8th Fall 521 AV – Ruby’s Scarlet Sanctum Alric had managed to find some vestiges of luck this season and had somehow managed to find employment as guard, or bouncer largely, for one of the finest establishments in the whole of Sunberth. Not normally one to worry about the way he looked he found himself feeling slightly out of place as he stood by the large doorway into the Scarlet Sanctum in his drab clothing. The associates that were plying their wares on the exterior of the building were nice enough to him, given that he was there for them really, though he had seen more than one set of rolled eyes and had to overlook more than a few cutting remarks Ruby seemed okay with both situations, for now at least. He had been told that after his first set of wages he was expected to upgrade his wardrobe so as to be more in keeping with the establishment. That was, of course, should he last that long. The last one that he was replacing had been terminated by a dagger to the gut by a rather upset patron. The patron didn’t fare much better afterwards but Alric had taken the warning very seriously. He kept his eyes open and watched those that approached the door with a level of suspicion. “Evening lads,” one of the more nicely dressed men said as he approached them, “some beauties out tonight eh? Don’t remember seeing you before though” he finished, looking at Alric. “New lad, first season. Don’t worry he’ll look the part next season sir” “Ah, we all started somewhere. More fun for you then…” “Alric” “Alric! Yes…first season is always the most fun I’ve been told. Got to have that first lay sometime and here’s the place to do it” he said, waiting for the inevitable red to burn Alric’s cheeks, though he remained silent. “Hah! A stoic one! Might just survive after all Garth” the man laughed and went through the doors. Alric made no attempt to stop him, the man clearly knew Garth – his partner on the doors – and besides which his tight outfit had left little in the way of places to conceal anything dangerous. His eyes scanned at crowds and didn’t see any apparent dangers, there was much laughter and revelry but nothing sinister to his eyes. Garth seemed to agree though they both stood up a little taller as a rough looking sort, ragged clothes and clearly stumbling around, made his way to the door. “No no old timer, not tonight” Alric said gently, holding up his hands palm forwards. “Whaddyu-yu mean? Man’s got needs!” “And those needs are sleep and something awful to eat in the morning. No entry to those who either can’t pay or-“ “I can pay! Look look!” “Can’t pay or can’t get in without being able to walk in a straight line,” he said, putting his arm around the man as if they were old friends and turning him around, away from the door, “you know the rules. You are a frequent visitor yes? Yes you look like quite the seasoned veteran” “I knows all the girls!” “And I’m sure they know you. Now what do you think they’d want for an old friend eh? You falling over in there, and getting in trouble? No…no tonight is for sleeping yes?” There was a few more chimes of back and forth but it remained reasonably warm in conversation and at the end he had sent the man on his way. Returning to Garth he raised an eyebrow. |
