There wasn’t a single tick between the end of Roh’s question and the start of the collision.

Right in the nose, full contact with the gripped steel, the sound of an awkward clunk being a point away from being almost comical. Rohka was flabbergasted as she stood watching the woman cover her face.

“Oh my gods, I’m so sorry, are you okay? I didn’t—“

She was completely caught off guard, sent tumbling to the floor with a gasp and a squeal of pain, the crowbar knocked out of her hand and her sling hitting the door that she’d held open. Rohka whipped her head around with tears in her eyes, yet again, two days in a row, her body getting stupidly abused, for no reason whatsoever. Her aggressor bolted out the door.

Roh was furious.

What the petch did she do to deserve this? What was wrong with that strange lady? It wasn’t like she wanted to smack her with the damn thing! Rohka didn’t expect to have the tool turn into a weapon so soon. The sibyl raged with confusion and a justified sense of hurt as she struggled to get a hold of herself. She was fine with choosing to be angry and upset in that moment. It felt good. There had to be a chance to gain an explanation at a later time, and she took pleasure in that plan through her pain. Rohka shut her teary eyes for a tick and begged Rhysol to give her the strength to face the pale woman again; she could not let this go until she could set things straight.

When she opened her eyes, Roh began to take notice of the heated conversation between the shopkeeper and the man standing before her. She sat rubbing her arm and grimacing in pain, picking up the crowbar as she listened, her emotions nearly calm in the wake of the barking anger. It seemed that this man was a member of the Ebonstryfe, and that the Larks apparently had a say in the business of this shop.

Rohka started to smile by the end of the stryfer’s spiel. She enjoyed the easy way he’d shut the shopkeeper’s trap through the threat of a raid. She would’ve laughed at the ordeal if it weren’t for the sudden shift in tone, the stryfer’s cold eyes turning to hers, stretching out an open arm to help her up. It was so strange—her calmness had vanished and her heartbeat now raced, her chest tight in the nervousness of being aided by the Ebonstryfe. She solemnly took his hand and stood, her voice caught in her throat as he spoke with such consideration—the kindness nearly unbelievable based on his demeanour just moments before.

A wise woman would certainly be distrustful of such a change; Rohka knew this, yet she chose to give in to the moment, nodding in acceptance of the apology he’d made on behalf of the pale lady. Truthfully, Roh wished to stay free of trouble and stress, so she’d forgiven the woman right after she was out of sight; but it wouldn’t stop the sibyl from seeking out some answers in person, if only to make peace and friendship. She blinked at the curious eye roll and was about to respond with inquires when the stryfer cut through to introduce himself.

Elias Caldera… Did he say he’d do anything? Roh’s brows raised instantly and a grin fell upon her face. Was he aware of what he was promising? He seemed to be truly serious. It was almost too tempting of an offer; too difficult to resist exploitation, had it been anyone else—yet the sibyl stood at once in admiration, a newfound respect formed for the Ebonstryfe. This man could only be an important member of Rhysol’s militant followers, if he were capable of promises so grand. And the fact that he would go out of his way to ‘make amends’ for her trouble, after gifting her with the crowbar a couple chimes ago, told her that her God was truly wondrous in his ability to form such generous, reliable men.

Rohka stood with pride, the smile having never left her lips, her dark eyes following his figure as he left out the door. Elias was too far ahead before she’d noticed the crimson bit attached to the back of his leg.

“Bloop!”

It was too late. Her slithering paper friend was gone.

The sibyl watched as he turned a corner, taking little Bloop with him—she was sure Elias wasn’t aware of it. She figured she could ask for it back, if she decided to look for him at the Vitrax.

Rohka exhaled slowly as she turned to the shopkeeper and shrugged,

“You heard the man. I desire a set o’ dice, please,” she said sweetly, walking past the coins he’d left on the shelf. The door to the shop finally closed behind them.

“Right. Dice,” the old man grumbled something under his breath about relying on an airhead to save him while he picked up the silver pair on the shelf above.

“Sooo…” Rohka droned, swinging the crowbar back and forth by her side as she walked up to the counter. “You okay? Gosh, that seemed rough. What was all that about?”

“Mind yer own business, Miss,” he said, wearily. “So that’ll be four go—“

“I don’t care how much it is, Mister…“
“It’s Tine. Just Tine.”
“Fine. Tine. Oh, you own this place!” She exclaimed, connecting the dots.
He looked at her dead in the eyes as he placed the dice in front of her.
“Nope. I don’t. I’m moving out now, Miss…”
“Rohka. Just Rohka," she mimicked, her voice low, mocking his sullen intonation from earlier. She smiled and went back to speaking casually, "Oi, just take whatever’s there on the shelf, then,” Roh pointed to the back with her crowbar.
Tine looked behind her shoulder at the pile of gold mizas.
“There’s a lot there,” he smirked at her. “You sure you don’t wanna buy anything else?”
“Nah, all I need is this pair o’ dice here, luv.” She grinned at the old man, and then put the crowbar in her shoulder bag before grabbing her new toys. “And a story! Come on, it didn’t seem terrible, what happened?” She pried, unable to give up on gleaning a bit of gossip.

Rohka wasn’t about to go buying more things for no reason, just because the mizas were available. She’d come here with a purpose and she was satisfied. She didn’t want coins as a gift — in Roh’s hands, coins would be earned. Stories, however, were always a steal.

Tine looked at her blankly. “Alright,” he paused, then lowered his gaze. “Look, I’m sorry, I don’t mean to be rude, they just burst in to take this lot outta my hands, and it was absolutely unfair! That Nitrozian woman had an inhumane grip on me — she forced me to sign it! Lady, I’ve done nothing but good for this city, I don’t see how anyone can just come in here and demand things in my establishment! It’s absurd!” His voice had risen multiple octaves and Rohka just nodded, her feigned sympathy too obvious for the shopkeeper to believe. “Right, no, you wouldn’t understand. Listen, just tell people that Tine’s things are gonna be harder to find now, got it? I don’t need rumours about this place closing down, it’s bad for business.”

Rohka nodded again, and offered a parting curtsy. “I got it. I’m sorry for the trouble you’ve gone through today, it clearly seems complicated. I’ll pray for your store at the Temple tomorrow,” she said sincerely, backing away to the door. “Take care, Tine. Thank you!” She opened the door and waved at the frustrated old man who waved back with a forced smile.

So she’s a Nitrozian, eh…? The sibyl pondered the situation that just transpired as she walked in search of a free ravosala. Why did she want Tine’s shop? And with a stryfer for backup, at that. It all seemed to go over her head; she wasn’t sure what to make of it besides knowing that she’d accidentally walked into some shady business deal. Roh replayed the events in her mind to double check if she’d said anything that might get her into trouble. It didn’t seem like she’d said much.

She probably had nothing to worry about.

"You find certain writers who when they write, it makes your own brain voice like a tuning fork, and you just resonate with them… And I sometimes have a hard time understanding how people who don’t have that in their lives make it through the day."
