craft, trying to pick up on anything from their actions that would be useful but it all eluded him. He ended up for their about an hour before anyone came to enquire about his presence.

"I was given a note and told to come here" He paused and looked down at the note again "To ask for Baldemar Flindt."

First hit of the hammer.

The blacksmith who had come glanced at him with a strange expression before walking off deep within the building. Tiath tried to keep track of him but he disappeared within between many of the larger forges. He continued to peer within, trying to guess who the name on the note was, however so many people were moving around from place to place and the waves heat made it hard to even tell where people were after a while. After a while of waiting he found himself become extremely nervous, starting to talk to himself within his head about what lead him here. "Why am I even here? I am following a note from someone I don't know, I really should just leave its-"

Thump!

A hammer smacked into the wooden loudly as it landed hilt up, jumping from his skin his hand moved to his sword instinctively as he turned, A large dark skinned man towered over him from across the table, at least standing a foot above Tiath’s height, he had a very lean face with shaved hair of what seemed to be brown hair. He wore a leather work apron with many tools within its various pouches and loops. His entire body was well toned from what could have been years of working within the deeps of the IronWorks. The man’s fingers drummed an irregular beat on the hilt of the hammer as he looked through Tiath as if waiting for an explanation for why he had been called away from his work.
"I'm going to guess that you're Sir Flindt?" He asked weakly, the man’s expression seemed unamused. "I was just given a note from a man at the housing agency telling me to come looking for you, I am not really sure myself" his gaze slightly lowering.

The towering man simply held out his hand for the note which he quickly received. After reading it for a moment he turned and starting to walk away before pausing. "I expect you to follow me" His voice was gravely but it matched his outlook. Tiath quickly moved in step and fell in behind him as they moved further into the ironworks. The heat from within was becoming slightly nauseating, as each forge they passed hit him with a wave of heat. After walking for a while they ended up in front of a forge which must have been used by Baldemar before he was interrupted. "Do you know how to work the bellows?" He asked dismissively "What do you know how to do?" "I, uh, I know how to work the bellows, yes. I was a striker for blacksmith in Mithryn, I was also taught some basics." "Well then show me" Tiath just nodded and moved to the bellow.

First hit of the hammer.

He started by pulling them out as far as they would go to get a feel for width before pushing it closed and feeling the air rush into the burning coals, causing a renewed wave of heat to press against him. He pushed the bellows open wide again before repeating himself, not rushing it as he knew it was about the amount of air he pushed in and a constant rhythm, not rushed bursts. He continued this for a while before leaning to the side to see what the blacksmith was doing.

"Concentrate!" The deep voice said from behind him, causing him to mess up the rhythm for a moment. He thought that maybe the smith would be using the effort for something, forging a bar or something but now he could feel his gaze watching him. He continued to pump the bellows for what felt like hours but more closer to one, the sweat was dripping down into his eyes and by that point his hair was plastered to his face, he had tried to keep the rhythm and a consistent air flow throughout it, it was easy at the start but the continued motions for so long were strange to him, the bellows being much larger than the ones from the smaller forge in Mithryn.
"Enough" the voice sounded from behind him, pushing the bellows closed one more time before turning around to face the man. The black smith pushed him aside and grabbed the bellows, taking a leather cord from the wall before tying them closed and hanging from a nearby peg. "Always tie and return the bellows" he said in a grunt. "You said you knew how to strike" He asked before continuing without waiting for a response handing Tiath a large hammer, "Show me"

Tiath staggered a little from the sudden weight of the hammer, the handle was about half his height and the head itself was about the size of both his fists, it felt very solid. He followed the blacksmith to the front of the forge to find that a large ingot of iron had been heating up the entire time and now was glowing white hot. Baldemar had grabbed a large pair of tongs and a smaller hammer and brought it over to an anvil, he placed it over the rounded horn and tapping it with his little hammer in the centre. Tiath breathe deeply and stepped forward as he brought the hammer up then down onto the spot where it had been tapped, the block barely changed shape at all but he knew this was to be a long process. Baldemar moved the block a little and tapped again just a bit to the side of the first spot, again Tiath swung the hammer up then down upon the heated block. They repeated this process over and over, at times Baldemar put the block back into the coals and order Tiath to the Bellow's to heat it up, each time Tiath remembering to tie them back up. Slowly the block of iron stretched out becoming longer and more rounded eventually becoming a round circle, every now and then placing it within the nearby tub of water. Soon the blacksmith stopped tapping and had Tiath holding the

The blacksmith soon finished with making the circle of steel and run over it with a keen eye, looking for any flaws within the design, without saying a word he got an walked off, leaving Tiath standing there holding up the hammer. Tiath took a step to follow but then held his place, keeping the hammer at the ready, thoughts of training with his father coming back to him, having to hold a sword in a position for extended periods at a time. Baldemar returned shortly and looked at Tiath with a raised eyebrow before placing a small pile of scrapped iron parts, most likely extra pieces from previous projects, on top of the anvil. "Make me some nails" was the order given and Tiath moved. He placed a few of the pieces within the forge and moved to the bellows to increase the heat. He continued to move back and forth between the forges opening and the bellows, the entire time able to feel the gaze of the blacksmith on him, every movement being judged. He brought the first of the heated parts out and glanced at it, it was an L shaped block, he started planning on what he needed to do, picturing it within his head and what he would have to do to get the shape.

He started by elongating one side of the block, hitting it with a hammer on a side a few times between the tongs before flipping it onto another side. Slowly the shaped changed until it was about the size of a nail, he glanced around looking for a chisel. He felt a sharp poke in his back and turned around to find Baldemar holding out a chisel, he slowly reached out and took it from him, a small smile creeping onto his face. "Thank you Sir" He turned around and placed the chisel at about where he thought a normal nails length would before hitting the end hard with a chisel. It didn't cleanly cut through on the strike, bending the iron, which made him flinch as he now had to redo the work of straightening it out. The second strike went through cleanly, a slight smile on his face as he grabbed the smaller piece of iron, flattening on end of the nail in a single strike knowing the harder part was going to be making the nail sharper at the end. Again he turned his gaze to the surrounding forge, looking for the next tool he would need.

In the end it was hidden beneath the table connected to the fore. Pulling the small grind stone out he put his feat on the peddles, making it turn to get a feel before putting the nails end to it, slowly spinning it around until it became a point. He put the result into the nail and went to work on making more of them. After the fifth he felt a heavy hand on his shoulder, "Show me", Picking up the five nails he placed them into the open hand. The blacksmith held them up and looked over them, even from distance Tiath could tell that they were not of uniform and each one was very different to the last, width's and height’s on each of them were different. "Now I want you to do this until you have five of them that are the same. If you manage to run out of scapes, go around and ask other smiths for theirs" He said before turning around and walking away, leaving Tiath within the depths of the forge to work on his own. He sighed slightly and turned to the bellows to start, letting out a slight sight of disappointment in himself.

First hit of the hammer.

Postby Tiath Othos on March 30th, 2015, 2:43 pm

The stars had come out a few hours before, smoke still rose from the iron works, blacksmiths still working on tasks and the strangest of people coming past to make job requests. Baldemar hung up his apron on his hook, a perk of being one of the longer termed blacksmith, he took the hammer and walked back to where he left the boy at the forge, he had expected him to come and find him ages ago but now expected to find the forge vacant. Surprise filtered across his face as he found the boy at the bellows, firing up the forge again, a bucket near the anvil that had been filled with nails with 4 more sitting on the other end of the anvil. Tiath jumped in surprise as a hand landed heavily on his shoulder "That’s enough boy" Tiath turned to the blacksmith "Yes sir" in a quiet voice lowering his gaze. "I expect you to be back tomorrow morning" he said gruffly before reaching and pushing him away from the anvil and picking up one of the nail that had been resting on it, running his eye over it before passing to Taith "Keep it as a reminder... Now go home boy." Tiath blinked before a smile came onto his face, nodding deeply he replied with "Thank you sir" before turning and picking up his gear he had taken off and heading towards open air.

Fresh air had never seemed so crisp before.

  • Location: The Ironworks
  • Baldemar Flindt: Blacksmith at the Ironworks
Items Gained:
  • Iron Nail
Comments: A nice little introduction to Tiath's new job in the Ironworks here. The length of your posts were quite nice, though there are some grammatical errors that you should look out for. I could spot a sentence left unfinished and a lot of really long sentences. A good tip for checking if a sentence is too long is to read it slowly out loud, only letting yourself breathe when there's a full stop - you may surprise yourself!

There were also a couple of sentence fragments, i.e. half a sentence, for example "The sheer size and the amount of large forges that were running from within." isn't a complete sentence - you could say instead, "The sheer size and the amount of large forges that were running from within was astonishing to Tiath.").

Another suggestion I'd make is to ensure that your job threads have blacksmithing in the majority of the posts - this will not only ensure you get more skill points for doing them but will ensure its viability as a job thread. I can see that this was a bit of an introductory thread though so I understand why a lot of the beginning was devoted to that!

All in all it's a lovely start - I look forward to seeing what Tiath discovers next!

Let me know if you have any questions and don't forget to edit your post in the Grade Request Thread.

Happy Writing!
