The Diamond of Kalea is located on Kalea's extreme west coast and called as such because its completely made of a crystalline substance called Skyglass. Home of the Alvina of the Stars, cultural mecca of knowledge seekers, and rife with Ethaefal, this remote city shimmers with its own unique light.

The 1st of winter 513AV

The day started in the same old rhythm the bat was used to. Waking up, late in the afternoon already. How he exactly knew, he didn’t know. He could feel it. It probably had something to do with his biological clock imbedded in his brain, but he didn’t care. As long as it was accurate. His lips parted widely in a noisy yawn, emitting weird smelling air from inside. He smacked his lips. Something slimy had gathered in the back of his throat. Any attempts to swallow it failed. Bran then tried getting it out of his mouth by gurgling fiercely.

Pressing the tip of his tongue against his palate, he kind of created a plug. Forcing the air to stream out, while making sounds as if he was choking, he hoped it would lessen the grip of the slime. It didn’t work. The only result he achieved was that he had to chough badly. To him it felt as if he was about to chough up and throw out his stomach. Fortunately, it didn’t turn out that way. Tears gathered in the corners of his dark orbs, his throat feeling like a piece of raw meat. Water! He needed to drink.

Getting to his feet and stumbling to the kitchen, he searched for a bowl. Where had he placed the bloody thing? Maybe he should clean this place a bit. It would make things a bit easier. Especially so when he needed to find something. It would be a whole lot more practical. But well, he wasn’t one for order. Certainly not a supporter of law and order. Personal preferences. Anyway, back to the bowl. He opened the first drawer he laid his eyes on. Of course it wasn’t there. Lost objects could never be found in the first place you looked into. It was an unwritten, but well-known rule. After searching in the first place, in this case the nearest drawer, it all came down to luck.

Unfortunately, luck wasn’t his speciality. Naturally, ‘three times the charm’ did apparently not apply on this particular thief. Or maybe it was just taking a break. Every single time he needed to find something. Not that he believed that superstitious stuff. Alright that’s a lie. Although he didn’t want to admit it, or perhaps he didn’t even know it, a small part of him held on to that small sliver of hope that superstition gladly provided.

Ah, there it was! Hidden in a dark corner of a cupboard, the bat had almost overlooked the wooden object. Almost. Reaching out and kneeling down, his whole underarm disappeared in the small space of the deposit. Fingers curling around the rim, he brought both his hand and the bowl back. Getting back up, he could feel the joints in his knees protest with an audible, yet unpainful dry snapping sound. That was quite worrisome. Well, placing things in perspective, he had only just awoken and his body, including his bones, was still adapting to the new active state.

Filling the bowl with some water from the sink, he gulped it down, relieving his somewhat sore throat. The annoying slime plug was still present though. It was very irritating. However, the bat acknowledged that thinking about it would only provide fuel for the feeling, so he figured he should just ignore it. Which was easier said than done. Most things were though. His feet shuffled back the way he came, while his hands threw the now empty bowl somewhere on the counter of the small kitchen. He did it without thinking, but realised what he had done when he heard the clattering noise of the thing connecting with the floor. Well, at least now he knew why he could never find anything.

The bat noticed his feet had led him back to the place he had been sleeping. Which happened to be the middle of the small living room. A blanket was fumbled up, carelessly thrown aside by a waking sleepyhead. The thief himself. It would have been more comfortable sleeping on the bunk, but that had been occupied by Engghaen since about half a season. That reminded him, where was she anyway? Not here, answered his mind dryly. He shrugged. Whatever. She did as she pleased. On that note, why was she still staying at his place anyways?

Not that he wanted her to leave. Okay, maybe a little. His back craved for a comfortable sleeping place, and his muscles were aching most of the time when he woke up. But he enjoyed her company. It kept the cold of loneliness at bay. Talking about cold, it was rather chilly in here. Upon opening the curtains, he noticed white flakes drifting down slowly. People passing by his window held on to a fast pace, hurrying to get to their destination, hands tucked away in their pockets or in warm looking gloves. Filled with a woolly fabric no doubt. Then his vision was blurred by the condense of his breath on the glass. He turned away. I should go make a fire. I can feel the hairs on my arms stand up.

With orange tongues licking the thick logs piled up in the hearth, the fire crackled in joy. Showing it’s pleasure by spreading a small circle of heat around it. After a couple of chimes however, it warmed up the entire room. Letting out a sigh of relief as the fire’s warmth washed over his body, the bat grabbed the nearest chair and sat down. The cool wood felt a little strange against his bare skin, but he didn’t mind. The contrast of the cold wood and warm air was rather pleasant actually.

Well now he was seated, facing the flickering shadows the fire casted upon the small chamber, his mind wandered off. Images of scenes from times past blurred by. Travelling back in time, digging into his memories stored deep within, but at the same time the future was displayed. Although Brandon was, in no way, a seer or a clairvoyant, they still popped up. Of course what he saw weren’t visions, nor were they indeed the future and past. They were mere memories. Some of the past, some of the future. His imagination running wild. Speculations of the mind of what tomorrow and the days after that would have in store for him.

That and of course the course that his relatively short life had taken. Also the troubles haunting his present life. One of them was not present at the moment. A female. Kelvic nevertheless. On top of that a cat. Engghaen indeed. Who else? Not that she was actually trouble, no. She was just a lot on his mind. How come? He wasn’t quite sure himself. Something about the two of them bothered him. Their relationship. After all those days since they had met, he still didn’t quite know what kind of bond had formed between them. Not a Kelvic bond, that much was certain.

But… what was she to him? The first thing that popped in his head was ‘a friend’. Of course. He trusted her. Actually, he trusted her more than any other person in Lhavit at the moment. He felt a bit protective about her. Well, he did watch over her. He even had offered her his bed and allowed her to live at his place. It sure was a lot more pleasant with her around. First of all the company she provided him was a nice effect of having her. Not to mention she was pleasant to lay eyes on as well. He grinned.

Their first meeting was still fresh in his memory. There were a few holes in it, but well, it didn’t quite matter. All he could remember was that it had been very funny to her. Kind of. The rest was as clear as a shard of skyglass. Figures, he had sobered up after falling and nearly drowning in the fountain. He had been lucky… The thief would think twice about drinking too much now. A smile rippled over his lips. Lips… That reminded him, He and Enggy had been through a romantic encounter for one or other reason. He blamed the liquor in his blood for his behavior, but she? Well, maybe she just went along with him. You know, for fun. Or maybe, just maybe, she had seen him as a decent mate or something.

It had been mating season for him though. For him. Not for her. If memory served, he recalled that cats mated in spring. Which meant that she hadn’t been affected by hormones. He probably had been. Though it hadn’t had such a strong effect on him. Yet. Oh well. It didn’t have to get a better grip on his behavior during fall. He liked to be in control of his own actions. Speaking of behavior, it was winter now right? That would mean he should actually be hibernating. But, with the current layer of fat he would even make it through half a week in hibernation. He sighed. Besides he still had his thievish duties to attend. And he had a contract. Tsk. There would be a lot of trouble coming his way this season.

Huh. Winter. By the look of things, it was already taking the city in its snowy grip. He didn’t need a second glance through the windows of his small house to know that it was pretty cold already. Going out wouldn’t be high on his to do list now. Certainly not when the weather was raining down icy flakes on the residents of the land below the clouds. Including Lhavit. Though one might consider the celestial city to be located in the clouds… Or not? Positioned high on mountain peaks, the city did touch the sky, but Brandon didn’t quite find that the Lhavitians were residents of the sky. Mountains were, no matter how high, still but an extension of the earth reaching out to the heavens.

Caught up in his musings about that matter, he strayed further from his original stream of thoughts than he liked. Noticing this, he returned his focus back to his plans for the near future. He didn’t quite like them. Why? Because they included spending money. Probably a lot of Kina. Something he didn’t like to do. Understatement. Actually, he loathed spending money. Unless it was to get more of the oh so lovely clattering coins.

But he didn’t have much of a choice really. With his current outfit, he would catch a cold as quickly as he caught moths during a moonlit hunting flight in spring. Very quickly. As such he had to go and buy some clothes. Warm ones preferably. However, going out while it was freezing wouldn’t be such a great idea. Not with his current clothing, sadly. Maybe he’d even have to buy another cloak as well. Or a coat. Or perhaps something in between. If he could find something like that. He nodded to himself in thought. Yes, that would definitely be great.

Anything else he needed to do? Maybe do some preparation for his journey. So he could continue his travels. And his dream. Where he’d go he didn’t know yet though. Not even a general direction. Although… he could head in the direction of Kalinor… The cave city he originated from. It would be nice to see his parents again. Gallan would probably be happy to see him again too. Actually, both of his parents would. How long had it been since he’d left the city of Symenestra? About a year? That was a bit too long. Maybe three seasons. Something like that. It had been one of the first days of spring. Give or take a few.

Heh. Reminded him of Lethia’s advices. Something about that weapons could come in handy when travelling across the land. That was pretty good advice actually. Vicious beasts roamed the plains between the different cities. Travelling was quite dangerous. When he had been making his way to Lhavit, he had been in bat form almost continuously. It was safer that way. Of course taking his scarf with him had proven to be quite a bother, but he was glad he hadn’t rid himself of the cloth. Believe it or not, but the thief had grown attached to the black object.

Weapons and companions… Both could be bought. Though buying both would prove a bit too expensive. If possible he’d just steal a weapon, but that wouldn’t be the right way to get one. Strange thoughts for a thief, no? But still, if your life could depend on the quality of the weaponry and his skill of wielding it, then it should better be decent. He couldn’t be sure of the quality when he claimed it in the dark. No, a decent shop with decent products. That would be the place he’d have to go to. He sighed. This season would indeed bring quite a bit of trouble with it.
