Burning lungs and colors burning his eyes, Kynier ran, trying to ignore every sensation. Save for the feeling of one foot in front of the other. The night was filled with screams and shouts. Smoke and fire danced in the sky. By Akajia what madness did he cause? Madness that wasn’t even finished. Kynier stopped his running and searched through all the colors for the last marker left to be found. The shadows across the ground were bright yellow and shifted around. Kynier took a step away from them.
“Nightstalker!” the yellow masses hissed in Makath. “Another forty paces to your last spell!” Where their words real? Shadows should not be so bold of color despite how they often spoke so boldly to him. The sight of his breath in the air was pink as he breathed heavily through his mask. Kynier closed his eyes and rubbed at them with his palms. Willing the unusual perception of the world to be banished from his mind. When he opened them again it had not gone, merely changed. The ground was greener than leaves and the shadows red like the fires that burned behind him. With a glance over his shoulder he saw that they weren’t red but violet.
“Nightstalker! Move!” they hissed. Kynier broke himself away from his distractions and put his faith in the children of his goddess. One… two… he counted each step of his long strides until he reached the number they said. Forty. Kynier stopped and didn’t bother to look around. The mage simply took two deep breaths before speaking. “Pedolx.” He took five slow steps and heard flames rush to life with the final one. It was done.
Kynier started running again before the wind betrayed him again. This time he didn’t bother following the path, but went straight and through the silver crops in front of him. Kynier set the golden short sword back in its sheath. With his arms free he batted aside the crops as he moved as quickly as he could towards open terrain. After several chimes he finally burst out of the pulp fields. Kynier stooped low and tried taking long strides while trying to be difficult to see. The fires should had their attention. But there may have been someone whose mental functions were just as hindered as his own. When the burning in his legs were too much to bear, he stopped and looked back. Four great pillars of blood smoke rose into the air as copper flames burning in the night.
He had done it.
Any celebration was short lived. For hundreds of small copper flames floated in the sky away from the fires. Kynier saw ivory things flying through the air over his head. Something was flocking to the fires. Looking up at the strange creatures for several ticks, he finally recognized them for what they were. Parchment Moths. Of all the sensations he could feel, laughter is the one that arose. It felt like a nervous laugh as he watched the insects swarm to their demise. Kynier turned back and started running for the city. Unaware that those moths were carrying the fire further than he intended.
