Huzak nodded quickly as Svasra introduced herself and explained what she wanted. Barmaids were always in short supply around the Red Diamond. Most girls who took the jobs just needed something to do until they discovered a better job more suited to their interests or left because they couldn’t take it when the patrons got drunk and a little handsy.
“The position is still available but I gotta warn you, it’s hard work. The bartender will pour the drinks but you’ve got to deliver them as fast as you can and it can be a real jungle out there when it gets really busy. Sometimes the patrons drink a little much and touch people when they shouldn’t. You gotta find a firm line between not taking it personally and not taking their guff. Also, sometimes you see things in taverns and bars that most people wouldn’t want their family to know about. So you have to be discreet. I don’t like the staff blackmailing patrons.” Huzak said, explaining the main points of the job quickly.
“And cleaning, cleaning is your biggest job. It’s almost impossible to do when it’s busy but once people start to clear out we clean like mad to make the place decent for the next night’s rush. And you have to have a strong stomach for some of the stuff we clean up. It’s usually not too bad but there are always those rare occasions that pop up.” Huzak took a deep breath as she finished explaining.
“So, do you think you can handle the work?” Huzak asked Svasra with a long look up and down to judge if the girl had the strength to do the job.

Huzak spoke in a direct and firm matter, in which Svasra listened with her head slightly tilted. The woman nodded at one point or another, though the job description seemed to go on for some time. Cleaning, keeping hands away, and most importantly, delivering the drinks quickly. Svasra knew this though, the Red Diamond was often like a second home with the amount of times she seemed to integrate herself into its messy society. She watched the people run around with their heads cut off, girls snap at drunk men, and fights break out. Did she want to get into the heart of it though? “So, do you think you can handle the work?”
She thought about it for a moment, running over the list. Svasra smiled, though, and nodded her head. "I do believe I can handle that," she said in a confident tone as she looked over the bar absently. "I'm sure you'll tell me if I'm not sorted for the job soon enough," she added with a slight chuckle. |

Huzak let out a bark of laughter after Svasra finished speaking. She liked the girl’s attitude and was pleased by her direct manner. She had a feeling Svasra would do well in the Red Diamond.
“Well you are certainly right about that, I will let you know soon enough. Well, it’s a mite bit too busy to start you right now but why don’t you come in tomorrow early in the afternoon? We don’t get too busy until an hour or two before dinner so that will give you some time to get used to the place and learn a thing or two about where things are back here.” Huzak said as she looked out over the crowd of patron with a small grimace. She didn’t want to throw the girl into the thick of it without any experience.
“Oh, and the pay is two gold mizas a day. Not much, but it will get you by as young as you are. No extra mouths to feed and all that. I’ve got to get back to work, I’ll see you later Svasra.” Huzak waved slightly and turned back to the mass around the bar, shouting for drinks.
The bartender looked at Svasra and grinned. He liked when new girls came to work at the Red Diamond. The older ones got a little too jaded to put up with his teasing banter.
“We’ll see you tomorrow then, right? Huzak is gruff but she’s fair. I think she likes you. I’m sure you’ll have lots of interesting times here, we all do!” the bartender’s cheeky grin widened and he chuckled lightly.

We don’t get too busy until an hour or two before dinner so that will give you some time to get used to the place and learn a thing or two about where things are back here," Huzak said as she'd let out a short laugh to Svasra's comment. "Oh, and the pay is two gold mizas a day. Not much, but it will get you by as young as you are. No extra mouths to feed and all that. I’ve got to get back to work, I’ll see you later Svasra." With that the woman turned and went straight back to the patrons surrounding the bar, which Svasra watched with a careful eye. She handled them well, and seemed within her element as she handed out the drinks quickly.
Svasra looked back to the younger bartender who grinned and said, "We’ll see you tomorrow then, right? Huzak is gruff but she’s fair. I think she likes you. I’m sure you’ll have lots of interesting times here, we all do!" "You definitely will see me tomorrow," Svasra said with a nod, and a returning smile. "I cannot wait to get started." Nodding her head in farewell to the bartender, Svasra waved and weaseled her out of the Tavern homewards.
She breathed out a quiet sigh of relief outside of the Tavern, and shivered with slight anticipation. A barmaid at the Diamond! It was definitely going to be an interesting day now with her shifts at work. Smiling up at the Lights of Morwen, Svasra walked home with a relaxed and content stride. |
