[The Deepwater Hole] Glowing Horses of the Sea

Postby Matthew on June 12th, 2014, 10:34 pm

42nd of Summer, 508 AV.

He had been practicing awkward little flips into the ocean when he had remembered that he had told Kavala he would take her to see the seahorses.

Performing a sharp front slip was harder than it appeared and he had been stuck on practicing it for awhile now. He always came to this particular spot out on the coast of the Isle, not too far away from Mura. Every so often a Konti would walk by, probably enjoying their own personal time, and would greet him with a soft smile or a little wave and a nod of the head. Most of the time he was alone though, which was really the way he liked it most. He had managed to get the stretching part down, that was easy enough. He had a solid routine down, one where he stretched wrists and ankles, then hamstrings, then neck and shoulders. It was the rest of it that gave him trouble.

He wasn't really able to get a running start, as he had opted to practice out in the ocean. That way no matter how he landed he wouldn't end up hurting himself. His spot was a shady area that was overlooked by a small cluster of trees, so he could strip down to just a pair of simple shorts, wade out into the shallow depths, and then front flip as long as he could muster without fear of injury. If he tried to get a running start then the water would just end up bogging him down. Perhaps that was why he was having trouble getting height on the jump that he was supposed to do before he attempted to flip forward. He tested the theory, jumping up and down a few times in the ocean. He bent at the knees and then thrusted himself upwards, trying to direct all of his force up into the sky. The water splashed around him as his hands flew in the air, elbows by his ears. He landed with another splash, bending a bit at the knee to absorb the impact of the blow. Yes, he was definitely losing quite a bit of height because he insisted doing it in the water. Would it be impossible to overcome the handicap he was placing on himself? It certainly helped with his bodybuilding training, adding weight and additional stress to his leg muscles. Which did he want to focus on?

Matthew crouched and then flung himself upwards again, but this time tucked at the knees and pushed himself into a forward rotation. He executed a tight little spin in the air but landed on the small of his back, once again missing the landing. He let his slim body sink into the salty water, eventually coming to float onto his back, staring up at the sky as he pondered his options. Flipping himself over, he aimlessly began to doggy-paddle. He was normally a bit afraid of swimming and all the things that could possibly lurk in the depths, but the clear waters of the Isle seemed to dissolve his fears. Even though he was a sight that would make most Konti laugh, Matthew didn't care. He needed the practice anyways. He swam and he swam, legs and hands churning until he had worn himself out and was forced to let the waves take control and wash him ashore. At one point a wave had crashed over him, and that was when he had saw a hurried little creature cutting through the water to head back to where it had been carried from deeper in the ocean. A seahorse. He was supposed to show someone a seahorse, wasn't he? The konti. Kavala, someone who he assumed was pretty close to the definition of friend. He had almost forgotten. How rude.

It was only a few chimes later that he began the hunt to find where best to introduce the konti woman to seahorses. The most obvious was the Silver Lake, something that he had often heard about in stories back home and something that was often discussed here. It was too sacred he assumed, so the young student moved on. Next was the Crystal Cavern, but he soon found that it was almost even more sacred. He eventually had to resort to questioning some of the few Konti he knew, mostly from classes or from what side jobs he had taken over the summer. Eventually he was led to the Deepwater Hole. one particular helpful Konti even gave him the perfect time to have his little adventure.

So he had left Kavala a note, thinking that it would be the best way to have her meet him at the Hole. He had left instructions on how to get there as well as a time at which to arrive, which would be soon after Syna had completely vanished from the sky.

If she did come, she would find him waiting, back facing the path that would have her approach the rather wide and deep hole. It was uniquely lit by the bright green glowing algae that lined both the walls and the bottom, casting a rather magical glow through what had been light blue waters only a dozen chimes ago. He briefly called upon his djed, summoning it from his stomach and swirling it through his veins, burning it to bring the auras of the scene shimmering into view. The aura of the glowing algae didn't look any different. They tasted slightly of salt, too. He blinked, not incredibly fond of the taste, reaching up and stripping his shirt from his flesh as he let the djed simmer back to a dormant state. If he had timed it correctly, the tip he had received from the konti would prove to be a useful one, the special event taking place right as Kavala hopefully made her entrance. The young man in just a pair of shorts was a beautiful sight, but the dozens of little pink and yellow seahorses that timidly made their way out of various little underwater caves were a different kind of beautiful. They were in a league of their own.

Matthew would turn to her as she approached, the green glow reflecting off both the seahorses and his eyes, a slender finger extending to point at the spectacle before them. His voice was soft and passive, not at all different from any other time that she had heard him speak. "These are seahorses."

[The Deepwater Hole] Glowing Horses of the Sea

Kavala had been having a rough day. Drae had her working on a project that wasn’t something she usually did. As part of her herbalism training, Kavala was branching out into poisons. And at her very beginning level, Drae was having her learn from three different but introductory poisons. Healers, her instructor had assured her, had to understand poisons in order to counteract them. And while Drae had went through and explained to her what the groups were, she’d left Kavala to pick. Kavala had taken extensive notes from the lecture, but it still didn’t mean she knew what she wanted to do.

“Kavala, the first thing you have to understand is that as you progress through poisoncrafting, you need to know all the groups poisons come from and both how to make the poisons found in those groups and how to counter them. Poisons are divided into eighteen groups. I’m going to run down all the groups there are. Then I want you to pick three groups to specialize in while you are a novice. When you get more competent, you can add a couple more groups to your knowledge base. Experts tend to know eight groups, while it isn’t until you are a master that you can learn all eighteen groups.” Drae instructed her, launching into her general lecture about each group. Kavala took careful notes, sketching quick pictures by each group so she’d understand them better.

Drae continued lecturing. Kavala took notes, and now that she was Drae’s talk was done and Kavala was left to choose, the Konti was having a rough time deciding. It didn’t help that her day had been filled with too many lectures, too many new things, and the pressure of having to meet Matthew for a ‘surprise’ after classes. Classes had run over. Kavala knew she should be grateful that Drae was taking a special interest in her, but it was getting a little overwhelming for the girl who grew up Drykas and had never owned any books. Now she had dozens of journals, all filled with class notes, and had just started a new one on poisons.

Writing…. She hated it. But she needed it. The Konti swore in Pavi and then brought her attention back to her notes, which were seriously degrading as the talk when on. The more Drae spoke, the less Kavala wrote. Until at the very end her notes were utterly subpar.

Konti favor aquatic poisons because they can have easy access to the materials needed for both producing them and countering them. Aquatic poisons come from plants and animals that live in the sea primarily, though some can be in fresh water.

There are also poisons brewed from the parts and venom of spiders. These poisons are called Aranedia. The Aranedia poisons tend to have a significant impact on a target’s physical strength. And for this reason, these poisons can be used as sedatives for both people and animals in some cases.

The group of poisons derived from trees is known as Arboreal. These are the longest lasting poisons and generally hold their strength four times their level rather than the three that is normal. Aboreal poisons mainly have an earthy or grassy scent or taste.

The bestial poisons are made from parts of animals, usually mammals. These poisons come from the blood, liver, horn, hearts, and even saliva.

Kavala paused to make a mental note to look into bestial poisons more carefully. While Drae didn’t give her a lot of information on them, Kavala was curious. There was a lot more emphasis placed on other poisons, especially the aquatic ones which Drae talked about in length, than perhaps gathering poisons from animal… parts. Oh. Kavala was a little slow on the uptake.

Dead animals. Kavala swallowed hard. It wasn’t that she didn’t see a lot of things dead on the Sea… it was just that she didn’t want them dead at her hands just to… make poisons.

And taking Bestial as a group would definitely mean she’d have to kill them to utilize poisons from their body. That thought was a disapproving one. She could salvage things from animals hunted, but killing them just for their poison value had no real appeal to her. She crossed it off her list, and starred the aquatics one. That would be a good place to start, especially here on Mura.

Drae lectured on, giving her more of the groups as Kavala frantically took notes.

Next came Chilopoda, which came from critters that Kavala had never seen. Drae spoke of them so fast that all Kavala got out of the talk was that they were insects that had multiple pairs of legs. These insects created poisons that slowed movement and agility.

Fungus poisons include molds, mildews and a whole host of mushrooms.

Chilopoda – insect poisons made from centipeds.
Fungus – brewed from mildews, molds, mushrooms and other fungi
Roots – largest family of poisons but weakest as well brewed from plants
Hymenoptera – poisons made from bees, hornets, wasps, etc. Mostly damage speed and agility.
Lotus – flower poisons very toxic
Lumbricida – worm poisons effecting strength
Mineral – poisons from rocks with varied effects, very easy to craft
Moss – Crafted from powdered moss. Have strong orders and are very common.
Non-Ferrous Metal – digestive poisons made from metal
Ooze – poisons made from jellies, oozes, and slime molds found underground. Easy to harvest, difficult to access…

Chilopoda would be fine in Kavala’s estimation because she could kill them with a lot less remorse than she could kill far more creatures. The same was easily to say of fungus. Kavala could kill fungus, no problem, and it was definitely a no brainer that there were mushrooms and other things included. However, if she was going to be practicing on the Sea of Grass, centipedes and fungus were going to be hard to come by. The animals and plants that were available back home were almost a specialty niche.

Roots made the most sense. Kavala had access to those. Hymenoptera could be feasible, but Lotus was definitely out. Lumbricida was possible, but Kavala had a real aversion to worms. She had the urge to kill all parasitic ones and didn’t particularly like them in the soils either.

Mineral and moss poisons were unappealing. It was something she could learn later, perhaps, but the strong odor and lack of challenge respectively were something that didn’t immediately get her excited. Kavala didn’t particularly like caves or being underground. There was too much Drykas in her, so the thought of oozes didn’t appeal. Metal poisons were for affecting the digestive system, which had very little use for a healer.. so that eliminated that poison.

Kavala went on, continuing to make her notes.

Scorpionida – scorpion poison which cause negative effects to physical strength
Serpente – snake poisons which have multiple health effects
Undead – poisons created from the remains of undead creatures
Vine – poison brewed from vines, generally safe to handle…

The lecture had ended with the rundown of the poison families. The problem was Kavala had to pick only three. Then, she was to go back to the lab and make one of the simplest formulas from one of the poison families she picked.

The Konti reviewed the list again…

It was hard to decide, especially since there were so many of them. Kavala ran down the list again, running her hands over her notes. Vines and Roots… made sense. She could work with them on the Sea of Grass and decidedly find the ingredients. But while she was here, Aquatics made sense too. Mura had so much available for it.

The Konti carefully jotted down her decision.

Aquatic, Root, Vine – These are my poisons of choice.

~K

The decision seemed so simple. Then, using Drae’s vast library of poisons, Kavala picked a book of aquatics and carefully reviewed a list of poisons she could easily make. Soon enough she found a recipe she thought she could handle. Keeping an eye on the clock since it was getting late and almost time she had promised to meet Matthew, Kavala hurried and added a note on the poison of her choice she’d need to make that night as homework.

Luminous Vos (3-dose tiny vial) –A violet colored fluid with the consistency of blood that when coming in contact with flesh, causes a stain that glows with a violet luminescence. Causes slight irritation to the affected area. Effects caused through contact. Effects last for up to 5 hours. Made from aquatic seaslugs.

Take several sea slugs, masticate them into a find sludge, strain, then distill for three hours. Once purified, the results of the stile become the poison.

Kavala checked out one of Drae’s portable distillers and carefully packing the equipment along with her journal, ink and the gear she would need for her homework. The device was small enough that it fit neatly into Kavala’s backpack once it was broken down. She decided to leave Windsong in the garden at the city, and headed off on foot to the place Matthew said they were meeting. Deepwater Hole? She’d never heard of it, but she was curious to see what he hand planned.

The walk cleared her head of talks of poison. But she hoped, before class the day after tomorrow, she’d have a chance to gather sea slugs enough to make the compound. Time with Matthew was important to her, but so too was her schoolwork. It was often easier to balance the two when they both had classes together because Matthew was competitive and wanted really to know everything there was to know about his interests. He kept her scrambling to learn and to think. She hated coming in behind him in her studies so it was always a competition for scors.

Then she headed off in the direction Matthew had told her to meet him, she wondered why he picked someplace like Deepwater Hole. Was it for one of their classes? Or did he have something else in mind? Carefully Kavala followed his handwritten instructions, finding the path to the place he wanted to meet as the light began to fade. The sunset was extraordinary, painting the sky like a living canvas. She stopped at the bottom of the trailhead around what appeared to be a rocky pool the path overlooked. Matthew was poised in the sunset, shadowed. She wondered absently if he had planned it that way. The sky was painted in breathtaking reds and oranges while the pool itself was bathed in green light. Kavala’s eyes were torn between studying the algae and studying Matthew. Her feet, refusing to pause longer, moved her forward until she was standing beside him. She carefully swung her backpack down and stepped closer to the edge where she could peer down.

Her eyes were widened with wonder and kept moving between him and the algae. Then suddenly she saw them. The seahorses darting in and out of their cover were pink and yellow. They moved in schools like herds of real horses. Kavala’s mouth slipped open into a soft ‘oh’. She glanced back at Matthew, suspecting some sort of trick, then offered him a soft smile of delight before she carefully set the backpack full of equipment down in the soft sand of the rocky path. Her shirt followed, joined then by her pants and boots.

Then the Konti, leaving the beauty of the man bathed in sunset behind, dove cleanly into the pool.. She slid into the water with the barest of splashes and was immersed deep in the glowing algae in moments. Matthew could tell from where he was standing that Kavala was hovering in the water column, spinning, trying to see everywhere and once. Her face was also twisted in joy as she laughed. Suddenly her arm shot up and she made a beckoning motion towards him. It was a clear sign to come in… come right in.

The seahorses were schooling around her now, just as curious about her as she was about them.

[The Deepwater Hole] Glowing Horses of the Sea

Postby Matthew on June 18th, 2014, 10:26 pm

There was a sense of satisfaction that his timing had managed to be fairly close to perfect. He had come to the Hole a few times before to properly experience it all for himself, taking note of about how long each phase of the spectacle took to develop, play out, and fade. He felt that some small part of him enjoyed such precise and probably useless calculations. It had really all come down to if Kavala arrived at the correct time, and thankfully she had. He watched her expression as she took in the scene before her, trying to pick it apart and break it down. It was a good reaction, that much was obvious from the smile that she shot at him. It wasn't just a polite smile, if he was correct. It was one that could be considered genuine. What about the other little reactions that she gave, though? The glance before the smile, the widened eyes, the little noise she had let out... they were all little pieces of a puzzle that he had already started to try and solve in his mind. If he could completely and totally understand every little expression that people could give, would that not start him out on the path to mastering the art of socialization?

A flurry of motion beside of him yanked him from his thoughts, pulling his attention back to Kavala. She was remarkably quick at removing her garments, something he had noticed that a lot of Konti were skilled at. He assumed it was because of the amount that they swam. They were able to unrobe and fold their clothes into a neat little pile then be in the water before he really even had time to finish pulling off his own articles of clothing, which was something that he felt he was quite skilled at, though for entirely different reasons. He watched both her and the seahorses for a few moments before nodding at her gesture to join her, quickly tugging off his shorts and slowly folding them into a nice little square of cloth. Giving it a small little pat, he turned his defined body and gracefully moved forward, the lines in his hips swaying side to side in a bit of a feminine walk. It was almost out of place when applied to the body of a man, but at the same time it did help draw attention... the intended purpose, really. He had practiced the walk many a time in the mirror, ever since he had noticed how some women did it so very naturally.

He slipped into the water, reminded yet again of how unafraid he was when it came to the crystal clear waters of Mura. These particular waters were brightly lit, which was even better. Everything within their reach was bathed in their glow, leaving no mysteries. There were the little caves in the sides of the Hole, but he assumed that they were safe since the cute little seahorse creatures had made a home in them. Soon he was treading water, making it a point to keep completely aware of his slowly-kicking legs and rotating arms, carefully treading water while also patiently approaching the surrounded Kavala.

The water was comfortable, something else that he had noticed in Mura. He had never been too hot or too cold once he had dipped into one of their many bodies of water. They were always the perfect temperature. Blue eyes narrowed in thought for a brief moment before he was once again distracted, an approaching seahorse speeding around him and then wiggling around in the water directly in front of him. A few others joined the initial one, the little creatures seemingly studying the human student before them. He stared at them right back, an unblinking and steady gaze, feeling a certain sort of comfort at their presence. Some animals intimidated him in a way, like the horse had when he was first learning to ride it behind Kavala. Even then there had been a slight sense of peace though. They were companionship that didn't require the social skills that he lacked, or the social interactions that made him feel slightly uncomfortable. Perhaps that was it. Animals always existed in comfortable silence. Well, sometimes they communicated in their own language. Understanding the subtle undertones in a bark or a neigh was something that would probably have to come with skill.

Matthew slowly spun in a circle, noticing that the seahorses were moving with him, keeping in front of him at all times. Were they merely interested in his front half, or had they somehow made some sort of eye contact that they were struggling to keep? Matthew hesitated for a moment, glanced at Kavala, then glanced back to the little fish in front of him. "...Hello?" His voice was soft and curious, wondering if the seahorse could actually understand a word he was saying? The creatures didn't change their motions, merely continued to bob back and forth in front of him.

He furrowed his brow at them and then slowly tilted his head toward Kavala, glancing at her eyes and speaking quietly. He was a bit afraid of scaring them all away, though they seemed to be rather courageous curious little things. "How was your day?" He always found a way to fit that into their conversation, every single day. It was like a little ritual for him, asking the simple question and then patiently listening and commenting on whatever her day had consisted of.

[The Deepwater Hole] Glowing Horses of the Sea

Kavala let the waters flow around her. She surfaced for Matthews’s sake, knowing the human had trouble breathing or speaking beneath the waves. But even above the water, the glow of the pool held them in thrall. It was as if they swam in spring green waters that were edged with blues and deeper greens. Sleek silver bodies cruised through the water, indicating that other life lived in the pool not just the colorful seahorses. Even the pale sand at the bottom of the huge pool was visible and seemed to glow with a paleness that was absolutely reflective of the moon even when there was none of Leth to be seen in the sky.

The Konti treaded water, her limps whipping gently and creating a current of her own making. She reached out, drew Matthew too her and gently clung to him in the water as the horses seemed to race around the pair. She tucked low in the water, where the salt laced sea lapped at her gills. She could breathe without much effort with the water boiling over her neck and slapping at her hair. Kavala fit herself in front of Matthew, facing away from him, so he could draw her to him and use her as something to hold on too that would never drown and was incapable of sinking much, even supporting his weight. They sometimes swam like this. She liked the feel of his body against her back, his arms around her, and she liked that her Kontiness could support them in the water so he could talk about what his day was like.

They often talked.

Kavala thought she’d talked more with Matthew than she had with anyone in the whole of Mizahar. And she’d miss that when she left for home. But there was still time, even now, and she was in no hurry to go anywhere. “I was with Drae today, taking one of her more unusual classes. I signed up for poisons and today was the first day.” Kavala said, snuggling close to him, wanting to feel his strength against her back and hoping he’d wrap part of his legs around her. They were treading water together, watching the seahorses, and it seemed like a perfect moment. She wanted to linger in it if possible.

“Do you know there are like twenty different families of poisons? Usually they are broken down by what they are made from… like all the poisons made from snake venom are throwing in the poison family Serpente? As beginning students, I had to pick three families to work with. It was a very hard decision with that many families and so many interesting things to learn. But in the end, I picked aquatic, root, and vine for my starting families.” She said, sighing softly and then shifting slightly so she could turn in his arms and better face him. Kavala was tired and the fatigue showed on her face. She kept kicking, treading water, but it was a gentler sort of treading now, one that paced the Konti’s strength, and not her endurance.

“Aquatic was an easy choice because as long as I am studying here, there will be an endless amount of materials to choose form. I even got my first assignment.” Kavala said, reaching out to rub his shoulders and tangle her legs in his for just a moment. She seemed to need the contact.

“My first poison is going to be Luminous Vos. It’s made from sea slugs that glow luminously in pools like this. I brought a portable distiller to make it tonight if we can gather some slugs here. The recipe is relatively simple. You create a fluid by grinding them up and distilling the liquid. It comes out a violet color the consistency of blood. If you put it on the skin it causes slight irritation to the effected area. It can last for five hours, but I think it’s obviously built for distraction and nothing else.”
She added, looking thoughtful and glancing around to see if she could see any slugs beneath the water. They would have to get close to the bottom, to find any sea slugs at all. And even then Kavala wondered if they could get by the seahorses… who were oddly tempting her to long to ride.

Kavala watched Matthews face, not knowing if he was interested in poisons or not. He very well could be because so far she hadn’t run into anything the man wasn’t interested in. “I took good notes.” She said softly, ducking her head under the water for a moment before rising back out of it slightly and shaking her wet hair. Kavala knew how to bribe Matthew. “You can read them if you want and copy them if you like.” She offered, knowing he’d most likely want too.

“How was your day? Did your classes go well?” She asked, knowing today was the day neither of them had classes together. It was usually an extra long day when that happened and strangely enough Matthew always planned some sort of rest and relaxation afterwards. This trip to see the Seahorses was just an example.

Suddenly one brushed her back and another brushed Matthew’s leg. It was a more or less friendly gesture, but it reminded the Konti that she wasn’t alone. Quickly Kavala ducked her head under water, smiled at the playful beasts, and then gasp and surfaced. “One has something in it’s….” Kavala started to tell Matthew just about the moment a sea sponge slapped her upside the head. She blinked in surprise, not sure what to do then scooped up the sponge and threw it as far away from them as she cold.

The seahorse that had originally thrown it, a bright red creation lined with azure markings, immediately streaked off. The sponge could be seen bobbing on the other end of the hole. Kavala gasped and then laughed as the animal scooped up the sponge, swamp hastily towards them, and then threw it towards the pair again. It patiently waited, almost dog-like, for one of them to throw it again.

“Is it playing fetch?”
Kavala said, her voice growing tight with wonder.

She grabbed at the sponge again, put more effort into it, and then heaved the thing well towards the other side of the pool. It streaked off to fetch it again, causing Kavala to laugh as she turned back to catch Matthew’s expression. She hoped he’d talk about his day too. She wanted to know how tired he was and if now was a good time for them to talk. She had something on her mind she wanted to talk to him about, knowing he’d understand just as well as anyone else would.

[The Deepwater Hole] Glowing Horses of the Sea

Postby Matthew on July 7th, 2014, 7:35 pm

He had always been fascinated with the Konti ability to both breath and swim in water as naturally as they breathed and walked on land. It was an incredibly handy skill to have and a tad bit of envy on his part was part of the reason he drove himself to learn as much as he could about swimming. He knew he was afraid of the ocean for no real logical reason and as a man of logic, this infuriated him to some extent. It was a minor frustration but a frustration nonetheless, something that was a bit rare for the normally calm student. He took time to explore his own ability with the waters, holding his breath and letting himself sink. When he was fully submerged, he briefly attempted to open his eyes but was instantly hit with a stinging sensation. It was probably the salt in the water. He could keep his eyes open if he forced the issue, but his vision was incredibly blurry. Could it do damage to his sight? He was about to surface and ask Kavala (after she had responded to his own question) but was distracted by the moving bodies around him. For a brief moment a little sliver of fear shivered somewhere deep inside of him. Then his mind took hold, calmly reminding him that he was surrounded by dozens of seahorses.

Matthew surfaced, gulping in air, turning to the Konti as she pressed against him. He couldn't remember if she had sensed his uneasiness in the water or if he had confessed it to her. He was quietly grateful though, wrapping arms loosely around the curve of her hips and keeping himself pressed firmly into her back. She seemed to appreciate the closeness, perhaps cause of the intimacy he assumed such a position implied or perhaps because of the simple erotic nature of two bare bodies pressing tightly together in water. Perhaps it was a combination of both.

Drae. She was one of Kavala's favorite teachers, from what Matthew had gathered. He could understand why. He was enrolled in one or two of the same classes and she taught in an interactive and easy-to-follow format. There were often many homework assignments that Matthew found interesting to do, a challenge but nothing too difficult, and generally something that was quite educational. A few of the seahorses had seemingly grown comfortable with them, zipping around and playing together like Matthew and Kavala were no longer there. He furrowed his brow (an expression Kavala was now probably intimately familiar with) and absorb the information she was sharing with him. He had actually studied how to be a good listener, but was so genuinely interested in about everything she had to share that it wasn't incredibly hard for him. "I did not know this." Twenty families? He hadn't even known that poisons had any families to begin with. As she further explained though, it all slowly started to make sense. They were like classifications, categorizing all the different poisons into neat little groups.

Aquatic and Serpente. Two of twenty. He had noticed that she had used the phrase 'like twenty different families' which made him wonder if that was actually an approximate guess. He would have to research later. He was the sort to have a somewhat strict schedule for himself and that schedule definitely included study time.

Sea slugs. Before he knew it Matthew had his very first poison recipe tucked away in his mind. Luminous Vos. She tangled her legs around his own, stroking them together, nearly causing Matthew to accidentally flail out. He was quickly reminded that he could just put extra effort into using his legs and he would still be able to tread water just fine. He relaxed a little bit, just in time for her graceful fingers to press lightly to his defined shoulders.

He watched her dip down and then pop back up with her offer, acting exactly how the clever Konti had expected and giving a quick little nod. "I didn't bring any writing material but I would like to read over them after we are done here." She was very correct in assuming he would be interested. Matthew really was interested in everything.

"My day went well. I have a part time job at a local perfume shop and most of my day was spent there. She had an extra-large order of a particular perfume and she had asked that I help her out. She just paid a quick visit to my teachers for the day and that was that. They went ahead and assigned me homework and said they would give me a copy of the notes for the lecture. It was very kind of them." The sudden appearance of the sea sponge was completely surprising, Matthew displaying his shock in a few rapid-fire blinks aimed right at Kavala. She seemed just as surprised, blinking back, both heads turning simultaneously to figure out what was going on. The seahorse retrieved the little object and then returned, prompting Kavala to throw it again. Matthew watched carefully, expression displaying interest, though not a flicker of the joy that his Konti friend displayed. When the sponge was returned, Matthew took it and tossed it again, keeping up with the game. "It isn't hard work. It is mostly measurements. It involves a lot of herbalism and philtering though, and it also supplies me enough Mizas to pay for a little room and simple supplies to sustain myself off of."

[The Deepwater Hole] Glowing Horses of the Sea

Kavala liked Matthew’s body a great deal. She liked looking at it, touching it, and feeling its warmth. She’d grown intimately familiar with it and had stopped thinking of it as a landscape that was off limits or some sort of foreign territory. She touched him when she wanted too because he allowed it and encouraged it. And subsequently she knew its curves and plains and all its angles and imperfections. It was as much a part of her current environment as the water they were floating in. It was just her mindset, her simple way of accepting his presence in her life like she accepted the sun the moon and the stars.

But that didn’t mean she caved to his every need. Kavala sometimes deliberately pitched her words and her sentences to confuse him. It was a game to her, keeping him fired up and stimulated in a way that most men would find alien. By not being specific on how many poison families… saying the phrase ‘there are like’ instead of ‘there are’ was a deliberate slight on her part. Kavala wanted him interested, wanted his brain circling, and did it more to tease him than anything. She’d admit, after a time, exactly how many poison families there were. But she wouldn’t do it before he’d gotten the notion about poisons in his mind, a curiosity about them, and then that always present burning desire to know. Once that fire was stoked in him, she’d have all the help with her class she’d need, and that pleased her.

Kavala was, after all, a Denusk. And the Denusks were always hard on each other in torturous little ways. It was part of what she wanted to talk to Matthew about. And in many ways it would be an empty talk, but it was important to her that she tells him what she held in her heart for him even though she understood what he did not hold in his as well.

The Konti all but laughed as she swore she saw him mouth the words Luminous Vos. She’d bet her best yvas that he could recite the recipe from memory ten days from now if she mentioned it and perhaps hinted she’d forgotten how to make it. He was like that, amazing in his brokenness.

Kavala held him tighter.

“I’ll have it back at camp where you do if it truly interests you. Even if I’m not there, you can feel free to read over any of my notebooks and take notes.”
She reassured him, knowing that the securement of her poisoncrafting partner was complete. Oh, she didn’t have to be sneaky about it because she was sure he’d agree outright. But Matthew had been slowly teaching Kavala other kinds of power besides being forthcoming and plain spoken and the Konti was enjoying utilizing some of these techniques herself.

Subterfuge and intelligence.

Kavala laughed. She was almost dreading leaving Mura and returning home to Endrykas. It would seem so plain, so mundane, after being here, she thought. Then she turned her full attention on Matthew and listened to how his day went. The part about the perfume surprised her but also made sense. Matthew smelled different frequently and his words explained why. It was like he had a different fragrance on daily. And while that was somewhat exciting, it was also puzzling. “You got out of classes for a job? That’s amazing!” Kavala said, impressed that a professor had let him go so easily. She’d had no such luck. The Konti wondered if it was because Matthew was so esoteric in his classes and hadn’t declared intentions or inquired about joining the Opal Order beyond saying he was improving his healing skills.

More food for thought, indeed, Kavala mused. She engaged in the game of fetch with the seahorses for a bit longer before responding to his statements.

“That’s great. I’m glad you have some spending money and I bet you pick up a bit of perfuming too. That’s a great skill to have. My family gave me a few hundred Mizas to get here and go to classes, but once here I found that you could trade skill for skill for a lot of the training. So I have been lucky enough not to have to work.” Kavala said, releasing Matthew and swimming backwards to give them more space between to play with the seahorses. That told her where he went to for long periods of time. She’d wondered, but hadn’t yet tried to follow him and certainly hadn’t asked him outright.

She switched her attention to the seahorses momentarily. “Too bad they aren’t big enough to ride. I would like to ride one before I return home.” She said, treading water and easily keeping an eye out on both Matthew and herself. Her gaze followed the seahorses around the Deepwater Hole for a few moments before she turned her eyes back on Matthew.

“Matthew… I wanted to talk to you about something. And I know you aren’t going to understand all of it. I… this is difficult to say… but I’m just going to come out and say it. I don’t mean to insult your intelligence by saying you aren’t going to understand. But maybe someday you can and then you’ll remember back here and you’ll ….” She frowned, running her hand up through her hair. She splayed her fingers out on the water, noting the membranes between the digits and almost growled with frustration. Then she looked up at him again, meeting his eyes.

“Matthew, something in you is broken. I don’t know how and I don’t know why, but I think anyone can see it. You don’t … feel things others should. It’s like you’ve taken your emotions and put them in a tiny box inside your head and vowed to never let them out. You can feel curiosity and excitement. I’ve even seen your body get aroused and you feel lust. But behind just really shallow things, I don’t think everything about your head is whole. But… this talk isn’t about that. I’m just telling you my observations because I want to explain why I don’t think you can understand what I want to tell you. And I want to tell you anyhow.”
Kavala said, slowly pushing him by moving closer over towards the side where he could perhaps gasp the shallow stone and recline in the luminous waters without drowning. She often worried about his swimming skills because to her humans seemed very fragile in the ocean on their own.

Then, when he was close enough to the edge were she’d be certain to have his undivided attention away from trying to stay afloat, she continued.

“I know there are no strings attached and no boarders in our relationship. It’s been an amazing time for me, one of discovery and a really safe place for me to be in my head and in your arms. And truthfully, I couldn’t ask for a better friend, broken or not. We’ve forged a powerful connection, Matthew. I know you might not be able to feel it like I do, but its so very much there. I know I have to go home to my people and marry some stranger and be his healer for all this wives and children in his pavilion and I’m okay with that. But I do know when that time comes its going to be hard to leave you, my friend. Before I loose my courage I want to tell you something and ask you something else. I want to tell you that I love you. I would like to say I love you like a friend, or like a lover, or like a brother, but it’s none of those things. I just love you like a kindred spirit. I don’t think you can love like that, Matthew. I really don’t. And that’s okay. But it’s important for me to tell you that no matter where you go in this world, no matter how far you travel and where you end up in life, that someone out there in the world loves you simply because she admires you as a person and simply because she can.” Kavala said, knowing it was probably the most inappropriate thing to say ever, regardless of placement and time. Women weren’t supposed to express emotions like that among her people. The men were allowed, of course, but that was the extent.

However, there was something more powerful women were allowed to do. And this was especially true if they were the senior person in their tent or pavilion. They could take in family, adopt, and expand the pavilion beyond the say of the Ankal. In that, women had power. And Kavala was the senior most Drykas in her pavilion currently, giving her that very same power. “I know you rarely talk about your family and I sense that family is much less important to you than it is to me. I understand that. But among my people, the women in charge of their pavilions can bring in more family members. In this case, since I am senior Drykas woman here, that means I have that power. And I want to use it if you will let me. I was wondering if you want to become an adopted Denusk. I would love for you and me to be family. Our blood is different so we can’t be brother and sister or related like that. But if you will let me take you into my pavilion, it will forever mean that you and I are family and it will give you access to places like Endrykas and safe passage across The Sea of Grass. You cannot be a Drykas; not really, because no Strider has called you theirs like Windsong has bonded to me. But it is a big step and it would give you a place to run to if you ever need shelter in your life.” She said suddenly, utterly serious and hopeful he would say yes.

“I don’t want you to answer now if you don’t want too. I want to just have you think about it, Matthew. As far as I know, you have no people. And in so far as I can, I would like to give you the gift of kin. Even if you say yes, you may never need us or step food on the Sea of Grass. But if you do, and if you agree, then you always have a home to come to if you ever needed one.” Kavala said, knowing this much was true. Even if she changed pavilions when she married, he’d still be accepted as family to both because he was offered that privilege. And it gave her a sense of comfort, and a sense of security knowing that even if something happened to her, maybe a legacy could be left in her stead.

Kavala watched his reaction carefully, knowing that going from telling him he was broken to inviting him to be family was a huge step.

[The Deepwater Hole] Glowing Horses of the Sea

She’d taken it too far. Kavala knew it for Matthew had not responded to her invitation to join her family and become an adopted Drykas. In fact, he’d said nothing at all and so a bit embarrassed that she’d assumed so much, Kavala had quickly taken her leave.

The Konti had her sea slugs squirming in the netting and indeed a group of sea weed she needed to make the two types of poisons she’d learned about in class. So carefully, she’d gathered up all her supplies and hiked back to town to get her horse and from there returned to her camp where her poisoncrafter’s kit was. It wasn’t ‘her’ kit exactly, but one borrowed from the classroom and available to the students for field work just exactly like she was conducting now. Along with the distiller in the backpack she still had, borrowed as well, she was going to be fine.

Matthew was nowhere to be seen. He wasn’t at camp when she returned and Kavala bit her lip knowing she’d probably ruined things between them.

Starting a fire on the beach, Kavala gathered up firewood and flotsam to feed the blaze, more than enough to keep it going all night. Then she took fresh water from the stream, filled a little pot, and suspended it on the tripod over the fire. Then she carefully read her notes on the poison, knowing she needed, and set up the distiller. Then, in an uncharacteristic manner, Kavala dropped the sea slugs into the fresh water once it started to boil and began to cook them down. She’d already emptied the pot of water to just enough to cover the slugs as she added them in. Then, carefully, she’d poked them with a set of tongs, making sure they were getting thoroughly cooked. Once they’d turned the color her instructions suggested was ‘right’ meaning they went from being beautiful translucent amethyst to an ugly opaque violet, she took the pot off the water, and began masticating the slug corpses and mixing them well in the water. Next, she took the little pot, set it up to the still, and began heating it again. This time she connected a beaker to the other end where the output was supposed to be pure toxin.

So she watched carefully as the little pot of ground up boiled sea slug was bubbling and then followed the trail of luminous liquid through the looping curls of the clear still. Normally impurities could be distilled out of water with this method, but when set up correctly, it could also distill pure poison out of what looked like a ground up mess. Luminous Vos was one of the easiest poisons to make, according to her notes, so Kavala took advantage of it, throwing herself into her studies and trying to perfect the poison so she kept her mind busy and not on Matthew’s lack of response.

She took vials out of the kit and laid them out, noting that the flask was starting to fill. She was surprised, however, at how little liquid actually got distilled out of the slug mastication. The Konti would have guessed more would have been forthcoming, but she was grateful for what was in the output. Adding wood to the fire, the Konti stirred the mixture on the front end trying to ignore the pure poison on the back end.

The truth was she wanted to test it.

But there was no one around to test it on. The only candidate possible was herself. And reading the affects of the Luminous Vos, self testing wasn’t too big of a risk. The poison stained the area with a luminescence that glowed violet and caused a slight irritation to the effected area for about five hours. The Konti glanced at herself, running her eyes over her arms and legs. Finally she decided to test it on the back of her hand.

So after waiting an hour for the distiller to run its course, Kavala finally pulled the flask free from the stand that attached it to the still, and dipped a twig into the flask. She drew the twig out and carefully traced a big K on the back of her hand. The pale flesh turned pink immediately and started to burn and itch. The konti shook her hand, then rubbed it on the sand next to her seat. But nothing was calming down the burn. She tried to ignore the itching and burning, as she carefully took down the still, disposed of the refuse of what remained in the pot, then cleaned the whole mess. When she got everything clean, she poured the contents of the flask out into a set of vials. She was disappointed it wouldn’t even create two vials. Then she cleaned the flask, returned the distiller and the poisoncrafting kit to her backback, and turned in for the night.

The seaweed and another type of poison would have to wait for the next day. Matthew’s answer, it turned out, would have to wait for a lot longer.
