A surreal cavern city inhabited by Symenestra where stones glow and streets are reams of silk. Cocoon like structures hang between stalactites and cascade over limestone flows in organic and eerie arabesques. Without a Symenestra willing to escort you, entrance is impossible.

55th of Autumn, 510AV

Sosicly was meant to be celebrating her finishing of school, her web was going to have a small dinner and then give thanks to Viratas before helping her decide where to go apply her skills. There were many things she was ready to try but instead she was squirming in her seat, swinging her legs and anxiously clutching at her book. The ink and quill lay ignored on the bed beside her as she waited for her checkup. Checkups had been few and far in-between, she had been very careful as to not ruin her little celebration. In her excitement she had nearly forgotten but now that school was out and she would not have to go back she itched to do a million things at once.

Standing she paced about the room now, breathing deeply, a common exercise to self-check her breathing. There was the usual pain when she tried to pull in too much air and a small wheeze but nothing that made her feel ill.

“It’ll be done soon, Bittaly. Stop fidgeting.”

The Symenestra shook her head and made a slashing motion, she was not and Bitta anymore, she had finished school! And she wasn’t so tiny anymore. Her mother only stared back at her daughter until Sosicly slid back into her chair.

“The privilege of a mother is to call you, Bittaly for the rest of your life.”

Sosicly scrunched up her face a bit but there was no real ire, she was pleased her mother still doted on her and she was much too excited to go eat. Her brother would get her favorites. Her legs began to swing once more and feeling secure that her daughter would not try to flee the room her mother exited to go wait in the waiting room.

Check Up (Veldrys)

Postby Veldrys on February 18th, 2013, 9:52 am

Outside the sun was probably shining, and the leaves of the trees would change from green to red, golden and orange, but here, in Kalinor, things always stayed the same. There was no spring, no summer, no autumn, no fall. The temperature never really rose or fell. There was no night, no day. The city was always shrouded in darkness. It existed apart from the rest of the world.

As he sat there, in his Purging during one of his few breaks, Veldrys couldn’t help but wonder what Lhavit was like during this time of the year, whether the mountaintops were already covered with snow. In Lhavit he had known a kind of freedom that seemed impossible here, despite the constant racism.

He enjoyed his work at the Purging, and he didn’t mind treating the surrogates even though his had always been a more Esternian view. At least he was able to comfort them a little during their last days. But Kalinor was too small. Everybody knew everybody else. It was impossible to be left alone.

„Doctor, there is a patient for you“, a nurse interrupted his thoughts as she entered the room. „A young woman.“ Veldrys nodded, rose from his chair and put the cup of fruit juice he had slowly been sipping from away. „Tell her I’ll see her right away. I just need to gather my things.“ If nothing else, this patient would distract him from his thoughts that seemed to become more and more melancholic recently.

But a few chimes later Veldrys entered the room where Sosicly was waiting. She would notice that he was young, just out of his teens, a thin man with silver hair and amethyst eyes that was more pretty than handsome. He was dressed in a white robe. As his gaze fell on Sosicly, he smiled gently.

„I’m Veldrys“, he introduced himself. „Could you tell me what’s wrong? I’m afraid that the nurse failed to inform me.“

OOC :
Truly sorry about the delay, vacation, life and lack of internet and a smidge of being lazy and mojo for writing going bye-bye left me without any chance to write. Hopefully, you’re still up for the thread!

For a moment she thought it was the nurse again, informing her that the doctor would be in shortly but instead of a woman there was a young doctor, strangely enough Sosicly couldn’t remember having seen this particular young man before and realized with dissatisfaction that her mother had her notebook. Another look told her he was young, maybe even close to her age or one of her elder brothers which surprised her a little.

Her mouth opened as if to answer for a moment before pointed to her chest, pretended to cough then pointed to herself as a whole and waved in a form of introduction or maybe telling him to just do a general overview. A thought struck her that had her pausing and mimed writing at the doctor curiously while gesturing to him, maybe he had something she could write with. But then she shook her head and made to stand up to get the nurse, irritation rising a bit, because the nurse should have told him and she hated explaining what she couldn’t even say.

Standing, she breathed in and out deeply again, a small wheeze coming out which she made her point at herself wildly and then gestured to the doctor then to her chest again, wincing when she pricked herself with her own nail. Stopping for a moment Sosicly went back to sit and offered Veldrys an awkward smile while rubbing the red spot blooming on her collar, maybe the doctor would just go get the nurse.

Check Up (Veldrys)

Postby Veldrys on April 12th, 2013, 7:52 pm

As he waited for the girl to explain what ailed her, Veldrys studied her. She was maybe a little younger than he was and much shorter, with red eyes and black hair. There didn’t seem to be anything obviously wrong with her – she didn’t have any wounds, any broken bones. She didn’t look as if she were running a fever. Whatever she had, seemed to be mostly internal and not particularly threatening. But why didn’t she describe her problems?

Was she waiting for him to say something? Did she want him to examine her, without telling him what he was supposed to look for? She opened her mouth, but no sound came out, and Veldrys tilted his head a little to the side and looked at her questioningly.

„You are …“ he began and then paused and reconsidered what he had been about to say. No, she didn’t appear to be deaf. She had clearly understood him. „… mute“, he concluded. „Do you want me to give you something to write on? I have a quill and some paper right here somewhere …“

He didn’t understand what she wanted to tell him by getting up – he had no idea that she wanted him to get the nurse – but he knew very well what she meant when she gestured towards her chest. „Your lungs are bothering you, aren’t they?“ He quickly retrieved the quill and paper he usually used to take notes about his patients and handed them to her.

„May I examine you and listen to your breathing?“ he then asked.

The girl smiled brightly if not stiffly at the young doctor before nodding in thanks for the quill and parchment and setting to write. As she wrote she glanced up at Veldrys in-between every few words, the only sound for a chime or two being the steady scratch of paper. When she finished her hand hesitated, hovering as if to cross out words before she gave a subtle shrug and slip the paper over to him.

I am Sosicly. Thank you for seeing me today, Krova. My lungs aren’t bothering me today but lately they have burned a bit. You look very young for a doctor?

Counting the ticks in her head as he read she gave a small wave to indicate that he could proceed with the examination, hoping he didn’t find much offense in her slight question. He was older than her obviously but he didn’t even look older than her eldest brother and certainly not as old as her usual doctors. Thinking of her usual doctors Sosicly shook her head at her own over excitement before gently taking the parchment back to scribble again underneath her previous writings.

I have not had an episode or any blood come up in three weeks!

Handing the paper back she began to swing her legs once more, three weeks was a long time and then today she would have her celebration and maybe, Viratas willing, she might not have an episode ever again. But even her mind called her a fool for her melodramatic, optimistic thoughts.

Veldrys stood completely still as Sosicily began to write. Only his eyes moved a little as he watched her, studied her. The expression on his face was calm and reassuring. There was not a hint of impatience.

„Yes“, he replied as she remarked that he looked very young for a doctor. „I know.“ He smiled very lightly. „I only recently finished my training, but I assure you that I’m competent to treat you. From your words I have the impression that you’ve had this problem for a while, maybe even since you were small. Am I correct?“

As she indicated that he could proceed with the examination, he retrieved what looked like a wooden tube, placed one end on her chest and put his right ear against the other end. He could hear it clearly. There was a sound that shouldn’t be there.

He put the instrument away again and looked at her. Before he could decide on the proper treatment for her, he needed more information.

„Did you do anything exhausting before the blood came up? Or did you recently suffer from a cold? Both stress and an illness can make such symptoms worse.“

Check Up (Veldrys)

Postby Sosicly Magnolia on May 16th, 2013, 7:52 pm

Sosicly felt a tension she hadn’t realized was in her spine release to leave her slumping a bit on the cot. It wasn’t his youngness that made her nervous but his unfamiliarity but the ease he seemed to have settled a few of her subliminal protests. His question brought a bitter smile though it was not meant unkindly, and the young woman nodded and rocked her arms trying to communicate that is was since she was very small indeed.

Her eyes followed his every movement with little interest, she did not care how they checked her or tried to fix her so long as she could go home after. And today she would not even have to go straight home to blandness, the though cheered her greatly. By the time he pulled away the excitement that had her legs swinging eagerly was back, though she was careful to angle herself as to not kick the medic. Gesturing to the instrument he was putting away she pointed at her ear inquiringly asking in her own way if her could hear inside, a distraction from Veldry’s questions because she doubted he would be happy with her answers.

I was trying dancing again, then I was climbing and I…stumbled. And before that I had went to swim in the Blue Grotto. No cold.

Truthfully she had been angry she still couldn’t do dancing and had foolishly tried, only to throw up any food she had eaten and had gotten stuck in the pool because she was too tired to pull herself out. Getting home had not been pleasant. She hesitated before handing it too him, And sometimes it just gets worse when I do nothing. But it has not been…bad.

She gave him a bright smile as if to insist she was fine now and all was well. After all she wasn’t coughing now, and Viratas above she hoped he wouldn’t give her more medicine. Why was did all medicine taste so bitter? Looking over her writing once more she showed him the paper, keeping her smile up.

Check Up (Veldrys)

Postby Veldrys on May 22nd, 2013, 2:47 pm

„I see“, Veldrys remarked as Sosicly confirmed that, yes, she’d had a problem with her lungs since she had been small. If that was the case, her illness was chronic, and probably wouldn’t go away again, barring divine intervention which he couldn’t provide since Rak’keli hadn’t deigned to mark him yet and maybe never would. But he might be able give her something that would keep it from getting worse, at least in the immediate future. For that he needed to know which medications the other doctors had given her though.

Maybe he could try something different.

„What did my colleagues prescribe?“ he wanted to know, and then he added. „Do you regularly take your medicine?“ He knew from experience that people, especially young people, were often unwilling to take their medicine or simply forgot to take it if nobody reminded them.

As he waited for her answer, he gently took her arm and touched her wrist to feel her pulse. It was steady. That was a good sign. He smiled and released her arm again, nodding as he did so. Her lungs were damaged, but at least there was nothing wrong with her heart.

„You went dancing and climbing – and swimming?“ He arched an eyebrow as he heard that and looked at her incredulously. „That would even have exhausted a healthy person, and you are not healthy! There is nothing wrong with a little activity, but you shouldn’t be doing everything at once! Can you promise me that you’ll be a little more careful in the future? I don’t want to see you at the Purging again for a while!“

Check Up (Veldrys)

Postby Sosicly Magnolia on May 28th, 2013, 12:27 am

Sosicly waved her hand in a so-so manner, writing swiftly with a shrug, It changes a lot, sometimes stronger or weaker. The Purging does not always have what I need to medicines so I do not always take some.

The quill tapped on the bed as she tried to recall what she had taken recently, a sort of tea if she recalled. For a few chimes she sat there feeling like her mother was testing her weaving and she had forgotten how to string up a loom. The quill halted, and she look from Veldrys to the paper quite a few times, she was not going to give much of an answer.

For blood coughing it is a drink…ginger? Ginsink? Ginseng? Gengseng? I do not know. And usually a mixture of things for lung relaxing, I think. Would you give something different? Tilting the paper toward him, she wondered how many Symenestra actually came to the purging.

Sosicly shook her head, a bit sad and a bit angry at his words. Veldrys was whole, sturdy for a Symenestra, he did not have to worry about falling. A Symenestra! Falling! But she had to test it to see how long she could last. For all her inner turmoil the words stayed smooth on the paper, except for the occasional shake, and the harsh thrusting of the paper for him to read the words.

You are kind but I make no promise. I need to know how long my body will last. Some medics say I may be bedridden by midlife regardless. I would rather end up here, tired and unhealthy, than never try anything and be condemned. Purging visits always had a way of sapping the fun from things, at least she could still look forward to after the visit. But she didn’t begrudge him, he was kinder than some, and she gave him a half smile then a shrug, as if to say it didn’t really matter.

Check Up (Veldrys)

Postby Veldrys on June 10th, 2013, 3:16 pm

„No, the tea is fine“, Veldrys decided. „But I want you to take something else as well. I’m going to make a salve for you that I want you to rub on your chest every evening before you go to bed. It will help relax your lungs as well and make it a little easier for you to breathe. I’m also going to give you a mixture of herbs that I want you to put into a pot of hot water and inhale. If …“

He stopped. He had been about to suggest that she should move to a place that was closer to the sea, to a warmer place – he knew that such things sometimes worked wonders as far as lung diseases were concerned – but she was a Symenestra. Symenestra were often met with hatred, and Kalinor was so far from the rest of the world that she might not survive the journey, at least not without a number of body guards.

„If somebody with a mark from Rak’keli comes to Kalinor, you should see them as well“, he said instead. There was no point in suggesting that she leave Kalinor for the surface. „Rak’keli’s chosen can do things that a simple doctor like me is incapable of. A combination of Rak’keli’s gnosis and conventional medicine will most likely prolong your life …“

„I understand“,
he whispered as he read her last message. He really did. He understood what it was like to feel the need to try something regardless of the fact that it might not be good for you, even if it was for a different reason. He had never talked about what had happend in Lhavit to anybody. „I understand your need to enjoy your life as long as you can, but please try to at least take a break occasionally. If you do that, do everything I said, and we find a healer with Rak’keli’s mark, you may never become bedridden.“
