50th of Winter

Snow lined the streets, the wind was not as strong as it had been but there was still a subtle breeze. The click of the latch on the hard cold door told her that it was secured. Tucking the hand that had closed it into her cloak she made her way through the cobbled paths to her place of work. Hair was bound into a loose braid and anticipation swirled in her chest while boots clacked against the stones as she approached the eatery.

It was still early in the day and there were very few that were sitting at the tables around the room as she entered the tavern. Thin fingers unwrapped the knotted strings at the throat of her cloak as she moved to the back area. A soft hello was called out from Remi after she entered the kitchen. Grabbing the hood of the cloak she hung it on a hook near the back entrance and smoothed out her clothing. A simple skirt borrowed from her mother’s things, what little there was left, paired with a simple white blouse. The were a little small in length but she would have to make due with what was available.

She’d washed the things that she’d worn to the city several times but she needed something to change into while they were washing. Digging through her mother and dead stepfather’s things were necessary, even though it felt weird to go through someone else’s stuff.

“Seth will be leaving soon dear. I’ll have you take his place,” Remi turned and instructed Firenze for what she would be doing for the day. Only having been there for a few days now. Kevith had passed her off to Remi to handle. Not that she minded, Remi was less gruff and more understanding.

Clasping her hands in front of her Fire listened to the tasks that she’d be doing for the day. “Clean off the tables, sweep the floors, serve the food and collect the money. You’ll need to give Kevith the money that you collect. Make sure the fire stays going and help the girls if they need to get drinks refilled.” With a nod of her head she shooed Fire to the front, “alright get on with ya. If you have questions let me know, it’s fairly easy so don’t worry. Oh, if the patrons start to give you trouble let Kevith know, he’ll take care of you.” Remi winked at her as she pushed the door to the front.

Moving to the bar, Firenze took one of the aprons tucked in an alcove. Dirt and stains smudged the front of it, but she paid it no mind. Taking the strings, she wrapped the long pieces around her torso and began working on tying them into a knot. As her fingers worked feet carried her over toward a pail on the floor behind the bar. Her eyes didn’t come up to meet Kevith’s as he grunted a hello at her. Instead, she just nodded her head softly and grabbed one of the rags next to the pail. The once white fabric was now browned with stains despite the effort to clean it.

After dipping the cloth into the pail, nimble fingers wrang it out until only a few drops ticked against the liquid surface. One hand was holding the wetted piece as her other picked up the bucket to carry. She moved over to the closest table and dropped the rag onto the table, setting the metal container at her feet. For the next half bell, Fire repeated this process at all the tables that were empty, leaving the one that had patrons for last. She pushed the dirtied cloth against the rough grain of the table, going with the grain. Having learnt her lesson after the first few tables when just pushing it around the table in circles, against the grain, and in hapless motions proved fruitless. It seemed that those tasks had only pushed the grime into the crevices and then made it more difficult.

One finished with the emptied tables she moved to the closest one with a few men sitting on it. "Would you like your table cleaned?" she looked to the gruff, bearded man sitting closest to where she'd approached. His furs were draped over the chair behind him, shifting as he turned toward her. A toothy yellowed grin crossed his face as piercing blue eyes looked to hers. "Why sure!"

Hesitating for a moment, she brought the rag to the table as he nodded to the other two men sitting with him. They picked up their beverages as she sloshed the rag along the wooden top. Fire tried to make quick work as she scrubbed hard and fast against the surface. A look of surprise and then a furrow of her brow crossed her features as the man's hand rubbed onto her thigh.

Glancing over, she scowled at him. Clearing her throat she tried to give him the best menacing look that she could. "The table cleaning is free, but I cost way more than you could afford," she grabbed the rag and stood straight, removing his fingers that were pressed on her skin and placing them onto the table.

The two other men that were sitting at the table began to cackle with laughter, the one closest clapping the bold man on the shoulder. "Let the woman do her job, Rork." He gave her another toothy grin and took a big swig of his drink. Nodding his head, he dismissed her from the table and began to chuckle with the other two, turning back to his conversations.

Firenze turned away from the table and looked around to see if there was anything else that might need to be cleaned. Looking to the front of the Tavern she noticed that the front windows were covered with grime and years of dirt. She made her way over; the pail tapped slightly against her leg as she carried it. Placing it on the floor, she cleansed the rag and then set to work scrubbing the dark windows.

Cold panes were under her fingertips as she moved the cloth over the slick surface. Some of the panes had a tinge of frost on the corners, a sign of the threatening cold outside trying to claw its way inside the establishment. Its attempt was kept at bay from the large hearth on the other side of the room.

While she worked a nonsensical tune popped into her mind and Fire tried to hum while she cleaned. A high note squeaked from her throat, and she turned her eyes around the immediate vicinity to see if anyone had notice. No one appeared to be looking at her, so she continued to hum the random notes until the panes were clean.

With another dip into the pail, nimble fingers wringing out the now muddy water. Grit from the bottom brushed her fingers; she glanced to the rag, and it didn’t appear that the water she had was going to suffice if she were to finish cleaning around the establishment. Tossing the rag into the bucket, she picked it up and moved back toward the kitchen door.

A hand slapped against her rear, and she sidled between chairs through the area. Turning around sharply, she caught the men whom she’d previously met laughing heartily again at the table. Scowling, she continued on her way. Eyes not leaving until she bumped her hip into the edge of a table. Turning around her blonde hair whipping; she stomped off to the kitchen.

Firenze took a deep breath and released it, trying to cleanse the spike of anger. They were only playing games, their drunken state making toying with her seem like something fun to do, despite Kevith being near. Not wanting to cause a scene she set about to the task of dumping the pail outside the back into the cold. As she looked around Fire wondered if there were some way to get heated water.

“Remi, do you have any hot water that I could use?” Clearing her throat she spoke to the older woman who was mincing some cloves of garlic.

“Oh, I think I might have some left in the kettle, but I can’t guarantee how hot it is, it’s been sitting awhile,” she waved the knife that had been cutting in the opposite direction toward a countertop.

Looking around, she spotted an old pot. Setting the pail down next to it, she quickly tried to test the side of the metal kettle with her hand. It wasn’t hot, barely even warm. Tipping the pot into the pail, she poured in the last of its contents. After placing the kettle back, a finger came to her lips and tapped as her mind worked. It felt as though she should have something to help cleanse.

Golden eyes scanned the room. Potatoes sat heaped in a sack nearby, a bunch of dried twigs and leaves hung on the walls, and fresh vegetables were waiting to be chopped on the counter tops. She struck out using the potatoes or vegetables; those would make more of a soup than a proper means to clean. Although plain water could work she had seen the state that the floor was in, and Fire didn’t know if plain water would suffice, or just aid in making more of a muddy mess.

Moving to the leaves and sticks, she stuck her nose to them and sniffed. What felt like years ago a man had taught her about some herbs. Trying to wrack her brain for the information she spotted some leaves that looked vaguely familiar. Pulling a couple of twigs from where they'd been hanging on the wall, her nose pressed lightly against the dried green bits; they had a scent of lemon.

Shrugging she threw the leaves into the pail and swished the rag around in the water and waited for it to steep. A very light scent began to swirl from the water, and a smiled crept over her lips. With a nod of her head and a small winge of pride, she felt that it would help to make things smell cleaner, even if it didn’t pick up the dirt wedged into the crevices of the wooden planks.

The heated water splashed onto the floor as she moved near the large hearth at the back of the room. Getting on her knees, she tucked her apron underneath to protect the skin. Swirling the rag around Fire decided to forego ringing it. Slapping it onto the floor, making a fair sized puddle, she scrubbed at the stones around the hearth. Some of the water spilled too close to the fire, and the heat had begun to evaporate it.

Her finger covered with the rag worked into the small crevices, nooks, and crannies. The tune came to her again as she pushed into the cloth, using the weight of her body to give enough pressure to clean the soot. Lips pressed together as the unknown song rang from her throat.
