Well there's major differences. Nuits were born as living creatures with naturally formed souls. Automatons have artificially created souls, but those souls are copied from real ones. Yet since an Automaton does HAVE a soul, one could argue that they're alive and thus count as a species.
I'd argue that if Automatons are a species and Nuits are a species, they're 'related' species, like comparing lions, tigers, panthers, and housecats. Many differences but multiple similarities as well.
What's the difference between a Nuit and a free willed sentient Golem programmed into a fleshy body? An advanced enough Golem can develop a sense of self ala "I think therefore I am," and thus could be seen as just as alive as a Nuit.
