2, Fall 512

Torsten had gotten up a little earlier than usual, due mostly to nerves. he had washed his face in some frigid water, partly to clean up and partly to wash the last of the sleep from his eyes. after cleaning up and getting dressed, he set his tools in his pack and picked it up to go to his first interview.

Torsten had arrived a few chimes early for the interview. unsure of where to go, he looked around hoping to catch sight of Gensen... Lor'eno... anyone really; He just wanted someone who knew where he was supposed to be. his eyes were a tummult of color: red with excitement, yellow with apprehension, and blue with anxiety and many hues in between these. double checking he made sure his tools were still in his bag, he would hate to lose his parents gift without even getting to put them to work. he was eager to prove he could be of use to the hold and, eventually, the whole of the city of Avanthal.

Lor’eno stood outside the entrance of the icestone mines, welcoming the miners in for another day below the surface of Avanthal. The mines were located not far from Iceglaze Hold and near the front doors he could see a boy standing around, looking in various directions, clearly unsure of what he was doing. Lor’eno ignored him for a while, certain that he would figure out whatever it was he was doing. But a few chimes passed and still the boy stood there. Eventually Lor’eno determined the boy needed some help. With a sigh he stretched his legs and walked over to where Torsten was waiting.

“You seem lost, lad. Do you need help with something?” Lor’eno asked quietly. He was a soft spoken man of few words and usually got right to the point. This instance would be no different. Though his words were few and quick there was a pleasant smile on his lips and a calm blue in his eyes.

torsten flinched and shook his head, embarassed he hadn't noticed Lor'eno standing there the whole time.
"y-yes," he replied "i'm looking for a job sculpting icestone. i heard that i needed to come to the mines and apply with you."
after the initial shock, Torsten looked visibly relieved that it was Lor'eno who had noticed him and he relaxed his body, unintentionally tensing up earlier.
"I know I'm not the best, but whenever I could I used to practice on some of the larger, rough cut fragments left in the workrooms after my father finished working."
Torsten readjusted his pack, trying to relieve some of the nervous energy.
"would you like me to show you my skill?"

Lor’eno looked over Torsten before he replied. The man before him was rather young, hardly more then a boy, and though his general shape indicated that he had some muscle it probably wasn’t as developed as the miners. But then again, none of them started out terribly strong. Years of mining, hauling, and processing icestone was enough to fill out the frame of any hardy Vantha. This boy would be no different, certainly.

“Well, I’m always looking for more workers to process the raw icestone into nice blocks. No need to show off your skill, I’ll see it soon enough. Until you’ve proven yourself all your work will be quality checked anyways. Can’t send off icestone for buildings if we are unsure of the quality. Important work y’know.” Lor’eno said quietly. Of course he wouldn’t say that he was terribly desparate for workers ever since the icestone mine collapsed from the heat wave after the djed storm. Many of his workers had been killed, a tragedy for all of Iceglaze.

“You’re an Iceglaze boy, right? I think I remember seeing you about but it gets harder and harder to remember the younger ones.” Lor’eno smiled jovially. He spent so much of his time in the mines he hardly ever got a chance to know the younger boys until they came looking for work.

Torsten's face lit up.
"oh! Yeah, I'm Torsten Iceglaze. I'm sorry for the improper greeting, I guess I let my nerves get the better of me
Torsten felt more at ease talking to Lor'eno, he wasn't nearly as scary as Torsten had made him up to be. and not nearly as loud as some of the miners he had seen!
Is there anything else you wanted to know foreman?"
Torsten asked, trying to be polite.
