Seaside Market, 13th Bell----------------

The walk back north to the city was longer than the one taken to the Aquillar Hot Springs. It was not due to the weather. Nor was it caused by fatigue. The spy was taking his time to formulate a strategy in order to accomplish the task that had been bestowed upon him. There was minimal hope in finding the missing Guardian Dragoon alive after he had disappeared eleven days ago. If the man where alive then he was likely on a ship on its way to anywhere else in the world. But in the city of anarchy, such a long disappearance usually meant that the first place he should look was the Dust Beds.

Kynier did not expect to find anything that could provide closure there. Bodies were buried or burned in masses. More than likely, he was going to have to begin his investigation in the one place that was going to be a real challenge. In the Sun’s Refuge district. Recent tensions would not allow him the ability to freely roam inside. Yet that was where any trails would begin. Skirting the perimeter and asking Dragoons questions at random was a tactic that had proven to fail far more than it succeeded. And such a method could take him days to perform before getting lucky enough to find someone with relevant knowledge.

So, a disguise was going to be needed. But what did he need in order to impersonate a Dragoon? The wealthier members of the gang tended to wear more opulent clothing and armor. For several chimes Kynier thought on that as he made his way through the Slaver’s Row district. Purposefully, he avoided the main market of the place, not wanting to do something rash, Kynier avoided the temptation all together. The newer members did not look too different from the general populace. It would be easier to impersonate being a newer initiate. Except… all members had the back of their hand branded with the gang’s insignia. How was he going to deal with that?

He still had the longsword with the Sun’s Birth sunburst engraved in the pommel. That would probably assist in selling the outfit he managed to come up with. What he was going to need that he did not have currently was armor. The militant organization was almost always wearing armor. So, Kynier wove his way through the despicable district of slaver markets to the Seaside Market district. There, he asked around about armor and where the best armors were for sale. From multiple people he heard the same establishment’s name. The Knight’s Armory. But that it had a reputation for selling well used materials as new. But if someone were able to place a custom order, their work was very good.

To scrap together that information had taken him a few bells. Kynier contemplated his options. There were a few stalls with armor pieces he could utilize. If the Knight’s Armory was known for selling questionable goods as new, it may not be worthwhile. Still, it would not do any harm to at least go and look. But before Kynier did, he stopped by one of the stalls in the market with a small assortment of armor. The woman running the stall was well toned with muscle and had a few scars visible across her arms and face. Someone that looked like they would know and appreciate some good armor.

“Watcha lookin’ fer?” she asked when her attention finally fell on him. She spoke with a lilt and had skin that made her look Myrian.

“Supplemental protection.” The woman’s gaze ran up and down his body. Noting the weapons and the lack of any sort of armor. She stepped around the stall and grabbed the rim of his cloak to open it up and look at him more. Kynier tensed but did not make any sort of movements. The woman looked up at him curiously.

“How much protectin’ are ye wantin’? Some wanna armor up like a turtle, but I’d a guess ye wanna be light.” Kynier nodded.

“I don’t want to feel weighed down and lose my agility.” The woman took a measuring rope and started setting it along his body. First, she took note of his forearms, followed by his upper arms and shins. She was quiet as she walked around him and worked around his cloak. While the rain did not seem to bother her, she seemed considerate about keeping her clients dry.

“Leathers are light, but they are ‘one an’ done’. Can’t stop too many blades before deir useless. Steel’s a bit heavier an’ would last much longer.” When she was done, she returned to her stall and began sorting through several of her wares. She pulled out several pairs of things. Some were leather and others were steel with leather padding. “These are vambraces,” she said indicating a leather pair, “Dey cover ye forearms while these,” she pointed at a steel pair that looked similar but larger, “are rerebraces and cover yer upper arms. Try ‘em. See if ye like.”

Kynier took a leather vambrace and strapped it to his right arm. Lacing the straps through the buckles so that it fit snuggly and did not wiggle and slide. It was really light, but Kynier did not feel as though he were better protected. Subconsciously, he fingered the scar on his left forearm he had gotten from last spring. Could the leather be strong enough to prevent another? He didn’t feel so sure that it could. “Do you have a pair that are steel?” The woman seemed to smile as she went back to her wares in search of what he wanted. Kynier undid the vambrace and set it down as she held out the next pair.

The steel was heavier, though not by much. When he strapped it on it felt like a better fit than the leathers. Kynier took the second vambrace and strapped in on as well. He held out both his arms to sense the additional weight. While it was there it seemed negligible. Kynier gave a small nod of approval. “The steel vambraces feel much better.” The vendor smiled.

“Most men say that,” she mused. Without word, she took the steel rerebraces and started strapping them on to his upper arms. The steel plating covered the inside and outside of the arm just like the vambraces but felt tighter. When she was done, Kynier looked down the length of his arms. Wet steel covered his arms and gave him a bulkier appearance. Again, he nodded his approval.

“This works very well. Do you have anything similar for the legs?”

Even though he did not know how much the vambraces and rerebraces were going to cost, Kynier was pretty well sold on them. Funding was not a problem. At least he didn’t think it was going to be. He never browsed armor merchandise before and had no ability to estimate how expensive it was actually going to be. For his immediate purposes he was going to need more as well. But as he ran his fingers over the steel plates around his arms, Kynier was wondering if he should wear armor on a more regular basis. If he were to do that, he wasn’t sure if he would select the steel protection after all. As a Nightstalker, he relied on stealth quite a bit. Reflective surfaces could cause more problems and force him into more situations where the protection was going to be needed.

“There are things fer legs. It will depend. Some are better fer yer loins than fer legs. There’s a cuisses which does hinder yer ability to move a little.” She indicated his waist and then just above his knee. “That’s how much it would protect.” With her foot she tapped his shin gently. “Greaves are like vambraces fer yer legs.” Kynier looked at his legs critically as he considered the vendor’s description. “I have some in both leather and steel. Though they may not fit yer too well. With yer measurements I could get them formed to yer body well enough.”

“I’d like to see the steel versions.” Again, she smiled as she returned to her stock. The cuisses and greaves did in fact look like oversized renditions of the vambrace and rerebrace. And as strange as it was to have a woman he didn’t know strap them around his legs, Kynier appreciated the assistance. The vendor showed him how the cuisses were to wrap around his legs to prevent chaffing as well as to avoid having the metal plates scrape against each other as he walked. The greaves themselves were the sort that did not offer protection to the knee, but they did wrap around to cover the shins as well as the sides of this calves.

When the vendor was done, she took a step back. “Do a small walk. See how they feel.” Kynier did so in small circles. While there was a noticeable addition to his weight, the steel plates themselves did not obstruct his gait. And while they were not a perfect fit they were not uncomfortable either. Kynier stopped and squatted down until his rump nearly touched the ground. Then he stood back up and pulled a knee up towards his chest. There was some restriction to his flexibility, but not enough to prevent some of the advanced acrobatics he had been working up to. “So, what do yer think?” the vendor asked.

Kynier eyes her with a smile. “I think I’d like to know how much the cost.” It was an admission of approval, but it did not reveal how much he actually liked the equipment. There was still a chest piece left to get as well too. But he wanted to see how much this was going to be first.

“Both the vambraces and the rerebraces go fer seventy gold miza each. The cuisses and the greaves are eighty gold miza a piece as well. I could get adjustments as well fer ye so they are better fitted fer yer body. That would be a hundred and seventy-five gold mizas per piece if ye wanted that done.” Kynier’s eyes widened a bit. Just to have them fitted to his body was going to be… what… Kynier looked at his arms and legs. Two pairs per pair of limbs. One fifty… three… Seven hundred gold mizas just to have them fitted? And then there was the cost of the armor itself to consider.

“Hmm,” he gave thoughtfully. There was no need to have them fitted now. That could always be done later. After wearing them for a while, it was possible he would be less enchanted with the idea of wearing armor. Still, three hundred gold mizas for just the armor. Haggling did not feel like one of Kynier’s strong suits, but this was a rather large amount he was going to spend. Seaside Market vendors tended to charge higher more than a fair bargain anyway. “Thirty-five each for the vambraces and rererbraces, as well as forty for the cuisses and greaves.”

The vendor scoffed in disgust. “Ye’d have better luck if ye tried to steal them,” she said bitterly. Kynier arched an eyebrow. It was a tempting notion considering he was already wearing the armor. But he wanted to avoid attention as a general rule for living in Sunberth. “Sixty and seventy,” she countered. Kynier moved closer to the vendor’s stall to stand by a clear spot on her counter. The woman looked excited as Kynier reached into this pack and started pulling out the coin. He set two hundred and twenty gold mizas on the counter. The woman must have been counting along because she scowled when he did not draw anymore out.

“Fifty for the vambraces and rerebraces. Sixty for the greaves and cuisses. And I’ll be inquiring about a chest piece as well.” Kynier shifted his feet a little for her to have a clear look at the stack of gold coins. Kynier could see that she wanted to ask for more. But the money was right there, waiting to be taken. After a moment she consented and started to gather the coins rather protectively.

After the vendor had stashed the coins of her sale away, she stood up again with a pleased smile. She leaned on the counter of her stall as she looked Kynier’s form over once more. “Ye said ye wanted to remain light. So, steel’s not the likely choice of a harness for ye. Leather ‘d be simple enough and effective. Unlike the piecemail, it tends to be thicker to guard yer better. The other option would be a shirt o’ chain. That only goes over yer chest and allows yer arms and legs more mobility.

Thinking it over though, the chain shirt was louder. It would clink and rattle at times when he did not want it to. Leather, while provided more than he intended to get, seemed the more practical option. A chain shirt was not something Kynier saw himself wearing beyond the next few days. “The leather armor would be just fine. How much does it cost?” The vendor set her eyes over some of her stock.

“If ye want the leather there are a few varieties to it. Standard or studded leathers.” Kynier inquired as to what the difference was between them. “Studded is not as firm but looser. The studs keep it pieced together by acting as rivets. Standard is less flexible but boiled for longer so that it is more resistant to penetration.” Kynier gave his armored limbs a glance. Having so much metal on his body was already enough. He did not think that it would rest well on the… rivets?... of the studded leather. While the loss of flexibility was regrettable, it was the wiser option.

“The standard would be the preference. So, how much is a set of that?”

“The standard leather will be fifteen gold mizas.” Kynier reached into his pack again and withdrew ten. While this time he wasn’t wearing the armor, setting the offer down seemed like an effective strategy. The vendor eyes the coins and sneered at him. His expression remained neutral for she had not made an outright refusal yet. Then she gave a small huff through her nose and took the coins anyway. Kynier smirked slightly as the woman retrieved a set of leather armor from her stock. Taking the last piece of armor he intended to get that evening, Kynier stowed it into his pack.

“I also have a good selection of helms available. Great helms, nasal, and leather strapped too.” Kynier smiled and shook his head. What he had was already more than enough. And he had the feeling that a helmet would not really provide the benefit he’d expect it to. There had been plenty of experiences where he had been clubbed in the head. Just because you weren’t cut or stabbed did not mean that the injury wasn’t life threatening. He gave his thanks as he wandered through the Seaside Markets towards the north. There was still plenty of bells left before Syna went to rest and the city grew dark and cold. He made his way to the Dust Bed to inquire about the recent dead.
