It was probably one of the last big hunts of the year. The winter was blessedly light this year, or at least as light as it could be in the mountain ranges of Kalea. Zalla was nervous. She was still new to being a gamescout, having received the job during the summer. This would be her first winter hunt, and her first time venturing out of the city during the winter season. Barely old enough not to be considered a Yasi anymore, Zalla was a talented young girl, but she was more than a little glad that there would be another scout along on the hunt. Khara. Zalla did not know Khara well, though she'd seen her around, but she'd heard of her. Khara would find something for them to hunt, surely.

The others in the party were hunters Zalla did not know. All avora, two men and a woman. The woman's name was Anna, and she seemed nice enough, for an Avora. Unlike the men, she carried a shortbow. The two men, named Daryl and Koden, both carried longbows. Zalla was armed with a dagger, but could not afford anything else. She was surprised to see that Khara carried a bow of her own. Normally the game scouts did not carry bows, it was not their job to do the killing, that honor was for the avora and the endal. Zalla wanted to buy a bow eventually, just for her own protection, and so that maybe one day she could work her way up to becoming an Avora, but she didn't know if that would ever actually happen.

They did not have any wind eagles to carry them out, and Zalla figured that was probably a good thing. The wind eagles both terrified and awed her, and to ride on the back of one was beyond imagination. Like all Inarta, Zalla wished she could be an Endal, but she held no illusions to the likelihood of something that amazing ever happening to her. Avora was a realistic goal, if possibly still a bit beyond her, but Endal? That was just ridiculous.

The group met at the city gates, and the Avora began talking with one another like they were old friends. They probably were. Zalla nervously approached her fellow game scout, making sure to avoid the gaze of any of the Avora. She'd have to talk to them eventually, but for now she just wanted to be left alone. They were taking an old trail to the east. It followed the foot of the mountain for a long time before veering off into the valley towards the bay. From what Zalla understood it had been some time since anyone had taken the trail, and they were hoping it would lead them to so new game.

"So.. have you been this way before?"

If Khara answered she'd have to do it on the move. The three Avora seemed to come to a decision, and shouted for the scouts to come along. They all set off down the path toward the trail they were looking for. The Avora seemed very animated, as if they were expecting something good. For Zalla she just hoped they would make it back before dark, but if the Avora actually expected to find something, that could only be good news. The city always needed more food during the winter, and if they could bring something home, it would be good for everyone.

The Last Hunt of Winter

Postby Khara on February 16th, 2015, 1:15 am

Market Days were always strange to work. Not that the concept of working on them was hard to grasp, the days were divided up fairly evenly among the game scouts of Wind Reach to make sure they could attend a few a season, but more for the unpredictability that they offered. Usually the work seemed to be a bit lighter, a small attempt at placating those who couldn't go to the festival-like gathering of other Inarta, but that wasn't always guaranteed - especially during Fall and Winter. This particular Winter had already been odd according to those that had worked on the Tenth - hunters that normally might have taken the day off went out in droves, the memory of the Winter past steeling everyone towards making the most of the milder temperatures before things became as brutal as they typically were already.

As for Khara, the simple fact she had been selected to go with the group of Avora had been all together confusing. In times like these only the most senior of scouts were chosen, their skills valued and needed. Khara was slowly working her way into their ranks but practically all of her assignments had been solitary since Fall. She wasn't sure if Orthin knew about what had happened to her in the prior season or not, but he certainly seemed to avoid having her work with any of the hunters that came in without specific individuals in mind. Although far from their leader, the senior scout took charge amongst his fellow Chiet quite often, something most of them were grateful for. It kept chaos and competition in the mornings to a minimum. Orthin told you where to go if no one of a higher caste did, it was as simple as that. Khara had never been sure if her more recent assignments were for her protection or if the eldest game scout didn't think she was capable of working alongside the higher castes without messing things up anymore, but whatever the cause - real or imaginary - the reasons had apparently worn out as of that morning.

The trio of Avora had come in and Orthin had waved her and Zalla to go, which meant Khara was the more experienced of the scouts, something she had never experienced before when placed on such a task. That thought was moderately terrifying in and of itself, never mind the fact that she was barely containing her wariness of the two male hunters in the group. Still, at least they seemed enthusiastic about their prospects for the day.

Khara shifted how the straps of her backpack rested against her shoulders as she quickly took off after the hunters. Zalla had lingered about with her beforehand and had finally managed to pluck up enough courage to actually say something just as they had started moving. Aside from being a newer face among the scouts, Khara knew practically nothing about her fellow Chiet. That didn't mean she was going to be rude to the younger girl, though.

"Once or twice," she admitted as they hurried along. She squinted as if trying to recall exactly when it had been and what the trail was like. "Not for a long time, though. I didn't even think any animals used it anymore."

She realized a tick too late how discouraging that probably sounded and cast a quick smile towards Zalla. "That's not necessarily a bad thing, though. Means we won't have too many mixed signs, hopefully. If there's anything newer, it should be easy to spot."

The Last Hunt of Winter

The air was cold, not unexpected for winter, but thankfully cold was all they had to worry about at that moment. It was otherwise a sunny and clear day. For a while the Avora led the way, seeming casual and not appearing to be on the look out for any game. They seemed more interested in chatting with one another, the men joking and flirting with the woman, and the woman pretending that she wasn't interested in either of them. There wasn't much of interest to be found that close to the city anyway, the game scouts would note, if they were paying attention to their surroundings. After about a bell the Avora grew quiet and one of the men motioned the game scouts ahead.

"Find us something good, you two," the man, Koden, said as they passed. "We don't plan to fail today. Got it?"

It was as if the Avora expected the game scouts to actually be able to influence what game was actually out there. Didn't they know it was mostly just about luck. If they found any tracks at all, it would be luck that game happened to pass through that area. It would be luck if the tracks were less than a day old. It would be luck if the tracks didn't vanish into a stream. Luck that the falling snow didn't cover them up. It wasn't as if the scouts had any power to influence nature itself, they could only search for the signs that nature left them. But, from the tone in Koden's voice, it was clear that failure was not an option.

Luckily, there was not any snow falling at that moment, though there had been earlier that day. That too might be lucky for the two chiet, because it meant that any tracks they found most likely would be less than a day old. The area they were in had few trees, they were still up in the foothills, though if they continued to follow the trail they would soon veer off into the valley and soon find themselves surrounded by trees.

"Which way do you think we should go," Zalla asked Khara when they were far enough ahead of the Avora that she was sure they couldn't hear.

The foothills and higher up were less promising, though Skygoat could potentially be found there. Skygoat were difficult to hunt, however, as they were agile and fast and seemed able to climb even the steepest parts of the mountain. The forest was usually full of game, if you could find it, but this was winter, and finding anything in the valley during the winter was no small feat. Who knew what predators might be lurking about as well, searching for the very same game they were.

OOCYou get to choose if we hunt the foothills and up, or if we venture down into the valley. You are welcome to find random tracks in your post, or even a rabbit or something to chase after, but don't actually come across any big animals just yet. Tracks are fine, but don't actually locate the animal itself.

The Last Hunt of Winter

The way the one Avora had spoken sounded uncomfortably like an ultimatum. An unspoken or else imagined and stamped into her thoughts. As much as it caused Khara's breath to shorten and her heart to uncomfortably pound, the focus of the task allowed her to retain composure. Mostly. She still had to force several deep breaths to be taken as she hurried in front of the hunters with the other scout.

Once in the lead, Khara let her eyes wander across the path in front of them, taking in the fresh dusting of snow that left a mostly pristine layer atop the ground. She wasn't certain if that would be a help or a hindrance and was trying to figure out all the various ways it could prove useful when Zalla interrupted her train of thought. It was assuring in a way, to see the other scout almost as nervous as Khara always felt.

Khara hummed a quiet contemplative note as she looked upwards towards where the cliffs would soon greet them if they continued before a quick glance was given towards the valley. It was hard to say which was the better way to go. While they were still relatively in the safety provided so close to Wind Reach, her memories couldn't help but snap to what had happened the last time she had ventured into the lower altitudes. True, that had been an - at kindest to say - unusual event, and the three hunters would be far better prepared to handle any unexpected dangers, but she couldn't quite shake the unease of it.

The Chiet's quickly looked back towards where the foothills would gain more altitude. There usually wasn't much other than goats that way, but they did tend to stick around a bit longer before moving on to where the snows wouldn't be as deep. Skygoats meant climbing though, and even if they found them Azira had told her that they were often more trouble than they were worth. It wasn't her place to judge their skill, just find something for them to hunt, but Khara couldn't help but wonder at just how cross they would become if the nimble creatures proved tricky.

It only took one glance down towards the deceptively peaceful valley to make up her mind, though. If there were any predators lingering about, at least the more open terrain of the higher altitudes would allow them to see them coming.

"We'll head higher," she answered, the pause between question and answer only taking a few ticks when the decision had felt as though it would take ages. "Even with the milder temperatures everything will still have migrated on, or be in the process of it. We aren't near any routes that I know of but I've been told the Skygoats and Hillgoats can be a bit more stubborn about moving on."

She tried to keep her tone hushed as they walked, veering towards upwards away from the forested valley below. Not only to try and avoid a rebuke from the Avora but out of a growing habit she had been forming of keeping quiet unless absolutely necessary when on a job.

Several chimes past as the small group began the slow ascent, Khara continually searched for signs of anything, something her fellow game scout was no doubt doing as well. It was an indent in the ground that caught her eye. She knew there were plenty of rabbits around Wind Reach but as they approached the burrow seemed larger than any she'd seen a rabbit create. Different as well, through Khara wasn't quite sure how to describe it. There were other types of rodents that created burros though, marmots and the like. Not exactly the type of game the hunters had alluded to, though.

She was about to turn back to the other scout to get a second opinion on if it was worth seeing if there were any other burrows in the entrance when she spotted it - a disturbed area of snow that seemed to lead up towards more rocky terrain. It was exactly what she had been hoping for, and that left her overly wary. It could just have been created by the burrowing animals, after all. Khara approached slowly, choosing her footing among the snowy ground carefully and lightly as possible, stepping around small plants in the area - struggling small shrubs and grasses for the most part.

The Chiet couldn't help but force herself to contain a frown that wanted to appear as she got closer. The snow clearly had been trampled on and pushed aside by some sort of animal as it had been feeding on the bits of plant life but there weren't any clearly distinguishable tracks in the snow and the rock underneath was unyielding. Her focus turned to the plants instead, stripped of whatever small leaves they had alongside nibbled grasses. It certainly could have been done by a goat, but it also could have been made by smaller game as well. Khara looked to her fellow scout for input, maybe Zalla would know something that she didn't? It was worth a try, at least.

The three Avora, a fair distance behind, kept quiet as the two chiet worked, their keen eyes scanning the surroundings, their bows at the ready should an animal appear. Zalla was light on her feet, seeming at ease in the terrain despite her obvious nervousness about the three behind them. She seemed happy to go up in to the foothills rather than down into the valley. The young girl shadowed the more experienced game scout, keeping an eye on the ground of course, but clearly watching and mimicking everything Khara did.

Zalla made no comments as they traveled, taking a cue from Khara's silence. When they approached the burrows nothing appeared, of course, though a series of sharp clicking noises sounded somewhere in the vicinity. Zalla glanced around, but neither she nor Khara would spot the source of the sound, and it did not repeat itself. Whatever it was, it wasn't going to show itself. It might be in the burrow, but the sound seemed to have come from somewhere else. Zalla began searching the area, perhaps looking for tracks or other signs of whatever made the clicking noise, she didn't say, and did not notice as Khara headed over to the patch of snow.

The hunters were not far behind, though they slowed, noticing that the pair of scouts seemed to be taking more of an interest in their surroundings. Glances were exchanged, arrows notched, and all went silent. The three spread out, their eyes darting about, trying to spot whatever the scouts might have been looking for. Zalla noticed Khara looking towards her at that point and made her way over to the scout, noting the vegetation. She met Khara's eyes for a moment before moving forward, perhaps looking for more signs, but did not speak. If there was an animal nearby, speaking would only scare it away. The girl crested the top of a small rise and froze, her body going rigid, and then she fell into a crouch, turning back to Khara with a wide eyed expression of excitement on her face and motioning the woman forward.

Khara would find when she joined the scout the reason for the girl's sudden excitement. Not one, but a pair of hill goats fed on some shrubs only twenty yards away, atop another small rise. They hadn't seemed to notice the two women, nor the hunters that were slowly approaching. Zalla turned her head to face Khara, waiting until she was paying attention, and mouthed the words, "What now," just as her face was suddenly darkened by a shadow overhead. Flinching, the girl shot a confused glance upward, her eyes widening again. The shadow passed over the two of them in an instant, heading straight for the pair of goats. High above, a wind eagle passed over the animals. It did not dive, did not change it's course at all, and seemed to have no interest in the goats, but the shadow was all it took. As soon as the darkness touched them the goats took off at a gallop, easily traversing the rocky terrain, but leaving a clear path in the snow.

"Oh no," Zalla exclaimed in a whisper, her eyes darting between Khara, the goats, the departing wind eagle, and finally back toward the steadily approaching Avora who had noticed the two crouched game scouts at the top of the rise. "What do we do, Khara?"

The Last Hunt of Winter

It was agonizing to watch helplessly as the goats made their escape. Even as Zalla whispered the exact phrase that shot through her own mind, Khara's own gaze was caught between watching the goats' hurried exit and the Wind Eagle overhead. It was one of those small frustrations she could never voice; if Zalla and herself were the hunters, they might have been able to loose an arrow in the time it had taken between them spotting the animals and the Eagle's appearance. The thought was buried deep, only translating into a disappointed sigh.

"We should follow," she whispered in reply, squinting against the sky at the ever vanishing sight of the Eagle. The goats were leaving evidence of their passing, at least. The Eagle, and it's possible rider, however, were far more difficult to gauge. Were they just passing through? Had they considered the goats below their skill for the day? Had they spotted the group already in pursuit of the animals? She very much doubted the last one; it would have been more likely that an Endal would have purposely come and taken the easier game away from the Avora and their Chiet scouts, perhaps mockingly thanked them for finding the goats for them - they had full right to, at least. Still, there was nothing to say that the Eagle wouldn't return if they continued on their present course and the ending would be the same. It was the fact there was two, though, that urged Khara to continue. That and the fact the Eagle hadn't immediately changed course. She hoped her instincts weren't wrong.

A glance was cast back towards the Avora as she considered how to proceed. Surely they too had seen the shadow pass overhead. Would they want to know about the startled prey? A lesson she'd been taught came to mind and she glanced towards the younger scout and let out another slow breath, trying to boost her confidence in what she was about to say.

"They'll follow our lead. We'll need to keep as quiet as possible since the goats are already going to be on edge now," Khara kept her voice low, a whisper that hopefully would only just barely reach Zalla to emphasize the point. "Just, try and look confident in what we're doing. Don't worry, we have fresh tracks in snow to follow, can't really ask for better."

A shrug of her shoulder and a quick smile that was hopefully as reassuring as she wanted it to be were offered before the elder girl stood up from where they had crouched slowly. She continually watched where the goats had run off for any sign of movement as she began the slow walk forward towards where they had been standing. There was practically zero chance that they would return to that exact spot in such a short time, but Khara wasn't willing to take any gambles.

She came to a stop where the two goats had been, noticing the way the snow had been disturbed when they had bolted and how far it was until the next set of prints were made. They weren't like deer or moose that actually ran, it was more like they hopped quickly away and she noted how the prints seemed to reflect that. The first set they had left was cautiously approached and scrutinized. Even with the quickness in their leaving, Khara couldn't help but see how the prints weren't exactly dug into the ground underneath as one might have expected from a leaping animal making a landing. They were clear as well, two long shapes that roughly made a V. She hadn't been expecting the prints to be that clear. Very light on their feet, she realized. That could be problematic if they came to an area without any snow, she doubted their hooves would leave any marks against the stone in the area. Even worse if they decided to go straight up a cliff face.

Khara swallowed hard against the lump that threatened to rise in her throat. No turning back now, she encouraged herself and moved as carefully and quietly as possible along the path left by the twin sets of prints.

The Last Hunt of Winter

The twang of a bowstring behind the two scouts sounded, and a quiet exclamation of victory sounded from one of the hunters. The eagle's passing had not completely hindered them, and had in fact scared whatever animal had made the clicking noise earlier before they spotted the goats, causing it to run for its burrow. The hunter went to retrieve the animal, a small marmot, and held it up to show the others, who grinned. Marmots were not the best of meat, but anything was better than nothing, especially when it distracted the hunters from the fact that two perfectly edible goats had just fled away from them without their even knowing it.

Khara and Zalla easily followed the tracks if the goats for a time, the hunters following behind, one of them having skill enough to recognize the tracks they were following and alerting the others. They all stayed silent, letting the scouts do their job and following behind. Not all hunters required game scouts, but those that did respected the need enough, well, some of them did anyway, to let the scouts do their job without question. They would get the glory in the end when they brought down whatever animal they were chasing.

As they followed the trail it became less of a straight line, and more a random course, sometimes venturing higher into the foothills, sometimes lower. At one point there were several hoof-prints clumped together, as if multiple goats were in the same area, or, as if two goats had paused to meander about, nibbling at the few shrubs growing up beneath the snow. Near that place Khara found a steaming pile of dung.

"That's a good sign, right? We're catching up?"

Zalla voiced her question in a whisper, sounding very hopeful. The hunters caught up a moment later, one of the men glancing over at the two scouts and scrunching up his nose at the sight of the droppings.

"This is why tracking is for chiets," he commented, "I just can't find shyke that interesting.

"Oh, leave them be, dek petcher, they're just doing their job," the woman interjected, before turning her gaze to Khara. "Are we close?"

Were they close? Yes. But how close, Khara wasn't prepared to try and make any guesses at. The scat was fresh, that was certainly a good sign. The tracks that bunched together also seemed a good indicator that the goats had felt at ease enough to stop, at least for a time. A quick glance confirmed it with the freshly bitten off tips of plants nearby. Definitely a good sign.

Khara nodded her head slightly before looking to the female Avora, her gaze quickly darting away from meeting that of the huntress. "Yes."

It wasn't much of an answer, and she knew it. A fleeting look was given to the other two hunters, overly aware of the consequences that could come from disappointing them. Her wandering eyes found Zalla's finally and Khara almost flinched. That was it, then. That was why they had to succeed. Not for her own benefit, but for the younger scout as well. Pain at the hands up the upper caste was an inevitability, but if anything happened to Zalla today it would be her fault. Khara had more than enough fears regarding her own well being, the added guilt over being the cause of another game scout's misery was too much to bare.

"Yes, we are close." Her voice was far more confident when she spoke again, piercing even through the hushed tones she used. "If they have stopped once already, it's a safe bet they will again, for longer each time if the vegetation holds up."

They. She hadn't meant to use the word, but it was too late to take it back now. Perhaps it was best if the Avora had the entire story and knew what to expect. "There's two, but that means they will be double able to be alert of us when we approach. Zalla and I will signal the moment they are in sight."

It was as much instruction to her fellow scout as it was assurance to the hunters. Now, Khara could only pray she wouldn't come to regret those words. Another look was given to the dung, the way it reacted to the cold air and the prints near it. A quick breath was let out as another round of mental encouragement let pass. They would find these goats.

Not another tick was wasted as Khara quickly began to lead once more, still keeping a careful pace but her footsteps quickened. Each new print was followed as she sought out the next to make sure they didn't deviate from their course. It was a scraping sound ahead after a few chimes that brought her to an abrupt halt. A small hand signal was given to Zalla and Khara immediately felt foolish for it. There wasn't exactly a universal system between them all, as much as there maybe could stand to be. Just for an instant she allowed her mind to wander over the possibility of having Zhol help her come up with such a thing she could teach to anyone else who thought it would be a good idea - he was somewhat the residential expert in hand signs, even if it wasn't the same thing.

Another bit of the same sound snapped her attention back to reality and with focused slowness, Khara quietly crept forward to see what was making the noise. Determination set in, if it was the goats again there was no way she was going to hesitate in letting the hunters know this time.

The sound was coming from just up ahead, only a few boulders and scraggly bushes obstructing her view from what lied beyond. The hard sound of a hoof stepping on stone sounded, and Zalla grinned at Khara, hoping that maybe they had finally caught up to the goats. Khara crept forward and was able to confirm that it was indeed the goats they had been tracking, both of them, and they were munching on several bushes growing in the area. There wasn't much vegetation, but it was enough to occupy them for a while and if the hunters were quiet, they shouldn't have a problem sneaking up. That is exactly what they did when Khara signaled them.

The hunters, grins on their faces, crept up with bows strong and motioned the scouts back. Zalla moved away obediently, and the three hunters moved in, surrounding the goats. One of the men led the attack, or some the scouts would have to assume, as the other two were out of sigh. He drew back and let loose, quickly pulling another arrow, but it wasn't necessary. A keen ear could pick up the sound of the other two bows quietly thrumming as the other two hunters loosed their own arrows, and just like that it was done.

"Yes," the avora exclaimed and replaced his arrow in it's quiver, moving forward to check on his kill.

One of the goats was still alive, though the other was dead with two arrows, one in the head and one in the throat. The living one had been shot in the throat as well, but apparently not well enough to kill it, and the hunter quickly finished the beast off.

"We did it," the other man exclaimed.

"Great work," the woman said, and it was clear she was talking to the other two Avora. None of them paid any attention to the game scouts, now that their prize was won. "I bet this will be the best haul of the day."

"Maybe one of us will get chosen by a Wind Eagle for this! I bet none of the endals bring back this much meat today."

The Avora continued to congratulate each other as they set to work prepping the kills, and Zalla leaned against one of the boulders, watching quietly. Unless the Avora wanted to continue hunting and required the pair of them to do more scouting, it was very likely the chiet would end up having to carry back the carcasses themselves. After a few chimes Zalla glanced over at Khara and asked a question.

"Do you think one of them will get chosen? That would be exciting, wouldn't it?"

The Last Hunt of Winter

Postby Khara on March 25th, 2015, 4:31 am

.
There had been a very ill advised moment when Khara had felt herself reach back as if to retrieve her own bow but had caught herself and forced her hand back to her side. This was a moment for the hunters, for those who were skilled in such things, not for Chiet like her and Zalla. The hunt was a success, the two scouts had done their part. There should have been a sense of accomplishment, of a job well done, but all Khara was left with was a feeling of emptiness as she watched the Avora celebrate.

No matter what encouragements and help Azira had offered, no matter how many times Zhol told her that he believed she could achieve greater, moments like this were terribly sobering. Scouts didn't get promoted to Avora just for doing what they were supposed to do, but bringing in a big kill? Proving you were a great hunter? That could very well catch the eye of one of the Wind Eagles.

Still, Khara tried to pay attention to what the hunters were doing as they prepped the kills, attempted to study exactly how it was they readied the carcasses for transport. The trick was to try and not look like you were watching too hard, not trying desperately to learn techniques that would otherwise be a loss to the Chiet.

Zalla's question caught her entirely off guard and for one bitter moment Khara was tempted to reply that all five of them had just as much chance. As she looked over at her fellow scout, the words died before ever reaching anything more than a flickering thought. Of course the two Chiet didn't have that same sort of chance, it had been entirely foolish to think otherwise.

"It would," She agreed with a forced smile. "And... and just think, if it happens, we helped on the hunt that made it happen."

It was the best they could hope for, but there wasn't any shame to be had in that, was there? Khara looked back to the hunters and took a deep breath before offering what was hopefully a reassuring smile to Zalla.

"Come on, we should see if they would like any help." Her words had to be chosen carefully. They didn't need the scouts, but there wasn't usually any harm in offering to do things for the Avora. Usually. At least Khara hoped there wasn't.

All it took was two steps to begin questioning herself. Was it too forward to offer help that way? Would they think the Chiet were interfering? Would she end up with three angry Avora glaring at her? It was too late to turn back now though, too late to retreat now that she'd already voiced the suggestion to her fellow game scout.

"I-is there anything else you would like us to do?" Khara asked, unsure if the unexpected quietness of her voice was a good thing or not. At least her nerves had kept her eyes firmly planted on a spot on the ground, choosing to focus on a rock rather than try and even remotely meet the gaze of the hunters.
