Day 44 of Winter 514AV

The thieving shadow known as Incognito silently made his way through the deserted streets of Lhavit, footsteps almost too quiet to hear, body moving fast though carefully. This was one of the points where he could run into a patrol, he knew, and that was why the bat tried his hardest not to make any sound, something that should render him rather undetectable for the human ear. Well, almost anyway. His natural way of movement had been rubbing off on him, granting him with the grace and silentness of a sneak thief even if he walked normally, and even so, his motions were quiet.

Swiftly the Kelvic pressed his belly against the wall at the end of the alley, leaning in and taking a peek to scan for guards passing by. That he did not hear them did not necessarily mean that they weren't there, the guards were not always on the move, they could have been standing in wait motionlessly, not creating a sound. Fortunately though there were none there, and the other side was clear too, he could continue his way. A quick dash brought the thief to the other side of the street, leaving the intersection behind and swapping one set of shadows for the next, hiding in the dark as if he had never done anything else. Stealth was one thing Brandon was relatively good at, darkness was his cloak and friend, light his bane.

Illuminated streets were avoided for the most part, unless he had no choice. Even so, the faster he was out of the light, the less risk he faced of being seen, which was always great. Another problem was that the illuminated streets were the larger streets, the main streets of Lhavit as it were, and those were more commonly used for Shinya patrols. True, some routes did lead the guards through alleys and other dark places, but the alleys were small and maze-like, if one knew them well enough, one could slip past the guards without being noticed, taking another route on the spot to avoid them. Alleys were a thief's playground, their home turf. They were dark and confusing, small and resembled a maze, calling it the home turf or playground of the thieves was quite accurate.

Once there, the bat started to run, taking care to mind his footwork so he would not create the loud and typical sound running footsteps made. It was not a dash, but rather some form of jogging to increase speed, but one he could endure for a long while, not getting too tired and sweaty. A steady gait perhaps. Brandon made his way through the alleys swiftly, turning corners and vaulting over low obstacles, quickly scaling walls of dead ends to decrease the distance and time he had to travel. It was a bit of a long way to go, the Animation Studio's and the Starry Chalice's locations were not exactly close to each other. Brandon did not even take the time to shrug, he couldn't care less about the distance, making his escape would be the hard part.

His legs continued to run, eating away the distance bit by bit, step by step as the bat coursed through the network of alleys and streets, in a speedy though cautious manner. The patrol routes of the Shinya had been burned into his memory, the result of several days of observing them, as well as his built-up experience from thieving in the Crystal City for over a year. Should the guards have used a strict schedule for their rounds during the rest periods, like they did during the work bells, Brandon would have been able to predict where and when he would run into them and even plan out his route so he would not have to slow down and cross paths while they were in the vicinity. However, this was not possible, unfortunately.

Yet, that did not mean that it was impossible to avoid the Shinya. Since their route was known to him, Brandon knew where he had to pay attention and where he had to be sneaky. Of course, he kept his guard up all the time, always scanning for signs that he had been discovered, for people following him or approaching. It was a second nature to him, he did not even have to think about it, his body did so automatically, quite alike to his movements and general thievish steps. His ears picked up nothing yet as he ran though the alleys, staying as much in the shadows as possible, and quickly crossing illuminated areas.

It was obvious that running all the way to the Animation Studio wouldn't work out, and Brandon knew this all to well, finding this fact confirmed as he neared another of the Shinya routes. Due to his keep ears though, he had heard them before he had arrived at the end of the alley, but figured they were still far off. A glance was taken in the direction he guessed he'd find them, making sure his body did not stick out from behind the corner. There was no mistaken the two people walking towards him for anything else than Shinya guards, with their typical clothing and the weapons they had dangling at their hips. Quickly he retreated back into the alley, trying to remember whether these guards would enter this alley or if they would keep walking straight ahead.

Knowing himself, he probably had planned to avoid taking the same routes as the guards to minimize the chances of running into them. Crossing paths was a different matter entirely. This led to the conclusion that the guards would probably just walk past this alley and continue their patrol, maybe only taking a peek inside. For that reason, Brandon had retreated, covered by the dark they wouldn't see him even if they looked straight at him. More and more steps back were taken, until the patrol stopped at the entrance to the alley and stared into the darkness. Brandon froze immediately, feeling his heart accelerating and adrenaline slipping into his blood. Just for good measure, he wanted to take another step back, but his mind dismissed that idea. Movements would only lead to his discovery, he knew.

Still, the piercing stare of the guards was quite unnerving, more than enough to force the bat's body to produce the cold sweat he guessed came with fear. Yet, he refused to move, he just stood there and returned the stare, glaring daggers and yelling in his mind that they had to go away. Not that the guards could actually see the thief staring back at them, the darkness was quite the efficient cover, and nothing moved. However, maybe the Shinya felt something was amiss, one of them slowly stalking closer and closer, leaving Bran no choice but to back away. The same rhythm of the guard's movements was used, starting to move when she did, silently and cautiously. Slowly but steadily, the bat was driven towards a brighter part of the streets, a larger one too and his sweat started pearling down his face.

Soon he would leave the cover of the darkness, soon he would enter the light and he'd be seen. Franticly his eyes searched for a way out, for a way to escape this dangerous situation. Cursing inwardly at the prospect of having been caught before he had managed to complete this task, the thief raged mentally, struggling to find a way out. And he found one. Almost as if his eyes had been guided by Yshul herself, Brandon spotted an alcove with a door, not quite large but more than enough to hide himself in for the time being. Instead of backing away, Brandon started moving towards the alcove, reaching it quickly and pressing his back against the door quietly, while the Shinya guardswoman still closed in. Fortunately, she had not noticed Brandon, and when she was about six steps away from him she stopped and returned to her partner and continued their patrol.

As per usual, Brandon took a few moments to calm down and wait for the patrol to be on its way before stepping out of the alcove and to return to the end of the alley, the thought That was too close for comfort buzzing around in his skull. After that incident, everything went according to plan though, as it had all been but a test to gauge his determination to see this through. All Brandon could do was dismiss the thought and stay alert, fully aware that the worst was yet to come.

The worst part was for later though, the part where he'd have to run and avoid guards who'd come swarming like ants following a trail of sugar. Fortunately, that was not just yet, and Brandon could prepare himself for it; heck, he'd been preparing for it since... eight days ago or something. True, his plan wasn't perfect, but it was as good as it could get. There were too many uncertainties involved for him to be able to conjure up a foolproof plan, and he doubted those actually existed. The power of coincidences and unexpected happenings was not to be underestimated.

What could be done though, was to set up a plan with as low a risk as possible, with the highest chances of success. There was a plan B though; abort mission and make a run for it. He could always try again later. Hopefully, if he didn't get caught, that is. Not that Brandon was particularly worried, he was quite sure he'd have to run anyway but more importantly, he was confident in his skill, it was something he could trust in. Sure, he was nervous, and sure he felt the dread of knowing the Shinya would swarm towards the Studio and try to catch him all at the same time, flooding the immediate surroundings with their numbers. However, that was part of the fun, that was what made this so exciting, that was exactly the reason he was so thrilled by it.

Maeki Cho's Animation Studio stood there timidly, trying to hide between the two other houses next to it, but it was no use. There were no fancy signs with big attention-drawing letters screaming the name of the house to anyone who passed by, no. Instead there were two words scribbled on the door. Animation Studio. It wasn't fancy and it wasn't big. Visitors of Lhavit or even people who had never heard of the Studio would probably overlook it and fail to find it, but it was there alright. Brandon grinned, finding some amusement in the exterior of the Studio. To him, it was as if the small magic facility was trying to hide from him, to escape his gaze. It was as if the Studio knew what lied in wait for it, as if it was aware that one of its rooms, the one hailed as the actual Studio would be reduced to nothing but a smoking pile of rubble.

There was no use in idling around though, Brandon emerged from the alley he'd been standing in and approached the house warily, checking his environment for enemies and danger, but finding nothing. Quickly he tiptoed to the first window he could reach, taking a peak inside. It was the one on the left, that should be one of the bedrooms, if he remembered correctly. Where Maeki actually slept was a mystery though, she had three bedrooms, and all could be found on the left side. It shouldn't matter much, it wasn't like he had planned to be loud when opening up the escape routes. Quietness was a must for a thief. Noisy thieves were caught rather quickly after all.

Carefully, the bat fished the glass cutter out of his belt pouch -the one where he kept his larceny tools, not the one with the philters- and gently placed the bottom of the cone on the glass of the window. One hand held the cone firmly against the glass, while the other slowly turned the handle, and the glass cutter did its job. He knew that the gemstone -diamond was it?- inside would go round and round over the glass, cutting through it with little effort, opening up a hole through which he could extend an arm. Once he was done, the cone still on the glass and the glass still in the window, Brandon gently pulled it back, dragging a perfect circle of glass with it. The adhesive on the cone's bottom preformed its job excellently, allowing the bat to remove the glass circle when he was done, placing it gently on the floor.

An arm intruded through the freshly-cut hole, silently pushing aside the curtain to take a peek inside. Maeki did not seem to be sleeping in that room, there was no one present there at all, and Brandon found that quite convenient; he wouldn't have been able to use this route as efficiently if she had been there. His hand found the knob of the window and unlocked it as quiet as he could, leaving it wide open after he had pulled back his limb and then moved to the next one.

E for Escape

The next window was the one that would grant him a glimpse of the insides of the Animation Room, if he was not mistaken, the window he did not have to open, but chose to anyway. One couldn't be too picky in their escape routes, every option added to the list was an extra bit of versatility in his plan. If the other two ways were blocked, he could always still use this one. The more escape routes, the better. One could never know for certain if everything would go according to plan, after all. Coincidence and bad luck were factors one had to include when setting up a plan, even though one could never be sure they would actually show up. Not that it mattered, taking as many possibilities into account did not harm, on the contrary, it could save one's life.

As such, Brandon did not hesitate to place the wooden cone of his glass cutter on the surface of the glass of the window, the adhesive immediately sucking it close and keeping it more or less in place. Turning the handle was no hard task, the diamond traveled around and around, cleanly cutting the glass and making nary a sound. It made the bat wonder who had actually come up with this ingenious tool in the first place. He suspected it was some legendary thief with a strong connection to Yshul.

One She was interested in, one who had managed to steal her heart maybe? One thing was certain, the thief had no doubt been the most skilled mortal larcenist of all times, cunning and clever, always looking for ways to get into houses faster and pass through obstacles with more and more ease. The thief had probably create many more innovating techniques to overcome those that would hinder or even halt those quick of finger and light of step, maybe even the lock picking was invented by him? Did that mean that said legendary thief actually was the First Larcenist? The first real larcenist? Not a common pickpocket or bandit, but a true Larcenist? Wow.

Well, no surprise that Yshul had been interested in the guy! If that really was what happened... Still, how did he come up with this? A gemstone that could cut glass, powered by a handle and hidden by a cone. Said cone was used -by adding an adhesive- to remove the glass circle and to actually block the sound and noise created from cutting. The man was a genius, that could not be denied. If his skill was as good as his brains, it was obvious that he was indeed the best thief to have lived, up until now. That's right, up until now. Or anytime soon anyway, since Brandon would do his utmost best to snatch that title for himself. He'd need a lot more training still though, but one day, one day Brandon would be the one praised with the title of best thief in Mizahar. For now, he had to be content with being the best thief in Lhavit. Well, it was something at least. A grin could not be suppressed upon thinking that understatement.

By now the glass cutter had done its job terrificly and the circle of glass was take away from its former location and placed on the floor carefully. The thief's hand and arm easily passed through the hole, angled strangely to reach the knob of the window and unlocked it with a cautious and slow pull. Then, Brandon brought his hand back to his side, pushing open the window as far as he dared, not quite knowing what for terrible abominations hid within. A sneaky glance revealed nothing of the sort though, it seemed that Maeki did not keep her creations here. Well, that was great, Brandon pushed open the window as much as possible. Good, two of the three escape routes were taken care of, now for the next one.

The next one was at the back of the house, a location he could reach via two ways; or he took the long way by running around or he could climb the building and drop down. The latter was more attractive and probably quicker too, so it was pretty obvious Brandon chose that option. A foot placed itself on the windowsill, soon joined by the other, lifting the bat's body up. Balance wasn't quite right just yet, and hands shot out to grip the corner created by the stones where the window was fitted in. Steading himself immediately, Brandon decided to go horizontal for a short while, clambering the stones in between the door and the window, using the uneven stones and their roughness to his advantage. Small cracks wide enough for him to insert his fingers aided him too, all creating some sort of ladder that carried him upwards? Higher and higher until he finally hoisted his body on top of the roof, forearms first, then chest and finally his legs.

The Animation Studio was not that tall actually, it only had one floor and no dome. While domes were the attribute people associated with Lhavitian houses, not all of the residences had them. The small, one-floor apartments commonly had a flat, slightly tilted roof or sometimes a regular flat roof, with some low walls to mark the edges. The domes put on the larger buildings were usually skyglass, but sometimes they were just made out of rock or stones, like the rest of the buildings. In fact, skyglass was a material used by the richer folks to decorate their houses. Alses had an awful lot of the crystal embedded in her walls, and the towers did too. Well, not that that actually mattered.

Lowering himself in a crouch, Brandon languidly crept to the other side in silent motions, fearing that just walking might wake up his target and jeopardize or even forfeit this whole operation. Besides, standing upright on a roof made you easy to spot, which wasn't that bad as long as one was not about to trespass and steal -attempting burglary. Which was one of the reasons why Brandon -despite how much he loved doing it- chose to remain on the streets rather than to plan his route by roof. There was no use in just asking to be arrested, now was there?

Sure, the crossing of the roof was rather slow and tedious, but at the same time it was safe and with low risk of detection. Not that his footsteps were actually loud and there was close to no chance that his victim would wake from the noise they made, one had to be cautious at all times in this business, not everything was as low risk as they seemed. Take Alses' mansion for example; a couple of seasons ago it had been close to unguarded, practically inviting the bat with open arms. However, that did not take away the fact that one of the guards had unexpectedly gone inside the yards to take a leak, that the skyglass had given him trouble by taking away many of the shadows Brandon used to sneak around and that the lock on the front door had been too hard for him to pick.

Fortunately the Councilor had left a window open. Once inside however, more problems had presented themselves, the most troublesome one being the echoing hallways. Not only did the silence amplify his steps, the hallways distributed them through the house too, it was a good thing Alses had drugged herself that night. She probably did that every night, unless she had been too scared to do it after his last message. He grinned at that. The Bonfire Ball had been the perfect cover to work with, attracting everyone's attention to the front yard, while Brandon had been sneaking around in the house. There had been a couple of complications of course, but he had managed to get away, and the Shinya had not caught him, so there was no problem. Not that it had been that much of a close call... or had it? He couldn't really remember. Not all details of his jobs tended to stick around in his memory after all.

Finally he reached the edge of the roof, Brandon cast a quick glance downwards to check if there was anyone -Shinya or citizen- around and was content with the absence of people. Hands on the edge, the bat turned himself so his front faced the wall, and let his feet search for footholds, finding them after a bit of prodding around. From there the process repeated itself may times, the only difference being the thief's vertical position as he climbed down as fast as he could manage, eventually touching down on the floor and rolling his shoulders a couple of times.

Right, the last window. This one was a little different from the two others, in the way that it was located higher and was not as large. Still no problem though; Brandon's slender frame would fit through easily and to open it, well, he only had to hold his glass cutter at shoulder height. That was what he did then, pressing the tool against the window and turning the handle rapidly for less than a chime, feeling the diamond cutting through the glass, noting the difference in sensation as its work was done and there was nothing left to cut. The glass disk was placed on the street, just like all the others and once again Brandon slipped an arm through the hole to open up the window. As per usual, this one was left wide open too, so he could escape through it in an instant, should the need arrive.

And that was that.

Great, the escape routes are opened and ready in case of trouble, it's time to enter the building!

Please keep in mind that Brandon is a novice in climbing, which makes easily scaling walls in a jog a bit more difficult than a simple up and over. Also, your stealth is only competent. Even in the shadows, concealing one's movements while being directly looked at is something that is very very difficult. Please keep thins in mind.

I loved that Bran thought to proved himself with multiple routes of egress. These threads are fun to read, because you really manage to embody a real sense of "thiefness" haha.
