[An Elegant Weave] An Elusive Catch

Postby Xira Hezmek on February 11th, 2014, 4:38 am

The best way to get one's name out to the public is to tell as many people as possible that name. And Xira took this to heart, but he was puzzled on how to go about this. He was munching a delicious lunch that afternoon, enjoying the shows and performances at the Theater square. However, all he could think of was what he was going to do to get work, to make a living and to feed himself. If he was to be a successful messenger, deliver-er, then he had let people who needed things delivered know. What was he to do? Go door to door and ask if they needed messages delivered? Theoretically his work would come about by word of mouth, but he needed people talking about him first for that to happen.

A pair of jugglers in the square had dropped a bean filled ball, much to Xira's amusement. Somehow the simple act sparked a thought in his mind. What if dropped his name to the merchants of the city? They were the most connected individuals, the innkeepers and the shop owners, and they should know exactly who would need his services. They might even need him themselves. One juggler deftly kicked the ball into his hand and tossed it to his fellow performer, continuing their performance of juggling balls between them. He tossed a silver miza into their basket and went on his way.

The rest of the day was spent visiting shops in the Nettle district and then in the Warehouse district. At the Ironworks and the Feather and the Shaft he introduced himself and his purpose and where he could be found. It was met with brief nods and neutral comments and certainly no commitments. Unlikely they would need him with apprentices and assistants, but he hoped that he would at least make an impression. At the Sultros Blades, he found no one there. The owner was probably doing errands or having a break. He made a note to come back later.

The Ethereal Notions was creepy beyond compare. He was polite of course, but he itched to leave the entire time he was there. Whisper, the owner of what turned out to be just a home, seemed pleased that her reputation was known among the living and agreed that if she needed messages or parcels sent she would count on him. It was less of a shop and more the home of someone who did a service, something he imagined he shared with Whisper. When he left he felt as if eyes of a curious presence followed him until he was far away.

The apothecary shop, Stormhold Salves, had an intriguing woman with four arms as it's owner. Sahfri was a pleasure to meet and claimed that if she needed his services, she would seek him out. Similarly Atta, the florist of the city claimed that if she got a large order, she might take him up on his offer. The bold old woman even attempted to sell some flowers to the young man, claiming that there had to be a young lady in his life. While flattering, he had to refuse, but claimed that he would return the moment a woman entered into his life.

And so it went until he went through the majority of the shops in the city. Xira felt that he had accomplished a great feat. Surely one of them would require his help at some point, perhaps they would tell their customers even. The last place to go was to the Elegant Weave before going to the inns and taverns and then to the Windmount stables. He whistled to himself as he slipped into The Elegant Weave and was bombarded with the sight of a dazzling array of colored textiles and garments of all qualities, kinds and styles.

"Hello there young man" came a voice from the back, "If you see anything you like, let me know."

Xira follow the feminine voice to the back, ducking out of the way of a curtain of linen. He couldn't see the voice's owner while he moved back, but apparently she could see him. The place smelled of dye and clean cloth, an intoxicating scent for someone who favored washing himself and his clothes often. At last he had tracked down the woman. The woman, who he would later discover to be Navia Druva herself, was busy inspecting a fabric and making comments to a younger woman. "Yes, yes, this will do. Make sure to use to have her use the right stitches this time, the Lady's dress must be perfect. Gods know we are being paid enough." When she turned her attention to him she smiled, "Did you see anything you liked? Maybe something for the woman in your life? We also have made clothes over there for yourself or for your lady." She gestured distractedly to the clothing portion of the store.

A busy woman indeed, she managed to deliver a full sales pitch while working with her staff. He bowed to the woman, "I actually come to offer you my services." He straightened up and gave her a winning smile, "If you have need of someone to deliver goods and messages in or out of the city I am yours." This caused the woman to pause and look at the man before her shrewdly. "I actually might have something for you sir. What is your name?" Xira gave it and asked her "What would that be?"

[An Elegant Weave] An elusive catch

Postby Xira Hezmek on February 25th, 2014, 5:19 am

Given that Navia was a busy woman, her staff seemed to flit about like birds. In his mind their actions seemed more like perching on the open spaces to get a quick affirmative from their boss before flying off to handle other tasks. He was still waiting for an explanation when he asked, "Is it always this busy?" Which was met with a distracted nod and a smile.

At last the two of them were alone and the woman paused and beckoned to the man. "Take a walk with me Xira. I'll explain on the way."

Moments later the two were out the front door, Navia with a large package under her arm and Xira waiting to hear the explanation. "I can only do so much these days. My employees are very busy that I can't spare any of them on some of the larger or more distant orders. Truthfully, you couldn't have come at a better time." She tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear and adjusted the parcel, "I trust you know where the Council of Nine is? Roshin District?" He nodded in the affirmative, aching to help the woman with her oversized package. "Well I have an order that can't wait any longer. The dress is finished but if it doesn't get to the Lady Yanna right away, we might lose her custom. That is where you come in. I need you to go to miss Yanna's apartment, door 120, or wherever she may be to deliver it in person before the sun sets. When you make it back you'll be paid."

Already the busy woman was distracted, Xira could see another woman coming with a roll of parchment that looked like a diagram. "So here you are Xira, make haste. Remember, get it to her before sunset." Navia handed the surprisingly heavy package and hustled off, leaving Xira in a confused state. He hadn't said a word and here he was, a job tossed into his lap as it were.

By the time he had the package fully in hand she was gone to her many duties. "... Will do." He said to himself, feeling a bit dissatisfied at being left in that way. The package turned out to be more bulky then heavy. It was wrapped in brown waterproofed skin to keep the elements out and tied closed with a string. He hefted the package over his shoulder and was on his way. Hopefully he would not get lost this time.

[An Elegant Weave] An elusive catch

Postby Xira Hezmek on March 1st, 2014, 2:17 am

First thing was first. He needed to navigate his way out to the Roshin district. There were many routes he could take and each had its own merits. All of them headed west so he started off in that direction. While he walked he went over in his mind the plan for the best route. Xira wasn't the best at planning things, in fact many of his plans fell to pieces before they had a chance to prove themselves.

There was a lot to go into planning a route too. Xira weighed all the variables he could think of in his mind. Key was time. He had to get there before sun set. He looked at the sky for the sun. It seemed to be the 3rd or 4th bell after noon give, not that his gauge of the sun was in any way accurate. It was a total guess. In case the next part was the route. Getting lost in the castle would be the worst scenario and would waste more time. So naturally he couldn't take any shortcuts in attempts to save time.

The sun was lost to him as he ducked into the tall gates and into the city proper. So he would need to take ways that he knew well which translated to main corridors. if he went between the Bittern and Dyres district and around the Maiden's district he would end up dab in the middle of the Roshin. He closed his eyes while he walked, letting the flow of traffic guide him as he pictured in his mind the map of the city and where he needed to go. So a left at the main corridor branch and a right again just before the Jordon district then straight on until he found where he was looking for. Once there all he needed would be to count doors.

With his eyes now open, Xira smiled to himself and walked with a light step. This was going to be easy. He had 3 whole bells to find the place and the walk to the Roshin district was no more than half of a bell. He whistled to himself, a marching tune that was caught up by some of his fellow street-walkers. The song had grown in popularity recently, some bard played it at the swan and was picked up by all the other bards. He constantly heard it, and apparently had everyone else.

The main path branched from left to right with smaller hallways further branching off into what he assumed was the maiden district. If he had a string on a map he would be following such a path and thus followed along the left corridor towards the Jordon district. It felt like only a few moments before he was turning right again. Xira never stuck around this part of the city. He had nothing to hide, but nor did he want anything to do with those that were constantly hauled off to the tank. One such person was loose in the knees drunk and passed the opposite way the courier was headed, he was flanked by a pair of knights that were supporting him more than escorting him. He shivered and hoped to never get put in the tank nor incur the ire of the city's protectors.

At last he made it to the Roshin district. He shifted the weight of the package on his back, wondering for the hundredth time what was in it. What could be so heavy and bulky? He remembered, perhaps falsely that Navia said it was a dress. Unless it was made of metal he could scarcely believe it. Now came the easy part. He peaked down a tributary corridor and took note of the numbers, 400s, so the next one. Naturally the next corridor had 300s and so Xira had confidence when he skipped the next one and turned into the 100s block of the castle.

With little fuss Xira found the door he was looking for and knocked. "Almost done" he thought to himself. When the door opened he smiled and bowed to the short, wrinkled man before him. "Wuzzit? Who are you?" He asked gruffly, peering up at Xira behind bushy white eyebrows that drooped over his eyes, like caterpillars. "Greetings Sir, I am Xira Hezmek. I have a parcel for the Lady Yanna. May I inquire if she is in? This is for her hands only." The old man grinned wickedly, "Well of course you can inquire, free country and all." he wheezed a bit when he spoke, but it was as if he was laughing all the same. "I can't say I know where that silly daughter by marriage is, probably off at the soothing water for all I know. Sure you don't want to let me take it off your hands?" Xira shook his head and smiled, " A manner of honor M'lord, well I best be off. Thank you for your time." He bowed again to the grinning man and turned and walked off in a hurry.

Only a minor set back, he still had plenty of time.

[An Elegant Weave] An elusive catch

Postby Xira Hezmek on March 2nd, 2014, 7:35 am

At this point Xira was somewhat concerned. Best place to find a client when delivering was typically at his or her home. He would have waited, of course. But there was no telling when the woman would return. He had a time constraint here and he meant to keep it.

So back into his mental map he went, picturing the big blobs of city dwelling as if he were a bird. Best bet for him was to move south of along the corridor between the Maiden and the Illythian and that would put him where he needed to be. The Soothing Waters was situated near the Windmount stables. He just needed to find the place and inquire about his quarry. Xira felt as if he was hunting prey, tracking it by the people she affected in her blundering through the social landscape.

The crowds were thinning and so the courier started to jog, not wanting to waste a moment. He ducked between holes in the ever shifting crowd and sought as much speed as he could safely garner. He had to tone his speed down when he bumped into a child, almost barrelling the poor lad over.

What a fine mess this was. He hadn't even thought of how he was going to prove he got the package to the lady when he did. She legally made it so that he could not prove it but would have to trust his word. Xira worked hard to be trustworthy but that didn't mean others believed him. By the time he made it to the bathhouse the doors out to the windmount stables showed that the sun was drawing closer and closer the horizon. Syna unintentionally sought the ruination of this contract.

Through the double doors and down into the depths of the castle he scurried, taking steps at a time due to his impatience. When he came to reception he was out of breath and sweaty. Not ideal in any situation but he had a job to complete. Ivis, the receptionist, was nonplussed at the red faced, out of breath man and waited patiently for him to catch it. "Hi I have a parcel for the Lady Yanna. Is she here?" He panted the words out, sucking in deep breaths of warm air.

The man before him was much like Xira, calm, pleasant and utterly dedicated to his work. As such it took a few moment before he responded, letting the courier match the unflappable man's rhythm. "Yes, she was here. You just missed her. Good thing to, I couldn't let you in unless you were interested in taking a bath." The man smiled kindly to the courier, "I overheard them though. If you are quick you might be able to head them off on their way to the White Swan. But if they come back this way, I'll let you them know that you came looking for them, mister...?" Xira gave his name to the receptionist and thanked the man profusely, Ivis nodded and gave his name also. "Come back any time, hopefully next time for a nice massage."

It took longer to go up those stairs then going down them and that time could never be given back. Such was life. He gave a brief prayer to Syna to slow her pace. She would not but on some level he hoped she would at least her his prayer.

[An Elegant Weave] An elusive catch

Postby Xira Hezmek on March 7th, 2014, 7:00 am

The path of the sun was almost to the rim of the earth by the time the panicked courier burst into the White Swan Inn. He paused at the door and breathed in deeply, sweeping his gaze over the occupants. He was not searching for his target; he did not know her. He was desperately searching the crowd for someone who would. Specifically the owner of the place. If she didn't then he was prepared to jump onto a table and ask the entire place. Waiters swarmed the place, tending to the inhabitants. One of them directed him to his employer

"Welcome to the White Swan Inn, my name is Jazmin Collins, how my I help you this evening." The proprietress of the establishment said with a smile. "Hello, yeah. Um I need to find a Lady Yanna, do you know if she is about?" He asked, barely keeping the note of haste from his voice. The innkeeper nodded, "She is over there at the table, is there something wrong?" Xira visably relaxed, his shoulders sagging in relief. "No, no, M'lady. Just that I did not wish to be late on delivering this package." The courier hefted the bulky wrapped dress.

The owner smiled at his dedication and nodded.
"Ah, yes. You were here earlier. I see you made good on your offer. Well, follow me I will introduce you then." Together they walked off to the indicated table. The lady Yanna was a short, delicate creature. She had large, doe like eyes that sparkled amber in the light and curly tresses of hair going down the small of her back. Dressed in a garb that landed between ostentatiously formal and elegantly comfortable, she was radiant. Both she and her husband smiled and looked up at them.
"Yes?" She asked in a whispery soft voice.

Xira bowed to the Lady Yanna and Jazmin curtsied.
"Good evening Madam, I have here for you a courier. He is a very dedicated man and has something for you." Xira nodded and smiled wide, "Greetings. My name is Xira Hezmek. I come on behalf of the proprietress of An Elegant Weave, Navia." Yanna smiled softly and batted her delicate eyelashes at Xira, making him cough. " I have here a package for your hands only, though at your leisure I can have it taken to your home." She nodded and her husband spoke. "That's quite alright lad. I'll take with us when we leave tonight. Is that not what a husband is for?" The man chuckled at his own joke which had Xira chuckling good naturedly with him.

Something occurred to him however. "M'lady, might I impose a small request. Would you write a brief letter verifying that I made it here before the sun set? It is a thing of honor if it was in your own hand." He smiled apologetically at the thought of causing any discomfort but was gladdened when she assented. Jazmin summoned a waiter to retrieve parchment, ink and a quill along with other writing supplies. After a she had finished he left the package in their care. A missive in hand he returned and received his just reward.

Such was the plight of the courier.
