Michael Kyber

"It is the fear of death that makes people focus so much on their own lives that they don't care what harm they bring upon the lives of others. It is only by removing that fear that society as a whole can become a gentler place."

Race: Human

Gender: Male

Age: 21

Birthday: 9th of Winter, 495 AV

Birthplace: Zeltiva

Appearance: Michael is a young man in his early twenties with brown eyes, caucasian skin and short, spiky brown hair. He usually has a fair amount of stubble around his chin bordering on a goatee beard, and is rarely seen without a stern expression. His height and weight are both average, nor is his build notably different from average except for the beginnings of some muscle definition.

He bears a Lacun mark on his chest over his heart, a shadowy remain of a Cheva mark that shows he once loved someone greatly but has had that person taken from him. He is usually dressed in a set of Slyiran Knight plate armor without the helmet, with a white cloak and hood attached to the shoulders and and iron dagger strapped to his belt, but when not on duty wears a red short-sleeved shirt and black trousers with his dagger tucked away in the back of his belt and covered by his shirt. There is almost always a silver ring on the fourth finger of his right hand, and when on patrols or other knightly missions he carries an iron glaive with him.

Concept
As a member of the Syliran Knight’s order, Michael possesses many knightly virtues such as a passion for justice, a strong sense of duty and a belief in order and stability. Though rather pessimistic and serious his conviction to improve himself and the rest of the world is undeniable, and he rarely puts his own selfish desires above what would be best for the majority of people or for what he believes is a worthy cause for all. He wouldn't lie, steal or cheat without good reason (though if given a good reason would have no issues), and while he does have an eye-for-an-eye style of justice he would never be needlessly cruel to others.

It’s too bad then that he is possessed by a radical set of ideals. After the death of his wife Michael was found by The Returned, and was converted into a worshiper of Uldr. He follows the same dream as the Sylirian Knights; to unite the world into one peaceful, honorable and just civilization with the strength and law to enforce order, but believes this dream is unattainable unless all life can evolve into a state that need not fear death and so would not feel compelled to act out of greed or fear to continue their own survival. He also believes that the cycle of rebirth is a cruel and unnecessary system, a creation of the gods used to stop most mortals from becoming too strong to threaten them, and as such is very critical and wary of most gods besides Uldr.

Though he does not possess Uldr’s gnosis mark and is not an official member of The Returned he still works for them as a collaborator. It was on their urging that Michael is trying to become a Syliran Knight; so that he can spy for them and if necessary deceive them for Uldr’s purposes. Michael does strongly believe in the Syliran Knight’s cause, so much in fact that he would like to see the whole world united together under the Syliran banner once his dream of immortality for everyone is realised, and honestly believes that converting the Syliran Knights to Uldr's cause is in the orders best benefit. However Michael's allegiance is first and foremost towards Uldr, and he prioritizes the achievement of Uldr's grand plan above his own hope of bringing greatness to Syliras.

Generally speaking Michael likes and dislikes the same things you would expect a knight to like: strength, integrity and kindness will earn you his respect, and cowardice, cruelty and criminal acts, especially senseless murder, would lead him to despise you. Note however that this only applies to seemingly senseless or selfish actions; to him committing mass murders or the like in the name of a worthy cause, such as the destruction of the concept of death, is a necessary evil. While he would hate himself for it, Michael is not above committing terrible deeds the sake of creating what he believes would be a better world. He is a firm believer that the ends justify the means, and that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

On a personal level Michael is an appreciator of physical arts, such as dancing or acting, prefers colder or windy weather and loves seafood. By contrast he feels more uncomfortable in hotter climates, and is rather childishly insistent on punctuality. For a reason not even he is sure of the reason for he feels oddly comfortable and calm in the rain, and as such has no trouble making the most out of his water based Reimancy during wet weather.

Michael Kyber

History
Born in Zeltiva to Reuben and Maria Kyber, Michael’s life had involved the sea for as long as he could remember. His father was the captain of a cargo ship called the Silvatore with a reputation for his skill at navigating through stormy weather, and his mother was half Svefra who's old pod would sometimes come round to visit. With such a heritage it was no surprise that Kyber took to sailing as well; at age eight his father declared him strong enough for training and took him as his ship's cabin boy, and Michael took to it like a fish to water. At the age of 16 Michael had earned himself a place on his father's ship as a true sailor, and was starting to be groomed by his father to become a captain.

It was at that age that Michael met the love of his life; a fiery young woman called Grace. Despite her name Grace was anything but graceful; she was quick to anger, quicker to speak her mind, and so passionate and lively in everything she did that it blew Michael away. She too was a sailor, and had come to Zeltiva from a port city far to the east looking for a new life. She'd soon joined Reubens crew, and had almost instantly developed a rivalry with Michael that over time developed into a fierce love. Within the year the two announced that they intended to marry, and at the age of 17 Michael and Grace wed and become husband and wife, receiving Cheva marks on their chests after the ceremony.

Those next 4 years were the happiest of Michael's life. He had a passionate lover, an honest, well paying job, and was very well liked by his community. What more could a man ask for? The Sailors Guild was starting to recognise the level of skill he'd obtained for someone his age, and he and his father were starting to make quite a bit of money from their skill at sailing in storms.

However that success began to spell the beginning of his undoing. When he was 21 he and his father faced a difficult choice; whether to expand or not. Because of their ability to sail through storms others could not the Kybers had made quite a bit of money; after all they could charge whatever they wanted from merchants who needed their goods delivered quickly but were held up by storms other captains couldn't sail across. If they bought a larger ship they would be able to transport more cargo in a single journey, making them more profitable and more influential in Zeltiva. But in order to do that they'd need to spend a lot of money all at once, and if the next few years went badly they may not be able to make that money back.

It was then that Michael and Reuben were approached by a trader named Ging. Though foxish and untrustworthy looking Ging had a silver tongue, and seemed to have an eye for spotting people in need of money. He offered them a small fortune to brave the storm heading their way that night and take him and the group of hired mercenaries with him to Ahnatep, with only one small crate as the cargo. There was something off about Ging’s offer; it sounded too good to be true, and the cargo had this ominous vibe about it, but the lure of the money was too great for the two to resist. Reuben agreed, albeit reluctantly, and sent the order for his crew to prepare to sail.

That night they set off into the storm. Wind, waves and lightning battered against their ship, threatening to destroy them, but under Reuben’s lead the Silvatore kept pushing forward. After a grueling night the ship finally passed through the storm, leaving nothing but straight sailing from there to Ahnatep, and to celebrate another amazing display of their captains skill the crew threw themselves a party.

It was during the party, when the crew were drunk and defenceless, that tragedy struck. The mercenaries hired by Ging slaughtered the crew, including Reuben and Grace, and took control of the ship. At the time Michael had left the party to go throw up over the side of the ship, and had been alerted to the mutiny by the sound of screaming coming from the deck. By the time he'd rushed back to the party all the other crew members were dead, and Michael was forced to flee to a rowboat and escape in order to survive. Three days later he rowed back up to the shore or Zeltiva and told the Lord of Council what had happened, but since Ging was long gone and the Lord of Council was unwilling to waste resources on what he saw as a pointless hunt Michael was ignored. Two days later the stress of her grief caused his mother to die of a heart attack, leaving Michael completely alone in the world.

It wasn’t fair.

In response to his grief, rage like he’d never know flooded through Michael. He hated Ging so much that all he could think about was hunting him down and murdering him in the cruelest, most painful way possible. But there was nothing he could do. He didn’t have a ship, and even if he got one by the time he reached Ahnatep Ging would be long gone. Even though he wanted revenge so badly he simply didn’t know where to start.

And so without a proper target Michael’s anger was redirected towards something else; the world. What kind of a world was it where people suffered and bled for such petty reasons? Where chaos and injustice lurked around every corner? What was the point of life if it was only going to be taken away and cause suffering in the end? Consumed by grief Michel gathered up all the money he had left, rented out a room in a tavern and crawled inside a bottle. For the next six months he did nothing but drink all day and grieve all night, hoping he could find some way to fill to drown the pain he felt with alcohol.

In was in this emotionally vulnerable state that Michael was found by a Nuit by the name of Rahn, a follower of the god of undeath Uldr and high ranking member of The Returned. After overhearing Michael drunkenly cursing in the tavern Rahn realized that Michael desired the same thing as The Returned, the end of death, and recruited him into the cult. He fed him the cults bias version of the cycle of rebirth and of Uldr’s vision of a world where everyone was undead and immortal, and Michael lapped up this vision eagerly, seeing within it a potential for the better world he desired; one where fear of death no longer drove people to do terrible things, where nobody suffered the loss of their loved ones and where he might even be reunited with Grace again.

Michael pledged himself to Uldr and The Returned, swearing that he would lay down his life and his death for Uldr in order destroy the cruel cycle of rebirth and bring about the world Uldr dreamed of. Now with a cause to distract him from his grief he stopped drinking, got himself back into reasonable shape and started to face the world once again. He requested to be granted the mark of Uldr’s gnosis to show his commitment, however Rahn refused, telling him that he had another purpose in mind for him. The Returned already possessed a sizable number of simple foot-soldiers and magicians who bore Uldr’s mark, however Michael could be of better use to The Returned by serving a different purpose. There were many organisations that opposed The Returned’s goals, and perhaps the biggest of those was the Syliran Knights. The Returned had been trying to get a spy into the order for a while now, however becoming a knight required a great level of honor and conviction to the ideals of order and justice that most of their members didn’t possess. Michael however had the making of a decent knight, and stood a chance of infiltrating the order if he stayed unmarked and kept his newfound beliefs to himself. With him on the inside The Returned could learn what the Syliran Knights were up to, and could perhaps even manipulate them for their benefit.

Since Michael seemed obsessed with achieving Uldr's goals and desired power to make them a reality, regardless of any cost to himself, Rahn decided to teach him the basics of four branches of personal magic; Flux, Reimancy, Shielding and Auristics, so that he could apply as a mage-knight and use those abilities to better serve The Returned. Rahn himself had studied at Sahova many years ago, and was impressed by Michael's fanatical devotion to learning about the subject. Once Michael was ready Rahn gave him an address in Syliras where he could make contact with the local branch of The Remained and some equipment to help him get by. With one last piece of advice from Rahn, to never trust someone until you were sure you knew what they desired most, Michael departed on his journey to Syliras.
