Cliches Born From Conformity

There's been a lot of talk around the site about cliched characters. Players who join the site and feel the need to have something utterly unusual or deranged about their character. Mental illnesses, strange markings, powers no one else possesses. Many (I know Gossamer has discussed it) have begged the question - why don't people just pick a normal character? And in a sense, I totally agree. It's frustrating when you get outlandish PMs from new players asking if they can play a God, or if their character can suck blood and live nocturnally.

But, there is another side to it too, especially those creating characters with some sort of mental issue or psychosis. Cliches are born from conformity. So many people pick the "different" concept that it becomes over saturated, and thus a cliche. So how long will it take before the average joe character concept becomes a cliche in itself? Do new players arriving at the site see the "normal character" as a cliche and try to turn to something different? There's a bit of a paradox here, and I think it's an interesting thing to think about.

What makes a cliche, and what could become a cliche in future? Are the character traits and designs we label truly cliches?

Patience in Zeltiva

Second issue of the day... patience is a virtue, guys.

When you choose to play in a busy city, that you have clearly chosen because there are lots of players there, do NOT whine or complain about waiting times on gradings and mod posts. It is totally self inflicted. You made the city busier by choosing to come to it, and so the trade off is slower mod response on things, and the need for patience.

If you hate it so much, please leave. It will make Zeltiva better for everyone if it gets a little quieter. Now, this isn't a complaint that it's busy. I totally love seeing my city bustling. Instead, it's a complaint at those moaning about grading queues and such like.

Once again, you CHOSE to come to Zeltiva. Your choice added to the city's busyness even more. Echelon, Arcane, and I have busy lives off site too. We do this totally voluntarily because we enjoy it.

Remember that guys. Next time you go to moan, perhaps consider exiting the city instead. We have so many fun new things heading to Zeltiva, and I don't like it being tarnished by players making unfounded complaints about the city.

Cliche is defined by individuals. Just because one reader has read a million books about characters with amnesia does not mean the same concept is cliche to a reader who has not.

Really cliche means bored. New players don't find certain concepts boring because they are just that, new, they haven't had time to get sick of certain quirks that they ask for. Especially our younger members.

I do not believe that "normal" character will become cliche, though, because even within the normal sphere immense variation is possible. I believe what people truly with new players would avoid is blaring character defining quirks. They want you to start as a well rounded character with a tame personality and then grow into a defined character over time as you get your baring on the site.

Anyone who does this will know, and understand, that blood sucking nocturnals don't really have a place on Mizahar. Or, that we have certain mental diseases coming out of the woodwork around here.

Seriously though, papa, my grades have been in the queue for like EVER! Come on!
