Known as the Celestial Seat, Nyka is a religious city in Northern Sylira. Ruled by four demigods and traversed by a large crevice, the monk-city is both mystical and dangerous. [Lore]

40th Winter 511AV

The messengers came. The six Konti sent from the White Isle itself. Moving as one group they had been informed of the dangers of this place well. Clearly visible each woman carried a suvai at her side; the almost legendary Konti weapon. They were here however to deliver a message of great gravity and importance. One they were to give by hand to whomever was in charge of this place…Sealed in an Isurian Steel scroll case with the mark of V’nessi herself. The lead messenger and seer of this group spoke directly to the guard monk at the gate the moment they met eyes.

“We are to be escorted immediately to whomever rules this city, singular or plural we must meet with them immediately. We carry news from V’nessi champion of Avalis that carries great gravity for this city and all of the realm.” She wasn’t really requesting, no mistaking those words for a simple request would be a foolish…she was telling him that they would be escorted and would meet with the powers at be.

There really wasn’t anything else to do honestly. The woman had made her request and would not leave nor let up on the man until taken or at the very least pointed in the direction of where she needed to go. The escort would merely be a nice formality that the women would appreciate while within the city confines. But they could travel on their own if need be…they just preferred not to. Especially in a city as unfamiliar to them as Nyka. But they would do what they needed to in order to deliver the message they carried. It was essential that the city be warned and take the preparations needed for the oncoming hard times that would settle on them.

The Seers [Liar]

The guard frowned, and the scar on his face rippled with menace. But as monks peered at the peculiar women from all angles, curious superstition on their hardened faces, the aurist beside him touched his elbow with more tender solemnity than either had known in too long.

“Very well,” the guard said. “An escort you shall have.”

Four monks and six foreigners moved urgently through the streets like a bad omen manifest, a grave white procession cheered by suspicious whispers and glaring eyes. They stared until they could no longer, training their warding gestures on the women’s strange appearance, their elegant weapons, the scroll that swayed at their leader’s hip. The hush followed them across an otherwise empty bridge and through the grand city center known as the Celestial Square.

They lead the women briskly through the widening streets and under the shadow of the tallest building in the city, the home of the four Celestials themselves. There was a lesser building nestled in the crook of one of its corners; the guard that had spoken opened the great red doors of the Palace of the Supplicants and lead them to the sick old man at the room’s end, ignoring the starving beggars and patient petitioners and hopeful citizens that lined the hall’s floor. They exchanged a few mumbles, and then Ricard Landre turned to messengers.

“Your request will be submitted. You will wait with the rest of them.”

Few approached them. Even those who did not fear their appearance did fear the symbolism of their escort; that so many monks lurked beside these foreigners meant either that they were not to be disturbed, or they were too dangerous to be neared.

The Alvina were kinder than their people. They knew the signs of import, heeded their servant’s description. V’nessi’s messengers were invited to the Celestial Palace next, much to the disappointment of the masses as they were forced to wait even longer. The monks ushered the Konti into the chamber and closed the door behind them, leaving them in the company of the ruling body of Nyka: the Celestials.

The Seers [Liar]

40th Winter 511AV

They were glad for the escort if nothing else. The eying from the guards at the gate irritated the lead messenger a little. But such was the atmosphere of the city, one had to be careful who they let in and why. But these six Konti had a real reason for being here. One that would be revealed first to the ruling body, then radiated outwards from there. Maybe…well what leadership would keep the people in the dark about an event as horrible as this one? Sometimes leadership was interesting like this. All these women were charged with doing was bringing the news to Nyka and staying if the leadership desired it. Anything that happened after the message was delivered was purely up to the council itself.

As the women were escorted it became apparent that their help would indeed be needed more than they thought. This city was protected from the outside; but not from the pure destruction that would come raining down on them from the sky itself. The message from V’nessi was clear, destruction was imminent. The storm was coming; nothing would ever be able to stop it from cutting its path across the lands. Nothing mortal or immortal could halt what was to come. But they could deliver a message and help ease the pain afterward. One thing was for sure though. The people would need healing afterward; there would be no city above ground left untouched afterward.

The women were ushered into the main chamber and the seer immediately stepped forward. “I have for you a message from V’nessi, champion of Avalis its contents for you only.” The Konti would step forward and present the sealed Isuran steel scroll case to whomever would take it.

Once opened there were three pieces of paper in the scrollcase. The first was a general accounting of V’nessi’s overall vision. Of the impending storm to come.

Storms ripping apart the lands transforming it into shadows of what it once was. Poisoning fields, killing everything that lives and transforming all that survives the onslaught. The land will go infertile unable to bear any fruits or support any life. Vibrant colors illuminating the sky, blinding those that look at it. Buildings crumble into the sea and the pawn becomes a king. The Kings will change the lands forever and the caged beast rattles his cage. The bars are near breaking. The storm ventures on nothing can stand in its path, nothing can stop it. For it is divine it its creation. It will start in the mountains, Windreach.

The next was a very accurate and very vivid account of some of the things that would happen to the city. Damage to buildings, disappearances of people vanishing into the void itself, appearance of horrible monsters that have never been seen before, bridges crumbling…the accounts were quite exact. Eerily concise actually.

The third scroll was an appeal to the Celestials.

As you read this message the time of the storm gets closer. It will happen the very moment winter dies. You will need to stand more united than ever in order to minimize the damage to your great city. Monsters of the likes that have never been seen will roam your streets spilling blood…especially at night. Citizens will vanish without a trace and chaos will try and take over. But if you stand together you will stand strong as one. Your people need you more than ever. I put under your charge this Konti as an adviser for what I have predicted and five Konti healers to help with the aftermath. Each of them is highly skilled and will be invaluable to you if you choose to use them. Keep my daughters and granddaughters safe.

The Seers [Liar]

Postby Liar on February 27th, 2012, 2:40 am

The audience hushed when they watched the women enter. Each of them had heard the Celestials’ decision to postpone the proceedings for the sake of these strangers, and each wondered what could news could possibly be so important from outside the city. As the messengers reached the center of the great hall, it began to resonate with the itching whispers of speculation and suspicion. The faces of the four Alvina looked down from tall thrones at each side of the square room. They were the size of humans, and yet somehow larger; the minds behind their eyes knew so many things, and so little.

“Here,” Skerr offered, and there was a smile in her voice. She read each message as it was presented to her, then passed it to a runner, who delivered it to the next. The ceremony continued in much the same silence, rolling with the low murmur of impatient observers, until each of the four knew the contents of each message. Moving sunwise, they ended with Laat, who read them to the populace with a businessman’s diction.

Exclamations rose like thunder from the commons, falling in on the messengers with fear and disbelief, accusations and suggestions and hatred. As the rabble roused, their leaders remained silent for a time. There was no link shared between them save the association of generations, and yet the glances they exchanged were a discussion. They knew what it meant, the power that would be unleashed by these storms, the chaos that would rise from their exposure to the Heart of the World. They acknowledged the potential in it, and knew it was not theirs to seize.

“Silence!” Uphis bellowed.

“Precautions will be taken,” Laat lisped, even before the echoes of his fellow had wholly dissipated. His words were quick, and he was visibly weary of the level of alarm displayed by his people. “I propose that on the night of Winter’s final day, all will remain indoors, accounted for, and out of the shadows, of course. Shops should be closed, and the streets patrolled as they would be at night.”

“We have faced these dangers before,” Xannos observed, waving a dismissive hand. “We are well prepared to do so again.”

“Agreed,” said the Blades Alvina, unafraid and impatient. “All forces will be directed towards the monsters which would spill our city’s blood, as the Seer would have us believe. To each his own Quarter, as if it were night.”

Skerr lifted a hand and urged softly, “We must unite against this prophecy. We cannot control the promise of an attack separately. I will focus my forces on the Aperture, as well as the Gates and the Docks, with your leave.”

Uphis shrugged. “I will command your forces, if you will give them to me. You should focus on your fields, and the tolls the land will pay.”

“I did not mean to say—”

“Your farmers have been given ample time to prepare,” Laat interjected, stilling the tension if only for a moment. “Harvest early, stock well, waste no seed. Cast your Season’s blessing a day late.”

“That I will,” Skerr declared, clearly furious.

“The aftermath is more controllable than the onslaught.” Xannos sang, diverting the flow of conversation to more important matters. “If we cannot prevent the city from falling, we can prepare to rebuild. If our hard work must be ruined, we will rise up with even greater structures. We will defeat the storms of destruction in spirit, as well as blood.”

“That is all very well, but what of our people? We cannot hope to rebuild them. The Infirmary will be busy, on Winter-Two. What of the healers they have sent?”

“I will keep them.” Skerr answered.

“And I.” Xannos said.

Ever the diplomat, Laat suggested, “They have offered five. One for each quarter and one for the Square.” He glanced at Uphis.

“Very well,” he spat. “It is decided. You may leave.”

The four of them fidgeted as the hall held its breath. The Konti were allowed to say their piece, if they so desired, and then were escorted briskly away, to be tucked out of sight and out of mind. Eyes followed them just as they had before, without the awe or gratitude they deserved. There was only the same distrust, the old distaste. Their message would fade by fifty days’ end, but the truth of it would not. And Nyka would be ready, even if her people were not.
